By Amy Norton
The virus can trick your body into attacking itself.
Brittany Underwood was 37 when she was hit with COVID early in 2021. Her case was mild, and, like the mom she is, she took care of everyone else because of course the rest of her family had it too. It wasn’t until a couple weeks later that she started to feel lousy—wiped out, constantly thirsty, and dealing with weird issues like blurry vision in one eye.
When Underwood brought those symptoms to her doctor, he decided to run some blood tests. “My blood sugar was through the roof,” Underwood tells SELF. It was so high, in fact, she ended up in the hospital that same day, where they handed her a diagnosis that would change her life: type 1 diabetes.
This autoimmune disease is most often diagnosed by the age of 14—it used to be known as juvenile diabetes because it’s the type that most often hits kids, teens, and young adults. Because Underwood was approaching 40, her case was unusual. But her doctors raised a possible explanation: She’d just had COVID, and they suspected the infection might have triggered her diabetes.
Nearly four years later, we have a lot more than suspicions. In fact, the pandemic has been blamed for a spike in type 1 diabetes. New cases in kids and teens jumped up 16% in the first 12 months of the pandemic and 28% in the following year. (Before 2020, the typical increase was 2% to 3% per year.) And it’s not just type 1. Other autoimmune diseases—including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriasis, and lupus—went up too. Exactly why that happens isn’t fully clear, Sonia Sharma, PhD, an associate professor at La Jolla Institute for Immunology, in La Jolla, California, tells SELF. “But,” she adds, “we do have some clues.”
When your immune system turns on you The idea that COVID could set off a chronic autoimmune disease might seem out there. But, Dr. Sharma says, “it’s not a new concept at all.” Autoimmune diseases are caused by a misguided immune system attack on the body’s own healthy tissue. For that to happen, a perfect storm of conditions has to come together. Genes definitely matter, Dr. Sharma says, since autoimmune diseases tend to run in families, and studies have tied certain genes to higher risks of the conditions. (Underwood says she has a family history of autoimmune diseases.) Your sex assigned at birth matters too: Autoimmune diseases are way more common in women than men, Dr. Sharma notes (though anyone can get them).
But those kinds of risk factors aren’t enough on their own. People have to be exposed to one or more “triggers” that tip the immune system into self-attack mode. And microbes are among those potential sparks, Akiko Iwasaki, PhD, professor of immunobiology at Yale School of Medicine, tells SELF.
Studies have linked a slew of infections—including super-common ones like the flu, cytomegalovirus, and Epstein-Barr virus—to various autoimmune diseases. Epstein-Barr, which eventually infects nearly everyone and is usually no big deal, may be the prime example: A recent study found that the infection likely plays a role in most cases of multiple sclerosis (an autoimmune disease that destroys the protective covering around nerve fibers).
There are different theories on exactly how it happens, but Dr. Iwasaki offers a (relatively) basic overview. First, she says, it’s a little known fact that everybody has some number of immune system cells that are “autoreactive,” meaning they’re capable of going rogue against you. Thankfully, they usually don’t. But in certain people, under certain circumstances, an infection might “activate” those autoreactive immune cells.
“Once they’re activated,” Dr. Iwasaki explains, “they can divide and travel to different tissues in the body, and may start to attack your own cells.” All of that, she adds, is more likely to happen when an infection generates lots of inflammation in the body. An ordinary cold probably won’t do that, but COVID might.
How big is the risk? Even though it can seem like we’ve been living with COVID forever, it’s still a very new thing. Because of that, Dr. Sharma says, it’s only recently that studies have been able to turn up strong evidence that the infection does trigger autoimmune diseases.
That includes this 2023 study of close to 4 million Americans. It found that people diagnosed with COVID had higher odds of developing autoimmune diseases over the next six months, versus COVID-free people. On average, they were roughly three times more likely to be diagnosed with conditions like RA, lupus, psoriasis, celiac disease, and type 1 diabetes.
Really important to point out here: Although three times more likely might sound huge, the risk of any one person developing an autoimmune disease after COVID is still low, Sara Martin, MD, medical director of Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Adult Post-Acute COVID Clinic, in Nashville, tells SELF.
Another 2023 study, published in Clinical Rheumatology, helps put things into context. It found that of 565,000 people with COVID and no history of autoimmune disease, 1% were diagnosed with an autoimmune condition over the next 3 to 15 months. That was 43% higher than the rate among people who didn’t have COVID during the same period. Although that sounds like a lot, it was an increase from roughly 11 to 15 cases per 1,000 people per year. So…not a huge amount, but not something to dismiss either. And if you’re one of the unlucky people who does develop an autoimmune condition, that’s a heavy toll.
“All of a sudden I had this huge life-altering thing,” Underwood says of her diabetes diagnosis. People with type 1 have to take insulin injections every day to stay alive. So Underwood was forced to quickly learn the intricacies of carb counting, adjusting insulin doses, timing meals to avoid dangerous blood sugar drops—and managing them when they did happen. Time and experience, as well as connecting with other people with type 1 diabetes, have taught Underwood a lot. “But I’m still learning, three years later,” she says. “It’s just a constant thing. You can’t take a day off.”
