Chapter 8 - Like Lightning
He drew her back against his chest so she could recover her breath, his fingers trailing lightly along her neck and shoulder, down her arm to finally lace their hands together. His nose was buried in the nape of her neck and while she knew his fangs were out, he didn’t bite her. “I could have lost you.”
“But you didn’t.” He hummed a sound, somewhere between chastising and agreement. She clasped his fingers tighter for a moment, understanding what he didn’t want to put into words. The fact that she hadn’t died wasn’t the point.
“I don’t like feeling things,” he said. She thought perhaps what he meant was that her mortality scared him. A vampire should fear nothing. Especially one as old as he was. And besides that, he shouldn’t care about a human in the first place. It just wasn’t done among vampires. She was a liability to him, from his perspective. But she wasn’t one he wanted to give up.

Florida's Emancipation Day Celebrations Held Locally
The African American Heritage Society of East Pasco County, Inc. and the Florida African American Heritage Preservation Network hosted the first annual Emancipation Day with a celebration at Agnes Lamb Park in Dade City on May 20. The activities honored traditions of the African American heritage. As for history, on May 20, 1865, General Edward McCook announced in Tallahassee, Florida, that all enslaved people were free. This was the first notice of the proclamation of freedom. Florida Celebrates Emancipation Day on May 20 In contemporary times, folks hear about this as Juneteenth in other locales, but in Florida, the emancipation was actually on May 20. The Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery was delivered by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, in Washington, D.C. Ironically the Civil War ended just a few days after the May 20th receipt. It is believed that President Lincoln’s actions altered the goals of the Civil War with the Emancipation Proclamation. Therefore, its delivery just after the Union’s victory at the Battle of Antietam was strategic. Historians also theorize that the proclamation would inspire many, especially the enslaved in the confederacy, to support the Union. The Program Celebrates Florida’s Emancipation Day: May 20, 1865 Brockmann, Sara. Reenactors recreate a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation at the Knott House Museum in Tallahassee. 2015. State Archives of Florida, Florida Memory. The evening’s written program of the first annual event in Dade City stated, “in the month of May, we honor those intrinsic values related to natural rights and freedom as we proudly salute one of the most significant days in the annals of Florida’s History: May 20, 1865.” On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing enslaved people in the rebelling Southern states. More than two years later on May 10th, Union General Edward McCook arrived in Tallahassee. General McCook established his headquarters at the Hagner House, now known as the Knott House. Fred Hearns, Curator of Black History from the Tampa Bay History Center, is seen giving the Keynote Address. Image courtesy of Facebook. Keynote speaker, Fred Hearns, Curator of Black History from the Tampa Bay History Center, explained the significance of the date to him and related that the event has been celebrated in Tampa for a number of years, as well as at the Chinsegut Hill Historic Site in Hernando County. Mr. Hearns conveyed that Tallahassee has been honoring Emancipation Day for many years. Hearns invited all to the Tampa Bay History Center's upcoming event on June 19, 2024, entitled “Fabric of Freedom.” Fashion and Black history will collide at the “Fabric of Freedom” event, providing an innovative program, with more information available at the Tampa Bay History Center site at https://tampabayhistorycenter.org/blog/. The master of ceremonies for the evening was the Reverend Dr. Emery Ailes, President of Lifeline University. Recognition of dignitaries who also served as greeters included: Mayor Scott Black of Dade City, Stephanie Black, Executive Director of the Pioneer Museum, Madonna Jervis Wise, Educator/Historian/Author, Angela Lewis-Bennett of Branch NAACP #5630, Eric Theodore, African-American Heritage Society of East Pasco County, and James Walters, Dade City Chief of Police. All presented greetings, review of projects, and congratulations on the newly formed celebration. Mayor Black announced that the City Commission would be delivering a proclamation to the group at the upcoming meeting. Madonna Wise spoke for herself, Stephanie Black, and the team who developed the Dade City Walking Tour: Mary Katherine Mason Alston, Margaret Angell, Stephanie Black, Britton Janning, James Walters, Melody Floyd, Wayne Sweat, Eric Baker, and Judge Lynn Tepper. Sixteen Stops on the Dade City Historic Walking Tour feature African American History Highland's Motors, part of the Dade City Historic Walking Tour. Image colorized and restored by Bill Price. Courtesy of his