Dua to find true love

(center Tangerine icon by @cherriedt that was linked on pinterest, and the rest of them are just from pinterest :/, and the pictures of the necklace and the dress aren't meant to show the reader, just the kind of outfit I was picturing, it just happened to be Dua Lipa's met gala necklace and Lady Gaga)
Requested by my love and my life (but I forgot to put this under that and I'm in too deep) @loving-and-dreaming thank you for everything you've ever sent me, asked me, or tagged me in <33<333 Warnings: None graphic violence, bruising, bleeding, language (duh), smoking and sickeningly rich people el oh el WC: 2.7k and not proof read
When your mother invited you to one of her friends’ charity galas, this is hardly how you expected the night to go. You slipped into that black velvet gown that she offered you, with the perfect neckline to show off the necklace that was a gift from both your parents for your last birthday. The one with the fat diamond right in the center. It was certainly the gem to talk about. It even made quite a few headlines.
And it was certainly the talk of tonight, with half the conversations you had almost certainly leading to their eyes being drawn to your chest within the first 30 seconds. And for a masquerade, it was quite hard to remain anonymous when the thing was practically a shimmering name tag. Which was a fact you came to regret sooner rather than later.
About an hour after you arrived, after finding your table with your parents and greeting your friends, another masked man asked you to dance. He was tall, with quite the head of thick brown hair, and a hell of a mustache. But there was something about him that you couldn’t quite place, as you made polite conversation on the ballroom floor. His accent, maybe.
“May I ask where you’re from?”
“Oh well, that’s hardly the point of a masquerade now, love.” You spun away on cue and he drew you back in. “It’s about the mystery.” And with that the waltz ended with his chest against your back and your breathing heavier than it has been with any other partner that night. You tried to clear your throat quietly, with the way he was breathing down your neck. He was so overwhelming, what with his deep blue suit in such subtle contrast to the sea of black you were swimming in, and the strength of his arms that he didn’t use against you, but with you as he led you through the dance.
You twirled out of his arms and bowed along with the rest of the ladies on the floor. You nodded in gratitude for the dance then left to go find your friends with a shake of your head. “Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ.”
“Looking a little winded there,” your closest, and most likely only true friend, Remington (or Remy to you), offered you her arm as you aimed for the restroom in hopes of a chance to catch your breath. Once inside, you reached into one of your deep pockets that were hiding beneath the voluminous fabrics of your skirt to pull out a small pack of cigarettes. You slipped one of the few remaining sticks between your lips and fumbled through your other pocket for the lighter you couldn’t reach. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
“You have a better one?” Remy sighed and took her zippo out of her little handbag. “Thank you, dahlin’,” you put on an accent like the man you’d danced with.
“Ooh, so you’ve met the mysterious gentleman.”
“Dance with him too.”
“Oh my.”
“Oh yes.” You looked over your makeup in the mirror and checked your hair.
“Why does it smell like cherries?”
“They’re flavored.”
“That’s literally worse than smoking on its own.”
“I know but…cherries.” You took a final drag then stamped it out on the side of the sink and brushed the ashes down the drain. “Alright, gotta go get yelled at by my mother.”
You both gave each other salutes before you went back out into the hall and she went into a stall. There was a strange sound coming from around the other corner of the hallway towards the ballroom. It was most likely some sleazy billionaires’ sons thinking much higher of themselves than anyone should, so it was best to move on back to your table.
The whole time you sat there, you’d often catch eyes with the mysterious man from earlier. You didn’t see him dance with anyone else, but when you looked at him and looked like you meant to really look at him, and leaned back in your chair, he took that as a sign to ask you for another dance.
He wordlessly offered you his hand, which you took with more grace than he’s ever seen. He led you to the floor with a hand on the small of your back and you both assumed your positions for the most intimate dance of the night, it wasn’t too fast but it was very intricate and required you to trust your partner.
The music started and he was the best partner you’ve ever had. The way he lead you was perfect, every dip was like being held as a feather, every lift felt like floating, and every step was like walking on water. “You smell like cherries…and smoke.” He said as he brought you down from the lift.
“Hmm.”
“Didn’t think to share?”
“Didn’t think you’d be interested.” You slid your hand over his left shoulder as the dance required and flicked his gold hoop with your finger.
“How’d you learn to dance like this?” He spun you out again and
“Swiss boarding school,” you answered as if it was obvious.
“Figures.” You didn’t see the way he looked down at your necklace over your shoulder, you felt it more. “Dance with me again, love?” He turned his head so you felt his words too.
You hummed a yes and resumed your positions. 3 dances later, he tilted his head to one of the doorways that lead to a vast balcony. You nodded in agreement and took the arm he offered.
Once you were out there, alone, the only sounds were the busy city below you and the flick of his lighter behind you. You braced your hands on the railing behind you and watched the way the light of the small flame refracted through his eyes like a kaleidoscope. Once he brought his hand down you saw the slim cigarette and then smelt the cherries that followed. “That’s not yours.”
He put that hand down next to you on the railing and stood right in front of you, almost caging you in. “It’s much nicer to share, love.”
“You expect me to share my things when you won’t even share your name?”
“I don’t recall you tellin me yours either.”
“Didn’t think I had to.”
“Really?” His accent seemed more present now when he was all you could hear, not the music or the bustling crowd. “She’s that sure of herself, eh?”
“I can’t help it if most people, especially in a crowd like this, know who I am. Are you telling me you don’t?”
He used his other hand to flick the ashes off over the railing, now really caging you in. You took it from him when he was bringing it up to his mouth, drawing a smooth breath while he gave you a disapproving twitch of his mustache. He didn’t answer your question beyond a shrug.
“I can’t even get a first name out of you? Nothing?”
“How’s Tangerine?”
You smirked with a scoff of a laugh, he didn’t look very happy with that. “Like the fruit?”
“Yes, like the–”
“Your mother named you after a little orange?”
“She didn’t– No, it’s an alias.”
“Ooh, a code name then?”
“Yes.”
“What for? You hiding from something?”
“In a sense.”
“I think you’d have to be. A fake name and a mask, I think you mean business.”
