should you fight ___?, my (main) paras edition
Wainwright: This man could hold his own against a powerful psionic entity even back when he wasn’t immortal (with only a gun and his wits, btw). Seriously, do not, unless you want to be absolutely shredded by a flying, shotgun-wielding, knife-throwing wisp of living smoke.
Soren: He’s bad at gunfights, but extremely skilled with a sword and bow. Don’t fight him unless you can somehow translate Minecraft PVP skill to real life. Did I mention he still has his Command Block?
Fiddleford: Physically? You could, he’s but a noodle. Emotionally? Imagine the toll. Mentally? Say hello to amnesia.
Alistair: You’re going to beat up a nice gay trans man? Really? Well, prepare to die I guess. Just like Winny this one’s been a badass even before his Favorite times. Have fun fighting a literal light. (That has a sniper rifle.)
Simon: Similar to Fiddleford (why the hell would you want to fight him), except this one’s more a glass cannon type. Do not fight if you don’t have some kind of pyrokinesis.
Gaster: One word: no. They can straight up annihilate things. You wouldn’t fight a black hole.
Stanford: Fight at your own risk. He’s skilled against the supernatural and kind of a badass since that dimension hopping thing, but in a psychic/astral battle you could beat him extremely easily (unless you’re a dream demon).
Newton: He’s part puppet and part lightbulb, you could beat him with an oversized nail (an enchanted oversized nail. That being said, why the hell would you want to fight him?
Conductor: Xe’s a time traveller. You already lost.
Archibald: He’s a seasoned mercenary with psionic powers. Fight him only if you want a challenge, and I mean hardcore challenge. Even if you get something to counter his powers, he still has a lot of energy weapons.
Lowe: Same as Archibald, except the psionics are replaced with advanced cybernetics. He’s also much more skilled, so if you want to fight him, prepare beforehand.
Patricia: I don’t know why would you want to fight her, but unless you’re a magical-girl-verse villain or blessed by the Sun himself, you don’t stand much of a chance.
Pascal: Three words: mad aetheric science. You probably shouldn’t.
Brad: He has super strength and durability, but he’s also very, VERY aggressive and mentally finicky. Fight him if you have a deathwish, or if you have the deconstructed supervillain power to counter his deconstructed superhero power.
Noer: He’s a honorbound warrior who wants to fight, but specifically the strongest person ever. If you try to fight him, he’ll probably just run away from you instead.
Phoe: Depends on which Phoe we’re talking about... but in her current semi-ghost form, you can and should fight her, she’s but a powerless little shit.
Esther: Same as above, she’s a semi-ghost now. I don’t think you should fight her, though. She deserves a break.
Timekeeper, Spaceowner: They’re all powerful meta-deities. Do not.
Sunweld, Moonward: They’re all powerful meta-deities, but I/parame personally hate/s them and it is possible to beat them up if you’re also some kind of deity (and you have allies), soooooo...
Bill: Yes. Fuck yes. He’s in Rembrance (jail for cosmic villains), I/parame weakened him during the battle with Phoe, and everyone hates him. I would gladly film him getting beat the fuck up.
Ren: Outside of Warrennuchi only. He’s the Admin, dammit.
Avery: Same as Ren, except you’re in only slightly less danger outside of Warrennuchi. She has purified demon magic under her belt and will NOT hesitate to delete you with it.
Nikolai: I/Ey legally can’t lose. Sorry.
Hypno: He also legally can’t lose, but for different reasons. You know how the Joker can’t technically die? He has that, but more... tangible. That being said, I would pay to see him be humiliated. Just bring some mind control protection and dodge his sawblades.

So I wrote this short thing about some childhood memories that were haunting me the last week or so, in hopes that writing it out would make them go away. I thought I might share.
I might be the only person alive who remembers the time my Grandma tried to start a family musical tradition. The only people present for the occasion: myself, my Grandma (who’s been dead for six years and who had a failing memory for much longer than that), and my younger cousin who couldn’t have been older than four or five at the time.