Facebook page. Madonna highlighted sixteen of the stops on the Dade City Walking Tour that particularly feature African American history and invited suggestions for additions. Madonna explained that the Dade City Self-Guided QR and Walking Tour was the brainchild of Alston and Angel, and the editing was expertly completed by team members, Imani Asukile and Judge Tepper. Angela Lewis- Bennett and Eric Theodore discussed the projects underway including scholarships and community projects. A Perfect Reading of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation Emancipation Day Celebration image courtesy of Tampa Bay History Center. The culmination of the evening, which is customary across the communities for the day, was the dramatic reading of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation by several local dignitaries, aiming to foster a deeper connection to this pivotal moment in history. With perfect symmetry, each of the four readers recited a portion of the proclamation. The readers included: Mayor Pro Tempore Normita Woodard, the Reverend Dr. Brian Butler of Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, Mayor Scott Black, and Dennis Feltwell. With real conviction and perfect diction, the four readers presented emotional deliveries. Remarks were also given by Jesse Pisors, President of Pasco Hernando State College who praised the African American Society of East Pasco and the organizers for the important remembrances. He also brought greetings as the newly appointed President of Pasco Hernando State College from all three campuses. Storytelling and Line Dancing in the African Tradition Conclude the Event To conclude the evening, the audience was brought back to two of the traditions of the African American ancestors which included storytelling and line dancing. Windell Campbell came to the stage to tell two eloquent stories. Campbell is a retired schoolteacher of 41 years who has been awarded many accolades for his storytelling, including work with many Tampa Bay libraries and festivals. He performed a rendition of the flying Africans that is rooted in an African legend from 1803 about a slave woman and her baby in the cotton fields as well as a symbolic story of the ‘Selfish Giant’ and his garden as a beautiful metaphor of kindness and giving. Storytelling was a traditional African American folklore for the enslaved. The evening was concluded with a couple of rounds of line dancing, as the celebration ended with a sense of joy and hope. (By the way, the dignitaries and readers were pretty good at the line dancing!) An image from the 2023 Florida Emancipation Day Celebration in Brooksville by Diane Bedard. Florida Emancipation Day is celebrated at Chinsegut Hill Historic Site Also On May 18, another Florida Emancipation Day celebration was held at Chinsegut Hill Historic Site. Fred Hearns led this captivating program alongside Gary Ellis, director emeritus of the Gulf Archaeology Research Institute, and Rodney Kite-Powell, director of the Touchton Map Library at Tampa Bay History Center. They uncovered the fascinating historical significance of the Hill. Michael Jones, Ed.D. shared insights into the local implications of recent archaeological findings, while Jesse Pisors, Ed.D., President of Pasco-Hernando State College, welcomed visitors to explore the historic house with complimentary tours offered by the college. This was followed by a Q&A session with Rodney Kite-Powell right after the presentations, followed by a 30-minute house tour! The first tour began at 11 a.m., with the final tour beginning at 4 p.m. The Tampa Bay History Center has made a concerted effort to bring knowledge and awareness of local history involving African American people to Florida’s Nature Coast. This is the second year that the Florida Emancipation Day celebration was held at Chinsegut Hill Historic Site. Read the full article

🐑 Clarice M. Starling Headcanons 💙
Just a compilation of some Clarice Starling headcanons and interpretation stuff I have, I think she’s absolutely lovely. Let me know if you guys want more! Trigger warning for some mentions of parental death, and religion struggles.
Note: This is my personal interpretation of her. If you don’t agree with me, that’s okay! I respect your interpretation. Please don’t attack me for my interpretation of her just because it doesn’t align with yours. Enjoy!
The M. in Clarice’s name stands for “Marie”
Clarice has two younger brothers and a little sister, she’s the oldest of the four siblings.
I headcanon her siblings are named Matthew (second oldest), Patrick (middle child), and Molly (youngest).
Her siblings grew up and went into different careers— Matthew became a psychologist, Patrick became a law professor, and Molly became a nurse practitioner.
Clarice eventually reunites with her siblings at some point and they grow to become extremely close. (I’m definitely not mad Thomas Harris mentioned them like once or twice in the Silence of the Lambs novel and then never tells us what happened to them.)