“And what do you fancy that business is?” He traced a finger down your collarbone to the chain of your necklace until he reached the large stone resting on your chest. Usually, such a thing, focusing only on the jewelry, would be an absolute turnoff. But for some reason, it was different when he did it.
“I’d say something–” You were cut off by a strange figure moving at the other end of the balcony. “What was…” It was his turn to smirk at that as another man emerged from the shadows. He was a little bit taller than “Tangerine,” and his coily hair was bleached almost to white besides the roots, but he had the same earring.
“Evenin’, I’m Lemon.”
You rolled your eyes at what your night has come to, you knew better than to go anywhere with strangers with masks and no name. “Oohh, Lemon and Tangerine, clever,” you bit sarcastically and pushed Tangerine off of you a little harder than he must have been expecting with the way he stumbled back.
Lemon looked at Tangerine like he expected such a reaction. “Listen, love,–”
“I’m not your ‘love’,” you mocked his accent and Tangerine tilted his head with his eyebrows raised and his lips in a thin straight line. With a wave of your hand, you let him go on.
“You’re gonna keep the mask on, we’ll walk outta here, real calm, and it’ll all be over soon.”
“I’d really rather not.” You went to take a step back inside but Tangerine caught your arm. Again, really not how you wanted your night to go. You rolled your head to the side and looked at him like he was boring you. You wrenched your arm from his grip and Lemon tried to catch you too, but you ducked under that and landed a swing to Tangerines cheek, knocking his mask to the ground. This was one of those rare occasions that he looked better under the mask, but there was no time to dwell on that when he lunged towards you. You dodged that as well, but it was difficult for them to keep you away from the doors and windows so no one inside would notice, and it was difficult for you to watch both of them at once and also move in such a dress.
It was quite a tussle, “Where did you learn to fuckin fight like this?!” Tangerine groaned as you had one arm around his neck and the other under his arm coming over yours, only restricting him as much as you needed to get him to stop.
“Swiss boarding school.”
Lemon huffed with his hands on his knees then stepped towards you. You pushed Tangerine at him and ran to the nearest door. Just as you were stepping into the ballroom, hair a mess and cheek smudged with makeup and blood from one of Tangerine’s rings, someone stepped in front of you and blocked your path. It a second to recognize them but with a blink it was all too clear. Remy pushed you back and Tangerine had you by both wrists behind you.
“Let’s go then,” she said definitively, making you laugh. “What?” She barked.
“Like this? As if everyone isn’t looking at me anyway, I think they might if I look like this.”
“You don’t look any worse than usual.”
“Remington, that is a ridiculous thing to say, and no, I mean people might fucking notice if I look like I’m being kidnapped.”
She nodded to the man behind you and after a sharp strike to the back of your head, you were out.
***
You woke with a twitch of your nose and a throbbing pain to your left cheek and right temple. There was a tickling on your eyelid that made you want to sneeze, and you could feel the cold of the bathroom tile through your skirts. “Stop moving.”
“Can I fucking breathe for a second? Jesus Christ.” She backed off from you and held up the makeup brushes in annoyed surrender.
“Put the mask back on, then we’ll go.”
“Go where?”
“It might be easier if you stay quiet, love.”
You went to push yourself up but your hands were restrained behind your back so you you suffered with turning your aching neck to look at Tangerine instead, noticing his tie was missing. “Might be easier if you let me go, and you kidnap literally anyone any less recognizable.”
He cracked his knuckles and looked like he was going to step towards you but Lemon held him back and started talking about what sounded like Thomas the Tank Engine. The choo choo’s Lemon was saying were not helping their case.
Remington grabbed your chin and looked you over. “You look fine. Put your mask on.” She threw it at you then seemed angry when you didn’t act immediately. Tangerine came behind you and lifted you up and Lemon stood in front and did your mask. In all their years, he had to have been the least professional of all their clientele.
“Is this how you typically spend your Saturdays?”
“Kidnapping ridiculously rich women for other ridiculously rich women?” Lemon asked and you nodded. “It’s usually our day off.”
“You were a special case.” Tangerine said as he untied your wrists and redid his tie.
“How sweet.” You shook out your wrists and Remington took you through back through the halls leading to the ballroom.
You want to run up to one of the guards or guests or literally anyone, you want to throw elbows and break Remington’s jaw, but you don’t know what they have on them, you don’t know if they’re working with anyone else. It’s best to go along with it and keep everyone else safe, just keep your wits about you and your head high. It’s not like you were particularly visible at the moment, walking close to the wall with Tangerine on your left and Lemon on the right between you and the rest of the crowd with both your hands in the crook of their elbows. Your face must have betrayed the depth of your thoughts since Tangerine put his other hand on top of yours, funny of him to try and comfort you when he’s more than aiding in your kidnapping. “Where's the smile? They're going to think I'm holding you hostage, honey.”
“Sorry.” You tried to find some humor in his sarcasm but the reality was tumbling at you too fast and your cheek was beginning to bruise.
“Like I said, it’ll be over soon.”
There was a black car waiting outside, and at least Lemon held the door open for you to get in the back seat then helped make sure none of your skirt got caught in the door. He sat with you and Tangerine drove while Remington sat in the passenger seat. It was hard to stifle a scoff when she tried to put her hand on his wrist as he shifted, only for him to immediately bring it back to the wheel. It was a busy European city, difficult to navigate its crowded streets but he managed.
“Can you roll down the window a little bit? I need some air.” You asked sweetly, meekly so they might be more inclined to acquiesce. Besides the initial fight and your sharp tongue, Tangerine thought you’d been quite cooperative, so he lowered it a few inches.
Just enough space for you to unclasp your necklace and throw it out the window. It was at that horrific moment that the car slowed down exponentially and in the instant Remington saw what you did she let out a horrific scream. Yelling “What the fuck is wrong with you, you bitch?!?!?” at the top of her lungs like you threw her ten million dollar necklace out the window, not your own. She jumped out the car to go find it and slammed the door behind her just as the traffic was letting up.
“Did she pay you already?” You said hurriedly.
