📚Broppy CollegeAU | "Campus Days"
Part 7: Picnic Lunch
Tuesday, Week 4 of 16
This was a particularly special day for the college. Once a semester, the students who had botany classes or were members of the gardening club hosted a nursery day on campus. In front of the school’s cafeteria was a large quad, accompanied by tall, lush trees that shaded the grass. The event took place on this quad, it was popular for all kinds of affairs, including festivals and college orientations. On this day, the quad held the botany students’ nurseries, where they sold flowers, vegetables, seeds, and fruits that were all grown in the campus garden. It buzzed with life, and of course, Poppy had to be a part of it.
At the beginning of class, the professor was in the process of giving his lecture when his phone rang. He quickly pulled it out of his pocket to mute when he noticed who was calling him.
“Oh- excuse me, everyone, I must take this call. It’s my wife.” He sheepishly said, quietly hushing everyone while he stepped outside the classroom. Immediately, Poppy turns to Branch.
“BRANCH” Her voice boomed, Branch was startled and held his chest to feel his heart race, “YES, Poppy??” His voice cracked; his eyes darted around to see if there was any danger.
“Okay so, outside there is an event and I really want to go. If we have any time after class, can we pleeaasee peek at the booths set up?” She pleaded. Poppy’s hands were clasped under her chin as she pouted, her eyes looked sad as she held her gaze at Branch. All he could do was stare into her eyes and blushed, he couldn’t resist and held eye contact with her. For a moment, Poppy felt butterflies in her stomach, something was aching for more when she kept her eyes on him, almost like she wanted to kiss him again.
Unexpectedly, the professor ran back into the classroom; he was gathering all his belongings when he spoke up again.
“I’m so sorry everyone, I have to dismiss class early, my wife is in labor, and I need to meet her at the hospital!” The professor was frantically resetting the office part of the class for the next professor. When he left, the class cheered for him and congratulated him on his newborn troll.
After the commotion calmed down, all the students gathered their supplies, high-fiving each other for the sudden dismissal. Branch and Poppy had broken their gaze in the beginning, they were startled by the sudden announcement from the professor. Slowly, the two turned back to each other and gave each other a smug smile.
When the pair left their belongings in their locker, they both made their way to the event. Poppy was humming a tune from the movie “In the Heights” and shimmied to the melody. Branch couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight, she was swinging her hips in a rhythmic motion, her feet stepped to a familiar choreography. No one else around to see.
“Carnaval del barrio~” She was ahead of Branch, quietly singing the chorus of the song.
“Carnaval del barrio~” She turned around to stop Branch from walking any further, snaked her hands into his, and laced their fingers together. Her singing slowly escalated in volume and sang the acapella.
“Carnaval del barrio~” Poppy swayed her hips side to side with each step. This enticed Branch to join in.
“Carnaval del Barrio~!” Her voice went up a note, she felt him quickly move her left hand on his shoulder and held her by the waist. Branch joined in to sing.
“Alza la bandera la bandera Dominicana~” In unison they sang, Branch mirrored Poppy’s steps and swayed his hips with her, keeping her secure in his grasp.
“Alza la bandera, la bandera Puertorriquena~” He gently spun them both, their bodies were close in contact, and their hips connected.
“Alza la bandera, la bandera Mexicana~” As if the music was playing in real-time, they both continued to sing along. Branch brought Poppy closer to himself, her right leg in between his legs, swaying to the beat. They felt the music in the air.
“Alza la bandera, la bandera-” He dipped her with his right leg once.
“La bandera- “, He dipped her a second time.
“La bandera- “, He dipped her a third time.
“La bandera~”, He dipped her a fourth time, bringing her back up one last time.
“Alza la bandera!” Poppy held Branch’s right hand as she let him spin her, before he tugged her back into his arms, dipping her one last time.
“HEY!” They chanted the last lyric, and the couple stared at each other, out of breath. Poppy was enchanted by this, she never thought that he would join her in the song. Branch took this opportunity and kissed her on her cheek, overlapping the corner of her lips. “I love ‘In the Heights’, it’s one of my favorite musicals.” He grinned, bringing her back up on her feet, and walked away.
Poppy was stunned, Branch had kissed her on the cheek. She felt her cheeks deeply redden and held her hands on her face, feeling the heat radiate off her.
“Are you coming to the event or am I going by myself?” Branch shouted; he was 10 feet away when he realized that she wasn’t moving. This brought Poppy out of her trance, and she faced him.
She smiled and touched the spot he kissed; the feeling of his lips lingered on her skin. “I’m coming~!” In a sing-song voice, she responded, skipping her way next to his side and linked her arm with his, walking together to the quad.
--
Once they were at the quad, they both browsed the booths together. One row had vendors selling all kinds of flowers that ranged from decoration, food, herbs, and spices. On the next row was a lineup of vendors selling makeup and accessories made of dried flowers, one booth caught Poppy’s eyes and she made a B-line to them. When Branch caught up to her, he saw a tent filled with handmade baskets and blankets, they were made using materials on campus, even from the wool of the barn sheep.