Clarice has sensory issues with certain foods.
Clarice is around 5’1”-5’2”, she was born pretty small.
Clarice is a lesbian
Clarice Starling is autistic
Clarice looks almost exactly like her mom but has her dad’s darker hair, nose, and eyes
Clarice as a kid used to do horseback riding or running as a extracurricular activity
Clarice did track and field in high school eventually because of how much she enjoyed running.
Even though she probably tries to stay hydrated most of the time, her favorite drink is Diet Coke, Diet Dr. Pepper, or Fanta.
Clarice still occasionally thinks about the kids she used to counsel before she got into Quantico and hopes wherever they are, they’re doing better.
Clarice gives some of the best hugs but she doesn’t do it extremely often
Clarice has a very contagious laugh, you’d just want to laugh along with her
Clarice is pretty ticklish but she’d never say a word about it, specifically her sides, back of neck, and ribs are where she’s vulnerable at.
She has a soft spot for kids, she wants to listen to them and thinks what they have to say is important.
One of Clarice’s comfort foods is brownies
Clarice will occasionally hum or sing softly to herself if she’s alone studying.
Clarice still visits Noble occasionally at The Smithsonian just to check in on him and see how the entomology exhibit is going.
Some of Clarice’s favorite musical artists are Eric Clapton, Queen, Blondie, Louis Armstrong, Joan Jett, Alanis Morrisett, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and a few others out there.
Her favorite fruits are oranges, apples, and grapes.
When Clarice met Ardelia at Quantico she immediately felt like they’d start a very intimate and interesting bond, which they eventually did.
Clarice struggled with her faith in Lutheranism after her dad died, it kind of just shook her up a bit and made her question a lot of things.
Clarice still looks at that photo of her horse, Hannah, years after the events of Silence of the Lambs. It gives her the strength to continue and remind herself healing takes time and it’s a process. She knows she’ll be okay soon enough.

Thoughts/Observations on Joker, part 1
AKA I Spent 7 Hours on This, I Will Die if it Gets Less Than Three Notes
I could rave for hours about this movie’s cinematography. Literal hours.
Nobody talks enough about Arthur’s full-fledged dedication to his clown craft. Man is working 60+ hours a week and does not break a sweat. I also fucking love this clowny face he pulls here. The first shot we see of Arthur in full. Holy shit is it beautiful. God bless Joaquin Phoenix.
These two shots together are incredibly important to me. In a split-second we see Arthur’s disbelief that he cannot control the whirlwind of emotions inside of his own head, not even being able to produce a smile, and then his resignation because it’s just another day. Heartbreaking.
Awwww shiiiiit
Gotham City is such a dump but I’d be bullshitting myself if I said I didn’t love the grimy aesthetic of it. It’s technicolor trash.
Arthur loves his job so much. He genuinely enjoys being Carnival. That hurts a lot to think about in hindsight.
This man just got his ass handed to him and he is STILL SPRAYING THE FAKE FLOWER ON HIS VEST
YOU WANNA TALK ABOUT DEDICATION
This opening card is so imposing. Not only does it take up the entire screen to the point of running off the edges, but it’s shielding Arthur from view. Arthur is invisible in light of Joker in Arthur’s own movie.
I screenshotted this by accident but I felt a need to put it here because he’s just so adorable. Even right before an episode.
E y e s s s s s
E Y E S S S S S
I desperately want to know what got Arthur sent to Arkham the first time. A suicide attempt? A public breakdown? I really want fanfics of it.
There’s a really, really good fanfiction on AO3 by Arthur_Fleck about Arthur slowly recovering and meeting a girl called In the Major and Minor Arcana
I highly, highly recommend it
Okay. Joaquin’s immersion into his characters -- all of them -- is absolutely incredible. But Arthur is just ... off the charts, man. No two of his characters are the same and he embeds himself so deeply in their skin, but Joaquin buried himself so deeply into Arthur’s brain that it is so hard for me to see any of Joaquin at all. God, he’s incredible and this shot makes me emotional because this just is Arthur.
ARTHUR WOULD BE A GREAT DAD AND I DO NOT ACCEPT ARGUMENTS
It really speaks to how shitty Gotham is that this man is having a full-fledged screaming/laughing breakdown on the bus and nobody is batting an eye
I adore how the cinematography paints Arthur as so small to his own environment. He’s a speck of dust. A fleck.