“You think we’d be dealing with her shit if she didn’t.”
“So you’ll drive?”
“To get away from that fuckin bitch? Anything.” He slammed his foot on the gas and wove between cars.
“What about your necklace?” Lemon asked.
“This one?” You pulled it out of your deep pocket and they both whooped and laughed at your cunning.
“You’re something else, love.”
“Thank you.”
“So, where to?” Still going top speed on the now open road.
“Wherever you like.”
thank you for reading and I just want to remind you that if you really want to appreciate your writers, comments and reblogs especially are the way to go, that's how things circulate here and as much as I appreciate the likes, your words mean more than I could ever express

► BIOGRAPHY
TW; death mention, alienation, family bullying
Camila was born to a maid who couldn’t take care of her. With the financial state the woman was in, she wound up giving the baby up for adoption. Whose hands did Camila wind up in? Oh, just an oil tycoon and his wife who couldn’t have a baby of their own. Being raised with a silver spoon in her mouth made her life more difficult. Someone always wanted something from her, and soon Mila realized that people will only ever see her as a dollar sign. She burned bridges at any point someone showed their true intentions with her, and she justified it by believing it was to protect herself from more hurt than she was already enduring behind the scenes. Being adopted made her a target in her cousins’ eyes; Always ganging up on her at family functions and claiming she wasn’t really a Singh. She was alienated - cast aside by her so-called aunts and uncles. Maybe that’s why it didn’t hurt to be going to so many funerals, growing up. It was on her father’s side of the family - the side she was never to come into contact with due to the drug and alcohol abuse that ran rampant in those genes. She became cold during her middle school years, though it wasn’t like she really had anyone to be cold to, seeing that she was homeschooled. It was when she had to attend high societal events, that she was seen as a sort of ice queen. She was withdrawn, and that came across as snobbish. In actuality, she didn’t care. Mostly because that meant she didn’t have to hear what people wanted from her. For someone who was homeschooled, she excelled in the SATs and ACTs. She turned down Harvard to go to Princeton for their Art & Design program. To Mila, the creative freedom of fashion design was enough to heal her inner child. She could be whoever she wanted, make a name for herself and inspire other children who found a sanctum doing what they loved. With her BA in Art & Design, Mila was able to become a fashion intern at one of her favorite fashion magazines. It was only recently that she also was given the chance to prove herself as a columnist for the zine. With her sniper-sharp focus, Mila is sure she’ll wind up happy achieving her dream one day. She just has a lot of obstacles to tackle before getting there.
► DEEP DIVE
Mila is strong in many ways than one. She works out, sure, but she can endure the emotional pain the size of an elephant in her chest. Her downfall is that she never wants to go to anyone about it - not even her closest friends. She doesn't want anyone to see how broken she truly is, so she hides it all behind her perfectly-glossed smile. She's guarded and it takes a bit to get her walls to come down to build a friendship, but when it occurs she's one of the best people to have a friendship with; A hype-woman in her own right, Mila is always one to celebrate others and she has a way of perfectly embedding herself under anyone's skin and staying there. She loves to make people laugh and she also loves to laugh. She goes out of her way to make everyone feel included. Sometimes things go over her head or she may say something that is taken the wrong way, which all goes back to the fact she was homeschooled and didn't have much socialization in her younger years. Overall, Mila is a fun time - she likes to live her life the way she wants and encourages others to do the same. She's just a broken bird hidden under a lioness, okay? Okay.

IN WHICH : 2 TEENS MEET EACH OTHER ON A BEACH CONCERT.
PAIRING : JODIO JOESTAR X GN! READER (AGE 15)
WARNINGS : mentions of alcohol (no intake dw), swearing
WC: like at least 18
Tumblr media
In Hawaii, beach concerts are a sort of...usual thing? Well, at least it is for your neighbourhood. It's a convenient place, as the beach is right beside your house, making it like a makeshift backyard for your family. Since many people have been interested in becoming up-and-coming DJs, beach concerts have been becoming something that is held once every fortnight. From RnB music to Pop, a huge variety of music is played for the entire neighbourhood to hear.
That's why one of these concerts had attracted Jodio and Dragona Joestar, both popular in the high school you're attending. Although both had some sort of...shady past, you're willing to look past that and see of yourself what sort of person they truly are. What? It's not like they sell.. psh.. drugs? Or something. Albeit you didn't expect the opportunity to reveal their true colours to arrive so quickly, you had vowed to make do with what spare time you had before this Saturday. You were already on a time crunch since, you know, it's fucking THURSDAY, and you have a project due tomorrow (fuck the teachers), you really had to struggle.
Soon, the fated day arive, where by the DJ, a renowned one, has been playing popular songs by the now-hit singer Ice Spice, the world-renowned Dua Lipa, and the of course, ever famous Eminem. You soon spotted the pair, Jodio in a loose AC/DC hoodie with black cargo pants, his hair always tied in his usual star, though the green star hairclip seems to be more radiant. Actually, HE himself seems to be more radiant. What the hell? Before you could question yourself for saying that he's literally fucking glowing, Dragona walks in and takes the spotlight away. Clad in a tight sweater with a heart boob window, along with the TINIEST jeans you have ever seen on someone, Dragona continues to amaze you with how he ever so continuously slays his outfits. Māhū's are really cool honestly, and Dragona is one of the first you met. He's a super cool guy too, though one could easily mistake him for a girl.
Firstly, you went over to the juice bar. Grabbing a plastic cup, you had spent a concerning amount of time deciding between white wine, grape wine and red wine. You went with sparkling lemon juice. Next, you had to find a way to get close to Jodio Joestar. He seems closed off, and, well, honestly really fucking scary. But, you decide to suck it up anyway and talk to him. What possible could go wrong?