Is there a way to protect yourself? At this point, many of us have had COVID more times than we’d prefer. So does your immune system get used to the virus, and maybe make an autoimmune reaction less likely?
Unfortunately, Dr. Iwasaki says, there’s reason to believe the answer is no. That’s based on what researchers have learned about long COVID, a collection of symptoms like extreme fatigue and brain fog that hits many people post-infection. Prior bouts of COVID do not seem to lower the odds of developing long COVID (and the risk might even go up each time you’re infected). Long COVID, Dr. Iwasaki notes, is different from autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes and RA because the cause isn’t clear and may be due in part to direct damage caused by the virus. But she and other researchers have found that autoimmune reactions to COVID infection may also be behind long COVID symptoms, at least in some people. “I think that’s one clue that reinfection would not lower the risk of autoimmune disease,” Dr. Iwasaki says.
Okay, now for the good news: COVID vaccination might be protective. For one, Dr. Martin says, research shows that vaccination can lower the risk of long COVID, and the more vaccine doses you get, the greater the protection.
There’s also this large study published last year by researchers in China, which found that although COVID was associated with an increase in many autoimmune conditions, those risks were lower among people who’d gotten at least two COVID vaccine doses, versus unvaccinated people.
It’s “absolutely” plausible that vaccination helps, Dr. Sharma says. Vaccination, she explains, primes your immune system to stop the COVID virus “at the front door”—your respiratory tract—so that it can’t hitch a ride around the body, churning up inflammation and, potentially, an autoimmune reaction. And while people can develop autoimmune disease after a mild case of COVID (as Underwood did), research suggests that the odds might be substantially greater if you become severely ill.
“We already recommend vaccination for everyone,” Dr. Martin points out. “It reduces the potential for severe COVID, and we know it also reduces the risk of long COVID.” If you’re worried about autoimmune disease (say, because you have a family history of them), Dr. Martin says that’s one more reason to stay up-to-date on your COVID shots.

Biden ropes in 20 Indian-Americans in administration, 17 at key WH positions
Tumblr media
President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee to serve as Director of the Office of Management and Budget Neera Tanden (AP)
WASHINGTON: Less than 100 hours ahead of his historic inauguration, US President-elect Joe Biden has either nominated or named at least 20 Indian Americans, including 13 women, to key positions in his administration, a new record in itself for this small ethnic community that constitutes one per cent of the country’s population. As many as 17 of them would be part of the powerful White House complex. The January 20th inauguration, the 59th in all, wherein Biden would be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States is already historic in the making as for the first time ever a woman Kamala Harris would be sworn as the vice president of the country. Harris, 56, is also the first ever Indian-origin and African American to be sworn in as the vice president of the United States. It is also for the first time ever that so many Indian-Americans have been roped into a presidential administration ever before the inauguration. Biden is still quite far away from filling all the positions in his administration. Topping the list is Neera Tanden, who has been nominated as director of the White House Office of Management and Budget and Dr Vivek Murthy, who has been nominated as the US Surgeon General. Vanita Gupta has been nominated as associate attorney general Department of Justice, and on Saturday, Biden nominated a former foreign service official Uzra Zeya as the under secretary of state for civilian security, democracy, and human rights. “The dedication that the Indian-American community has shown to public service over the years has been recognised in a big way at the very start of this administration! I am particularly pleased that the overwhelming majority are women. Our community has truly arrived in serving the nation,” Indiaspora founder M R Rangaswami told PTI. Mala Adiga has been appointed as policy director to the future First Lady Dr Jill Biden and Garima Verma would be the digital director of the Office of the First Lady, while Sabrina Singh has been named as her deputy press secretary. For the first time ever among the Indian-Americans include two who trace their roots to Kashmir: Aisha Shah, who has been named as partnership manager at the White House Office of Digital Strategy, and Sameera Fazili, who would occupy the key position of deputy director at the US National Economic Council (NEC) in the White House. White House National Economic Council also has another Indian American, Bharat Ramamurti, as deputy director. Gautam Raghavan, who served at the White House in the previous Obama Administration returns to the White House as Deputy Director in Office of Presidential Personnel. Among Biden’s inner circle is his top confident for year Vinay Reddy, who has been named as director speechwriting. Young Vedant Patel all set to occupy a seat in the White House lower press, behind the briefing room, as assistant press secretary to the President. He is only the third-ever Indian American to be part of the White House press shop. Three Indian-Americans have made their way to the crucial National Security Council of the White House, thus leaving a permanent imprint on the country’s foreign policy and national security. They are Tarun Chhabra: senior director for technology and national security, Sumona Guha, senior director for South Asia, Shanthi Kalathil: coordinator for democracy and human rights. Sonia Aggarwal has been named senior advisor for climate policy and innovation in the Office of the Domestic Climate Policy at the White House and Vidur Sharma has been appointed as policy advisor for testing for the White House Covid-19 Response Team. Two Indian Americans women have been appointed to the Office of the White House Counsel: Neha Gupta as associate counsel and Reema Shah as deputy associate counsel. Also, for the first time in any administration, the White House would have three other South Asians in key positions. Pakistani-American Ali Zaidi as deputy national climate advisor White House; Sri Lankan American Rohini Kosoglu as domestic policy advisor to the Vice President and Bangladeshi-American Zayn Siddique: senior advisor to the White House deputy chief of staff. During the campaign, Biden had indicated that he would rope in a large number of Indian Americans. “As President, I’ll also continue to rely on Indian-American diaspora, that keeps our two nations together, as I have throughout my career,” Biden had said in his address to the Indian-American community during a virtual celebration of India’s Independence Day on August 15, 2020. “My constituents in Delaware, my staff in the Senate, the Obama Biden administration, which had more Indian Americans than any other administration in the history of this country and this campaign with Indian Americans at senior levels, which of course includes the top of the heap, our dear friend (Kamala Harris) who will be the first Indian American vice president in the history of the United States of America,” Biden said in his video address.