Poppy was admiring all the different baskets they made, but Branch had his eyes on a large square blanket. It was a light pink and strawberry color checkered blanket, large enough to sprawl out on if he wished. The texture was dense enough to keep him warm but also keep water from seeping through, the blanket was only half an inch thick.
“I’ll buy this one please.” He waved to the vendor and pulled out his wallet to pay in cash, leaving the leftover to tip. Poppy walked up behind Branch to see what he had bought, only to feel him plop the blanket into her arms, neatly rolled up with a bow to secure it.
“Ohhhh~ This is nice! It feels soft and dense, this would be perfect for a picnic!” She giggled, she rubbed a corner of the blanket in between her fingers to admire the craftmanship.
“It’s for you.” Branch warmly said, he smiled and stuffed his wallet back into his pocket.
“Wait what? You bought this for me?” Poppy’s eyes widened at his statement, her heart skipped a beat, and she held the blanket closer to her chest. She seemed unsure and waited for his response.
Branch simply nodded, “Yup, it reminded me of you and your vibrant personality.” A blush crept up on him, his confidence was depleted after that kiss on the cheek he gave her.
Poppy felt butterflies in her stomach, she was flattered at the gift and now she knew exactly what to do to pay it forward.
She gave him a toothy smile, “Thank you Branch, I know exactly what we can do for lunch!” She excitedly danced in her spot, her feet quickly tapped on the grassy floor of the tent, and she quickly grabbed his hand.
“Thank you!” She beamed at the vendor before she dragged him outside.
--
Branch was tasked with setting up a spot away from the event. He found a nice, shaded area, it was secluded, and the music could still be heard faintly in the distance. After he laid out the blanket, he sat down in the middle with his shoes off. He listened to the breeze brush the trees and leaned on his hands behind him, he felt relaxed and closed his eyes.
Poppy came to their spot after 10 minutes. She brought chicken katsu bento boxes in a bag, hanging from her left arm, and two sodas in both of her hands. She stopped from a short distance to watch Branch, he was peacefully enjoying the moment, and this was a sight she cherished in her heart. Something about his resting face made her heart beat a bit harder, and the sudden urge to kiss him came up again. Poppy shook her head and mentally kicked herself for thinking of something ridiculous. To keep herself from imagining such scenarios again, she rustled the bag in her arm to bring Branch’s attention to her. Branch opened his eyes and made eye contact with Poppy, he scooted over and patted the spot to his left, it was free from any sun peeking through the leaves.
Quickly, Poppy carefully set down the bag of food and sodas. She sat down to his left, opened the bag to reveal their lunches, and passed his soda to Branch.
“Thank you for the food, you really didn’t have to buy me lunch.” He hummed, slowly opened his bento box, and slipped the chopsticks out of their paper wrapper. Poppy poured her katsu sauce over the meat and opened her canned soda.
“It’s a thank you for the gift, it really means a lot to me that you thought of me Branch.” She smiled and kept her eyes on her food, avoiding eye contact to suppress her urge to kiss the troll again, he just looked so sweet.
Branch looked at her, watching her prepare her food and stuffing the largest piece of chicken in her mouth which made him laugh.
Poppy reacted quickly and stared at Branch, “What’s so funny?” she said with her mouth full, still chewing the meat.
He laughed harder and held his mouth to stop himself. “It’s just- “ He chuckled, “You look like a hamster when they stuff all those seeds in their cheeks!” He stifled his giggle. Poppy rolled her eyes and pouted, she swallowed her food and began, “I do not look like a hamster!! Hmph!” She pouted again, turning her face away from Branch.
His laugh trailed off with a satisfied sigh before he reached over to cup her face. Slowly, Branch brought Poppy to face him again.
“Awe~ It’s just that you looked so cute with your cheeks stuffed with food!” He playfully teased her, squished her face, and smiled at her to cheer her up again. Poppy loosened up quickly and gave him a side smile, she softly pushed his face to hide her flustered cheeks.
Branch giggled and let go of her face, when he looked at her again, he noticed something.
“Hey, wait, you got some sauce on your chin.” Quickly, he used his thumb to wipe the sauce off her face and unintentionally brushed her bottom lip. Poppy froze in her spot, she let him wipe off the sauce and waited for him to turn back to his food. Internally, she was screaming and squealing like a fangirl who saw her bias on stage. She held back the urge to kick her feet and stuffed rice in her mouth again before she squealed externally.
Branch blissfully went back to eat and never saw her reaction.
--
After their lunch, Poppy felt energized and ready to get back to her adventures. On the other hand, Branch felt a food coma kicking in, he was never good at staying awake after a hearty meal. He began to nod off while Poppy went on a rant about the price of paint.