EVERYTHING WENT FUCKING WRONG. Firstly, you spilled the lemon juice on his shoes, then offered to clean it up for him. By doing that, you accidentally fell over and landed face first in the goddamn sand. And when he offered to help you up, you MISSED HIS HAND? HOW DID YOU MISS HIS HAND?! It's okay, sort of? He kinda understood the situation you're in, and pitied you. I would too. How did you mess that up so badly. Holy shit. You guys had really, REALLY, uncanny similiar humour. Even Dragona was freaked out, but glad his brother could find a friend in somone of similiar age. Soon after that, you guys exchanged numbers. His profile picture is some obscure anime guy with a black hat and a Japanese student uniform? He looks really fierce, with the words "ゴゴ" surrounding him. Hm, perhaps this is some unknown special interest that Jodio has.
You got a "ping!" chime from your phone after leaving the concert. There wasn't really much to say, the concert had carried on like normal, though I suppose you may refer to it as a "party" rather than a concert. Seeing that the message notification was from Jodio, you quickly unlocked your phone and saw that he had sent one message and a sticker.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 19/10/2024 (Sabrina Carpenter, JENNIE, Brat Remix Album)
For an eighth week, bringing Sabrina’s annual total to 20 weeks at #1 this year (a feat not reached since Frankie Laine), “Taste” sticks to the top spot of the UK Singles Chart, and we’ve got another goofy week where our new entries aren’t really the main point of interest. Welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Tumblr media
content warning: language, way more sex references than normal
Rundown
As always, we start the episode with our notable dropouts, those being songs that exit from the UK Top 75 – which is what I cover – after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40. This week, we bid adieu to: “Going Crazy” by Nines with uncredited vocals from LEILAH, “Black Friday (pretty like the sun)” by Lost Frequencies remixing Tom Odell, “Numb” by Linkin Park, “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” by Ariana Grande and “I Can Do it with a Broken Heart” by Taylor Swift.
Now we also have two more songs dropping out that may be of more interest, specifically the premature dropouts for Charli xcx’s “Talk talk”, featuring Troye Sivan and an uncredited Dua Lipa on the remix, and “Guess”, her former #1 hit with Billie Eilish on the remix. These singles from Charli’s album would hypothetically have a boost given the release of her deluxe remix edition of BRAT, which I wrote about on my RateYourMusic listening log if you want more in-depth thoughts there, since there are actually no debuts from it. Instead, Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat has not only pumped its parent release to the top of the albums chart with no T-Swizzle to block it this time, but due to a three-song rule in the UK Singles Chart, it’s created what I can only call a switcheroo for songs that had charted before, but are now doing so in remix form. In that regard, we welcome back “360” at #20. The original peaked at #11, its book-end album closer counterpart “365” reached #63. As with many of the remixed versions, I far prefer the originals in both cases, but it is of course noteworthy to point out that Swedes Yung Lean and Robyn feature on the fragmented, awkward “360” remix that works pretty wearingly as an album opener; I used to prefer it, but now, I find it just okay. The Official Charts Company has not credited them, and the case rings true for “Apple” at #11, which was still charting but takes a boost to #11. Previously peaking at #8, the remix would be the first chart appearance for English indie singer-songwriter Amber Bain, known as “The Japanese House”. For new fans, I remember listening to her 2019 debut Good at Falling and whilst I fell off the ship at some point, there’s definitely stuff worth hearing there. I’d probably like it even more now. However, OCC decided to credit only one of the guest remix artists, that being Ariana Grande who grants a new peak with her… completely serviceable but uninteresting remix of the great “Sympathy is a knife”. Originally peaking at #56, Ari takes it straight to #7 off of the return, and it’s not the only new top 10 entry this week.
We do have a fair few non-Brat gains and returns too, namely “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay taking the space of one of their new singles at #72, “Scared to Start” by Mchael Marcagi restarting at #70, “NEW DROP” by Don Toliver coming back at #69 and I have a feeling this will be one of those songs that just comes back and forth, then Andy C and Becky Hill seeing a return to #66 with “Indestructible”, thanks to a remix from drum and bass DJ Disrupta that OCC seems to think is a new song. Congratulations to Disrupta for his first chart entry… I suppose if you count formatting errors and misremembering chart positions as valid debuts, the remix is fine. You know what’s not? “Riptide” by Vance Joy up to #61, but our other gains see boosts for “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls at #59, “KEHLANI” by Jordan Adetunji at #58, “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift at #52, “Free” by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding at #47, “Austin (Boots Stop Workin’)” by Dasha at #40, “Don’t Dream it’s Over” by Crowded House at #32, “Move” by Adam Port, Stryv and Malachiii at #10, with all acts gaining their first top 10 thanks in part to an uncredited Camila Cabello remix, and Trippie Redd also grabbing his first with, you guessed it, KSI on “Thick of It” at #8, its Prime position thus far.
As for our top five on this week’s UK Singles Chart, we start with “Somedays” by Sonny Fodera, Jazzy and D.O.D at a new peak of #5, followed by another new peak for Gracie Abrams at #4 with “I Love You, I’m Sorry”… can’t say I’m too over the Moon about either of these in the top five, but I am pretty happy with “Sailor Song” by Gigi Perez making it up to #3, then of course, “Die with a Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars as the runner-up at #2 to Sabrina once again at #1 with “Taste”. Now we’ll have more on Sabrina later, but for now, let’s take a look-see at what’s below her.
New Entries
#74 – “Why Lie?” – Skepta and Flo Milli
Produced by Lex Luger, PotentGYFT, Kesh and Carson Hackney
I am of the opinion that Skepta would have much more respect in general music-loving audiences for his influence, talent, catalogue and unique approach to hip hop production if he didn’t fuck around in questionable, perpetually brow-raising side quests, but oddly, he would lose some of my respect if he stopped doing that. He’s constantly got a look out for new collaborators and new sounds to crib from, and even when he doesn’t fully understand it, he’ll co-opt it, well-intentionally, and make… something of it. I figured that maybe the recent Ryder remixes and his EDM tracks, including a remix of Amy Winehouse, would push him into ambient house territory or something, but he quickly disproved that by just dropping whatever. After his latest track to chart, “Gas Me Up (Diligent)”, itself some AWGE-adjacent cloud-trap, he released an Afrobeats track with JAE5 and then got on a bit of a sexy drill kick (he’s just like me, for real). These singles are all potentially from an upcoming album, but would be confusing as a whole package, as he equipped PoWR Trav for the R2R Moe and Jorja Smith-assisted “Miss Independent”, using typical Cash Cobain-esque tense drum patterns and buzzy bass over a distant R&B sample, whilst Skepta raps mostly about sex, sometimes in too much detail. I’m not ageist, and Skep’ looks great, but I’m not always looking for middle-aged sex raps.
