All the Myths of Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Busted!

History of Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) or Network Marketing is a fast-growing phenomenon. Anyone, anywhere can become a distributor and earn an income from building the network without having to sacrifice any other occupation. No additional investment into this business is required. That makes it very attractive for people from all walks of life. They attempt to join the network. It is estimated that in the US alone over 70 percent of the Direct Selling Revenues come from MLM. Worldwide, about 50 million people ate connected to MLM. There is no documented history of MLM. People reckon that this started with ‘Nutralite’ or formerly known as California Vitamin Company which produced food supplements. In the early 1940s, the Company used Direct Selling. Distributors discovered that they were generating more sales for the Company by referring their friends and known people to the business opportunity available with Nutralite. There was no system in place to recognize and reward the distributors for recruiting other distributors for the business. The system of paying 2 percent bonus to the sponsoring distributor on the sales that were achieved by the distributor and the network that he sponsored or built was presented. This was the start of modern-day ‘Pyramid Selling.’ Nutralite achieved extraordinary growth and profits in the following decades. All this was due to a fast-growing network not only in the US but across other continents too. In the early 1960s, Richard DeVos and Jay Van Andel, who were the Distributors of Nutralite broke away to build their own company. It grew to become the MLM business ever called ‘Amway’. It started with household and cleaning products and went on to buy Nutralite Company. It merged the food supplement products into its portfolio. A distributor named Dr. Forrest C Shaklee too broke away from Nutralite at the same period that ‘Amway’ was born. He founded the new Company named Shaklee dealing with natural sunshine products. Currently, hundreds of businesses practice Pyramid selling or MLM. Many brands such as Avon, Tupperware, Electrolux, Discovery Toys, Herbal Life, Kleenex, Oriflamme, Reliv, etc. have been growing their business globally using this notion of sales. Though there are a lot of criticisms and charges levied against this system. The real figures tell us that the concept has been successful in the growth of more businesses in recent years. The Direct Selling Association of the US reported that about 25 % of its members engaged in MLM in the 1990s. In 2009, it was found that over 94% of the members had been practicing this method. This contributed to about 97% of the total Direct Sales. The figures show progressive trends. Companies often promote testimonials from people who have become millionaires in the business. Many governments have raised questions about the authenticity of the pyramid compensation method. They think that it is a faulty model. The income generation does not happen due to sales of the product. It is because of the recruitment of distributors. In China, this has been banned since 1998. The trade is growing unprecedentedly all over the rest of the world. Is MLM an Opportunity for Anyone and Everyone? Everywhere you go, you are bound to find someone connected to a network of MLM. Lon-lost friends will call you to rekindle that old relationship, just for the sake of the network. Housewives, students, professionals, bankers, teachers, and retired persons do a lot of Pyramid Selling or MLM. For people who do not know, this concept might be puzzling as well as interesting. The marketers just want to sit with you, so that they can explain the concept, and are able to entice you to join the network somehow. It does not matter if you are a student or a retired person. MLM is bound to work for you. Many people join the network, for a lot of reasons. MLM is for Anyone and Everyone Anyone can join the network. Age, qualification, profession, and experience are no barriers. There are people with no business history or financial support having made their millions with MLM. They have not had any education or financial backup. It is sheer persistence and consistency that helped them reach dizzying heights. Many special and disabled people have found MLM an easier method to become self-sufficient and self-reliant. This method gives a common man a chance to dream, and become a millionaire. There is no ceiling to your earning. You earn as much as you perform. There are real-world cases of people who made millions with MLM. This shows that your goals are doable. No Investment Business When someone tells you that there is a business that can be done without any investment, the returns are immediate, you will most probably not believe him.  There is inventory to keep, no space to retain, no shop to sell, nothing at all is required. You do not have to give up on your job or career. The potential to earn is unlimited. No Risk Business People are averse to taking risks. MLM is virtually risk-free. No financial investment is needed. In most of the business models, you don’t need to hold inventories or products. If you choose to do so, the business would buy back in case you cannot sell. The only expense is a small fee for a starter kit. This way, you can build a risk-free business on your imagination and sheer hard work. MLM attracts all sorts of people, from all walks of life. The way MLM works MLM is going beyond borders like a huge wave. Everyone who hears the network-joining pitch is going to be perplexed and wonder if it is all true. People will ask about their realistic chances of making the kind of money that is shown in the pitch literature. Let us see how it works: Sign-up Some will approach you. He’s an existing distributor. He is trying to recruit you. On Signing up you will be bound by contract with the principal company for whom you will be selling. The distributor becomes your sponsor. You will undergo extensive training by the sponsor or the business on the product lines as well as on selling methods. A small amount is ($100) for a starter kit to know all. Retail Selling In MLM, you need to have 2 agendas. The first would be to buy the products for you and your family’s consumption. At this stage, you see that if you make a purchase of $100 per month, you will be entitled to a rebate of 15%. You save 15%. Besides buying products for yourself, you might purchase for your family and friends and build up your sales volumes. As you increase the sales volume, your discounts also keep increasing. These are as per the slabs and you can end up claiming up to 45% discounts on a case-to-case basis. Recruiting & Building Distributor Network The time now is for recruiting other distributors under you. When you sign up someone, you become their sponsor. As you develop your network, you earn income from the sales generated by your distributors down the line. This is in the form of incentives, discounts, bonuses, and royalties. You have five distributors who place $500 worth of orders with you. You will be buying the products from your sponsor at a discount of 30% and each of your distributors will buy from you at 20%. So, you make 10% on each transaction. When your network grows, the business volumes of your distributors grow. Their networks under them grow and gain by higher slab discounts. There comes a saturation point and then it is time to buy directly from the company. It may seem easy, but it is painstaking work. You will need a lot of dedicated time to do this. This is when to choose whether to pursue MLM on a full-time basis. Those who have persevered have yielded results. Variations of MLM Schemes The concept of MLM involves sales and distribution of products through distributors. They buy for self-use and focus on recruiting and distributors under them. This is to make sales happen automatically when each of the distributors buys products for self-use and furthers the recruitment and the network. A lot of criticism, cynicism and unfair trading charges have been leveled against MLM. MLM companies have been members of Direct Selling Agents Associations and have been compliant with the Trade regulations and systems as set up by the authorities for the mentioned system. Companies focusing on quality products have benefitted a lot from MLM. It is only the quality of the product that entices people to become distributors. They also buy the product for their own use. Trained Distributors can create higher business volumes through the network. Variations of the MLM Concept Several concepts or variations of MLM networks exist. There have been schemes where networks of distributors have been established for selling not one company’s products but to provide a catalog of products. These products are from various Companies. They invite distributors to buy those products that they find useful and needful. The catalog is circulated like a periodical. Subscription is charged when the distributors subscribe to it. Distributors get a discount on the catalog. This system sounds too good to be true. Sometimes, these businesses are unable to deliver what they promise, in terms of product quality, training, and guarantees, etc. This way the whole system can go rudderless. Chain Letters Hot on the trails of MLM, have been assorted concepts making rounds in different countries at different times. One such scheme is the concept of Chain Letter Network, where you receive a letter asking you to send a small amount like 5$ to the five persons listed in the letter and then copies incorporating your name on top of the list and send it out to others with the same instructions. When the people read your letter, they send you the 5$ and circulate more letters adding their names to the list. One keeps getting money till the network is expanding. This is a money-making scheme only. Such schemes do not yield any real income in the long run. No trading is involved. Enough people join in and the scheme keeps going on. Many different versions exist. Most of them conform to the trade regulations of their countries too. Such schemes may work in theory. They are based on multiplier effects. Morally and ethically, the schemes will not gain traction from the community at large. Before investing, you must know the MLM scheme in detail. A Brief Overview of Multi Level Marketing

