“And Put Away Childish Things” by Adrian Tchaikovsky
June 11, 2023 ~ Nataliya
“I just wanted to be the promised prince and heir to a magical kingdom,” he told the walls of his cell. “Is that so much? Is that bad of me? I mean, what did I do to earn this clusterfuck, precisely?”
There are portal fantasies (hello, Narnia — for those like me who haven’t read Narnia books, that’s the association that the wardrobe on the cover is apparently supposed to evoke), and there are anti-portal fantasies where the world behind the magical door isn’t all that hunky-dory (Lev Grossman’s Fillory). And then there’s whatever Adrian Tchaikovsky does here, with his off-kilter take on the portal fantasy set during the early pandemic months — what remains of the fantasy once the titular childish things have been put away and a bit of horror undercurrent comes into the story, with an eventual science-fictional flavor.
“He had his own problems, not least of which was discovering that not only was Underhill real, it was a bloody nightmare of epic proportions.”
This novella is rather a delightful mix of dilapidated fantasy setting and snarky reality, set in the shadow of lives full of wasted potential. The world through the portal – Underhill – is not a happy shiny Narnia place (“… childish things they hadn’t put aside when they grew up”), but neither is it a dark gritty setting. It’s a world bubble in strange decay, with quite a bit of odd creepiness there, the vibe of an abandoned playground just before full dark. Tchaikovsky pokes a bit of fun at the good old portal fantasy tropes here, yes, but with a bit of a thoughtfulness, skillfully and sometimes sneakily cynically, and overall in a weirdly enjoyable but twee-less way with the cuteness mercilessly stripped away.
“They were the usual sort of post-war kids’ stuff, born out of a world of rationing so that the young protagonists’ rewards for fighting giants or recovering stolen jewellery was often no more than a decent meal, which they were glad to get. They were ’50s nostalgia that the Baby Boom generation had grown up on, about another world that was green and magical and nice and constantly under threat by monsters both buffoonish and genuinely monstrous.”
I liked that Tchaikovsky grounded this book is present day reality by using the early days of Covid pandemic as the background for the “real world” part of the story. I haven’t quite seen this in my reading so far — and like it or not, this recent shared experience is not something we can pretend never happened.
Great read as usual, and yet again Tchaikovsky doesn’t disappoint..

My thoughts on AHS Double Feature E6 (Spoilers)
People in this town are insane as f.
GO COACH BESTIE!
I hate that i'm not american because all the characters this season only speak in pop culture references and methafors. I can't understand half the things Holden is saying.
Oh Harry, you're such a kind soul... i mean maybe, i think you lost your soul a few days ago when you treated your wife like trash.
I'm finally getting to understand Harry. He's just stupid and reckless.
"He wasn't bad, it was the pill!" "It was Doris fault, she wasn't talented" "He never meant to hurt people, you just don't understand how awful it is to not being able to use your full potential" I can see it coming. I get it tho, he's a DILF.
Alma calling Ursula a chicken bitch and Harry not reacting at all is just lovely. Great parenting skills.
Are the pale creatures eating Ursula? I don't think so.
That baby would be better in Belle's belly than under Harry's supervision.
Was this untalented/talented fight really necesary?
Leslie looking hot with that gun.
I KNEW THAT THE CHEMIST WOULD END UP TEAMING WITH URSULA!
Bye bye, Harry. You should've seen it coming.
Oh so now The Chemist and Ursula are fruity and they're raising the little devils together. This is gonna end well.
The characters evolution/development this season is awful.
The hustler joke wasn't funny, it was upsetting. Alma is a child.
Prodigy kid count your days.
That was some hell of a rushed ending. Very unsatisfying.
My thoughts on AHS Double Feature: Red Tide.
This is the first season i've watched weekly since Cult and it was kinda cool watching it that way. I was really excited about this season because of the cast and because everyone said it was very dark and very well written, well, i don't know about that.
Red Tide strong points were the score, cinematography, the aesthetic and the cast, it had some cool "social messages" and in some ways it felt really personal, it was upsetting and dark at times and i liked it, but the writing was not out of this world, most of the characters were annoying and awfully developed. It was very predictable and rushed and no, don't blame it on the number of episodes, i've watched limited series with 5 or 6 episodes and some of them are masterpieces. But it had its moments. it had a great premiere and episode 5 is in my top 5 of the best episodes in the AHS universe. I liked the tension at times, but it was messy and overwelming in a bad way.
Frances Conroy, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe and Evan Peters were the highlighst of the first half. Even tho Belle and Austin were villains, it wasn't hard for us to root for them, they were both very interesting and compelling and yeah, Evan might be playing the hot weird guy again but he does it so well and i kinda missed his particular voice. Same with Frances, the way she delivered her lines and how she made us empathize with Sarah was awesome.
We can't say a bad thing about Sarah Paulson's performance, plus she was playing Linda Tripp at the same time, no one is doing it like her, and Lily? She should be doing Oscar winning stuffs, the way she made us empathize with Doris in episode 5 only proves how much she loves what she does and how good she is at it, Doris might not be talented but Lily sure is.
Doris fate was one of the highlights of this half too, same with TB Karen's. The whole thing was very tragic and memorable and i really liked that.
I'm sure Sarah Paulson will be nominated twice next year (Lead actress (Linda) and supporting actress (Karen)) and i fear for Frances and Lily because they really deserve some awards, but horror is underrated and with the amoung of upcoming limited series this year, i don't see it happening anytime soon.
Finn Wittrock did really good as the lead and Leslie Grossman did great too but i'm kinda tired of her playing the same annoying bitchy character over and over again and i know it's not her fault. Lily and Finn have zero romantic chemistry, they could play friends or enemies or siblings but they aren't believable as a longtime married couple, mostly because Finn looks like he's on his late 20s.
Macaulay Culkin and Ryan K.A were amazing additions to the cast and i hope they come back for another season and i hope they play very different characters from the ones they got to play this season.
I don't have a lot to say about Billie, Adina and Angelica. Adina was doing great as always but they killed her off in episode 3 and i was expecting The Chemist to be darker and a more complex character.
I like upsetting, disturbing endings but i never got to connect with The Chemist or Ursula and it felt too rushed and even predictable. Cheesy at times, messy, kinda silly and where is the major plot twist? A very Murphy ending.
If you were expecting a redemption arc or justice at the end, i think you didn't understand this season.
I don't have high hopes on the second half but we'll see, right? I'm excited about Sarah and Lily playing historical figures tho.