Relationships are once again the topic on “Why Lie?” but after going through Afrobeats and sexy drill, he’s chasing after yet another bubbling trend in not-exactly-mainstream-yet hip hop, “new jazz”, a trap subgenre taking a chiller approach to rage synthwork with much more wonkiness. Alabama rapper Flo Milli, herself no stranger to switching genre, has been recruited here for a duet that involves Skeppy getting into a Young Adz-level faletto on the chorus as Milli’s breathily cooing below him, then interchanging bars on a beat that has tiny details that never take up too much space, still leaving it slightly empty, to fit for the sheer amount of vocal layers and filters present, often somewhat extraneous and occasionally acting as arbitrary censorship. The main conceit of the song is that Skep’ thinks that Milli’s probably cheating, but doesn’t seem to care too much, because after a while, the sex is good enough for their slightly frayed connection to repair itself. Neither rapper will admit to lying to each other in the relationship, but are under the impression that if they really love each other, they’re just going to sugarcoat all the problems in the relationship anyway, and not think about the toxicities too deeply. It’s a really unique and honestly somewhat depressing relationship dynamic portrayed here, with the immediate contradictions present being pointed out and laid out quite openly. Milli is desperate to have sex after Skepta’s exhausting live show despite wanting to “take it slow”, both acts seem to care more about money accumulation than each other but still hold hope in the strength of their love – it’s not the most subtle song about relationships, but it allows for a lot of good trade-off displaying both the charming sensuality of Flo Milli and the chinks hidden in Skepta’s noble façade.
As far as my opinion on the song overall, I love the squelchy bass sound and the delayed feeling of the chorus coming in that fits the whole song having a staggered sense to its bass hits, sloppier drum programming and cascading, shimmering melodies, forming sonically the sound of this fragmented relationship they seem to work through in real time. This wonkiness is clearly cribbed in part from the similarly messy 2000s pop-rap classic “What’s it Gonna Be?!” with Busta Rhymes and Janet Jackson, which “Why Lie?” subtly samples. The chorus is genuinely hilarious as well as an earworm, with Skepta lamenting to his boys in an auto-croon that she’s probably having sex with another man, before a deadpan ad-lib that “She might as well” preludes his one-line falsetto run about he’s going to go on a business trip anyway, leaving her in the dust. There are doorbell sound effects, some of the best ad-libs on the chart – Skepta ending the hook by whispering “(Sex)” is such a stupid detail – and the overt detail in the analogy that the sex was so emotional that not only did he nearly shed a tear, but she “cried” too if you get the jist. Skep’s verse has the bass clunkily fall over him right after he details the outright falsehood that Flo Milli is a “ride-or-die” type and throughout, his flow is about as slippery… I’m not going to complete that sentence.
I love how the final chorus is led in without the drums by Flo’s panned whispering too, as the song is structurally all over the place but proud enough of that fact to add these quirky details, including some that seem improvised – Skep’ interrupts his verse to ask his mic to be turned up in a way that shouldn’t fit the flow or content, even rhyme scheme, at all, but works out because its execution is as chaotic and befuzzling as the relationship it depicts. I didn’t expect to be discussing this song at all, in all honesty, let alone in this much detail, as it has barely charted in the first place, but this is one of my favourite songs of the year, absolutely some of the most fun I’ve had with pop-rap in a year that has either had little of it or peppered with detailed interpersonal conflict. I hope that it can become a hit, because it absolutely could get radio play or become a meme… if not both. Check it out.
#60 – “The Days” – Chrystal
Produced by Chrystal and Billen Ted
Billen Ted, probably best known for the “Wellerman” remix, have found a new vehicle in the slow-burn breakout single for Chrystal. Though active since 2014, with a remix of their 2015 debut single “All Ur Love” being the only other reasonable success for them on streaming services, Chrystal has, from my understanding, largely kept a low profile, with this new song having crept up to the top 75 after a few weeks bubbling under, though it may be reminiscent of a larger trend. We’ve seen with nimino, PAWSA and a few other stray songs that weirder, more insular, often old-school and sometimes minimal house music by lesser-known artists, possibly thanks in part to the experimentation and innovation of acts like Fred again.., is starting to solidify a place in the lower reaches of the UK charts, and it’s been relatively hit and miss so far, which is understandable. These are lower-budget, very much lower-profile acts who bring their relative anonymity to the basic rhythms and airy atmospheres of their music, and “The Days” is no different. The cheap, dime-a-dozen four-on-the-floor beats sound exhausted especially with all the swooshing effects phasing in and out, and Chrystal themselves, assuming they’re the one singing, reminisces about chilling, smoking, having their partner’s favourite show on the background, and wanting to relive that whilst having some uncertainty about if that relationship is actually what it seems. I love the vocal filter that makes her distant in the pre-chorus, resembling the audio qualities of a post-chorus, the basic and desperate plead of “Do you?” acting as the “drop” or “hook” when in reality, like “TOO COOL TO BE CARELESS”, which has grown on me, there’s not much of a drop or hook at all, as the song builds about as lethargically as EDM possibly could. Stuttering synth bloops and a heavier, fuzzy bass are about as detailed as this song gets, and I find it honestly fascinating how empty the song is. These types of house jams we’re seeing always end up on a bittersweet note due to the woozy nonchalance with which they’re structured and produced, and whilst I’m not always a fan, not only is it funny to see those lazy Nate Dogg remixes that popped up turn into something worthwhile, but it’ll be interesting to see if this obscure phenomenon continues into a larger trend.