I remember it being fall, after school had started but before anyone had started preparing their halloween costumes. Most days the sun still felt as warm as summer in the afternoon but the light had that nostalgic orange glow that it only has in the last third of the year. I think I was spending the night at my Grandma’s house. My cousin was also there, her mom and my dad are siblings. The house was a small, older home, but it was new to my family. My Grandma had sold the stately two story home that my dad and aunt grew up in maybe two years prior, after my grandpa was killed suddenly in a car accident.
I didn’t know this Grandma as well as I knew my mother’s mother (my Granny, I called her) but I wanted to know her, and for her to be proud of me. I think a lot of it was due to my cousin and I both having her in common, and both of us being the only children our ages in the family. My cousin has a much older half-brother, and eventually I had another, much younger cousin on my mom’s side of the family, but at the time, Rachel was one of the only people in my life with whom I shared such a strong, almost sibling bond.
Anyway, I don’t remember much about anything else we might have done that night. I don’t know if we played a boardgame or with any of our toys. I can’t remember what we had for dinner, or if we even ate dinner at Grandma’s at all. However, I do remember Grandma suddenly corralling my cousin and I into her room, her voice more cheerful and excited than I ever remember hearing it either before or since.
“I want the two of you to rehearse those Christmas carols, so you can sing in front of the rest of the family this year.” I remember her saying. The way she worded things, it sounded like there had been previous rehearsals, but if any happened I have no memory of them. Her voice was low in volume, but almost shaking with excitement, like someone sharing a secret, even though in my memory, the three of us were the only ones home. “Let’s start with ‘Away in a Manger’ both of you know that one and it’s not too challenging to sing.”
I did know the song, my other grandmother and mother insisted we to go to church regularly, and while I found most of it boring, I did enjoy the singing more than most things. I shared a glance with my cousin, she was still shorter than me at the time, being younger, and her big innocent eyes and unkempt curled short hair made her seem a bit like the proverbial deer in the headlights. She didn’t know the song. Or at least, she didn’t know the song well enough to sing it by heart on demand.
“Okay, so this one will sound amazing if you two can pull off this two part harmony.” Grandma continued, not registering our panicked exchange as she relayed her master plan. “Rachel, I think you should sing alto since you play piano and have a better ear for music.” My young cousin had been enrolled in piano lessons some time ago. “Melissa,” she continued, using my birth name,”I want you to sing soprano because I think you could at least get the melody right, and hit those high notes.”
I remember my pride stinging at the thought that my cousin, two whole years younger than me, might already be better than me at something. Another part of me felt that uncomfortable ants on chalkboard feeling of wrongness when my grandma pointed out my femininity as my main talent to contribute to this family talent show.
But. Stronger than any of those negative emotions, I felt that urge to do something to make her proud, and that soul deep yearning to be a part of my family’s tradition. We didn’t have too many that I knew of, not like some of my classmates who made grand journeys packed in a car with their many siblings to visit heroic and kind grandparents in exotic and faraway places like New York and Tennessee. Maybe we didn’t yet but this yearly family talent show! It was going to change all of that!
My grandma pointed to a piece of paper in her hand. I can’t remember if it was actually sheet music, or simply the lyrics to the song hand-written on a piece of notebook paper, but she looked from the paper to us with all the poise of the conductor at a grand symphony. “Okay, let’s begin at this tempo, on three.” She nodded, assured that my cousin and I understood her instructions.
She counted up to three, my heart was pounding, this was my chance! “Away in a manger, no crib for a bed!” I belted, pouring all the emotion of every 80s power ballad I’d ever heard into my voice. Rachel joined in, a bit quieter, but trying her best to keep up despite learning or remembering the song as we went, her younger voice in unison with mine. I thought we sounded great! With some practice our parents wouldn’t know what had hit them.
“NO NO NO” my grandma stopped us. “Did you not hear what I said??? Rachel, you’re supposed to sing the alto part. And you aren’t enunciating! I can barely hear what words you’re singing.” She looked at me, “And Melissa, your voice isn’t sweet and light enough, you aren’t getting the emotions we need for the piece.”
“sorry.” Rachel mumbled softly.
“Um, Grandma, How does the… alto... part go?” I asked, trying to help my cousin out, and keep my new dream of our family talent show. “I thought we sounded great.” I added.