Babie is wincing :((((
I have been trying to figure out the layout of this apartment for months and my inability to, even with a floor plan, is driving me insane
I just found out that the Budweiser beer jingle Here Comes the King is on the soundtrack and plays when Arthur comes home and that made me go feral
I A M M U R R A Y , K I N G O F A S S H O L E S
It is second nature for me to do this stupid pose every time I watch this scene
Arthur blending into the crowd here makes me ... so happy. He looks so happy.
This is Arthur’s best laugh of the movie, fuck you. I am incredulous that I was the only person laughing when I saw this in the theater opening night.
This is one of the few moments I really see Joaquin shine through Arthur. I don’t know why, but this lighting and his voice and his intensity gives me visceral flashbacks to watching a little boy Joaquin in Parenthood. God, I love this man.
It really is a testament to Penny’s (lack of) parenting that Arthur is day dreaming about receiving affection and validation from a parent figure when his own mother is literally right there
GOD DAMN THIS MAN IS GORGEOUS
But also big bruise :(
Yes, I shall trust you, man named Randall smiling down at me in low angle light
Why was Hoyt not informed that Arthur got his ass beat on the job? As Arthur’s employer he should’ve literally been the first person to know so he could make a note of it. Either he wasn’t told or he gave so little of a fuck that his consciousness astral projected to another plane of existence while he shoved the white powder down his throat and forgot Arthur existed at all.
Literally fuck Hoyt. I hate him even more that his office is the coolest shit in the world
ARTHUR KNOWS THE CUSTOMER SERVICE SMILE
Joaquin dislocated his knee in this scene, the poor boy
I could write a full damn essay about why the misleading advertising of Sophie as a prominent character was the greatest twist of the whole movie. Literally I am still speechless how the movie did that.
I am not kidding when I say my sister has this same color scheme in the bathroom of our house and realizing that made me werewolf
Also Arthur being the son Penny doesn’t deserve warms and breaks my heart
The complete lack of reaction to Penny’s “Don’t you have to be funny to be a comedian” makes me laugh and cry internally
This shot? Gorgeous. His face? Deadly. That jawline? Cutting diamonds. Hotel? Trivago.
I really, really want a Joker 2, but at the same time I do not want a Joker 2 because Joaquin Phoenix has a baby who needs him now and he cannot be pulling shit like losing 52 lbs for a role
Also I REALLY need to discuss how much this brass ballet reminds me so heavily of Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. Holy fuck, I got actually chills in the theater
Like holy fuck
And then this shot reminds me so heavily of the opening of Fedddy vs Jason with Freddy Krueger laughing over his newspaper collage of missing children. Holy fuck I love this cinematography.
Guys. G - Guys, his name tag says Dr. Carnival, can you hear me s o b b i n g
This part is so Chaplinesque, the way he slides the gun into his coat again
These children look so afraid of him for dropping the gun and wowie, does that really hurt
Was this asshole supposed to be modeled after Eric Trump? Because I get really douchebaggy Eric Trump vibes (minus the jacked teeth) from this ringleader
I don’t have much to say here except I am in love with the way Artie’s hair sticks straight up in bottle curls when the clown wig slides off
Also if you decide it’s a good idea to mess with a man dressed as a clown laughing maniacally on the subway of one of the most dangerous cities in the world, you are asking him to shoot you and I will not feel sorry for you
I will never not be in love with this image. I fell in love with it in the teaser trailer and almost went feral in the middle of the mall when I saw this was the poster they used to advertise the movie with. My friend described this movie as “chaos, beautified,” and nothing sums it up as well as this picture.
JOAQUIN AND TODD MADE THIS ENTIRE SEQUENCE UP AND I AM IN LOVE
Hello, handsome

Part 9
Pay Restitution
“How long are you going to be in town?” Bette’s voice muffled on the phone as she bent down to pick up Lorraine’s shoes before tossing them towards the front door. That girl never put her shoes away. “Will you have time for a lunch date?”
“Oh, please, Bette, it’s already on my calendar. You still want to try out that gyro place? I’m dying for some lamb or something.” Evie tossed her own sneakers into the suitcase opened in front of her, George sitting next to the bed watching her every move like a hawk. “Do you want to try for Monday or Tuesday?”
