TREKMATCH! # 514 - Discovery's "The Sound of Thunder" vs 1968's Night of the Living Dead
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
A group disparate strangers wind up hiding from the very hangry risen bodies of the recently deceased. There the human survivors fight amongst themselves until everybody's dead from screaming or zombie bite. It's a classic, obviously, though the final image of the police just shooting Ben, the Black lone survivor of the ordeal, on sight plays differently in 2020. Or actually, maybe it doesn't because this came out in 1968, after all. It's a shame for George Romero and his team that through a goof by the distribution company the movie accidentally immediately entered the public domain on release and they didn't make any money off it, though I supposed Romero can say his career exists because of the movie so he made money that way. It's also a shame for us because since the movie is in the public domain it's available everywhere to stream, but in dubious and variously terrible transfers!
GRADE: A
STAR TREK: DISCOVERY - "The Sound of Thunder"
After Saru has evolved into his new fearless self, Discovery chases the Red Angel to Saru's home planet. There they do some light Prime Directive violatin' between Saru's people and their predator overlords who've been executing them every time they reach space puberty. I'm no General Order Number One expert, but this seems like one of those times where it's "ok" to intervene, since it's a space faring civilization oppressing some nice farmers or whatever.
GRADE: A-
Victory to Night, so Trek is up 259-255!

Star Trek: Picard (S1E08) Broken Pieces Review
#StarTrekPicard (S1E08) uses Broken Pieces to put things back together again #Review
*SPOILERS*
A great many things become clear as “Star Trek: Picard” manoeuvres its characters and pieces for its first season endgame. Ironically, the episode called “Broken Pieces” is the one which starts to show how everything fits together.

But first, in depressingly customary form, we begin with another flashback – to fourteen years ago again – but this time it’s Narissa’s flashback as she…

TREKMATCH! # 403 - Discovery's "Lethe" vs 2020's Impractical Jokers: The Movie
IMPRACTICAL JOKERS: THE MOVIE
Four lifelong friends yadda yadda prank each other etc etc scenes of graphic stupidity blah blah, except this time it's in the movie theater. Essentially, if you know the show, it's more of the same live pranks and dares, but strung together with a road trip plot involving a Paula Abdul concert in Miami. None of the gags are especially better than the ones you'd see in the show except there is a different and more nervewracking dynamic when they're pranking country boys in rural Georgia as opposed to the usual Times Square tourists they do on TruTV 20 hours a day, and since the movie will soon be rerun into infinity on that channel I recommend just waiting for it there.
GRADE: C-
STAR TREK: DISCOVERY - "Lethe"
Some leftover Vulcan xenophobes half explode a shuttle Sarek is on, so he calls out across space to his stepdaughter Michael for help. Damn, even close to death and he doesn't want anything to do with Spock! Although the episode does show why Sarek was so angry Spock chose Starfleet over the Vulcan Science Academy. Meanwhile Admiral Cornwall shows up to tell Captain Lorca he's been a bit... different lately. Capital HMMMMM!
GRADE: B-
Victory to Discovery, putting Trek up 202-201!