“If you’re both singing the same notes, how will anyone tell it apart? Especially with you, Melissa, wailing like a sick cat.” She asked, rhetorically.  “Now Rachel you need to start the song on Do, just like you’re learning in piano lessons” she sang the note, “and Melissa, you need to start on a higher note than you did! On So.” she demonstrated, singing do-re-mi-fa-so.
My mind was reeling. I had no idea that music had so many layers!
“Now, let’s try again.” Grandma said, her tone of voice indicating that she was showing us an abundance of patience with this second chance. Rachel and I glanced at each other, Rachel just shrugged at me. Having spent more of her time with Grandma, she might have been more used to Grandma’s oddities, but I felt dread building deep in my stomach, as I could since my dream barely formed, and yet already fading.
“AWAY IN A MANGER” my cousin and I started again, each picking a random starting note, and repeating the opening verse with even more feeling, which every child knows is expressed by increasing the volume.
“UGH! YOU TWO ARE HOPELESS!” Grandma interrupted again. Her old hands clenched into fists, crumpling up the piece of paper with the key to our star act and tossing it to the floor.
I can’t remember all the details of what happened next.
I remember bursting into tears, of course. I can’t remember if my cousin also cried or not, but I know she hugged me. Grandma might have stayed, or simply left the room to think up a better idea for Christmas in her new house.
----
An older memory flashed bright and vivid in my mind. I was even younger, perhaps Rachel’s age four or even three.
I was in the basement of my parents’ first house. Well, it wasn’t exactly a basement. The side of the room on the front of the house was a bit below ground, but on the back side of the house it had a large sliding glass door. I loved that room. It had plush shag carpet on one side and a big fireplace with a wood stove, and the other side had cool linoleum flooring and my dad’s bar where he kept an extensive collection of beer cans. I couldn’t remember not feeling at home there.
My dad had this guitar. It had a dark chocolate wood finish. The strings made the most beautiful, complex sounds I’d ever heard. I’d found the guitar lying unattended on the light blue carpet and had leaned over to strum the strings. My fingers were very small, and I didn’t know anything about how to play a guitar. So I simply plucked the strings one at a time, and then plucked multiples at once and then all six in quick succession. It wasn’t any song I knew, but just hearing the sounds from the strings vibrating warmly inside the wood gave me this feeling of magic being present and real in my life that I’ve only rarely recaptured. And then…
“You’re doing it wrong.”
Suddenly my father was behind me. Sometimes he was my dad, but the way he was carrying himself, I knew in an instinctual way, it was different. “That’s not how you play a guitar. Stop that.” He yanked his guitar away from me. I remember how small the neck of the guitar looked in his hands compared to mine. Fragile.
“See, you put your fingers of your left hand on the neck, like this.” He shaped his fingers in a funny way. “Then you only PLUCK the strings with your RIGHT hand, like THIS.” he continued, speaking to me as though I was particularly dumb for not already knowing. He ran his hand across the opening in the guitar’s wood. He was gripping the strings in his left hand tightly, and one of the strings made a wooden burring noise when he plucked it. I wondered if the guitar was nervous too.
“FUCK IT, I CAN’T EVEN DO THIS RIGHT ANYMORE. WHAT THE FUCK??” He roared.
I cowered between the coffee table and the couch, from the monster wearing my dad’s face. His reddened blue eyes fell on me, “Why are you hiding over there, are you embarrassed that your dad can’t even play a simple chord?”
I shook my head frantically, NO. I would say whatever he wanted me to.
His eyes took on an even more sinister glint, “Well, I’ll make sure you won’t laugh at me again!”
He threw open the sliding glass door, the glass shaking in its tracks from the excessive force. It was dark outside, and in my memory it was cold, although I’m not sure if it really was, or if I was just shivering.
I saw him raise the guitar above his head, and like it was a scene from a scary movie, I hid my face in the cushions of the couch, peeking now and then and flinching at the sounds of my father bashing his guitar to death against the stones of our small patio that I’d previously associated only with the smells of charcoal and grilling hot dogs.
I remember my mother appearing and yelling at my father for his “childish behavior” and “scaring me” but even though I was happy she might be able to stop the monster, I was still crying because she didn’t have any words of sympathy for the guitar whose strings’ dying music vibrated with pain in the night air.
