There were two little fellows and a new baby at home in 1938, but in total Don Ameche and Honore Prendergast Ameche would have 6 children together: Don Jr., Ronald, Thomas, Lawrence, Barbara, and Constance. Throughout their childhoods (and for some their whole lives), the children were known by their nicknames: Donnie, Ronnie, Tommy, Lonnie, Bonnie, and Connie—with parents Don and Hon.

Don Ameche was a Roman Catholic. He met Honore in a church choir sometime between 1922 and 1926 in Dubuqe, Iowa where he was attending school. The two married in 1932 and remained married until Honore's death in 1986. They had separated long before Honore's death and he did not attend her funeral, though he had his ashes interred near hers in the Prendergast plot in Dubuque. In a 1988 interview with Roger Ebert, Don Ameche said of his love life and marriage:

Okay, so in Dubuque Iowa.

There is "Sundown Mountain". I happen to live ... nearby... this ski "resort" <- not much of a resort, just a place to board. Anyways, for the past 7 years I have been a season pass holder and I decided, being of age to get a job there, that I would... get a job there! AND SO I HAD TO GO THERE TODAY AND FILL OUT PAPERWORK AND I LIKE ALLREADY KNEW EVERYBODY AND IT WAS SO FUNNY AND THEN WE CHILLED AND I AM SO EXCITED, SO I AM ONLY DOING SKI CORRAL (WHICH IS BASICALLY A LOCKER ROOM FOR YOUR EXPENSIVE BOARD/SKIS AND YEAH), SO BASICALLY I TAKE PEOPLES GEAR PUT IT ON A SHELF GIVE THEM A TICKET AND THEN THEY DO WHATEVER AND WHEN THEY COME BACK OUT THEY GIVE ME THEIR TICKET AND I GIVE THEM THEIR DTUFF BACK AND IT ISN'T HARD AT ALL AND IT'S ONLY BUSY SOMETIMES ND IT'S GANNA BE GREAT BECAUSE I GET TO DO HOMEWORK AND READ AND PLAY GAMES AND LISTEN TO MY OWN MUSIC WHILE ON THE JOB AT THE PLACE I LOVE AND OMG I AM SO EXCITED AND YEAH, AND THEN ... SAY... IT'S A SATURDAY AND I WORK 11-3 ... SO I GO OUT AT 9... BOARD TILL 10:30, EAT BREAKFAST IN THE KITCHEN (WITH MY 10% OFF EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT WHICH IS GREAT BECAUSE THEIR STUFF IS ALWAYS SUPER EXPENSIVE) THEN HEAD DOWN TO THE CORRAL WITH MY HOMEWORK... DO HOMEWORK AND SHIT BETWEEN EXCHANGING GEAR AND TICKETS AND THEN I GET OFF AND BPARD AGAIN UNTIL 11pm!!!!
