Brain Curd #260
Brain Curds are lightly edited daily writing - usually flash fiction and sometimes terrible on purpose.
He's gonna be Frank with you. Read the rest of The Frank Program here on Tumblr! This is part two - start with yesterday’s episode.
Dr. Jung was unfazed by Frank’s brazen lack of self-awareness. “Who would like to speak next?”
Big Mike raised his hand. Jung gestured toward him and he now had the room’s attention.
“Frankie, you’ve been like a brother to me since as long as I can remember. Everyone in high school called us The Twin Mikes, we were so inseparable. But ever since I came back here and you let me crash in the studio - thank you, buy the way - I’ve just seen you destroying yourself. You haven’t been the same, man. I swear you’ve been on a new drug every week. I’m not one to turn away from a good party, but… I know you’re not doing it for fun. You’re goddamn miserable. I’m going through a divorce and somehow you’re a bigger mess than I am. It’s nuts.”
The room waited with bated breath for him to continue.
“I mean, that’s pretty much it. You need to go to rehab, dude.”
Frank snorted. “No way. I’m at the top of my game, Mikey! The top! Have you seen the sorts’a guests I can pull? Chuck over there owns like a quarter of all the money! All of it! Even the fruity money, like euros and rupees.”
“It’s true,” Chuck nodded. “I recently purchased the entirety of Cambodia.”
“So no, I ain’t in need of some froofy-ass rehab clinic. I’m happy as a clam.”
“Are you sure about that?” Chad stood up and slowly walked over to the desk. He sat in the guest’s position, not breaking eye contact. “Frank, do you remember what we talked about last time I was in this seat?”
Frank gulped. “No.”
“I’ll remind you, then. You told me it was your first smoke in years.”
“Yeah, I suppose it might’a been.”
“You told me you were ‘losing your boy’.”
“So what? Old news.”
“There’s someone here you haven’t acknowledged. Someone you need to talk to.”
“The doc and I don’t have much in common, Chad.”
“You know who I’m talking about. You need to talk to your kid.”
“Chad, may I just say, I loved your Halloween special. Top notch.”
Chad furrowed his brow. “Frank, talk to your son.”
“I have no son.” Frank stated, gravel in his throat. There was a subdued anger in it, perhaps some sadness, but there was no question in it. He pointed at Mike. “And I’m not going to rehab!” He pointed at Anita. “And there’s nothing to get better about! I’m not gonna ‘love myself’ because that was your job! And you’re just gonna have to live with it that you failed! You’re gonna have to live with it that you broke apart a family, Anita, and you broke our boy, too!” Frank jumped out of his chair and made way for the door.
Mike jumped in front of the exit. “I’m not letting you go, buddy. You need help.”
Dr. Jung shook her head. “Let him go. We can only help him if he wants help.”
“No, fuck that!” Mike stood his ground. “I’m not letting you go, Frankie!”
“Get out of my way!” Frank headbutted Mike. “I ain’t going to no California liberal rehab facility where they make you paint portraits of fruit and ride bicycles on the beach! I was born in Texas and I’ll die in Texas!”
Anita tried to pull him away. “You won’t die in rehab, Frank! You can come back home after! You can get your life back!”
“No I can’t! There’s nothing left for me! Nothing!” Frank broke down and started crying. He fell to his knees. “Goddammit! How many times I gotta tell you people I don’t wanna cry in front’o ya?” He sobbed. “Fuck all of you!”
Dr. Jung used the relative calm as an opportunity to present Frank’s options. “Frank, in a minute I’m going to ask Mike to get out of the way of the exit. But first, I’d like to tell give you two options. You can go back out there and continue down the path you’ve been taking - a cold, sad path of decay, the road to hell paved with bricks of cocaine and heroin. We won’t stop you, but the people who care - the people in this room - will hurt for you.” She paused to get Frank’s reaction. His tears had slowed. “The other option, the one we’d all like to see happen, is that Mr. Tangent has offered to pay for your treatment at one of the best facilities in the country, with a lovely view of the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, Daryl will guest host your show.”
Frank looked over at Daryl, who gazed back with a stoic intensity. There was an understanding between the two, hidden in the eight feet of air between their faces. “Alright,” Frank said. “I’ll do it. Thanks for letting me be Frank with all of you.”
Please comment, reblog, like, and follow if you enjoyed - I'd love to know what you think! See you again tomorrow.

