Anyone remember Lick's restaurants?

Final post from this location, the interiors of the former Lick's restaurant.

Let's start from the beginning, from what I have heard there used to be a Beaver Lumber at this corner intersection which closed down and was demolished in 1984.

I'm not sure when the plaza and the two restaurants were built but the has a very 80s or 90s architectural style to it, so I would guess not long after the Beaver Lumber was built.

According to a Hamilton Spectator article from 2013 the first Lick's opened as an Ice Cream parlour in Downtown Oakville, which is interesting since this former Lick's which I visited was also in Oakville, just in a different location.  In 1984 the store was becoming a chain with many more restaurants opening between then and 2009 and at its peak, Lick's Homeburgers had 30 locations throughout Southern Ontario.  The company began to suffer after the 2008 financial crisis at the same time receiving growing competition from gourmet burger chains such as The Works.  In the 2000s they also switched from serving fresh burgers to a more generic frozen style burger that can still be found in stores today.  Several stores began closing starting in 2012 and by 2017 there were only two locations remaining, on in Parry Sound and another in Toronto.  I looked at some of the reviews from these Lick's restaurants and they were not by any mean s favourable, receiving an average of 2.5/5 stars.  My own experience having eaten at the Parry Sound location as recently as a year or two ago is not dissimilar to this.  After this Lick's location closed down sometime between 2011 and 2014 it became another chain restaurant known as Hwy 55 Burgers Shakes & Fries, this is an American owned chain restaurant and operated until May of 2016.  Then in July of 2016 Gazebo Burgers & Grill opened, it's weird because looking through their Facebook page it seems as thought when they first opened they had the same design as the former restaurant but with different branding and a slightly different menu.  I am not sure if Gazebo bought all of the decor and furniture from the Hwy 55 owner when they opened or if it was the same owner the whole time.  The restaurant had a 1950s theme with pink and teal colours and 50's decor throughout!  Then in October 2019 they reopened the restaurant with a slightly updated look, going for a slightly more modern look (as seen in the photos) mixed with the same 50s decor from before.  On November 1st the restaurant closed down with plans to reopen at a later date.

At the end of June 2021 the plaza, the Taco Bell and Gazebo buildings were torn down to allow for road widening at the intersection.

Selling Space and things I need to launch business

Once I start my business from home and it takes off, I am planning to rent a small shop in Downtown Oakville located around the residential neighborhood of Oakville with efficient transportation system and nearness to production resources. The place should meet my requirements: there is enough space for operations; no repairs needed; location is convenient – easily accessible by the locals; no issues with supply deliveries; available customer parking.

The biggest advantage is that there is no complicated machinery involved in the production and the space needed is minimal. The setting must include 3 main areas:

Selling Counter. There is no need for the large showcases to be installed. I will need just a corner with box sizes (0.250g, 0.500g, 0.750g, 1kg) and the space for the cash register

Dirty Kitchen and Pantry.There must be an average size kitchen with the stove – to melt ingredients, large stainless-steel counter with stainless steel bowls and pots. This area will be for preparing the product and storing the supplies.

Packaging Area. Here the chilled product will be cut and packaged according to the orders. The key equipment will be fridge to chill the product, stainless-steel counter for cutting the product and the display tall fridge for packaged products

Therefore, the selling space is very basic and easy to accommodate. The other issue is to negotiate the most suitable lease contract with the lessor, whether it is an owner or a real estate company.

Purchasing Products

All the products that are needed for the creation of my product are quite accessible and can be found in bulk supply shops or even local grocery shops. This is the beauty of having a business that does not require complicated and scarce ingredients.  Therefore, I am not expecting issues in this area.

The products needed are milk, cookies, butter, chocolate disks. These can be purchased at Walmart, Safeway, Costco, and Sprouts Farmer’s Market.

Because the ingredients for my products are so common, the sourcing in time will not be an issue. There are websites and online supplier platforms available. Today’s grocery stores can carry upwards of 40,000 items in a single store which benefits and guarantees my pantry being stocked. Because my business is connected to food, I needed to find out if I need to obtain certificate from Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). After completing Licensing interactive tool - Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, I received a conclusion that I do not need license according to Food listed in Schedule 1 of the SFCR (Cocoa Beans):

“You do not need a license to send or convey food from one province to another.

Where: Oakville Grocery’s girl’s toilets in Downtown Woodsboro What time: 1:32 in the afternoon, daylight

Early afternoon today Police were rushed to the horrific scene of yet another brutal murder in Woodsboro. The sight was so upsetting, it was said the witnesses have been offered therapy to deal with what they had seen. A young girl, only 19 years old was brutally murdered within the girl’s toilets of local Grocery store “Oakville Grocery’s Co” after seemingly escaping the killer in a fight for her life soon died in front of many in the middle of the store. The girl’s name is still to be revealed, however special Investigators were also rushed to the scene to analyse what had happened. 

Although we don’t have most of the information, a brief interview with the Investigators informed us that Police already have a suspect. After being stabbed through her abdomen, it appears that the girl had scratched her killer in the fight for her life as DNA was found under her fingernails as well as bloodied footprints matched that of a size 7 man’s boot. The Police are happy with the results of the investigation as they believe they may have already found the culprit behind this year’s Ghostface craze.

The suspect, Jensen Jones, 18, has been taken in for questioning.

Anyone remember Lick's restaurants?

Here are a few exterior photos of the former Lick's restaurant, as well as the plaza next door.

Let's start from the beginning, from what I have heard there used to be a Beaver Lumber at this corner intersection which closed down and was demolished in 1984.

I'm not sure when the plaza and the two restaurants were built but the has a very 80s or 90s architectural style to it, so I would guess not long after the Beaver Lumber was built.

According to a Hamilton Spectator article from 2013 the first Lick's opened as an Ice Cream parlour in Downtown Oakville, which is interesting since this former Lick's which I visited was also in Oakville, just in a different location.  In 1984 the store was becoming a chain with many more restaurants opening between then and 2009 and at its peak, Lick's Homeburgers had 30 locations throughout Southern Ontario.  The company began to suffer after the 2008 financial crisis at the same time receiving growing competition from gourmet burger chains such as The Works.  In the 2000s they also switched from serving fresh burgers to a more generic frozen style burger that can still be found in stores today.  Several stores began closing starting in 2012 and by 2017 there were only two locations remaining, on in Parry Sound and another in Toronto.  I looked at some of the reviews from these Lick's restaurants and they were not by any mean s favourable, receiving an average of 2.5/5 stars.  My own experience having eaten at the Parry Sound location as recently as a year or two ago is not dissimilar to this.  After this Lick's location closed down sometime between 2011 and 2014 it became another chain restaurant known as Hwy 55 Burgers Shakes & Fries, this is an American owned chain restaurant and operated until May of 2016.  Then in July of 2016 Gazebo Burgers & Grill opened, it's weird because looking through their Facebook page it seems as thought when they first opened they had the same design as the former restaurant but with different branding and a slightly different menu.  I am not sure if Gazebo bought all of the decor and furniture from the Hwy 55 owner when they opened or if it was the same owner the whole time.  The restaurant had a 1950s theme with pink and teal colours and 50's decor throughout!  Then in October 2019 they reopened the restaurant with a slightly updated look, going for a slightly more modern look (as seen in the photos) mixed with the same 50s decor from before.  On November 1st the restaurant closed down with plans to reopen at a later date.

At the end of June 2021 the plaza, the Taco Bell and Gazebo buildings were torn down to allow for road widening at the intersection.
