It's exceptionally weird that some of the most important developments in footballing tactics came out of philosophical and intellectual thought, considering how vilified sporting intellectualism can be.

The entire idea of the false nine is rooted in the coffee house culture of Austria and Hungary in the 1920s and 30s, from discussions and thought building upon the ideas of a couple of british expats who coached there, though I don't know if the idea itself ever stemmed from those scenarios specifically. It was a bunch of café intellectuals who laid the basis for a role that didn't reach its wider acceptance until around 2010.

Ralf Rangnick was completely mocked by the German footballing establishment for thinking about football tactics in the way he did in the 90s, yet he's the starting point for Germany's biggest area of influence in modern football, pressing. If Klopp hadn't picked up Rangnick's ideas, then there's a good chance the entire idea would have fizzled out.

The entire basis of Dutch, Ajax, Barcelona, and Spanish football comes from two Englishmen whose view of how football should be played was thought on and iterated upon by Rinus Michels, Johan Cruyff, Louis van Gaal, and Pep Guardiola, all of whom were or are thinkers on football.

And then England just has a culture where it's actively detrimental to be a football thinker. Good for me, I suppose

as you see him walk out the dressing room you're like???? what do you think you're wearing??? and he's so confused cause you have never commented on his outfits before, unless its to compliment him so he's all like what?? just looking at you confused. and you just stare at him with an expression that tells him he's being so dumb right now. but he's still not getting it so you have to spell it out for him. telling him that the grey sweats and compression shirt combo is lethal to anyone who sees him and that you're finding it hard not to jump his bones right now and make him late for training. he smirks over at you laughing as you glare at him making sure he hears you call him a slut as he walks away.