#37 – “Mantra” – JENNIE
Produced by JUMPA, El Guincho, Șerban Cazan and Jelli Dorman
Another week, another K-pop track that will probably not last too long but makes for a smashing top 40 debut, this time yet another latch at solo stardom from a BLACKPINK solo member. Though I’ve found it difficult to distinguish the girls as solo artists thanks to a lack of cohesive sound, they are at least more interesting on average than the BTS solo attempts, and yeah, this is about as chaotic as you could expect. Billed as a “pretty girl mantra”, JENNIE’s condescending sing-songy chorus is intensified by a stretching, nigh-indecipherable loop pushed to the back of the mix by a bunch of sounds, including an obnoxious stab of keys and horns, heavily involved bassy rhythm section and JENNIE herself, whose melodic ad-libs are fighting for attention with not just her own multi-tracking but stray “hey” vocal blips, a spray of house bass synth, and a cascading plunge into atmospheric synth mess… until that chorus brings the focus back into a different kind of chaos. Hell, it even has a set of panning cowbells that don’t let up once JENNIE starts singing the busier post-chorus, with a multi-tracked half-belt at the end making way for some of the most detailed and confusing vocal production I’ve heard on the charts in a while. Several layers of “oh” harmonies plate up below twinkling takes of breathy cooing, bordering on whispering, and just actual breathing, that never fully swings back into a full register. That little detail is particularly interesting given how much of the song is confident flexing, perhaps hinting that the light she scoffs at having dimmed may have gone off after all. Whilst substanceless lyrically, it has less awkward turns of phrase than a typical English-language BLACKPINK track, though I'm raising an eyebrow at how she'll supposedly turn me bisexual, and it goes for a more specific sound that could actually form unique character rather than an aping of other songs or artists that K-pop acts sometimes fall into when chasing western trends. It works as more of an amalgamation in a charmingly messy way, and that’s where K-pop acts tend to be at their best for me: embracing styles and genres in an endless pile-up that goes for shock and drastic twists and turns whilst retaining incessant hooks. “Mantra” falls squarely into that category, and is actually her second I’ve enjoyed after “You & Me” – given the BLACKPINK girls have been all over the place but often leaving a positive impression nowadays, I am interested in where any of these careers end up next, if the most reasonable angle isn’t to branch them all back together.
#9 – “Bed Chem” – Sabrina Carpenter
Produced by John Ryan and Ian Kirkpatrick
When I first listened to Short n’ Sweet, this song stood out as probably one of my least favourites, along with “Please Please Please”. Both have grown on me, so it makes it quite a fun coincidence that this week has swapped out the latter for “Bed Chem”, in yet another example of the silly three-song rule. I’m not necessarily complaining here: “Please” is still definitely a dud, just less so than I initially thought, whilst “Bed Chem” has won me over completely, mostly for the reasons that I disliked it in the first place. Sure, it’s cheesy and awkward in its heavy-handed sexual chemistry, framed in the context of her first meeting with her new partner, who in this case may specifically be her real-life partner, Irish actor Barry Keoghan, whose “thick accent” is mentioned in the pre-chorus. I may find the pitch-shifted vocal detail unbefitting for the otherwise vague attempt at organic soft rock, but it’s easily ignorable and the unnatural elements of the production overall, including the sprinkling sound effects and Sabrina herself, whose high-register chorus is so shrill and over-programmed that it used to just annoy me, and honestly still catches me by surprise, being genuinely a bit difficult to listen to for me in that hook. Surely, I wouldn’t rate it highly because of that... but aren’t people newly in a relationship all over each other and never out of each other’s mouths (in all possible ways that I could mean by that) always a bit annoying to the observer? The meek hints towards explicit lyrics are purposefully straight out of a PG-13 romcom, with audience chatter in the outro furthering the idea that this is all just a humorous portrayal of lovestruck youths, with all the awkwardly sexual banter and shimmering optimism intact. Sure, it’s not her most nuanced song emotionally, not that nuance has ever been Sabrina’s calling card, but it’s a lot of fun, needlessly catchy and an understandable fan favourite that I’m sure is both hilarious and incredibly difficult to perform live. With this as a replacement, Sabrina’s currently three for three for me in regards to her charting singles.
Conclusion
Weird week, but ultimately one pretty defined by a youthful chaos and attention to detail, that led to four frankly great songs – yes, every one, to the point where I can’t give out a Worst of the Week. Best of the Week goes to Skepta and Flo Milli, however, pretty easily, for “Why Lie?” as it takes ownership of its elements in a way that leans heavily into a narrative, placing it above JENNIE and just having more to it than Sabrina. Meanwhile, the isolated-feeling “The Days” by Chrystal takes the Honourable Mention for its uniquely muted sound that builds its own manic energy with so few elements that it has me really curious about the future of its genre. So, after this fantastic week, what’s to expect from next? Well, God forbid, we might have Yeat, but I consider it more likely that JADE or fellow BLACKPINKer ROSÉ show up, alongside maybe something from Kylie Minogue or Rag’n’Bone Man. Time will tell, however, and for now, thank you for reading, rest in peace to Liam Payne of One Direction, and I’ll see you next week!

Penrose Song of the Day Day 41: Feel Good by Gibbz ft. Russ Liquid
I'm having trouble writing because I'm having trouble deciding what's worth saying. What is there to say that hasn't been said already. I'm but one monkey with a typewriter, cut me some slack.
I've been thinking about taste, and recommendations, and what the music we like says about us. I've been thinking about arrogance, and cruelty, and a little bit about No True Scotsman fallacies, too. I just. I don't know. What is "good" music and why are so many people fans of "bad" music.
I don't think bad music even exists, at least not really. I think music like any medium has so many competing and often contradictory delivery methods, goals, audiences, and interpretations that a categorical verdict like that is, frankly, Quixotic. I think about things like Throbbing Gristle and Clown Core, like Taylor Swift and Imagine Dragons, like Jungkook and 21 Savage and JVKE and Drake and AJR and all of the people who would say you're not listening to "real music" or "good music". There's a pity that's normalized with the superiority of your music tastes.
On the other hand, the more you learn and deeper you dive into anything, the more repetition you hear. The more you see things as hackneyed or trite. You've seen it before, heard it before, etc. You learn when someone was stolen from, when an artist is just rehashing something or taking from an entire genre/subculture that they weren't part of. Wider eyes see the ugly truths right?