“Tuesday, I have a department meeting Monday and can’t miss it. Were you still going to the parade with us on Thursday? Lorraine wants to see you.”
“Yes, do you mind if my dad joins us?” Evie closed her suitcase and set it next to the door before going into the kitchen to start packing George’s bag. The dog walked behind her, nails tapping in excitement.
“Ooooh, your dad is coming?” Bette’s voice turned teasing.
“Would you believe Max personally called him up and invited him?” Now Bette was laughing. The domineering Maxwell Lord was turning into a total softy and it made her cackle madly. “My dad called me, asking why this strange man was calling him to come and stay for Thanksgiving. I lost it and then told him the whole story.”
“Everything?”
“Yeah.”
---***---
“Max. I love you, too.”
Maxwell’s head shot up so fast, he pulled a muscle in his neck. Grabbing at it with his hand, his eyes frantically searching Evie’s face. He was certain she was mocking him, maybe teasing him. But her face was honest and open, hopeful even.
“Evie, I swear to god. . .” His voice was low and cautious sounding. It seemed almost desperate, so opposite of the powerful businessman who ran one of the most successful companies in the world. In that moment he was brought to his knees. “If you’re joking, it will kill me. I’m sure it will.”
“I’m not joking, Max. I do love you.” Her voice was soft, and it felt like a caress against his skin. He lowered his head and his body curled towards her. She dropped her forehead to her hands, which were clasped around his free one. “But what happened Thursday cannot happen again. Ever. I will not allow you to hurt me like that. And if you do, don’t ever think that you can just show up on my doorstep begging for forgiveness because I won’t give it.”
He dropped his head.
“What can I do to earn your trust again?” His voice was quiet, but eager. He was sorry and so badly wanted to prove to her that he wouldn’t ever hurt her again. He dropped his hand from his neck to their joined clasp. He bent his head to lay it on top of hers and they sat there for a long moment.
“Max.” He raised his head and she raised hers so they could look each other in the eye. In that moment pretenses and pride were stripped back so the barest of emotions were exposed. Together, they were both in vulnerable places, but Maxwell felt like he had the most to lose. She quickly had become his world and he didn’t want to think about it without her.
“Remember when I got sucked into those reports in September?” He nodded. “The little things you did for me? I felt so loved and cared for. Your texts every day gave me something to look forward to. That’s when I knew I was in love with you.”
Maxwell brought their joined hands to his mouth and he kissed her knuckles. He was thrilled to know that the things he did meant something to her, that’s what he wanted her to feel. She pulled their hands towards her and she laid her cheek on his knuckles.
“Knowing that you’re there for me and that you trust me and support me – that’s what I need. I need your words and your actions. And I don’t need you calling me a whore.” She narrowed her eyes at him and he at the courtesy to look chagrined.
“Evie, then let me show you with my actions and my words that I love you and that I’m worthy of your trust.” He slid off the chair, so he was on his knees in front of her. He removed his hands from hers and placed them on her face. She held onto his wrists as he dipped his head and brushed his lips across hers. If she hadn’t known it was coming, she probably would have thought it was a breeze touching her. It was that soft and tender and her heart bloomed in her chest.
“Okay.”
---***---
For weeks after their reconciliation, Evie and Maxwell took it slow. They worked during the week and took turns visiting each other on the weekends, talking nearly daily in between. Unlike their first attempt, this time, they choose to work to get to know each other, to let the rest of the puzzle pieces fall into place. Evie found her love for him growing deeper and wide than she ever thougth possible. And she noticed the nights she slept alone were getting worse, unlike the times she slept with him by her side.
She, along with those closest to him, noted a change in Maxwell as the weeks passed. She wasn’t sure if he realized it himself, but he was chilling out. Eric told her that he was as firm as ever in his leadership at Chimtech and the company was doing well. But amongst his friends, they absolutely noticed.
His personal relationships had begun to change – even Bennett and Marnie noticed he took a kinder tone and inquired about their lives and families. He found his friendships less stiff and more relaxing, taking time to connect with people like Eric and others. He laughed more, he smiled more, and in general he was more pleasant to be around.