Then I was back on Grandma’s bed. Rachel was hugging me fiercely, acting the part of the older sister despite her young age, as I told her about the monster. About how I still visited the guitar’s grave, where slowly rotting wooden pieces and gnarled rusted strings were tossed without care into a small heap behind the firewood, with only a light dusting of dried oak leaves to keep it warm at night.
I can’t remember my parents ever taking me to visit my Grandpa’s grave. To this day, I don’t know where he is buried.
“It will be okay!” I remember Rachel saying, offering promises she couldn’t keep in an effort to comfort me, “You can get your own guitar! We’ll keep it here, and I’ll make sure you can get some guitar music so you can learn to play!”
I nodded, hugging her back, but knowing even then that my young cousin didn’t have the power to make her promises a reality. We went into my cousin’s room and I curled into the fetal position on her bed, while my cousin frantically made intricate diagrams of what she imagined guitar music might look like. I remember it looking remarkably similar to the guitar tablature format used by today’s online guitar chord archives, but with more lines and with various shapes of musical notes drawn onto the many strings in her favorite crayon colors.
It was dark outside when my angry father burst into Grandma’s home, something about me telling lies and ruining his and my mother’s night. My mother was there behind him, her lips shut, pulled into a tight frown as she glared between me and my father, upset with the both of us for causing an embarrassing scene. I can’t remember if my aunt was there, or if my Grandma was actually present to hand me off to my parents. I do remember that only Rachel showed any sympathy for my sudden emotions. “It will be okay!” She promised, squeezing my hand before my mother pulled me away into the night, my slightly chubby wrist gripped too tightly in her bony fingers.
My father drove us home. I kept the side of my forehead pressed against the cool rear window of the car as he steered us back to the house. I watched the moon as my parents’ scolded me and each other for snitching about personal family business with others, nevermind if Grandma and Rachel were also family as far as I understood. I tried to remember that feeling I had when I first found the guitar, or when Grandma offered my cousin and I our one chance at Christmas living-room stardom, and wondered if I would ever feel safe and at home like that again.

USA: Matt Mitchell's A Pouting Grimace & Jen Shyu's Song of Silver Geese Available Now/Pi Recordings 2017
Pi Recordings is pleased to announce the release of its final recordings for 2017. Please visit our website to order.
Matt Mitchell's A Pouting Grimace & Jen Shyu's Song of Silver Geese Available Now
A Pouting Grimace is the audacious new release from pianist/composer Matt Mitchell, whose prior release Vista Accumulation (Pi 2015) The New York Times calls “a bold signature” that “simmers with deep intensity.” Not only is he one of the most in-demand pianists in jazz – Mitchell plays in bands such as Tim Berne’s Snakeoil, Steve Coleman’s Natal Eclipse, the Dave Douglas Quintet, John Hollenbeck’s Large Ensemble, Jonathan Finlayson’s Sicilian Defense, Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Birdcalls, and David Binney’s Quartet -- he has established himself as a composer of bold distinction. Substantial in scope, the album, which features twelve musicians: five woodwinds, four percussionists, harp, bass, and the leader on piano, Prophet 6, and electronics, weaves an intricate web of off-kilter rhythms and logical frenzy. Produced by the acclaimed guitarist/composer David Torn, the work is completely beyond genre, a daring tour de force that headily mines the interstice between precision-plotted compositions and the thrill of improvisation.
Highly regarded among the jazz cognoscenti, Mitchell is a first-call for musicians seeking a pianist able to deal with the most demandingly complex material. He is a charter member of saxophonist Tim Berne’s Snakeoil, who just released their fourth album, Incidentals, and Mitchell also interpreted Berne’s compositions on FØRAGE, released earlier in 2017. He also appears on Morphogenesis (Pi 2017), the latest from saxophonist Steve Coleman, who said of Mitchell: “Matt possesses a technical command of his instrument and ear for tonal resources that only a few keyboardists in New York have. I appreciate his open and creative attitude towards music, which he never approaches in terms of categories or styles. He’s a great example of the 21st-Century musician: versed in the musical lessons of the past, present, and poised to help move the development of this music forward.” Percussionist Dan Weiss, who played on Vista Accumulation and has worked extensively with Mitchell said: “He is a rare breed of musician in that he has no leaks. His improvising is true and creative, his composing is innovative, his technique is astounding.”