This Witch Wave ep was really interesting for those interested in Jewish folk magic and “Jewitchery.”
I even teared up toward the end when Dori says:
I think that while there can be a lot of grief about the fact that for so many people whose cultures have adapted because of persecution, and have shifted in order to survive, that our ancestors hid these gems for us. And they hid them in the mezuzah, they hid them inside the letters of the Torah. They hid them inside the chamsah. All of these beautiful ritual objects, and the plants themselves, and even if we’re not in relationship with traditional or Rabbinical Judaism, there are so many ways to still access that and connect with it.

Ok guys... i didnt even know this was coming back. I didnt get a single info and i didnt even know what this should be about. I found out about this like 2 days ago and i saw a poster and i was like "COOOOOL ALIEEEEEENS" then i watched the episode and it looked like vampires??
After the episode i went to see at least the title and i read it will have 2 different storylines?? Maybe one will be about aliens?? I WANT ALIENS NOW.
Anyways i loved the first episode. I love the atmosphere. Everything is so gray in that city... not only the vampires. The city really gives off an haunted vibe. Just loved it. Plos the characters for now seems really interesting. I cant wait to see what will happen to him after he took the pill.
Lol i thought it was kind of funny that they gave to Paulson again a role where she has to cry and whine... i just love it.

American Horror Story Double Feature Delves Into New Motherhood Nightmares In ‘Gaslight’
https://ift.tt/2XoT3A5
This American Horror Story: Double Feature review contains spoilers.
American Horror Story Season 10 Episode 5
As the story picks up steam, American Horror Story taps into some pretty classic horror tropes yet again to enrich its story. One of the things that initially caught my eye about the series when it first hit the airwaves ten years ago was the way in which the show was clearly written by horror fans and went out of its way to reward horror fans with little Easter eggs. Maybe it’s a shot from a classic movie. Maybe it’s a snippet of a score. Maybe it’s a full-on genre rip. Take a little here, a little there, and make a horror stew.
One of the classic themes of the horror genre is the idea of the ‘hysterical’ woman, either pregnant or a new mother or otherwise less able to defend herself, getting used and abused by the people around her. “Gaslight” does exactly what it says on the tin; you can’t name your episode after one of the most used (and misused) ideas in plays, films, and television without telling everyone what to expect. In this case, as in most cases, American Horror Story delivers it straight ahead and with maximum power, nipping a shot from Nosferatu here and a scene from Rosemary’s Baby there. To paraphrase my favorite fictional horror writer and Darkplace star, Garth Marenghi, writers who use subtext are cowards. Red Tide leans in, pushing for more, and asks the important question.
What if the woman you were gaslighting was also turning into a blood-sucking quasi-vampire who also kind of wanted to eat her baby?
Doris’s story was never going to end well. The show isn’t called American Success Story, after all. Even the people who survive and thrive as a result of their experiences are immeasurably troubled by them for the rest of their lives. No one gets a happy ending, and it seems that no one in Red Tide is headed in the direction of a happy ending, either. Doris, the last, best hope for saving her family, finds herself beset on all sides by forces trying to lie to her, betray her, pressure her into doing things she doesn’t want to do. She’s forced to put herself at risk to protect her child from not only Mickey and TB Karen, but from people who are supposed to be on her side like Alma and Henry. It’s an unwinnable situation for poor Doris, who is trying to recover from giving birth while surrounded by people who are essentially enemies to her safety and sanity.
It’s a staggering betrayal that audiences have been waiting on, but poor Doris is taken aback by it from the very opening moments of “Gaslight.” Lily Rabe hasn’t had a ton to do this season aside from pretend to be pregnant and be a wet blanket for Henry and Alma’s drug-fueled artistic vampirism, so when she gets the ball in this episode, she runs with it in a beautifully committed physical and emotional performances, most of which is done while confined to a bed or trapped in a bathroom. The sad relationship between TB Karen and Mickey also continues to be sweet, yet a little salty, with Macaulay Culkin impressing and Sarah Paulson being her typically stellar self, leaning into all of Karen’s physical and emotional quirks and being able to act through her special effects makeup beautifully.

