Cover of the second volume of the graphic novel that Molly Ostertag wrote and i drew, Dungeon Club: Time to Party! it's coming out on July 9!!!
the series is about a group of 8th graders playing D&D. we delve into their in-game adventures and see how their real world experiences shape the campaign. you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll want to play your own session lol! it's a lot of fun and i love drawing every page.
I colored this cover, but the interior colors are by Amelia Allore and they are SO beautiful. please check it out, u gotta see it!!

I have always loved Molly Knox Ostertag's work, in particular the really cute, heartwarming tact of the Witch Boy trilogy's trans allegory and the way it feels so well built to walk that fine line of appropriately nuanced but still perfectly digestible for its intended teen audience.
Well The Deep Dark is more of precisely that style of writing and it blows me away just as much now as Witch Boy did the first time I read it. It's exactly the kind of book I wish I'd had as a kid, and the sort of thing that lights a little hopeful flame in the jaded dark corners of my heart. It's the sort of thing that helps me feel optimistic about a generation of kids who will grow up with this kind of story as their formative personal mythos.
I know I don't usually do reviews or recommendation on this blog so I dunno who this is for really, and it certainly won't have any particular reach, but if you find yourself with the chance to, I really can't recommend The Deep Dark enough. And of course everything else Molly Knox Ostertag has had a hand in, even the one's she's not been the sole author on.

Middle School Monday: Dungeons & Dragons: Dungeon Club: Roll Call by Molly Ostertag & Xanthe Bouma
Olivia Descheene and Jess Aguilar are starting the eighth grade together. For years, they used to play Dungeons & Dragons by themselves -- Olivia as the DM and Jess as the solo adventurer. Now Olivia wants to invite more people to play with them, but Jess isn’t thrilled with the idea of sharing their game. Jess thinks about D&D so much that sometimes she imagines character sheets for people she encounters in real life, like the good kids and the mean kids in school. But instead of D&D characteristics like strength, dexterity, charisma, and armor class, Jess imagines criteria like “bully potential” and “popularity class.”
Will Jess be able to accept new people joining their friendship circle as well as their game? And which will prove to be more challenging -- surviving middle school or slaying monsters?
This is an imaginative and colorful story, and it will have plenty of appeal both to fans of Dungeons & Dragons and readers who want to learn more about the game. Give this graphic novel to older kids and younger teens who enjoy role-playing games, diverse characters, and stories about the power of imagination.

🎲 D&D Dungeon Club: Roll Call (1) by Molly Knox Ostertag and Xanthe Bouma
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Ahhhhh, what a fabulous book to read for the New Year! I started this on December 31 and finished it today, January 1.
Roll Call! Jess and her friend Olivia have been best friends since third grade and have been playing Dungeons & Dragons for near as long. Entering into eighth grade in middle school feels eerily like a dungeon, especially when Olivia wants to add more people to their group and Jess wants things to just be them. How will they manage?
Being someone who’s gotten into D&D, reading this cute and wholesome graphic novel about friendship and storytelling was such a great start to the New Year. It really got into how we create our characters and how D&D or other RPGs can help us navigate real life situations.
I highly recommend!
(I’m about to force my partner to read this 😈)

I'm really excited for the anime-watchers to watch this week's episode of Dungeon Meshi. Art inspired by Club 9 by Makoto Kobayashi.

Steve would absolutely be down to play D&D with Hellfire. The only condition is that he gets to be whatever character he wants (with Eddie's help crafting the sheet, of course), and Eddie is so completely enamoured and excited that he agrees wholeheartedly.
Turns out, Steve didn't really understand the concept of fantasy characters and assumed that it included all kinds of fantasies. Elves, Dwarves, Mages.
And naturally the lineup of Steve's 1987 Fantasy Basketball League.
The rest of Hellfire is ultimately accepting of it, and even gets into the character as time goes on. But those first few sessions were confusing as hell. Especially because they weren't quite sure what to think when Steve's only supplies and weapons included sports bars, tiny shorts, and a basketball.
Eddie though?
Eddie's been having a goddamn field day with the chaos his beloved hath wrought.
"Alright Steve. Roll to attack."
Steve rolls and lights up. "Eighteen!"
The other players cheer.
"Good luck," said Will sullenly after his magic missile failed to take the villain down. In fact, so far, nearly every attack from each member had failed to do enough damage to even make a dent.
Eddie writes down a note behind his DM shield. "Alright so the ghost approaches you. What are you..." He pauses. "Wait. Sorry what's your name again?"
"Larry Bird," says Steve helpfully.
"Right. What are you, Larry Bird, going to do to the Ghost?"
"I'm going to dribble across the enchanted bridge and hit him with a hook shot."
"This is the weirdest thing we've ever done..." Dustin whispers.
He's shushed by everyone else who has become absolutely invested in the fate of their resident Point Guard Paladin.
(the best part is that the end of the campaign in what was meant to be a difficult and long battle, in which almost every single Hellfire character dies a gruesome death, Steve effectively ends it by rolling a single D20 and dunking a zombie's head into the Boss' face.
Hellfire is elated but isn't sure how to explain to future Hellfire members that a kill shot was once carried out by the small forward of the Boston Celtics.)