The intrepid new release takes Mitchell’s music to a whole other level, featuring ensemble pieces that burst with intricate detail interwoven with solo electronic interludes. The idea was borne out of his desire to try composing music with a fresh instrumental palette, one heavy on the convoluted interlocution between the various woodwinds and percussion. Each of the group compositions is derived from a kernel of an idea – listen carefully and you can probably figure it out. While entirely plotted out, the compositions leaves room for frequent and varied layers of improvisation, all in service of the overall arrangements. Dan Weiss says of the project: “This music is very important to the lineage of composed/ improvised music. The orchestral palette, harmonic nuance, rhythmic precision and complexity, and hauntingly beautiful textured melodies make this recording highly innovative and unlike anything we've have heard before.”
Producer Torn describes his experience: “As the project proceeded, there grew out of all-that an increasingly strong undercurrent and vivid sense of wonder, dread and simple excitement in me, even, eventually... awe: awe, in light of both Matt's clear vision actually getting birthed into this world and our real adventure with its passage. What a remarkably rich piece of work this is, from a truly remarkable man, bending music, sound and time -- so gorgeously and so necessarily idiosyncratically -- in order to speak and feel true and affect thusly, as he must certainly gotta do."
Musicians, instrumentation and exegesis in Mitchells own words:
1.     bulb terminus [1:11]: Mitchell (electronics) - thrust into a dream like state, an encoded prequel to the main event which is its own curious event/environment, you think you’re stuck then you’re whisked away
2.     plate shapes [8:12]: : Mitchell (piano, Prophet 6); Cass (bass); Gentile (drums, percussion); Smith (vibraphone); Brennan (marimba); Irabagon (sopranino sax); Schoenbeck (bassoon) -- exploration of varying momentums within a fixed grid, repetition breeds semi-familiarity, entire paragraphs uttered simultaneously, mutating mantras
3.     mini alternate [5:32]: Mitchell (piano); Cass (bass); Gentile (drums, percussion); Smith (tanbou, glockenspiel); Robinson (bass sax); Kono (oboe); Weiss (tabla) --a slice from brim, inverted and gridlocked, the illusion of forward motion really coming from circular motion, attempts to rescue ultimately fall back into the centripetal motion, concluding with a zoom in or out
4.     brim [6:50]: Mitchell (piano); Cass (bass); Gentile (drums, percussion); Brennan (vibraphone); Smith (bongos, glockenspiel, timpani); Weiss (tabla); Andrews (harp); Webber (flute); Kono (oboe); Irabagon (soprano sax); Schoenbeck (bassoon); Robinson (contrabass clarinet); Sorey (conductor) -- the primordial genetic broth of the whole record, everything on all other tracks generated from the material here. associations with multiple definitions of brim intended; margins and the sense of overflowing; palimpsest, chant, kaleidoscope
5.     deal sweeteners [1:27]: Mitchell (electronics) -- an electronic brim-based bonus gloss to close out the first half, an attempt to explain that fails to explain
6.     squalid ink [0:15]: Mitchell (electronics) -- half remembering what came before and  presaging what is to come in a jumbled last gasp of the old guard
7.     gluts [4:28]: Mitchell (piano); Cass (bass); Gentile (drums, percussion); Webber (alto flute); Schoenbeck (bassoon); Andrews (harp) -- a ballad, an attempt to lovingly massage an unusual density of information into lyrical spaces…two trios eventually coming together, false starts/false endings
8.     heft [4:16]: Mitchell (piano, Prophet 6); Cass (bass); Gentile (drums, percussion); Robinson (bass sax); Irabagon (sopranino sax) -- a foreboding processional, an ill-meaning weight, a portent coming to pass, a quizzical aftermath
9.     sick fields [9:11]: Mitchell (piano); Cass (bass); Gentile (drums, percussion); Brennan (marimba); Smith (percussion, timpani); Weiss (table); Andrews (harp); Webber (bass flute); Kono (English horn); Robinson (contrabass clarinet); Sorey (conductor) -- inexorable and inscrutable, a severely fragmented space containing broken mis-remembrances of what has come, failed attempts to find solace, dissipation, evaporation, more false starts, resignation
10.  ooze interim [5:07]: Mitchell (electronics) -- a zero gravity reminiscence of the final moments, mutated thought loops overlapping nonsensically temporarily to infinity

Q&A: How Dermot Kennedy Strikes A Balance Between Bon Iver & Drake In ‘Doves and Ravens’
Tumblr media
Just like the rest of us, Dermot Kennedy strives for a healthy balance in life, love, and music--but he does so in a very different way. The Irish singer/songwriter strikes an utterly captivating equilibrium by thoughtfully merging two absolute extremes, both sonically and lyrically. It is a profound talent that has fueled his journey from his self-titled debut album to his upcoming Coachella 2019 performance, and this journey is one we are fortunate enough to have watched unfold before our very eyes.