“Hey Poppy, I’m really sorry to cut you off during your rant but-“ He covered his mouth when he yawned, “ I think I’m being hit by a food coma.” Branch patted his stomach and lazily blinked at her. Immediately, Poppy had an idea. She moved further away from Branch and patted her thighs. “You can use me as a pillow if you’re sleepy, I can wake you up before your class starts.” She eagerly said she loved it when her friends slept on her, she felt useful and closer to them, perfect for bonding!
“Thanks, Poppy.” Branch didn’t hesitate and removed his cardigan. Carefully, he laid his head on Poppy’s legs and used his sweater as a blanket. Poppy gently brushed his hair with her fingers, she delicately gave him a head massage and instantly put Branch to sleep.
After 5 minutes, Poppy had gotten lost in thought. She couldn’t help but feel this flame in her heart, she knew that she was developing feelings for her friend. Normally, she would confess right away at the first feeling of affection, but she didn’t want to scare him away. Her fingers traced shapes on his forehead and earned herself a sleepy smile from him.
Her eyes trailed from his hair to his eyes, then to his ears, and finally to his lips. Branch’s mouth was slightly parted. Poppy wondered, ‘What did it feel like to kiss him?’ She remembered the kiss she gave him on the cheek, only she focused on the corner of his lips she ‘accidentally’ felt. She blushed and remembered how soft they felt, she touched her lips and reminisced. Slowly, she leaned down to inch closer to his lips. She hesitated and thought, ‘This is wrong’ Then she moved up to his forehead, gently kissing his temple, letting her lips linger to embrace the feeling.
He smelled amazing, this time he embodied a green apple-like scent, sweet and fresh. She sat back up to enjoy the moment. Time passed and it was finally time to wake up Branch for his next class.
She gently caressed his cheek and softly called his name. He slowly blinked awake and looked up at Poppy, the sunlight made her glow. Butterflies were a constant recurrence to Branch.
“It’s time to wake up sleepy head.”

RECO OF THE WEEK!
Dominicana by Angie Cruz
Synopsis:
"Fifteen-year-old Ana Cancion never dreamed of moving to America, the way the girls she grew up with in the Dominican countryside did. But when Juan Ruiz proposes and promises to take her to New York City, she has to say yes. It doesn’t matter that he is twice her age, that there is no love between them. Their marriage is an opportunity for her entire close-knit family to eventually immigrate. So on New Year’s Day, 1965, Ana leaves behind everything she knows and becomes Ana Ruiz, a wife confined to a cold six-floor walk-up in Washington Heights. Lonely and miserable, Ana hatches a reckless plan to escape. But at the bus terminal, she is stopped by Cesar, Juan’s free-spirited younger brother, who convinces her to stay.
As the Dominican Republic slides into political turmoil, Juan returns to protect his family’s assets, leaving Cesar to take care of Ana. Suddenly, Ana is free to take English lessons at a local church, lie on the beach at Coney Island, see a movie at Radio City Music Hall, go dancing with Cesar, and imagine the possibility of a different kind of life in America. When Juan returns, Ana must decide once again between her heart and her duty to her family."

When do you need to put el/la before a noun and when don’t you? I understand telling whether a noun is masculine or feminine, and I know that you use el/la before a noun when “the” is in the sentence. But I have had sentences in my studies that don’t use “the” and want el/la and I’ve had sentences that don’t use “the” and don’t want el/la
You’re generally going to be using the definite article more than you aren’t.
When you’re talking about concepts, things in general, body parts, days of the week, hours of the day, possession, titles, times when you would use “the” in a sentence in English for the most part, times when you’re dealing with multiple nouns at once...
There are also some countries and cities where you would use articles, but most of these have a noun in the name; los Estados Unidos, la República Dominicana or things like that. There’s also El Salvador though that one is a little more particular because if you had the preposition a you’re normally taught that a+el or de+el turns to al and del, but it would be a El Salvador or de El Salvador because proper nouns
There’s some other more complicated things about articles and I could go into it but it’s more situational and it makes more sense in context. Like there are times when you can use el with verbs to mean “the action or result of a verb” like escribir es fácil pero el hablar no lo es which is “writing is easy but the speaking (part of it) is not” and some other things like that
There are also titles where you don’t use an object when talking to someone, but you would if you were talking about them. That’s the basic ones like señor, señora/señorita, doctor/doctora, profesor/profesora, jefe/jefa
It’s difficult to say exactly since it’s something you just sort of get a feeling for as you go, but you use them more often than not.
There are times when you can use indefinite articles [un, una, unos, unas] instead but they’re still articles so most of the same rules apply.
