i’d love to hear about performance art you’ve loved/hated/been unsure of over the years? hope you feel more energized soon <3
In general, I don't really like performance art because I find the act of watching someone like, perform a thing just inherently embarrassing. Like I find watching theater and dancing embarrassing. So I find watching performance art, or being in the space of performance art, super uncomfortable and hard to sit with. So most of the performance art I've had to engage with in person has been in the context of a critique or an exhibition by people I know.
Having said that, I do like Tanya Aguinega, I love Laakkluluk Williamson Bathory, I like Guadalupe Maravilla, I like Nick Cave a lot, I like Doreen Lynette Garner a lot- although, absolutely across the board, I like everyone's sculptures and installations more than I like their performative work lololol
I think my taste errs closer to the relational aesthetic side of things than the strictly performative? But mostly I just want to look at stuff in silence on my own.
I also think a lot about James Luna's Artifact Piece at the Museum of Man:
#went to an undergrad with a huge performance program and my graduate mentor is a performance artist#and yet#I think watching people do stuff is uncomfy sorry
