31 Days of Horror Day 6: As Above So Below (2014)
One of the goals for this month is to watch some of the classics like Candyman (1992) and some of the really old classics like the original Dracula (1931). However, it seems as if I’m stuck in the 2010s. Because for Day 6, I watched As Above So Below (2014). The film is written by John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle and is directed by John Erick Dowdle. It stars Perdita Weeks (Scarlett), Ben…

sometimes revisiting the classics doesn't just mean watching the original halloween. spooky tuesday is a (now not so new!) podcast where we’re breaking down all of our favorite slashers, thrillers, monster movies and black comedies on the new scariest day of the week.
the thing about the 2014 film as above so below is that we're actually not smart enough to take it on on our own — so when we decided to cover it for the pod, we knew we had to invite a pal to join us. cue actual italian literature and apparent dante/virgil shipper manu!!! as we explore the catacombs and all nine circles of hell, she's helping us figure out what exactly happened, who's deserving and who's damned, and if this movie was just too smart for all the critics who declared it rotten.
give spooky tuesday a listen on apple podcasts, spotify, iheart radio, or stitcher

As Above So Below (2014)
A beautiful archeologist with a lot of off-the-shoulder sweater sets convinces her friend to go with her and a crew into the Paris catacombs to search for some lost artifact.
I basically watched this movie to see the catacombs again.  2014 was the first time the French government allowed filming down there.  It can’t be terribly safe or comfortable to film inside the catacombs since it feels confining and overwhelming to be down there at all.
It takes quite a while for anything to happen in this horror movie.  So if you are looking for quick action or some boobs - you won’t find them here.  But eventually, even though the crew decide to take the established route to get where they’re going, they still have trouble.  I’m guessing it was the singing monster women who led them astray but I may be grasping at straws.
The trope is very similar to The Descent.   A team goes underground and monsters pick them off one by one.  But there were a couple of good parts.  Like when the camera man got stuck.  And you get to see the actual catacombs.  Which is cool.

Netflix Has Another Borrowed Hit On Its Hands With ‘Waco’
Netflix has a unique power that it seems to be beginning to understand. It can take a halfway decent show, completely ignored on a more traditional TV Network, adopt it into its Netflix family, and then turn it into a hit by the simple fact that it exists on the service. That’s what we’re seeing with Waco, a series that aired on the Paramount Network back in 2018 that chronicles the real-life standoff at Waco between the government and David Koresh’s cult that killed 74 people. I had no idea what the Paramount Network was, and I had to do some research to discover that it’s actually what SpikeTV got turned into after it was killed, and CBS wants it to be a competitor with the likes of FX and AMC on cable. Well, I’m not sure that’s gone to plan, but one of its highest profile shows was meant to be Waco, which now is passing itself off as a Netflix production, if you didn’t know any better. Waco stars Friday Night Lights’ Taylor Kitsch as Koresh and has performances from a huge swath of other talented actors like Michael Shannon, Boardwalk Empire’s Shea Whigham, Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist and Ozark’s Julia Garner. It’s a stacked cast and intense historical topic that looks right at home on Netflix. But it’s not a Netflix show. And it aired in 2018. That has not stopped it from appearing in Netflix’s Top 10 list this week, where it currently sits at #5 on the overall list, and is the #2 drama series on the service behind only new Netflix original, Outer Banks. If you’re wondering when you’ve seen this happen before, it would be for You, the Lifetime serial killer series that ended up becoming a hit when it was ported over to Netflix, so much so that they actually bought it outright and it’s now an official Netflix original going forward, keeping its concept and lead in place. Waco is likely to be a different story given that A) it’s a miniseries and B) it’s based on an actual event so no, there is not going to be a Waco season 2 unless this becomes sort of cult-focused miniseries where we move on to Jonestown with a new cast next, or something like that. Waco is being praised for its stellar performances all across its cast, but I’m hearing a lot of good things about Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham specifically. It could be possible that if this does well enough on Netflix, they could recruit John and Drew Dowdle, who made the show, to craft something new for them, if they’re not locked into a deal with Paramount. I will likely be checking out Waco this week as the 245th show I have watched during quarantine. You may want to give it a shot as well.

Quarentena 2: Terminal (2011)
Quarantine 2: Terminal
Direção: John G. Pogue;
Roteiro: John G. Pogue; continuação baseada nas personagens e situações do filme Quarentena (2008), roteirizado por John Erick Dowdle e Drew Dowdle; que, por sua vez, é baseado no filme [REC] (2007), escrito por Jaume Balagueró, Luis A. Berdejo e Paco Plaza;
Gênero: Suspense; Terror;

The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) Movie Review
The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) Movie Review
Over the past decade, The Poughkeepsie Tapes has become an artifact of horror fandom lore. Initially set for a 2007 release, John Erick Dowdle’s mockumentary profiling of a serial killer was pulled from the release slate and faded away.  In 2014, the film received a light VOD release and vanished again.
On October 10, 2017, The Poughkeepsie Tapes was given, for the first time, a proper release.…