That wasn’t to say he didn’t get mad or frustrated and became moody or sullen. But even in those cases, he rarely lashed out as viciously as he did before. Marnie, who knew Maxwell’s father, told Evie on the phone one day that he seemed less like his mother and more like his father – a man with a large heart. Evie wasn’t going to pretend that she didn’t have anything to do with it, she was too proud of the man morphing in front of her.
This was the man she wanted to love, and she was giddy it was the man she was getting.
---***---
Taking the train into the city was certainly convenient as she appreciated the time to get some work done during the trip. But Evie also loved to drive the route whenever she could. The natural beauty of the Hudson River Valley around her made for a gorgeous drive and the rise of the New York City skyline never failed to thrill her.
Today, the drive down had been sunny and while the fall colors were long gone this late in November, she still found the trip to be breathtaking. And with George in the back and her father in the passenger seat, she never felt more content.
“George, stop sniffing my head.” Dr. Blaker groused at his granddog. Both the human and the animal males were getting restless in traffic and she rolled her eyes. George stopped on command and instead dropped his head on to the good doctor’s shoulder and rested there a moment. Evie rolled the window down in the backseat and he immediately stuck his head out the window, preferring this to anything else.
Evie’s phone rang and when she saw it was Maxwell, she smiled and before hitting the Bluetooth button on her steering wheel.
“You’re on speaker with my dad, so behave.” She didn’t even say hello and the silence on the other end made her smile widely. She was getting to know him too well for his liking sometimes.
“I wasn’t going to say anything bad, Evie.” There was a thread of curtness in his tone and now she was grinning and attempting to keep the giggles at bay. He had planned something for sure. “I was just calling to see where you were at because Bennett informed me that there is a nasty accident south of Morningside Park and you might want to find a way around it.”
“Oh, then I’m glad I stayed on the 9-A because I figured all the side roads were going to be crazy because of the holiday. Traffic is a little bad, but I should be there in, oh, half an hour.”
“See you then. Love you.”
“Love you, too.” She hung up and she could feel her father’s grin more than she could see it. “Stop, dad.”
“What? My little girl is in love, can’t a father be happy for that?”
“Not with that grin on your face.”
“What grin, you aren’t even looking at me?”
“I know that grin, dad. Don’t start.” The older man grunted in answer, but the grin was still there. Evie deserved to be happy, he thought. She told him everything and while as a father he wanted to clock Maxwell for calling his daughter a whore, but if Evie found it in her to forgive him, then he could keep his mouth shut. They made each other happy and that was good enough for him.
When they final arrived, she was relieved to find a spot directly in front of his house and to see Maxwell standing on his porch waiting for them. He was dressed in a sweater and jeans, hands in his pocket and smile on his face. He was so relaxed that the worry lines that usually formed on his forehead were completely gone.
He came down the stairs to greet them, kissing Evie’s cheek, shaking Dr. Blaker’s hand, and giving George a few scratches behind the ear. He brought in their bags and guided the doctor into the house while Evie took a short walk to let George relieve himself and stretch his legs a bit. When she entered the house, she unhooked George’s leash and let him bound through the house.
Back when he first learned about the dog, Maxwell assured Evie that George was welcomed to come every time she did and the dog was at home immediately the first time they arrived together. Now, he acted as if he owned the place and took up what had become his spot in front of the fireplace. She smiled as she wandered in behind him, finding her dad and Maxwell sitting in the living room, deep in conversation. She noted they were talking about pharmaceuticals and since she had no interest in the subject, she wandered into the kitchen to say hello to Marnie.
The older woman had come to dote on her employer’s girlfriend and in turn, Evie welcomed the maternal love she lavished. The two sat down, chatting about Thanksgiving dinner and a few other things. The conversation continued even after George wandered into the room. He sat quietly, staring a hole into the cook, hoping for a treat or two and when Evie turned her back to leave, Marni slipped him some ham with a conspiratorial smile.
The afternoon soon faded into evening and the three sat down to enjoy dinner. Marnie had out done herself and the conversation flowed easily. Dr. Blaker was much like his daughter and people couldn’t help but to feel comfortable around him as well. After dinner and dessert, Marnie and Evie cleaned up and the cook took her leave, hugging the younger woman before heading out the door. She let George out to do his business and the two went back to the living room.
