How to Become a Conscious Consumer?

Upon completing my morning meditation routine, I happened to glance over to our small bin which was brimming with plastic needing to be emptied for recycling. It really hit me hard as although we are conscious of our waste on a daily basis and try to avoid using plastic at all costs, it still seems to be pervasive. Granted our consumption is probably way less than the average person but it’s still unnecessary consumption nonetheless.

I have always heard and seen various people, especially on Instagram who claim to be living zero waste lifestyles. According to Wikipedia, “zero waste is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource lifecycles so that all products are reused. The goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators or the ocean.” Similar to up-cycling, where the idea is to reuse waste as materials to make something that can be of use. One such company in Dubai is Kayfactor who uses waste to create art pieces and installations. This is the exact kind of thinking that more people and corporates need to adopt. If you have waste, instead of just discarding it without a thought, think about the potential use it may have in your daily life. You never know, it may just be an idea that turns into a business that positively contributes to protecting the future of our planet.

Together with the zero waste lifestyle is minimalism which, “is a tool to rid yourself of life’s excess in favour of focusing on what’s important - so you can find happiness, fulfilment and freedom.” Believe these terms are inextricably linked in that cutting down your waste will ultimately lead to less clutter (both mental and physical) which invariably leads to less things and more conscious consumerist decisions to be made. Obviously this is the basic definition of minimalism but it too is a philosophy and a way of life for many people.

These two lifestyles are favourable in that people are achieving such objectives on a daily basis, which should prove that this is possible. That said, I will be challenging myself to live a zero-waste lifestyle for a week and will be reporting my daily experiences so as to highlight the challenges and successes as well as share the resources that are used to live waste-free as we can all learn from each other.

Upon sifting through my brimming bin, it became apparent that most of the plastic is coming from food packaging. And coincidentally, most of the plastic is coming from ordering organic produce through a third party food delivery service. Off the bat, one way to reduce is to procure items from farmer’s markets where no plastic is being used to wrap vegetables which in itself is a silly idea as the packaging around natural produce is perfect already. However, there is a cost implication to this, no longer will there be a delivery coming to your home with a box of organic fruits and vegetables. Instead, you have to make time to find farmers markets where they do not use packaging for their products. The whole point of plastic is centred around convenience and that as a resident of Dubai, most of the produce is travelling great distances and as such these methods are used to protect the produce from damage.

As consumers we have a voice, that voice is physical but it is also monetary where we can use our purchasing power to effect change. I believe all supermarkets and third party produce delivery companies need to be adapting a more planet friendly approach to distributing their products to the public. And the move towards greener solutions has already been noticed. We are also encouraging supermarkets to include plastic free aisles in their stores. There are many ongoing initiatives and there is change occurring but we can all do better - I for one, can do better and will do better!

I’d love to know where most of your waste at home is coming from? Perhaps you will join the challenge too and become more aware of your consumption and waste. That said, the whole idea is to become conscious of our choices and make small changes to create a lasting impact. For the next 7 days, beginning on Wednesday 17 October to Tuesday 23 October, I will commit to living a zero waste lifestyle and track my progress each day.

Ways that I know I will succeed already is by using a reusable water bottle for refilling and reusable bags for shopping. I especially look forward to the future when establishments across the UAE have access to drinking water points so that people can easily refill their bottles. Believe this small shift will reduce huge amounts of plastic going to landfill which will create awareness across the population.

Similar to the concept of Refill Bali - Refill Dubai would be such a statement to the world as it would show a city that cares for the environment and it’s people. That said, the rules for the zero-waste challenge will be to go about my daily life by using my purchasing power to make decisions that are sustainable and that do not produce waste/have an impact on the environment. The whole idea behind the challenge is to begin to start living more simply, away from distraction, noise and pollution. Start to become aligned with your inner self and connect to your ultimate purpose in life. That said, clean up your home and become an agent of change as the world needs more actualised souls to spread sustainable education .