HEATHER JUNG
05.10.1980 (40) Cardiothoracic Surgeon Rhythm Guitar, Class of ‘06 Han Yeseul
CONTENT WARNINGS N/A
IN RECOGNITION OF THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE REQUISITE COURSE OF STUDY AND IN MEMORATION OF THE FACULTY OF THE [REDACTED] SCHOOL OF MEDICINE BY VIRTUE OF AUTHORITY GRANTED BY THE CHARTER OF [REDACTED] HEREBY CONFER Heather Haewon Jung THE DEGREE OF Doctor of Medicine …
“We’re on at six? In the morning?”
“Dave and Anand are wearing their robes over their basketball shorts, if you’re looking for inspo…”
“What do you take me for?” “—Don’t answer that.”
( … )
10:07 AM
Rumor has it that going into the OR with Dr. Jung is akin to walking into the lion’s den.
The way down always starts with the first mistake. There’s no grace in the feeling, like a single child caught redhanded under that hawk-eyed gaze, only you’ve got someone’s life in your palms and all you have to show for it is passing along the wrong tool or making an incision too deep to be good.
The learning curve ahead is a tumultuous climb uphill. Expect to slip in your footing, tens, hundreds of times, and the understanding that the verbal lashings-learnings are never going to become easier to take.
When you finally land rock-steady, the joy-relief and firm acknowledgement will be just as unmatched.
( … )
11/07/2004 THE CHAIN BY FLEETWOOD MAC (Arranged.)
“Not bad for a first run.”
You undo the setup with everybody else, unplugging the amp before you toss the damn thing back where it belongs. Progress takes hours of dedication, and they’re at a point in the semester where there isn’t much of it at their disposal. No one really minds, not even those moments of stagnancy. Their best always happens when time finally stills.
The doorbell rings. You think to the embarrassing lack of pocket money on your person and act fast.
“Nose goes.”
( … )
Polaroid #5: Woman and Two Children, circa 1992
Between the two of them, Henry is the filial one. An unexpected role reversal if there was to be one, the oldest rebuked for not being like the youngest, the lack of tact astonishing when their mother has known nothing but properness and propriety.
Mom has always been lovely, even in the wake of the forces that would threaten it. Heather flips through the old sepia-faded photo albums and feels that pang of regret for not having made it easier for her.
(Man. It’s really that age, huh.)
( … )
iMessage 1 Notification from Suji 4:12 PM
Did you really go golfing with the head?
4:14 PM 🤔

No you didn’t, but to be fair, you’ve been a little too selfish to be one for the power plays at work. A woman of opportunity does what she has to do, so you can at least be flattered by being considered the ambitious sort.

Finished up earlier than I’d thought.

“You good, Dad?”
A grunt in affirmation. He’s got an armful of weeds, yanked clean from the deep of the earth. Behind them is the field, full yellow petal-heads unfurled to follow the ways of the July sun, endless in their piety. Small-time religion of sorts, but it’s fitting with the ways of these parts. It doesn’t sit so well with her, but she’s not here to give blessings that aren’t hers to offer.
Heather continues to watch. Somewhere, Ma’s watching too, elsewhere. Dad’s sure of it. That’s a different kind of faith, too, that Heather doesn’t know of it, but it’s not exactly her time just yet, is it.
Maybe learn to do better, for now. Put away that age-old impulse to uproot anyone and anything, well-meaning as it may be, and look, for once. Dad kneels down again, pulls for what he’s got. The lopsided grin that blooms on his face is one you haven’t seen in years.
You’re a step closer to making up your mind. Dusting off your knees, you trudge forward. “Let me join you, anyway?”
Who are you to deny it? And who would you become if you did?

Brain Curd #259
Brain Curds are lightly edited daily writing - usually flash fiction and sometimes terrible on purpose.
He's gonna be Frank with you. Read the rest of The Frank Program here on Tumblr!
The studio was crowded, yet quiet, packed full of people in folding chairs who ostensibly cared for Frank’s wellbeing: Chuck Tangent, his legs crossed and his hands behind his head; Big Mike, tapping his foot and checking his watch; Chad Graves, legs wide and leaning forward in his chair; Dr. Heather Jung, who scribbled on her notebook (she was paid to be there); and even a slightly unfamiliar looking Daryl, who hadn’t set foot in the building for nearly three months and in the entire time hadn’t even considered a haircut.
Anita barged through the door, steaming mad. “I have no idea where he’s gone. I told him to be here at nine o’clock.”
“Yep,” Big Mike said. “That’s what you get for trusting an addict to walk himself to his own intervention.”
“I didn’t tell him it was an intervention! I said all his best friends would be here to welcome him back!”
“Listen, Anita… Frank may be an idiot, but he’s not stupid. He probably ran off to some crack den. Good luck finding him again.”
Anita sighed. “Daryl, I am so sorry you have to see your father go through this.”
Daryl’s tired eyes showed no sign of relief, nor remorse. He barely reacted at all, just inhaling and exhaling before closing his eyes and leaning back in the chair.
“It’s not your fault.” She continued. “He made his choices.”
Chad patted Daryl on the shoulder. “It’s gonna be alright, bud, I promise.”
“Yeah,” Mike snorted. “I’m sure even if Frankie keels over in an alley, he’ll come back to haunt you as a ghost.”
Chad glared at him. “Now is not the time, Mike.”
Mike looked down at the floor. “Yeah, yeah, you’re right. Sorry, kid.”
Anita pulled away from the peephole on the door and waved her arms in the air. “He’s coming! This is not a drill!” She ran to her seat as Frank entered the building.
“I’m back, assholes!” He declared. “I know you all missed…” He made eye contact with Daryl, whose expression didn’t lighten up a bit when he walked in the room. “… me.”
He took his seat and pulled the microphone where he wanted it. “Who wants to be interviewed first? I got a hell’a lot of catching up to do with the lot of ya. Chuck, what ever happened with that presidential run o’yours?”
“My AI daughter had the most successful third party run in history. She won an entire state.”
“Which one?”
“Missouri.”
“Ouch. My condolences.”
“Ahem,” Dr. Jung cleared her throat. “Before everyone gets too distracted, I suggest we all take out our prepared statements. Who would like to start?”
Anita raised her hand. Jung nodded, so she began reading from her handwritten sheet of paper. “Frank, when I married you, I saw a light in your eyes that sparkled with enthusiasm for life. And when we divorced, I knew that light was still there and that it would keep you going as we entered our independent new lives. Today, I don’t see that light in your eyes at all. It’s gone out. And despite our differences, that breaks my heart.”
“So, uh…” Frank leaned forward. “Does that mean y’want me back?”
“No.”
Frank leaned back again. “Good. I didn’t want to either. Bitch.”
She continued reading. “I worry knowing you’re falling apart out there on the streets, trying drug after drug just trying to find a high that feels as good as life used to feel on its own. But it’s never going to work, Frank. There is no drug that can replace loving yourself.”
He chuckled. “Don’t be so sure. Check this out.” He pulled out a baggie from his pocket. “I got heroin!”
Mike lunged at him and wrestled the bag away.
“Hey, hey, hey! Not so grabby! I brought plenty for everyone!”
Mike took the bag, glared at him, and handed it to Dr. Jung. Frank got up from the floor and brushed himself off.
“Y’all got no manners, I swear.”
“I just…” Anita held back tears. “I just want to see you get better, Frank.”
“Wait a damn minute…” Frank looked at every face in the room. Each one was deadly serious. It could only mean one thing. “This is a goddamn intervention, isn’t it?”
Nobody responded. Perhaps they were all too shocked that he hadn’t already figured it out.
“I don’t have a problem, y’all! Ha!” He chuckled. “I’m not addicted to nothin’. I used all sorts o’stuff and I’m fine. Don’t even need it. Could quit right now if I want.” He pulled out a cigarette and stuck it in his mouth. “Anybody got a light?”

