Awful

The sound of a hacking cough pulled me from my slumber. I rolled over and blindly patted the empty space in bed beside me. "Where's Yule?" I wondered until I heard the cough again.

I rubbed the sleep from my eyes as I walked to our apartment's living room, where I spotted Yule on the couch. He looked so small as he hugged his legs and rested his forehead on his knees. He didn't even hear you approach and startled as you sat beside him and rubbed his back.

"I'm sorry for [cough] waking you up."

I flashed him a pitying half-smile. "That's okay, baby. In sickness and in health, remember?"

"I feel awful," Yule whined miserably as he all but fell onto my chest when I opened my arms to beckon him over for cuddles. My fingers carded through his long hair in an effort to soothe him. I could feel the heat of his fever radiating off his body.

I grew concerned when I could both feel and hear his breath rattling in his lungs. "You're going to the doctor in the morning," I stated firmly, giving him little room to argue. Yule hates doctors and hospitals, so I was shocked when all I got in response was a weak nod. He must feel really bad.

He quickly fell asleep, and I didn't have the heart to move him. I slowly laid back to get comfortable and put him into a reclining position to breathe easier. I found myself jolting awake through the rest of the night to check on him.

When morning came, I eased myself out from behind him to get my phone and make an appointment with his doctor. It turned out that he had pneumonia, so I sent him straight to bed after we picked up his antibiotics from the pharmacy. It was hard to get lucid Yule to sit still, but I was able to bribe him with cuddles and potato soup - his favorite.

Thinking about how in don't look up the only times we see the police mobilized is to suppress civil unrest due to government failure and abandonment. It was such a minor background thing but that's what stuck with me the most.

Yule felt the mattress shift as his fiancée all but jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom. She didn't have enough time to close the door behind herself, so he clearly heard her retching. He groggily rubbed his eyes as he shuffled to the door behind her.

"Y'alright?" His words slurred together sleepily.

She groaned as she was hit by another wave of dry heaving. A line of spit stretched down from her mouth before she wiped it away with the back of her hand. Yule quietly padded over and sat next to her. She leaned her head on his shoulder, whimpering slightly as they both leaned against the tub on the cold floor. He rested his cheek on her hair in return and wrapped his arm around her shoulder, gently rubbing small circles on her arm.

"I can run to the pharmacy if you need anything," he said softly.

She nodded and cleared her parched throat. "Can you get me some gingerale?"

"Of course, love."

"And maybe...maybe a pregnancy test?"

Yule's hand stilled. He pulled back slightly to look down at his fiancée in disbelief. He was very awake now.

"Y- you think you may be-?"

She half-smiled weakly as she looked up at him. "We haven't exactly been careful, Yule," she replied, earning a nervous chuckle from her fiancé that quickly fell into serious silence. After a few beats, she asked, "Are you...are you okay with that possibility?"

"Wha- oh, yes!" Yule exclaimed, bringing his focus back to her. "Yes. So much yes. This...this is more than okay. I just...I can't believe I'm going to be a dad."

"Well, let's test first to be sure."

"Oh, right! I'll be right back." He excitedly scrambled to his feet.

She started to rise but was quickly remanded to the floor again by nausea. "I'll be right here."

Every single election, when I hear the millions of fucking ads, get tons of the flyers, I think to myself these people are spending billions of dollars that they could have used to save people but instead they're using it to try to gain more power. How does that ever make them good people? Think about that. I want to be the president so I can help save people but instead of saving people right now with my money I'm going to spend it on ads so people will know that I deserve to be president? You know what? I would vote for the person who didn't advertise at all and actually did save lives with their money. But that's never going to happen. Not even fucking Stein does that.

Don't Look Up (2021) is the juxtaposition of Armageddon (1998)

But only the former truly represents the actions of humanity. And here's why (an essay LOL)

Armageddon (1998) tackles how the world would handle a meteor hurdling straight to earth to destroy it. Don't Look Up (2021) handles the same issue. Except only the latter actually handles it realistically, considering how the world looks and behaves now (and probably even how a situation like that would realistically have been handled in 1998)

The funny part is that in Armageddon, the meteor is due to land within 18 days of them discovering it. This results in the entire world gathering their forces to try and do everything to destroy the meteor from hitting earth in order to save humanity.

In Don't Look Up, they have months between discovering the meteor and it hitting earth. And what do they do in that time? They initially do everything they can to deny it, and then they decide to try and turn it into a way to make money, in true capitalist fashion. And then they doom the entire earth because they, first of all did not take it seriously, and second of all did not react in time.

It's such a fascinating comparison, though. Armageddon is what we like to think of ourselves - what we like to believe humanity is and would do in times of a crisis. We like to paint ourselves the heroes, no matter how we got there or what happened in the past. Victors Justice is a term that describes this well (the winners dictate history and thus the way it is told). We have always been and will always be the heroes of the story.

Don't Look Up is what we would actually do, have done and continue to do even as we speak. It is the realistic portrayal of humanity. Ignore the issue, believe propaganda, and push it off until the meteor is literally hurdling straight towards us until we have nowhere to run.

And even then, you'll still have people refusing to believe in it, accept it or do anything about it (Covid and the genocides happening globally currently are excellent examples of the delulu state the world lives in)

The juxtaposition is interesting either way. Because does it represent how society and our self awareness has changed for the better? Or for the worse?

Were we always like this? Or did we become this?