Times when you don’t normally use articles:
When you’re talking about languages as a direct object; aprendo español, hablo inglés, estudio ruso and so on
You don’t use articles in tener expressions though the nouns by themselves would often use articles.... tengo hambre “I’m hungry”, tengo sed “I’m thirsty”, tengo sueño “I’m sleepy”... but there’s a difference between something like tengo suerte “I’m lucky” and tengo la suerte “I have (the) luck/fortune”
You also don’t usually use articles when discussing symptoms you’re having, but you would if you were describing more about a particular symptom... tengo fiebre “I have a fever” and then using la fiebre to talk more about it specifically, or tengo dolor de cabeza “I have a headache” and then el dolor to talk about the “pain” itself
You don’t normally use articles with months of the year particularly with prepositions like en, durante, and hasta... en enero, en agosto... unless you’re talking about a specific month of the year like el febrero pasado “last February”
You don’t often use articles in recipes when listing ingredients; una cucharada de jengibre molido “one tablespoon of ground ginger”.... but you would (probably/generally) use an article when actually talking about it in the recipe: añade el jengibre con el azúcar y la sal “add the ginger with the sugar and the salt”
There are certain nouns that are compound words where you’d use one article but omit any others; for example la silla is “chair”, las ruedas is “wheels” but la silla de ruedas is “wheelchair”. Other examples would be things like la caja de música “music box”, or el guante de boxeo “boxing glove”
You don’t use articles when talking about professions, religious affiliation, or for describing someone’s general mood/philosophy... es abogado/a “they’re a lawyer”, es budista “they’re Buddhist”, es optimista “he/she’s an optimist”
You don’t often use articles when you’re talking about things as categories, and you don’t tend to use articles when you’re listing things from a category.
You do when you’re talking about specific items though. You also use articles when talking about items as concepts.
En el taller hay muchas herramientas como sierras, clavos, martillos y otras cosas. Necesito el destornillador que está en la caja de herramientas. = In the workshop there are many tools like saws, nails, hammers, and other things. I need the screwdriver that’s in the toolbox.
Anyway I’m pretty sure there aren’t many hard and fast rules. You just kind of get a feel for it and do your best but I’ll include the resources I know of:

Here is last week’s top 3!
THIS IS THE LAST TOP 3 QUARANTINE PEOPLE!!! WE MADE IT!!! They are coming back!!! We still don’t know a precise date, but it should be soon, sometime next week I suppose!!! So yeah, very excited!!!
Stitches (Flavio’s version)
Dime Que Me Quieres (Anaju’s version)
Lovefool (Eva’s version)
Happy (OT 2020)
3. LA GOZADERA - NIA
youtube
I don’t know why, but everytime they pick a reggaetón song, they change the lyrics lol, the number one pick is also of this song and it also changes the lyrics (I suppose it’s because they are really known?). Anyways, here is the original song, one of the few reggaetón songs I actively like! Also, I love Geography so of course I’m gonna like a song about countries (also that Canarian flag!!!! I also love flags!). So yeah, I’ll leave the lyrics here, they are pretty straightforward, basically just naming latino countries + Canary Islands which are pseudo-latin tbh, they even have really similar accents:
Canarias confirmed it to me
(Nia is here!)
Puerto Rico gave it to me
Dominicana replied
(lei lerei lei lerei ohh)
And you and me are from the Caribbean
Canarias confirmed it to me
Puerto Rico gave it to me
Dominicana replied
(lei lerei lei lerei ohh)
And you and me are from the Caribbean
Stuff is rough
Stuff is divine
But with Honduras, Chile with Argentina
Panama brings the zambomba,
Ecuador the bilirubin
And Uruguay with Paraguay,
Brothers to Costa Rica.
Bolivia is coming
Brazil is on their way
The world is getting on board
To the latinos’ party!
Canarias confirmed it to me
And the arroz con habichuelas
Puerto Rico gave it to me
(ay, how yummy!)
Dominicana replied
With Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela
And you and me are from the Caribbean.
Let’s go Guatemala, the party is waiting for you
Call Nicaragua, El Salvador sneaks through.
I sing it from Canarias,
And the world learns about it
If you are an islander
Bring out your flag!
Canarias confirmed it to me
And the arroz con habichuelas
Puerto Rico gave it to me
And the tambora merenguera
(Dominicana replied)
With Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela
And you and me are from the Caribbean.
(What you say?)
I bring you a rumba from my land
Keep dancing, don’t you stop
Bring out your flag to the street in this dance
Everything goes!
Colombia, Panama, Venezuela and Ecuador
Argentina, Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Salvador
And if you want to ask where I am from
I’m a Canarian with a lot of taste!
Waaaater!
2. HAY ALGO EN MÍ - MAIALEN:
youtube
I love this girl so much. And this song is so amazing, it fits her perfectly. It’s from an OT 2017 contestant, Miriam Rodríguez (my favourite from that edition!!!), this was her first single and it talks about female empowerment, I have to put the original song cause it’s so fucking amazing. Anyways, this video is so beautiful, it basically shows her journey through music, she has a group and had making music for years before entering OT, but she has talked about how they always struggled with money and had it really tough. Also, the ending bit is the last story she posted before entering OT 💔 She deserves the world, honestly.