I don't know. It's tough. I wonder if there's an answer that's satisfactory.
I saw Gibbz live, actually. Back in... 2017? I was seeing... I think A SIlent Film? With my good friend Katie. This was back when she would suggest we go see a band and I would just say yes. I think Gibbz opened. I don't remember. Shout Out Rock and Roll Hotel, I miss that venue.
Gibbz wasn't what I was expecting. A little smooth, a little mischievous. Like a wink between good friends. Electronic but soulful. A Silent Film was more classic, traditional rock. Gibbz was one guy at the front with a synth and a crooner's deathgrip on the microphone.
I went up and spoke to him after his set. It was a small venue, he was an opening artist, I just told him I loved his stuff and I really loved I Really Love You (which is still my favorite Gibbz song, for the record). He was kind. He said thanks, and how it was humbling to be playing live. It was a nice interaction.
I think, given the time and money to do so, I want to get back to doing this. Just going to shows blind, of artists I've never heard of, in genre's I've never imagined.
What does all this have to do with taste. I meander, I know. I'll bring it back.
I think I have pretty basic, milquetoast tastes. I like pretty average music. I have a passing interest in things with more obscurity- I like melodic forms of metal, I keep a finger on the pulse of industrial for Lauren. I'm finding myself drawn more to house, classical, and jazz. I like Math Rock.
But cards on the table, my favorite type of music with a bullet is Hot Pop Girlies Having Fun (tm). The Sabrina Carpenters. The Dua Lipas. My second favorite type of music is apparently Men Being Sad (the Hoziers of the world). I don't think that's ever going to change. And I'm trying to be more ok with that. I'm trying to stop letting audience or surveilance or observation change what I like and what I enjoy. I'm trying to unlearn shame.
I don't know. I just want to listen to something I love. You know?
I've stopped sharing music with a lot of people in my life (I'm aware of the irony of having that rumination on this kind of post, thanks). There's like 3 people I share music with IRL and I basically only listen to music with headphones these days. I want to make music one day but I'm struggling to see what the point is. I gotta remember the effusive joy that comes from creation, but I also need to remember, somehow, some way, that sharing music is good, actually.
Anyways, enjoy this song. I hope you feel how this song feels, at least to me. Chill, soulful, grateful to be alive, and above all, I hope that you feel good.
You could be dead right now. Go listen to something you love.

Disco Margaritas -playlist
Georgette to Mim @madmagicmim
Disco margs a playlist for: that feeling when you take a sip of your first drink out with your closest friends, a cracking of a seltzer at a family gathering during the summer, dancing in the kitchen with your closest girls to an ABBA song on a Saturday night. A lifestyle, a moment, making memories, and shutting down all the silly bullshit.
🪩 Houdini (Adam Port mix) - Dua Lipa, Adam Port
Maybe you could be the one to make me stay. There isnt a single Dua Lipa song that isn’t an absolute bop. Even if they don’t admit it every girl dreams about a guy who can finally measure up and make her stay. No houdini act over here - not this time.
🪩 Stay High - Diplo, HUGEL, Julia Church
Staying in my play pretend; where the fun ain’t got no end. A remix of a Tove Lo song from 2014. If there is one thing that keeps past relationships no matter the kind at bay it’s a good song. No need to get to a higher level when this song is just as good.
🪩 Milkshake 20 (Alex Wann Remix) - Kelis, Alex Wann
Damn right it’s better than yours. The old banger from elementary school is still a hit. With a cool dance vibe it’s nothing like owning your own self confidence about what you’ve got! Can’t sing it without feeling yourself a bit. Confidence baby!
🪩 Teenage Crime - Adrian Lux
We don’t sleep when the sun goes down. This song just pulls you right to a bestie moment. Let it be when you were young and having a sleep over doing prank calls or staying out late causing a ruckus. It’s moments like that that tie to songs forever.
🪩 Like That - Seamus D
Argue, you yell, but you take me back. This song puts you back with your first love. The fairy tale of it all. Even if you don’t want to be whisked away there always that feeling of addiction when you’re with the one you first loved. You may not need to wish to take them back or to even find them but it isnt illegal to think about it.
🪩 Heaven Takes You Home (ft Connie Constance) - Swedish House Mafia, Connie Constance
Show 'em how the struggle made magic. There is something about a nice hug and that is what this song brings. There are many interpretations of the lyrics but when you get to the bottom of it its about people parting ways in some sense. Weather its good or bad it still feels like a good hug when you are going through a hard time.
🪩 Doses & Mimosas (Vintage Culture & Zerky remix) - Vintage Culture, Zerky, Cherub
Cryin' when you're by yourself 'Cause of what they think. Everyone loves a girl that is not afraid of consequences. Every girl has had the issues with feeling left out, bothered, or down - this songs is a big f you to them. Seeking the fun and high of a party is a a fictional ideal way to forget all about it...while dancing and vibing.
🪩 Love Runs Deep - Autograf, Tiina
You've been walking under dark clouds. Everyone has struggles and problems no matter who they are. This dong takes you from thinking about those problems and realizing that through love no matter the kind you can get through them. Just a feel good song to raise your mood no matter what the situation.
🪩 Waterloo - ABBA
The history book on the shelf is always repeating itself. This song may have its hidden meaning that everyone deciphers differently but that doesn't matter. This song alone can bring any mood from sour to sweet. Dancing and singing to this song in the shower, your car, the kitchen or with friends. Top 5 feel good songs.
🪩 Don’t Leave (Throttle remix) - Snakeships, MØ, Throttle
I'm a girl with a temper and heat. Own your true self. This song takes every quality of a fiery woman and puts it on the table. There is no reason to change who you are for someone and you are capable of being there for anyone no matter how hot you may be.
🪩 Sexual (Oliver Nelson Remix) - NEIKED, Dyo, Oliver Nelson
Now I caught you, I won't let you go. There is hidden meanings of this song but those are up to the listener to interpret. The song is just feel good and it is impossible to not vibe to. The song has been taken down a lot from streaming services but it definitely one to save.
