Hello! What about ‘As Above So Below’ do you like so much? I was going to do a YouTube video on it but I realised I couldn’t really differentiate it from its peers. Thank you!
Oh! This is a fun one, I'm not sure how much help I'll be if you do decide to do a video on it as I'm bad at getting my thoughts out coherently, but I'll try!
So As Above So Below is first and foremost a found footage film, a very well made one in my opinion. From a technical standpoint, there isn't much to differentiate it from any other found footage film (The Blair Witch Project, Hell House LLC, The Houses October Built, etc.) besides the character Benji (Edwin Hodge).
Benji is making a documentary about Scarlet (Perdita Weeks) and her search for the philosopher's stone. Because of this, the director had an excuse for some more "cinematic" shots throughout the film while preserving the "found footage" aspect completely.
However, the historical aspects of the film are subjects that my lil goth/history loving heart holds dear. I'm fascinated by the catacombs and the history of alchemy. So this movie was kind of made for me and appealed to me more than it might the average person.
The other thing that I really enjoyed about this film was the very obvious but still really nicely shown parallels to Dante's Inferno and the implication that they are in what can be taken as literally hell, with the need to atone or make peace with their perceived sins (which I'll mention again in a minute), their travel downward through all the "circles" of hell as in the Inferno, and the obvious warning at the entrance (Abandon all hope, ye who enter here).
Now, the sins. This part may seem kind of, well, stupid. The only one who seems to have a legitimate sin that they need to atone for is Zed (Ali Marhyar), who has a child he's never seen. Scarlet's sin is that she wasn't there when her father needed her (she didn't answer the phone when he called the night he committed suicide), and George (Ben Feldman) got lost trying to get help for his brother who was trapped in a cave and drowned waiting for him. These don't really seem like sins deserving of hell on the surface, not answering the phone and being a scared kid who got lost, and I agree.
But when you think about it, it isn't about whether the sin is real, the guilt makes them believe the sin is real. Scarlet says it best, "as I believe the world to be, so it is." They damned themselves with their guilt. Overcoming that grants them redemption and a way out.
Okay I'm rambling too much now and I don't know if what I wrote makes sense but I hope so. I could go on and on about this movie if you let me, honestly.

2024 Horror Challenge: [49/?]
↳“As above, so below. As I believe the world to be, so it is.“ As Above, So Below (2014) dir. John Erick Dowdle
Plot: When a team of explorers venture into the catacombs that lie beneath the streets of Paris, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead.
Starring: Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman, Edwin Hodge, François Civil, Marion Lambert & Ali Marhyar
I've probably got about one more review left in me after this one with all this negativity from me tonight. I can't help it, it's the movies. lol Anyway, look at me finally venturing back into something that is at least 10 years old (I swear, I truly did not mean to stick to mostly 2024 releases this year idk how that happened that way) I've actually been really wanting to watch this one because it feels like I've seen the reaction to it being really mixed. I've seen it being praised as a solid found footage and others straight up trashing it as being totally overrated. I had to know where I stood. Also, I dug the vibe from the poster for it, despite it actually being rather simple. Overall, I do think it was somewhat average but I do think it was pretty cool that they filmed this in the actual Catacombs of Paris. Honestly, it was a good location to use for a spooky story so that's a definite positive. I do understand the criticisms for the movie though. Found footage is one of those subgenres where you're either all for it or you hate it, it seems like. I personally am here for it because when done right, it can make the audience feel like you're experiencing the horror along with the characters. I will say the camera felt extra shaky at certain parts so that was a choice. lol But otherwise, the style was effective here for me. The characters themselves could have been likeable/fleshed out since there is an interesting concept introduced once they get deep in the tunnels and hell kinda breaks loose but I don't know if they really wanted to expand on that at all or not anyway. But also, I've seen lots of hate for Perdita Weeks's Scarlet and well, I get it tbh. Her character is incredibly selfish and that does make her annoying since you're like ugh girl... But then, we wouldn't have a movie, would we? Gotta have that one character that makes horrible choices but then tries to right it by the end. The ending kinda ends a little with a whimper for me but the movie has its moments throughout I guess. Overall, it was just kinda okay. I did like seeing someone describe this movie as The Descent + National Treasure because that feels incredibly accurate but also again, I wouldn't say this movie ended up being as classic as those two movies so. But at least I finally watched it and it kinda met my expectations enough? Idk it was fine. I'm gonna stop being so negative. lol

sometimes revisiting the classics doesn't just mean watching the original halloween. spooky tuesday is a (now not so new!) podcast where we’re breaking down all of our favorite slashers, thrillers, monster movies and black comedies on the new scariest day of the week.
the thing about the 2014 film as above so below is that we're actually not smart enough to take it on on our own — so when we decided to cover it for the pod, we knew we had to invite a pal to join us. cue actual italian literature and apparent dante/virgil shipper manu!!! as we explore the catacombs and all nine circles of hell, she's helping us figure out what exactly happened, who's deserving and who's damned, and if this movie was just too smart for all the critics who declared it rotten.
give spooky tuesday a listen on apple podcasts, spotify, iheart radio, or stitcher