Kennedy encapsulates notions of love and heartbreak, bliss and sorrow, life and death, and other fiercely opposing forces--often juxtaposing the two from one line to the next. Hence, his debut EP was properly titled Doves and Ravens, featuring the standout track “Glory,” in which Kennedy brilliantly proclaims he’s learned that “doves and raves fly the same.” While his lyrics maintain the depth of a poet and the composition of a seasoned singer/songwriter, Kennedy’s true flair comes in with the addition of unexpectedly urban-leaning production. The contrast between impassioned vocals, stripped back guitar chords, and hip hop beats allows for a highly universal appeal, and that appeal has certainly manifested itself in millions of monthly Spotify plays.
Following two sold-out headline shows in Los Angeles and New York City, we chatted with Dermot Kennedy about his emergence as a solo artist, the creative process behind Doves and Ravens, and his ultimate goal as an artist.
youtube
OTW: Let’s get started! Does your name have any special meaning?
DK: It means “free man.” It’s an Irish name.
OTW: Cool! Do you resonate with it?
DK: Yeah, for sure. My mother was very aware of what it meant--there’s some big story about how Dermot fought and died trying to save some woman. That’s terrible knowledge of what it means, but the name Dermot means “free man” essentially, which I really enjoy.
OTW: Back to the early days, was there a specific moment when you realized music is it? What drew you into it?
DK: What drew me into it was when I was ten years year old. My cousin played guitar at a party, and he was very good, so I got a guitar and started playing. That was the very beginning. I started to fall in love with music by David Gray, Glen Hansard, songwriters, and it grew from there. Playing football was just as important to me. I was a kid thinking I was going to be a footballer until I was 14 years old, and then you realize you actually have to be very good to do that.
It wasn’t like, “I need music in my life and this is what I am going to do definitely.” I think that happened when I left school, which was when I was 17 years old--I realized I definitely was going to do it. We have a thing at home called CAO, which is the form you fill out with your intentions for college and what courses you are applying for and my mother did it for me, because I had no intention of doing anything college-wise. I just wanted to write songs and move forward in that way. I put one course on it and it was a classical music degree. Then it’s swiveled down to an exam and then after the exam swiveled down to an audition. Only 20 people get in...I got in but it was the only course I put down on the form! I’m glad I did it, but I was not the one who made me do it.
Tumblr media
OTW: After college, what steps did you take to get started?
DK: Well the class turned out to be super classical and the people there wanted to be conductors and composers. So two of us started playing music together and formed a band while I was in college. Before college, I was doing things under my own name, doing gigs, releasing music, and we started playing together in college and it got weird, because we were nineteen/twenty, and it was my name on the poster, and we were all really good friends. The wheels were already in motion in that way. When I left college, in 2012, I kept doing it. Two years ago, the band split up and I’ve been doing my own thing since.
OTW: I read about how you had an encounter with Glen Hansard on the street...
DK: It was over the course of a couple years. He organizes this big busk at home every Christmas Eve. Bono’s played it. Glen’s the leader of it, and he’s an incredible person. He’ll be on the street for five hours on Christmas Eve just playing songs. Everyone comes together for that, and our main street is just rammed with people, because now it’s the thing that everyone knows about.