Brain Curd #221
Brain Curds are lightly edited daily writing - usually flash fiction and sometimes terrible on purpose.
He's gonna be Frank with you. Read the rest of The Frank Program here on Tumblr!
Frank glared at the person sitting across from him at the studio table. The woman tried her best not to make eye contact as he attempted to dig through her soul with his piercing eyes. He sniffed, repeatedly.
Bike Mike walked in and handed the others cups of coffee. “Morning, everyone! Hope we’re ready to get started recording.”
Frank didn’t reach out to take his cup, so Mike set it down next to him. He just looked at it, with the same intensity as he’d looked at the woman, who cradled her cup like a baby bird and took little sips from it, mostly as something to do with her hands.
The recorder’s red light was on, and had been for some time. Recently, Frank had been losing track of some things - closing up shop, once second nature, became easy to miss as he floated through various highs trying to find one he liked.
“Where is today’s guest, Mike?” Frank slurred.
“She’s right here. This is Dr. Heather Jung. She’s an expert in substance abuse.”
Frank looked at Mike like he wanted to strangle him. Because he did.
“You weren’t finding us guests, we need to make a show, so I booked her. I think it’s an interesting topic.”
“You would think that, ya deadbeat cuckold.”
Mike rolled his eyes. “That’s a low blow, Frank.”
“No, that’s what your wife gave me last night.”
Mike banged on the table. “Fuck you, man! I stick by you when everyone else leaves and you treat me like dirt!”
“I’ll stop treating you like dirt when you stop sleeping in it.”
“I’ll stop sleeping in it when you get us a goddamn vacuum cleaner!”
“Oh, fuck this.” Frank pulled out a baggie of white powder and snorted it straight out of the plastic. Most of it ended up on his nose. He sniffed and wiggled his nose a bit, then wiped himself off with his sleeve.
His whole body jittered, then settled. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Frank Program. Today’s guest is esteemed - is she esteemed?”
Mike scowled. “Yes.”
“She’s esteemed. Dr. Heather Jung, drug expert. Say hello.”
She cleared her throat. “Uh, hi. Frank, are you okay?”
“Never better. I’m doing just fine handling myself. And I ask the questions here, sugartits. Capisce?”
“‘Capisce’? Frank, you’re a pretentious little bitch when you’re high.”
“Fuck off.”
“Okay,” Dr. Jung said, trying to keep a calm voice despite her nerves tensing up. “Why don’t you ask me a question?”
“Fine.” Frank leaned back in his chair and stared at the ceiling. It was hastily boarded up months ago, after… an incident. He and Daryl had always talked about having it re-done properly, but neither got around to it. Now, Frank had accepted, it wasn’t going to happen.
“Doctor Jung, do you know what it’s like to lose everything you ever cared about?”
“I’ve had my struggles, same as anyone has.”
“No. Have you ever lost everything?”
“I suppose not.”
Frank leaned forward and growled. “Then don’t you dare try to take away what little I have left.”
Frank got up and walked out of the studio. He wasn’t seen for several weeks.
Please comment, reblog, like, and follow if you enjoyed - I'd love to know what you think! See you again tomorrow.