Eventually, the day caught up with Dr. Blaker and he took his leave to bed, leaving the two lovers alone. George snored gently on the floor in front of the fire and Evie laid against Maxwell’s strong chest, his arms around her. They stared into the fire, letting the silence envelope them as they relaxed. Evie felt the rumble in his chest before the words came out of his mouth.
“Sunshine, are you happy?”
“I am Max.” And she meant it. They laid there a little longer before the fire died down and they decided to move upstairs to bed. Evie called to George, who followed them up the stairs, hot on their heels. They got ready for bed, their routine a comfortable one. As Maxwell passed by her in the bathroom, he dropped a soft kiss to her shoulder and brushed his hand across her lower back.
The chill of the late November night permeated the house as Evie left the bathroom. She saw Maxwell and George already in bed and she crawled in after them. Here, she never felt cool between the dual furnaces of her man and her dog. She snuggled against Maxwell, who had already fallen asleep. She rested her head on his shoulder and laid her hand on his wrist. She could feel his blood pumping beneath her fingertips and she realized their hearts beat in tandem.
As she fell asleep, she never felt more contented.
---***---
“Why did I agree to come here again?!” Evie had to shout to be heard over the din of the crowd. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade was far better viewed on TV from the comfort of her home and not on the loud and crowded Park Central South. Evie could handle crowds, but this was almost too much. Coupled with the freezing cold and she wished she had said no when invited.
“Because you love me?” Bette was just as loud, her laughter evident in her voice. She hung onto Evie as Bennett stood next to them with Lorraine on his shoulders. The foursome was pressed on all sides as people clamored to get a good look at the parade as it passed. Suddenly, Lorraine was waving her arms as the Young People’s Chorus moved passed.
“Momma! Daddy! Look! It’s Claudette!” The young girl was vibrating with excitement for her best friend. It was an exciting thing to be in the parade and seen by millions across the country.
“I see, baby! But do you see what I see?” Bette pointed and Lorraine looked. She squealed with excitement and briefly forget she was on her father’s shoulders when she tried to stand up. Evie and Bette both reached out to catch her as Bennett swayed to kept hold of her legs. They were able to get her back up on her perch as the flamingo floated past. Lorraine waved excitedly and when the rider waved back, she felt her day had been made.
Soon enough, the parade ended, and the group made their way back to the car. Lorraine chatted a mile a minute about Claudette and the flamingo and a few other things. Evie smiled, feeling as if the young girl’s excitement as seeping into her now that the crushing aura of the parade had passed. As they made it to the car, they climbed in and Bennett quickly started it to get the heater going.
“I’m sorry your dad couldn’t make it, Evie.” Bette turned around to face her.
“Naw, knowing dad, he would have lost his shit the minute he saw all the people. He’s lived in small cities and towns for a reason!” Evie laughed. “Besides, I think he wanted some alone time with Max.”
Bette and Evie began to cackle madly, and Bennett rubbed the back of his neck, wondering how this new development was going to affect his boss’ mood. The ride back to Maxwell’s house was pleasant and she hugged everyone before getting out. As she walked up the steps, a sensation of déjà vu passed over her and she stopped.
Yes, she had walked up these steps plenty of times before, but something about this sent shivers down her spine. Something was going to change and soon. Taking a deep breath, she entered the house and was immediately enveloped in the delicious smells of an early dinner. As she hung up her coat, Maxwell appeared in the foyer, smiling at her.
She smiled back and he leaned in to kiss her, she offered up her lips to his. It was soft and sweet and when she pulled back, Evie almost regretted parting from him. Maxwell put his arm around her waist and walked her into the dining room.
As they sat down to dinner, they laughed and joked. Each one of them snuck food to George, who felt as if he died and gone to heaven. The meal lasted a long time but towards the end, Dr. Blaker pulled out the wishbone from the turkey.
“Here, Evie.” He handed it off and when she offered him the other half to him, he raised his hands and shook his head. So, Evie offered it to Maxwell instead and he gladly took it. They each held a leg of the bone and thought about their wish.
When the moment had passed, they each pulled, and the bone broke in favor of Maxwell. He laughed and Evie giggled.
“Do you think your wish will come true, Max?”
“I can only hope, Evie. I can only hope.”
