He’s still a lil goofball. It’s called Full Grown, and it is very dear to me. It is very soft and has a gentle ending. I originally called it “Mystic Breakdown,” but I’ve since made that the name of the series because I’ll be posting a second one focusing on Donnie on Sunday!!

Stuff I’m Looking Forward to in August

We are now deep into the Summer. No holidays this month, but here is what’s on my radar:

Movies:

Dreamin' Wild

This musical biopic is about brothers recording an album in the 70s and then the album finally gets discovered thirty years later. There’s a lot of musicians who have had similar experiences (Death comes to mind) but this is based on Donnie Emerson and his family. Opens 8/4.

Strays  

Alright, I admit a bunch of celebrities voicing dogs didn’t have me at first, but I’m looking forward to it because it’s directed by Josh Greenbaum, director of one of my favorite documentaries of the last decade Too Funny to Fail and the trailer got me laughing. Opening 8/18.

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah

Adam Sandler has been on a roll lately and in his newest starring / producing vehicle, his actual wife and daughters co-star in this bat mitzvah comedy. Netflix premiere on 8/25.

Neil Young Chrome Dreams

Recorded from 1974 to 1977, this Neil Young album was never released. In 2007, he released the sequel to the widely bootlegged album. Excited to see it’s official release on 8/11 (review coming soon).

Aerosmith Greatest Hits 

In 1980, Aerosmith released their Greatest Hits album filled with 10 hits from the 70s. It is one of their biggest selling releases (12 times platinum). It was re-issued in 1997 with more tracks. There have been other compilations since then, but this new deluxe edition of 44 tracks is coinciding with their upcoming farewell tour. Album drops 8/18 (review coming soon).

Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros Live at Acton Hall 

Recorded on Nov. 15, 2002, this benefit concert was one of the final live appearances of Joe Strummer before his death on Dec. 22, 2002. Especially noteworthy about this concert is that Strummer was joined onstage for some songs by his old Clash bandmate Mick Jones. In 2012, there was a Record Store Day release of this, but this marks the first official release on vinyl and CD and remastered. Album drops 8/18 (review coming soon).

Alice Cooper Road

Call this my Summer of Alice Cooper: in June I got to review his super group Hollywood Vampires’ live album, then I got to cover the re-releases of School’s Out and Killer, and just last week I saw Hollywood Vampires live in Boston. Now the King of Shock Rock is back with his 22nd solo album, dropping 8/23 (review coming soon).

Ahsoka

Rosario Dawson stole some scenes as Ahsoka Tano on The Mandalorian. Now the character is getting her own limited series taking place post-Episode 6 around the time of Mandalorian. Disney + premiere on 8/23

FAN EXPO Boston 

The annual Boston comic con hits the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Good news is that even with the WGA and SAG strikes, celebrities can attend and sign and even do some panels (as long as it’s not about struck work). This year’s guests include Henry Winkler, William Shatner, Hayden Christiensen, Jason Lee, Peter Weller, Robin Wright and more. The fun happens from 8/4 to 8/6.

My taste in media varies across everything, I love children’s cartoons, horror movies, angry songs about women in the world, Anime, indie movies, bright art and scratchy sketchbook pages. I love everything and anything, but I do have some favourites.

I love music that tells a story, such as Ethel Cains work, where you can follow a narrative and really feel what the singer is trying to get across. I love artists who use muted and mottled colours, creating a visually moody environment with their work. I love tv shows that start with hope and end in despair and I love films where nothing really happens, just a retelling of normal life.

I think a person takes inspiration from everything in their life and I’m a true believer of that everybody is just a conglomerate of their favourite things, with a personal spin on it. I’m a collage of everything and everybody surrounding me, everything has an influence and takes effect on what I do. With my art, everything I do is intentional, whether it’s using a different brush type, changing colours or adding text and backgrounds. Nothing I do artistically isn’t thought about before it goes onto the page, there’s always a thought process behind minute details.

Nona Carrol “Norris” Slaughter was born in San Angelo tx may 9, 1943 to George Jefferson Norris and Katherine lillibell ray.

She moved to midland in 1947 and thats pretty much where she spent the rest of her life. She didn’t always have the easiest life but she always made the best of what she had. Somehow she could make any house feel like a home. Nona loved spending time with her family. When you came for a visit you knew you would find her sitting at the dinner table with her cup of coffee or her sweet tea, doing her puzzles or sewing something up on her sewing machine. Life happened around the dinner table. I can’t imagine all the skipbow, Yahtzee and dominoes that were played sitting around that table. You will be greatly missed mom. We love you.

