Texas Peaches and Watermelon Couldn’t Be Any Better Than They Are Right Now

Watermelon is a Texas Fourth of July classic, and you’ll find sweet, ripe melons bursting with flavor at most North Texas farmers markets, including Plano Farmers Market on the Municipal Avenue curve in Plano.

To spot the new Sunday market, look for the red tents. Artisan producers range from Heirloom Gourmet’s summer cucumber salad and One & Only Salad Dressing to Terra Sienna Grass Fed Beef. Rancher Jerry Helm, who runs his cattle on grass year-round in Montague County, will tell you precisely how to cook each cut.

Stubblefield Produce brings in Parker County peaches, at their height of sweetness and juiciness, to Plano Farmers Market.

Don’t forget handheld pies — baked, never fried — from Jami’s Pies. Baker Jami (pronounced Jamie) Bishop Fleming and sidekick Joe Ross make everything from scratch and use local ingredients when available, including luscious peaches right now.

Add a classy touch to munchies with the Amazing Dip Company’s Cameron’s Smoked Gouda Dip, a refreshing take on cheese and crackers with a long finish. By the time I got to the market, Marcus Wentrcek’s spicy version was sold out. The cheese dips are named for his 5-year-old son, Cameron.

Two produce sellers, La Esperanza Farm and Stubblefield Produce, mix local farm-grown fruits and veggies with imports. But West Coast cherries will never compete with the likes of Stubblefield’s Parker County peaches — perfectly sweet and juicy right now.

Jami Bishop Fleming and sous chef Joe Ross bake the pies from handheld to full-size at Jami’s Pies.

Bishop Elaine J.W. Stanovsky intends to appoint Rev. Karen Dammann as Pastor of Douglas Community United Methodist Church in Douglas, Alaska and Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Juneau, Alaska beginning January 16, 2019. Karen is already serving at Aldersgate and will be adding Douglas to make a two-point charge. Rev. Jason Cornish who is serving at Douglas as a part-time, bi-vocational pastor is being moved to Delaware in January by his job at the Federal Aviation Administration.