One of the first years I went into town, and basically a ton of people show up with guitars because they know it’s a thing and no one is going to stop you--and I was one of them. But he was a hero of mine so I was crazy determined to play with him and just spend time with him. We played a song together, this Bob Dylan song called “You Ain’t Going Nowhere,” and he played the first verse and I knew it because I learned his version of it, then he turned to me to play the second verse, and that was like a dream moment. And so I played it and that day just went on. We played music for a few hours. There were about 20 of us, but in every photo it’s me besides Glen, with my guitar, glued to him. I was like a leech to Glen Hansard that day.
And then a friend bumped into him at a venue in town a couple years later, and he remembered me. So he gave his number to my friend and said, “Tell him to give me a shout,” so we could talk or hang out. I was recording at the time so I wanted to invite him down to the studio to listen to what we were doing, and he couldn’t make it because he was on tour. We went back and forth over the course of two or three years. Finally he was like, “We’re doing a gig in Vicar Street,” which is quite a big venue, 1500 people I think, and he said, “Do you want to jump up on the stage and play during the gig?” So I played a song with his band. He’s a really special person and so that was really special, that moment.
OTW: What did you sing?
DK: I sang “After Rain.” It was funny because even when I showed up on the day and the band was like, “do you want us to play?” I was like, “we haven’t practiced or anything, but let’s give it a go.”
youtube
OTW: What happened after that?
DK: Afterwards I was talking to Glen about how good it is that he gives people that opportunity and he was really passionate about it. He said, “the moment you think your name being on the poster and it being your thing is important, you’ve lost it all. It’s so much bigger than it being your show ever.”
OTW: Wow, what words of wisdom.
DK: Yeah, he’s a good friend.
OTW: So your most recent EP was Doves & Ravens. What’s the explanation behind the name?
DK: It’s not super complex. It was a line in one of the songs, “Glory,” and I often find it hard to pin a song under one thing, and it can alternative from verse to verse or even line to line. For me, there was some good and some bad in my life that took place, and I definitely drew on both for the songs. Sometimes I find, personally, there might not be a ton of consistency in terms of the idea because it jumps back and forth. It gives it a nice balance in terms of the light and shade, and in terms of good and bad. Even in the production, with it being pretty songwriting thing versus this weird urban production, that’s happening now. “Doves & Ravens” was a good representation of that idea to me.
OTW: So you said good and bad, but what is it that’s bad and good?
DK: To start with the bad, I just lost someone really close to me, someone passed away. Not to get too detailed, but it was someone who was close not just to me, but my family. So that was really bad. Then in the midst of that, not long after, I fell in love, very much fell in love. So that was a nice balance.
OTW: This EP is the first time you introduced urban and hip-hop elements--what inspired that contrast?
DK: I was talking to someone about it recently, and they were saying the hip-hop world is the happening thing right now. Like Kanye West says, “rap is the new rock n’ roll.” And for me those guys are the most creative, most exciting, and the most shocking at times, but at least they are being interesting. That’s what I listen to a vast majority of the time.
OTW: Who do you like?
DK: It started with Drake. I’m not ashamed to say that. It’s so good sometimes. I went to see him in Dublin recently, and songs like “Tuscan Leather” and “Worst Behavior” have really strong lyrical character--that’s why I think he is incredible.
I went into the studio with Kerry, who I work with in London--he’s like my guy. He’s really tuned in musically and he played me this X Ambassadors song called “Love Songs Drug Songs,” and it basically mixed guitars with heavy beats. I just thought it was a really cool sound. So we kind of worked off that.
I played him an acoustic I had written--“A Closeness” from the EP. We put this beat on it, and it was so exciting when it happened to mix a raw guitar sound with that. We continued to do the same thing in “Glory” and the other ones. I’m glad I did, and if I’ve done my job correctly, then the acoustic side of things hasn’t been lost, and the songwriting hasn’t been deterred by this production. That’s what I’m trying to do. Have the music be great and build a good track, and also not lose why I started music in the first place.
youtube
OTW: Who are some Ones To Watch artists on your list?
DK: There’s a guy that I think is really great called Ciaran Lavery from Northern Ireland. He is a songwriter in its truest form. He just has a guitar and plays the keys sometimes and writes these really beautiful songs. He’s probably number one for me.