1. LA GOZADERA - GÈRARD:
youtube
If Nia is the winner of OT, Gèrard is without any doubts, the winner of this OT in Quarantine bit. Like, he’s amazing??? And his creativity??? Ugh I love him (salvar Gèrard cabrones). Anyways, we have a Collab in this video!!!! With Roi Méndez, from OT 2017, the funniest of the edition, and also, he has one of the most solid albums from that edition (go listen to it, it’s called “Mi Lógico Desorden”, here is one of his singles, “Plumas”). Anyways, the lyrics are super referencial to OT, and there’s too much to cover, so I’ll explain everything under the cut. Before I go onto it, though, let me explain the collab and the names you see at the beginning, “blastoide ft sapoconcho”, cause it’s fucking hilarious. I’ve already talked about the Blastoide thing, it was the name of Gèrard’s tortoise; but the “sapoconcho” stuff is associated to Roi. During one gala, the presenter asked Roi on a whim to say something in Galician on a whim, as he is Galician, and he said “sapoconcho”. When they asked what did it mean, he said “turtle”. The whole absurdity of that situation is what made it hilarious, and from there on Roi was associated with the sapoconcho, holding a turtle plushie during one performance, and even having as a Christmas present a giant inflatable turtle that they had in the academy just lying around. So, of course, the two people connected to turtles / tortoises from OT HAD to collab lol. Anyway, let’s go to the lyrics!
Naiomi confirmed it to me [In the original song they say “Miami”, so they basically fused the name of the director of the academy, Noemí Galera, with Miami. The funny thing is, the fandom calls her Naiomi on Twitter kinda mockingly, so it’s either a hilarious coincidence, or they did it on purpose]
Hey
Operación Triunfo
Tinet Rubira gave it to me [That guy in the pic is Tinet Rubira, who is the director of the company that makes OT, basically the boss of everyone. He also is mocked A LOT]
Hey yes!
Tell him Jerry [I don’t know why but I find how Roi calls Gèrard “Jerry” hilarious]
And Mamen corrected it for me [Mamen Márquez is the vocal technique teacher and also is a professional vocal coach, she makes absolute wonders with the contestants’ voices, they even call her “Mamen Potter”]
And you and me are from Ceuta [Gèrard is from Ceuta]
And the gozadera was formed [Idk how to translate “gozadera”, it kinda means like “the pleasure place” or something like that]
Naiomi confirmed it to me
I can cross the catwalk [in the Galas there’s a catwalk to get onstage, and everybody who isn’t nominated at the end, gets to “cross the catwalk”]
The judges gave it to me
And I was always out of tune
Manu Guix tuned it for me [Manu Guix is the musical director]
With Laura Andrés I get it first try [Laura Andrés is another one of the teachers that help them with the songs]
And you and me are from Ceuta
Stuff is really tough
Mamen is divine
She tells me than in the voice
I have a mute
Our hymn in the Academy
Is “Díselo A La Vida” [Idk if I’ve talked about this before, but each edition there’s a hymn that defines them, normally they compose it together, but this year is just Rafa’s single, “Díselo A La Vida]
We are like no one else
From the party we get hyped
Capde is coming [Joan Carles Capdevila, “Capde” for short, is the music theory teacher, and also one of the teachers that help them with the songs]
Vicky is on her way [Vicky Gómez is the dance teacher, the one who prepares all the coreographies]
The world is getting on board
To the triunfitos party! [People who participated in OT are usually called “triunfitos”]
[that scary looking man is Manu Guix lol]
And the gozadera was formed
Naiomi confirmed it to me
I can cross the catwalk
Roberto pointed it out for me [Roberto Leal is the presenter of the galas, he’s the man that appears at the end of the line]
When I moved I was a nerd
And Vicky danced it for me
With Manu, Capde, and Laura the first one
And you and me are from Ceuta
(Hey, I’m Galician, brother)
The sticker in the casting
Naiomi sticked it to me [that woman is Noemí Galera]
I had a nasal voice as a trademark
And Mamen corrected it for me
And I was always out of tune
Manu Guix tuned it for me
(how does that Manu Guix tune tho!)
(Guix)
And you and me are from Ceuta
Come on Iván Labanda [Iván Labanda is the acting teacher]
Eirian is waiting for you [Eirian James is the English teacher]
Call Natalia [Natalia Calderón is the voice and movement teacher]
Vilallonga sneaks in [Andrea Vilallonga is the appearance teacher]
Mario and Cristian are here [Mario and Cristian are the urban dance teachers]
And Cesc learns about it [Cesc Escolá is the fitness teacher]
If you are a triunfito
Get your flag out
And the gozadera was formed
Naiomi confirmed it to me [That’s Noemí, here you can see her better]
I can cross the catwalk
The judges gave it to me
And I was always out of tune
Manu Guix tuned it for me
With Laura Andrés I get it first try
And you and me are from Ceuta
Naiomi sticked it to me
(the sticker in the OT casting)
And Mamen corrected it for me
Manu Guix tuned it for me
And you and me are from Ceuta
Roi Méndez [it’s funny cause the original song was made by Henry Méndez, so same surname!]
Tell them Jerry
Yeah
For all the people in the world
of life and love
Gèrard Rodríguez
And that was all, I’m excited for what’s gonna happen next week!!!!