Disco Margaritas is for the vibes darling. Love, Georgette

Hi dear! I have a question and I hope you can help me. Do you know if Hakim has ever spoken about his father's death in any video interview? I've read indirect quotes many times but I've never managed to find any source where he talks about it. I hope my request is not too depressing or out of place. I lost my father too recently and I'm just looking for comfort. Thank you, I love your blog and you're my favourite Hakim source 💕
Hi darling! I know my words are not going to mean much but just let me say that I'm so so sorry and I'm sending you hugs and please accept my condolences. Please know that if you ever feel like to reach out to me for anything, or talk literally about anything, I'll be here for you. I'll make dua for your lovely baba and I'm sending you all the love possible, ily anon very much. ❤️
I can think of this video here: (x) It's in dutch, but it has eng subs so you're able to understand. From 11:40. If it's okay for me saying this, please only watch when you feel ready to.
There is also another old video I know of, but it's in dutch without subs: (x). He talks about it in the very beginning. I don't understand dutch and while I remembered the content of his words I couldn't have told you the exact translation word by word. So I texted my dutch cousin for a quick translation (also the reason it took me hours, I'm so sorry for the wait <3. automatic subs just don't make much sense.) I'll put it here under the cut for you, please read when you feel like to.
I don't think there's anything else, but I will update if I'm mistaken and I remember anything else. Again, I'm sending you all the love in the world anon and a super tight hug, I'm here for you if you need anything. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Interviewer: "I was told that when you were 10, the biggest fan of you, your father, died, and that had a big impact."
"Yes, it had a great impact. Not just when it happened, but I had to grew up a bit to actually realise it. I realised that I've never really had a chance to live with my father and this is very hard for a young boy, to realise that you didn't have much and he couldn't spend much time in his life with you. When you lose your father this young, yes, this hurts a lot."
"Your mother told me that you couldn't go to your father's funeral back then."
"Yeah, it's true"
"Because you come from a family of nine siblings and you're weren't wealthy and not all of you kids could go to Morocco"
"It's true"
“But she brought you there at the age of 14, to see your father’s grave.”
"Yeah, she brought me. Yes, in that moment...you really start to realise that...he's resting there, and it'll be forever, and I remember what she said: "Try your best 100%. He is watching you and you're doing it for him" and that was the moment I really thought: "I will do it."

Salam girls<3
Yes, I have definitely learned from this, and as rueyam said, I am also closer to myself, alhamdulillah.
Bless him though, he tried very hard. He is a good guy, and I hope he finds someone who can give him what he is looking for. I appreciated what he has done, and I told him that. Not gonna lie, from the outside, we looked good together lol. Like a random uncle who would send his blessing when we were walking, and another uncle from the last meeting gave us free drinks and blessed us. I could feel the people around us.
Anyways, unfortunately, I just couldn't vibe with him. I never felt a true attraction towards him. Thinking about our future as a married couple was hard for me to imagine: like living in the same house, our conversations still lacking a vibe, things feeling very formal, and even simple intimate gestures like a hug would put me off. I know myself, I can be talkative and laugh easily if I feel like I'm on the same wavelength as another guy, and everything comes naturally. I'm not saying a guy needs to be perfect, I'm definitely not perfect either and have my own personal problems. Everything happens for a reason. Alhamdulillah.
No, thank you both<3<3 Thank you for giving me this space to write with you here and for encouraging and supporting me. It makes me so happy. May Allah bless you both. BarakAllahu feek for both of yours beautiful duas, and a BIG ameen to them. May Allah ease all your hardships and make your affairs clear for you. May He grant both of you happiness and success in this world and the hereafter, with your loved ones. Ameen.
If we still use Tumblr in the future and I get married, inshaAllah I will let you know haha and maybe reveal myself too lol. But for now, I'm gonna focus on myself and pray, pray, and pray and let's see what Allah has planned for me. Khair inshaAllah.
Salam <3
aw inshAllah that’s really cute of you haha, khayr!! @sseol the way she started to mention us both 🥹💗
imagine marrying someone you don’t vibe with, who will you laugh with till your stomach hurts? who will understand you in all ways? who will look at you and know how to act right? who will know your love language? ofc nobody is perfect, we all have our flaws but we have to find someone to complement these flaws with. everything happens for a reason and behind every obstacle there lies a deep wisdom we will find out later, if Allah wills!
i would love to hear from you and find out who is hidden behind the wonderfully worded texts, but only if you want to. big big ameen to your duas and thank you my dear! i also pray for the kind-hearted man you talked about, i hope he will find a spouse who brings him happiness. take care 💕

As’salam Alaikum sister, I am a sister myself and I have no friends besides my husband. As much as I love spending time with him he’s a man at the end of the day and I want a female friend I can share a bond with. Girl to girl connection. The problem is there are no sisters around me. The girls of my community do not have any relationship to God. They do not care about Islam and are types of people that I disagree with. Polytheism, gossip, big egos, and so on. I thought of going to masjids because I saw local masjid giving classes to sisters during Ramadan. But then I sort of realized that most Muslim girls today are not muwwahideens. They are liberal and have the “boss girl let’s go work independent” mentality. I’m not sure what to do… I will continue to keep making dua for righteous company. Please make dua for me. Thank you 🤍
وعليكم السلام ورحمه الله وبركاته اختي
I'm so sorry for the late response dearest sister. I understand your concern SubhanAllaah we women out of fitrah are social in nature we like company, we like to talk out about our emotions, feelings and gestures to someone of same gender. Your longing is valid I ask Allaah to grant a pious, Lord concious, loving, empathetic muwahida friend Ameen. In today's world it's difficult to find a true friend upon Tawheed sharing the same core fundamentals and values if you can't find someone around you remember there are tons of amazing sisters out here on social media and you can reach out to me InShaAllaah. We are sisters for the sake of Allaah 🤍 Keep making Dua Allaah will answer you surely and I promise I'll make Dua for you as well BarakAllaahu feeki 🖤