She is proceeded in death by many she will be over joyed to see but most notably is her beautiful daughter Laura “diann”Ervin We take comfort in knowing they will be together again.

She is survived by her son Jimmy Gregg and three daughters Beth Gregg, Karla Williams and her husband Ken, Tina Dawson and her husband Carter. 10 grandchildren 17 great grandchildren 2 brother Ronnie rains and Donnie rains and wife Sharon.

Graveside services to be held Tuesday September 24 @ 10am followed by a luncheon at First Baptist at 11:30.

Personal blurb: I have a playlist (are you sensing a theme) for when I'm feeling broken, or actually more for when my friends are feeling the way, and I pick songs to send them from it. For the aforementioned lyrics, this is one of them. I will be honest, the sound isn't totally my preference, there's something about the melody that doesn't reach me, at least, not now (music taste is an unreliable and morphic friend).

This is from the 'Juno' soundtrack, a movie I've loved for a long time, and the whole soundtrack is this wild and chaotic creature. The whole movie carries with it with this strange sense of reality that is so real it feels warped as a result. It is a wonderful movie, and the songs in it include such wonders as: 'Tire Swing' (also by Kimya Dawson), which I love for being that same kind of strangeness that makes the movie endearing.

'Anyone Else But You' by their band, The Moldy Peaches, which Michael Cera (who has unexpectedly beautiful and fun music sense, highly recommend the song 'Clay Pigeons') and Elliot Page covered.

'All I Want Is You' by Barry Louis Polisar which I love dearly for being one of the few songs I know whose meoldy fits the lyrics so exactly. Every time I listen to it, the into with 'If I was a flower growing wild and free/All I'd want is you to be my sweet honey bee' conjures that exact image in my head.

The Kinks' 'A Well Respected Man' which will always have a space in my heart for being one of those songs that embraces the drivel of daily life and makes it more. I love the energy and desperation of the song.

Belle & Sebastian's 'Piazza, New York Catcher' which has such a fun beat and lyrics.

Sonic Youth's version of The Carpenter's 'Superstar', which is fanatic and Sonic Youth gets extra points for being the band I do to when I need to feel, right next to System of a Down.

Cat Power's 'Sea of Love', and she is just wonderful, highly recommend her 'Crossbones Style'. She did some covers of Bob Dylan sons, too. Love her soft, intense style.

Lastly, 'I'm Sticking With You' by the Velvet Underground, my favourite version of which is an outtake on their album 'The Velvet Underground Loaded'. I could listen to that and 'Heroin' any time, any day, and get something new out of it.

These are just some of my favourites. The whole soundtrack is so fun for me to listen to, when I'm in a very specific mood. There are certain movie soundtracks where it almost feels wrong to listen to individual songs in it without listening to the whole thing, like the 'Garden State' soundtrack, or the one from 'O' Brother Where Art Thou', or 'Donnie Darko', or 'City of Angels' (which I actually don't like, but I loved the music in it). Or literally any movie that Michael Nyman, Harold Shore, and John Williams has composed in.

yoooo sick! i also play guitar, i've been playing for about four years now. i, too, could play bass in theory if my sibling hadn't snatched it lol (starting to suspect we might be the same person...)

question of the day! favorite album covers?

1) we are definitely the same person.

2) both my santas have the same brain… but its a tough question!! as an artist cover art is soooo important to me. i will absolutely judge a book by its cover! i could definitely go on and on about my favourites but i’m gonna leave a whole lot out. right now im reallyyy loving any of micheal hurley’s album covers i think his art is sooo fun and whimsical and it gives him such a unique brand. also im gonna post some art… soonish that is definitely very hurley inspired haha.

other ones that come to mind: songs of courting and complaint by peggy seeger, townes van zandt self titled + our mother the mountain are both very special to me (and also another thing i did art for haha), omoiyari by kishi bashi, remember that i love you by kimya dawson, nive sings by nive nielsen and the deer children, a lot of wilco albums but being there is very close to my heart and also i like the whole love deluxe, donny hathway self titled, most of zusha’s covers but especially kavana, lola vs powerman and the moneygoround by the kinks, and let it be by the replacements. i could go on!! i love album art :)