*****
Peeta entered into the smoky club for the bachelor party. This party atmosphere wasn’t his scene anymore but he was duty bound to come. Gale ‘dark and broody’ Hawthorne was getting married to Peeta’s best friend ‘bright and chirpy’ Delly. Everyone was shocked when they announced they were a thing. There’d even been a bet floating around as to how long it would take Gale to break up with Delly. It wasn’t Gale who tried to break it off with Delly though, it was his best friend Delly who walked away from Gale.
Peeta had never in his entire life seen Hawthorne break down and cry. Hawthorne pursued Delly like a love sick puppy. Delly relented and went out with Gale again and as a result, Peeta became by default a groomsmen.
Peeta slipped his hands in the pocket of his dark jeans, he looked around at the festive place. It wasn’t a normal ‘club’ persay as this was a destination wedding and the actual club was inside of the all inclusive resort. He could see the waves crashing on the beach. He had to admit to himself this was a beautiful spot in the world. La Republica Dominicana was gorgeous.
“PEEEEEET!!!”
Peeta flinched at his name being screeched out like a drunk cat in the back of an alley by his other good friend Finnick. Peeta rolled his eyes heaven ward when he saw Finn come around the corner.
Finnick stumbled forward, a plastic coconut in his hand and a flower crown in the other. “Bienvenissso.”
“Finnick you do realize we’re no longer in college, and not frat boys, right?”
They both attended school down south. Finnick was in his junior year when Peeta became a pledge at the Frat Sigma-Beta-Panem house. Finnick took Peeta under his wing and helped him get over his shyness. When Finnick graduated their friendship grew. Finnick was now a married man, with a two year old.
“This is a destination wedding in Le Republica day San-toe Doming-mango. Annie is out with the girls whooping it up. We hired a nanny who knows to not disturb us tomorrow morning, so tonight we party like it’s 1999.”
Peeta frowned. Finnick was three sheets to the wind. Finnick was of Cuban descent and could speak Spanish except when he was drunk.
“Where are the other guys Finn?”
Finnick grinned wickedly, “This way.”
Peeta was pulled deeper into the club. Gale was holding court with Darius and Thom. The music was loud, the table was littered with half-filled glasses and empty shot glasses. Thom, the most serious of all of them, was drinking from a bottle of champagne. Peeta had shown up late on purpose, he didn’t want to get drunk. Someone had to corral these four idiots.
“SHOTS!” Finnick cried.
“SHOTS!” The others roared.
It was like a magic show, a waitress appeared with a tray full of shots. She eyed Peeta, her eyes traveled from the top of his head to the crotch of his pants as she licked her lips. Nope, Peeta thought, as he took the shot glass, he wouldn’t be getting drunk .
Two hours later Peeta sat with his head on the table. The waitress came by and put her hands on his shoulders, before they slipped to his chest. “Eres guapo, y tienes el cuerpo de Chris Evans.”
“Captain America?” Peeta slurred, he couldn’t feel his feet. He wondered where they had gone.
“Es verdad, el tiene un cuerpo hermoso, como el de Capitan America.” A sultry voice said from Peeta’s side. He looked up to see the hottest woman he’d ever set eyes on. She had eyes the color of molten silver. Her long tresses fell around her like a heavenly drape. Peeta wanted to gobble her up but he couldn’t put into words what he was feeling. He couldn’t even feel his tounge.
“I’m sorry madame is he yours?” The waitress asked.
“Si,” the hot woman said. ”He’s mine.”
Peeta grinned when she said he was hers, he was going to go home with her!
“Lucky.” the waitress smiled and walked away.
“Some women!” The hot woman growled. “Peeta, I’m here to bring you back to our hotel room.”
“What’s your name?”
“Man, you are out of it,” she chuckled. “Katniss.”
“You’re the hottest girlfriend I’ve ever had!”
“Peeta, I’m your wife!”
Peeta gasped at her announcement, a shot of pure happiness blazed right through him. “Oh my god! THAT’S AMAZING!” He fist pumped the air.
Katniss laughed. “Come on loverboy.”
She looped her arm around his middle. Peeta willingly followed.
“You’re amazin’…”
“As amazing as that hang over you’re going to have in the morning big boy.” Katniss whispered, gently placing a kiss on his forehead. She led him outside. Sea air filled his lungs. He looked around at the collection of women with his friends by their side.
“Good you found them,” Katniss said. Peeta was fascinated with her hair. He picked up a strand of it and sniffed it.
“I found Gale dry humping a bush,” Delly grunted as Gale sang into her ear.
“Thom was slumped by the side of the building!” Madge stood with Thom propped up against a sign post.
“I’ve got Darius!” Jo said towing an inebriated Darius. He had no shirt and he had Jo’s lipstick stamped on his chest. “Don’t ask,” Jo’s lipstick was smeared.
“I found Finn in the men’s bathroom,” Annie said pushing Finnick’s hand away from her boob.
“Well ladies let’s get our men back to the hotel,” Katniss said.