Love Jihad or Interfaith Marriage ?
One controversial topic that has been in the news off late has been the issue of Love Jihad. State Governments like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Haryana are looking to bring a Law against Love Jihad where according to them the boy is tricking the girl into a relationship and is then forcefully converting her to their religion. What we have seen in the Media and Social Media are extreme views. One side says there is nothing called as Love Jihad because every interfaith marriage is a personal choice of 2 individuals and the other side says that every or most of the interfaith marriages have led to forceful conversion of the girl's religion and then exploitation. The truth actually lies somewhere in between and for that we need to go into the history of the issue.
The first time we heard of this term Love Jihad was in the Uttar Pradesh bypoll elections of 2013 where Yogi Adityanath had brought this topic up. It didn't go down well with the people since it looked like he was trying to polarise and make it a Hindu Muslim issue which led to a horrible defeat for the BJP. After that we had the 2014 Lok Sabha elections which didn't have a mention of this issue as it was fought on the issue of development. Surprisingly, the next time we heard about Love Jihad was in Kerala where the Government said that Christian girls are getting forcefully converted and exploited. The interesting fact is the term Love Jihad was first coined in Kerala in the year 2009 but the media never highlighted it. The Indian Media's agenda to make it a Hindu-Muslim issue got thwarted when Christian Association for Social Action alleged Love Jihad being carried out against Christian girls. According to the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference Commission for Social harmony and vigilance there have been 4000 instances of Love Jihad between 2005 and 2012. The High Court had also asked to investigate cases where forceful conversions are taking place after marriage. Things got serious where there were cases of Christian girls being forcefully converted and were sent to the IS (Islamic State). These cases were confirmed by our intelligence agencies where 21 girls were sent in one batch to the IS in Afghanistan. There are cases of Nimsha alias Farima and Sonia Sebastian alias Ayesha who were sent to Afghanistan and trained for Jihad where both had requested the Indian Government to save them and bring them back to Kerala. Now more cases are emerging in other states as well including Maharashtra where NCW (National Commission for Women) Chairman Rekha Sharma had met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to discuss regarding the rise in cases of forceful conversions of girls.
Now knowing the history we can figure out that this is a very serious and sensitive issue. To completely deny it won't be right but at the same to brush everyone with the same paint isn't right as well. What we have seen on Media and Social Media is the right wing trying to term every inter faith marriage as Love Jihad which is not true. In fact inter faith marriages prove that our country is as liberal as any other country and one should celebrate that. So to use such an sensitive issue for political gains and counter the leftists won't be advisable. The leftists on the other hand want to live in denial that forceful conversion does not exist and that all interfaith marriages are done with consent of both sides which is also not true. It is a very serious and complex issue which concerns national security as well and it is best left to our Governments, Intelligence agencies and Courts to address this issue.
One needs to understand that forceful conversion after marriage is not just an Indian issue and the same has been seen in other countries as well for years. Whether it be in European countries, African countries and even in Asia this has been a common phenomenon. Look at our neighbour Pakistan where girls from minority religions are forcefully converted and exploited which is one of the reasons why the Indian Government brought CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) in order to give shelter to those girls in our country. This has been a global issue for quite sometime and I am glad there is a debate on this subject in India. To know more on the global impact of this issue I would request everyone to read the article of S Gurumurthy in Indian Express where he mentions scholars giving examples on the same subject for which I have shared the link below.

Rather than trying to make this issue about a religion one needs to see it as a women issue and address it in that context. Just like in the case of Triple Talaq, it was seen as a women issue rather than a religion issue because once it is made a religion issue then all we will see is sweeping remarks and politics done about a religion from both sides and we will miss the issue completely. It is good that Goverments are bringing these laws in order to protect women from being exploited but it is the duty of the opposition and the media to make sure that the ruling political party does not go overboard by making it a religion issue rather than a women issue.
For Indians, unity in diversity has always been our unique identity in the world. We have produced a Pranab Mukherjee, Abdul Kalam, Dr S Christopher, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Milka Singh and many others which shows what we are all about. There are some lumpen elements in our country who will continue to try to break the country and our society so it is our duty to make sure that we call them out regardless of their political ideology. When it comes to issues especially women we should all come together to give them the support they deserve regardless of their religion.
Jai Hind !!!