There’s another guy from Dublin called Eden. I remember a couple years ago, he tweeted a video of mine, and it turned out he was from Dublin, and I was like, “who is this person?” There’s tons of good music in Dublin, but a lot of it is quite contained in Dublin. So I was seeing this guy with this outrageous following, and I thought how come I had never heard of him before. I went to go see his show in Dublin, and he came to see mine. He’s a very talented man.
I could go on about bands in Dublin. There’s a band called Overhead, The Albatross. They are the one act from Ireland that I would make sure to see every time. They’re an instrumental band. The energy is very cool.
OTW: So what have you been up to recently?
DK: The first show in LA was a headline thing and it sold out, which is amazing. Then Bonnaroo, came back to play School Night, and headed to New York for another sold out how. Couple of festivals for the next couple months and then going to go from there.
It’s time to start thinking of an album for me, which is super exciting because I’ve got the songs, but I want to be in a scenario where I have space to do the best thing I can.
And we’ll do more shows because the London one was the best one, sold out real fast and it was about 400 people. Spotify is going crazy well, but until you do shows, you don’t really know if those people are people who are hearing it are people who are going to turn out for you at the gates. We don’t really know how far we can push it.

OTW: Do you think it all started from Spotify?
DK: Yeah. In April of 2016, Spotify started playlisting, and it went from getting 10 plays a day to whatever it gets now.
OTW: What would you say is your ultimate goal as an artist?
DK: I’d find it hard to restrict it to one thing. To have a song used in a major movie would certainly be a “pinch yourself” moment. To be less specific about what it is, I think ultimate goal is to make music that is respected by everyone, to be “successful,” but not lose the respect of the super talented musicians I went to college with.
OTW: So not a sell-out?
DK: Exactly! But I don’t see that as potentially hindering things either. I want to do both--make stuff that is respected by music purists, but I also want to go do amazing things. I think both is possible.
You could go to a Bon Iver or Frank Ocean show, and the people are dying to see that person, and not necessarily the person, but to hear their music and form a connection is really special. I’m starting to feel it, like London with all those people there, and it felt weird. The words you wrote to mean things to these people, and to be packed into that room together, is so special.

In the Old Testament there are many verses that speak of music. In this verse we find the terms singers and chief conductor of the chanters 1 Chronicles
15:27
-28. In the New Testament I found only this verse: They sang the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, "Thy works are great and extraordinary, Lord God Almighty! Thy ways are righteous and true, King of nations! Revelation 15: 3. This verse does not refer to a group of musics as you said in the video but to a group of people. I think there are good things to keep from the Old Testament. Today we are still talking about Moses, David ... as well as some miracles that happened before Jesus Christ. C 'Is a good topic to ponder. Thanks for the video.Show lessReply 3  View all 4 replies

Yes; I am well but what Brother George denounces under the inspiration of the Spirit spirit, bands and chorales who dream of being a star to impress the whole world; And more serious those who market them, yet God gave them for free. An example among us the Church the young people to whom God has the grace to know how to play an instrument, all ask that one pays them a sum, at any moment and when they refuse they leave elsewhere, what you think Of that brother Frederick. And today full of young girls and boys release albums without even being converted by what for them Christian music walksShow lessReply 1

I give glory to GOD that in my assembly our cults take place in a basement, based on 1Cor 14 vs 26. Guiding by the HOLY SPIRIT, without programming or repetition, in turn each other without complex, we rise According to inspiration in simplicity. Brother George Really God bless you. The Holy Spirit is one. I received this revelation of how to praise God which unfortunately is not taken into account in our churches. It is mainly dance and music inspired by the world. God bless you and continue to denounce all frauds in our present Churches.Reply 2

“Ehh..... No..... I’m not a fairy.... I’m a Train Conductor.” She replied; looking at the giant person and not expecting the pat on the head. “More specifically, I’m Milky Way Cookie and a cookie.”

To be called by the Slumbering Moon, herself, was rather nerve wrecking as there could be numerous of reason why she was calling the train conductor in the first place, however no matter what; the cookie would answer the call as she knew it was important to answer it.
... As well that if the Slumbering Moon really wanted to; she could easily hijack the train and make the train deliver the cookie to herself even if Milky Way didn’t want to answer, thus it save time; she arrived at the location where Moonlight Cookie was.