Peeta walked with Katniss to their hotel room, when she went to remove his shirt he giggled. “That tickles.” He stepped out of his pants, just looking at her was making him hard.
Katniss looked down at him, she sighed and muttered. “Too bad you’re high as a kite right now.”
Peeta grabbed her hand and pulled her to him. “You smell nice.”
Katniss grinned at him. “Do you remember how we met Peeta?”
A vague memory of a brightly dressed man. “Caesar.”
Katniss smiled. “I was renting an apartment in his building. He liked hiring hot guys to fix the apartments. You and Finn were living on your own just out of college and needed jobs, and together you became part of his boy entourage. My window broke and I called him and you arrived wearing those tight white jeans that made my blood pressure increase. Any time you bent over I thought I would explode. I began trying to find things to break so that you could come to my apartment.”
Peeta found her confession funny as Katniss led him to the bed. She covered him up before she too got into the bed and together they snuggled up. As he went to bed he whispered, “I thought you were hot then and I still think you’re smokin now.”
He could see her grin. Katniss leaned up and kissed him on the cheek, “So you think I’m hot?”
He wiggled his eyebrows. “Always.”
Katniss laughed and he pulled her underneath him, he was going to get lucky with his insanely hot wife.

A month since my last post! . I planned to start a vlog three weeks ago and ended up taking almost two months to breath. Detox from the info overload. Align my goals with my spiritual well being. . I am implementing a minimalist philosophy into my life. Yesterday, I intensively downsized my wardrobe (Amelia’s too!). I don’t want her to think that what she wears defines who she is. I also don’t want to spend more than 2 minutes to pick an outfit. We humans are so much more than an image. I am applying this to everything. Our home, schedules, meals. . A simple life, a quiet space. Love. For myself especially. . I wasn’t planning on taking this long, but it’s been the most valuable time I’ve ever had. . Now, my heart aches to share it with you and this week I start creating. Slowly, passionately. Music, film, possibilities are endless. Thank you for being here. . . . Could you adopt to a more “simple” life? . . . #darlingmovement #feelfreefeed #inspiremyinstagram #littlestoriesofmylife #livethelittlethings #simpleandstill #thehappynow #theartofslowliving #thesimpleeveryday #darlingdaily #lifeunscripted #songwriters #dominicana #simpleliving #minimalistlifestyle #moodyphotography #freepeople #liveforyou #beautifulplaces #minimalista #detoxlife #rhodeisland (at Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1l1lQejaeG/?igshid=s5rupw51p3os

Miranda Monday
Alright, I know I’ve given a lot of love to Lin and In the Heights over the past week. I promise it’ll balance out this week)
It’s time for Miranda Monday!
(I know, Lin, I’m happy about it too)
Well, first this happened. (It’s the video of James Corden and Lin-Manuel and others doing Hair and it’s pretty spectacular but it doesn’t count as dramaturgy I’m aware so I’m getting to the real hard-hitting stuff)
(Disclaimer: I am an able-bodied, gay, white man writing about this. My voice is represented onstage, far more than necessary. I do not pretend to be the expert on diverse casting, colorblind casting, color conscious casting, or casting differently-abled actors. This post is not intended to be my opinion, but rather sharing the opinions of others more impacted by this, with a higher level of expertise. Any soapbox that may come across is accidental.)
In 2015, Kent University performed a production of Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop, which depicts an imagined fictional night in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s late life. Controversy arose around the issue when it was revealed to Ms. Hall (and to the entire theatre community) that a Caucasian actor had been cast to play Dr. King. Katori Hall said, in a statement about the situation:
"Black writers dedicated to using black bodies, who remain at the center of a devalued narrative, are committing a revolutionary act. We are using theater to demand a witnessing. Our experiences have been shaped by a ragged history, and dark skin has proved to be a dangerous inheritance. From Eric Garner to the Charleston Nine to the latest black girl slammed to the ground by a cop, our bodies have been used as a battlefield where the Civil War has mutated and continues to claim the lives of those who should have been freed from the sharp knife of racism centuries ago. The casting of a white King is committing yet another erasure of the black body. Sure, it might be in the world of pretend, but it is disrespectful nonetheless, especially to a community that has rare moments of witnessing itself, both creatively and literally, in the world."
The production was closed amidst massive controversy, with the director saying, “I truly wanted to explore the issue of racial ownership and authenticity. I didn’t want this to be a stunt, but a true exploration of King’s wish that we all be judged by the content of our character and not the color of our skin. I wanted the contrast... I wanted to see how the words rang differently or indeed the same, coming from two different actors, with two different racial backgrounds.”