American Horror Story: Double Feature Season 10’s Muse Pill Confronts a Stark Truth About Creative Ambition

TV
American Horror Story: Double Feature Tackles Pill-Popping, Blood-Sucking Addiction
By Ron Hogan
Things go the way things are expected to go in Brad Falchuk and Manny Coto’s script, but that doesn’t make it any less sad. Mickey and Karen, in particular, were heart-touching given that both characters only had one way out of the situation they were in, and that was to compromise themselves to save themselves, either through prostitution or kidnapping or taking The Muse. Karen isn’t necessarily a likable character, but Paulson makes her sympathetic, and Culkin is able to bring some of his strange likability to bear on the character of Mickey. Even when he’s doing things that are unlikable, it’s hard to directly dislike him for them, because he’s trying, in his own manipulative way, to help out a loved one rather than for simple selfishness.
Alma, Henry, and Ursula deserve no such kindness. Alma is a child, and while she doesn’t know better per se, she knows better, and Ryan Keira Armstrong does a great job of walking that balance of manipulation and ignorance. Finn Wittrock also does well at playing Harry’s moral ambiguity through the bulk of the episode, only for him to turn full-on despicable once Doris takes The Muse and becomes one of the pill people. Ursula is just a terrible person, and Leslie Grossman revels in scumbag behavior throughout the episode, particularly in the scenes in which Ursula is attempting to hide her slimy nature.
Director John J. Gray does a skilled job with the actors, orchestrating a lot of dueling moods and behavioral shifts across the episode well. Given that everyone is different from where they started by the end of the episode, that’s no mean feat, and he doubles down on Doris’s weakness as she recovers by playing up the fact that she’s being drugged and lied into compliance by her greedy so-called loved ones. Gray also does a good job with the peculiar terrors of the birthing and newborn care process, with Rabe standing in for every sleep-deprived, anesthesia-doped new mother ably. Though, most people do have loved ones they can trust to care for their baby; Doris doesn’t get that privilege. Instead, she wakes up to horrors like her daughter gnawing on her little brother’s leg and her husband scheming behind her back to finish the house redesign job because he doesn’t believe in her talent.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
That Harry’s ultimately right about Doris’s mediocrity is merely insult after injury. The last person who could protect baby Eli is now out of his life, and he’s left to the mercies of a workaholic vampire, a vampire child with poor impulse control, and the most stereotypical Hollywood scumbag since Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder. Given that the Gardner baby is on the radar (and menu) of Bell Noir, that poor little baby is in serious trouble.

Here we are with American Horror Story 10x3. I am having so much fun with this season. And i absolutelly loved this episode.
Harry is an idio who lacks a backbone ffs XD. Like... whaddafuck? Even Belle and Austin shaw how useles and bad of a father he is XD. I loved that scene in the car.
Alma is a fucking monster. She is even worse than her father. I think she was a little monster inside even before everything happened. This just made everything come out lol. She is such a bratt. But it's so fun to watch her. I mean i am kidding. I know she is a kid and probably struggles more to fight urges and stuff like that but she acts like a total bitch.
Mickey is so sloppy. Like... i feel like he is one who wants the money and the fame but is not really ready to take on all the other things. But i like him... he is so cute and honest in his own way.
Ursula is a flipping QUEEEEN. She was like "I'm here bitches... let me see what we have here" and took on everything. She is a ruthless businnes woman with no shame and no shame... no anything XD. I just love her so much.
It was super interesting to meet the woman behing the black pills. i dont know if we will ever know more about how the pills are made but i hope we will see alot more of her cause her interactions with Ursula were the best lol.
Anyways... that ending?? WOW.
I loved how they made this thing risky for the pills people as well. They got the thirst but they arent stronger or anything. I just like this.