Multi Level Marketing, or Network Marketing as it is known throughout the globe, is a rapidly expanding phenomena.

The fact that anybody, anywhere can become a distributor and earn money from growing the network without having to give up any other job or make any extra investments into this company makes it extremely appealing to individuals from all walks of life to try to join the network. It is estimated that Network Marketing accounts for more than 70% of Direct Selling Revenues in the United States alone. Though no statistics are available to corroborate income estimates at the national level, it is believed that over 50 million individuals worldwide are involved in Multi Level Marketing.

Though there is no recorded history of the birth of Multi Level Marketing, it is widely assumed that this idea originated with ‘Nurtralite,' previously known as California Vitamin Company, which manufactures dietary supplement products. The Company used to participate in Direct Selling in the early 1940s.

The idea of Multi Level or Network Selling seems to have evolved by chance when Distributors found that they were producing greater sales for the Company by introducing their friends and known individuals to the Nutralite business opportunity. There was no mechanism in place at the time to recognize and reward distributors for their efforts in recruiting additional distributors for the business. With the understanding dawning on the Distributors and the Company, the practice of paying a 2% incentive to the sponsor Distributor on sales made by the Distributor and the network that he sponsored or created was implemented. This resulted in the modern-day method of 'Pyramid Selling.'

Nutralite saw extraordinary development and profitability in the following decades as a result of its rapidly expanding network not only in the United States but also on other continents. In the early 1960s, two individuals, Richard DeVos and Jay Van Andelc, who were Nutralite Distributors, broke away to form their own firm, Amway, which grew to be the largest in the MLM industry world over. The Direct Selling Association of the United States reported that approximately 25% of its members were engaged in the MLM channel of selling in the 1990s, but by 2009, it was discovered that over 94 percent of the members were practicing this method, accounting for approximately 97 percent of total Direct Sales.

While the figures show positive trends and companies frequently promote the success stories of individuals who have become millionaires in business, it should be noted that there is growing concern in the trade and governments of various countries that have raised concerns about the authenticity of the pyramid compensation method, which they believe is an inherently flawed model. Since 1998, China has prohibited this kind of Direct Selling. However, commerce seems to be expanding at an unparalleled rate across the rest of the globe.