About a month later, a production of Lloyd Suh’s Jesus in India was similarly shuttered for casting Caucasian actors to play Indian characters. Mr. Suh said, similarly to Ms. Hall:
“As a writer of color in a field where representation and visibility are ongoing struggles, I feel a responsibility to provide opportunities for artists of color to be seen.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has been a maverick in creating roles for people of color onstage, commented on these events, in an interview with Howard Sherman, formerly of the Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts and director of the Arts Integrity Initiative, saying:
"Katori Hall never intended for a Caucasian Martin Luther King. That's the end of the discussion. In every case, the intent of the author always wins. If the author has specified the ethnicity of the part, that wins. Frankly, this is why it's so important to me, we're one of the last entertainment mediums that has that power. You go to Hollywood, you sell a script, they do whatever and your name is still on it. What we protect at the Dramatists Guild is the author's power over their words and what happens with them. It's very cut and dry."
However, Miranda has also spoken out in regards to colorblind casting of In the Heights in high schools, saying:
"When I see a school production with not a lot of Latino students doing it, I know they're learning things about Latino culture that go beyond what they're fed in the media every day. They have to learn those things to play their parts correctly. And when I see a school with a huge Latino population do HEIGHTS, I feel a surge of pride that the students get to perform something that may have a sliver of resonance in their daily lives. Just please God, tell them that tanning and bad 50's style Shark makeup isn't necessary. Latinos come in every color of the rainbow, thanks very much."
At Olney Theatre Center (and Round House Theatre as well), we believe representation of a diverse set of cultures onstage is not only important, but mandatory. Round House, in a letter sent out this week in response to the events in Charlottesville and around the world, said:
“We are committed to telling the stories of all races, ethnicities, genders, identities, religions, sexualities, ages, and abilities on our stage. While we have much to be proud of in that regard, we also recognize that we have room to improve. As a predominantly white institution, we recognize there are ways in which we may perpetuate systemic racism and inequality through our choices of programming and casting, and in the makeup of our staff and board. As we reflect on the state of our nation, we can and will do better. As a company, Round House is committed to building a culture where everyone is respected and feels safe. Right now, we’re rehearsing Lin-Manuel Miranda’s epic In The Heights, where he says "racism in this country has gone from latent to blatant.” It’s disheartening this still rings true. But we remain confident that Tony Kushner was right in Angels in America when he said that ‘the world only spins forward.’”
This kind of systemic change isn’t just for the audiences. Getting cast to play one’s own identity allows an actor to feel at home in a play. This is especially important in a show that is so based in community. Linedy Genao, our Vanessa, tweeted:
"Proud of my heritage, and that I get to play a #Dominicana in “In the Heights.” Vanessa Ramirez is Dominican, y’all! Get ready!”
There is a need in the arts as a whole to be more inclusive and representative of race, ethnicity, body size, ability, sexuality, and gender. And there are movements working to improve that. Washington, D.C., for instance, has a yearly Women’s Voice Theater Festival, in which the professional theatres commit to doing works by women. Deaf West Theatre made enormous waves for its production of Spring Awakening, which utilized deaf actors (and featured Ali Stroker, an actress in a wheelchair, who is paving the way for other differently abled artists). Lin-Manuel himself just started a scholarship fund for artists of color to enable them to participate in the O’Neill Center’s National Music Theater Conference (the same institution where In the Heights was first workshopped professionally).
Still, with all the improvements, there is great work to be done. Sam Gold’s recent production of The Glass Menagerie in New York was critically panned because many were upset with the portrayal of Laura by Madison Ferris, an actress with muscular dystrophy who requires a wheelchair. This article from the New York Times addresses the controversy around it. There was an outcry recently when a casting notice for Miranda’s Hamilton specified that it was looking for non-white actors, addressed here. Just this past month, Diana Huey received backlash for being an Asian-American actor performing Ariel in The Little Mermaid with 5th Avenue Theatre (yes, that hyperlink is from Teen Vogue, but they are woke as hell nowadays, so I don’t regret it).
(Here is a sneak peek of her singing “Part of Your World” and it’s amazing)
So this has been a rather long Miranda Monday post. Thank you for reading and, if you want to do further research or stay informed, there are some resources below the gif!
For information on theatres performing diverse work: https://www.backstage.com/news/18-multicultural-theater-companies-across-us/ https://www.backstage.com/news/9-theater-companies-celebrating-actors-disabilities/
Howl Round (which you should totally follow because they release brilliant articles on the state of theatre) had a series about diversity in theatre, but my favorites from them are: http://howlround.com/you-want-a-diverse-theatre-prove-it http://howlround.com/so-you-want-to-start-a-diversity-program-ten-things-to-consider-when-creating-a-diversity-and http://howlround.com/confessions-of-a-convert http://howlround.com/the-full-service-theatre-what-we-ve-learned-at-civic-ensemble http://howlround.com/art-is-not-escapism-art-is-activism-a-conversation-with-amanda-farnsworth-of-random-acts-of-theatre
(I also recommend following Howard Sherman, who is often the first to report on issues of diversity in theatre, as well as infringement of playwright’s rights, and more, on his blog and his Twitter)

Comedian Joanna Hausmann argues for U.S. intervention in Venezuela in a New York Times op ed. (Photo: screenshot, Times op ed video) A recent video opinion piece published by The New York Times intended to drum up support for U.S. involvement in Venezuela failed to disclose the author's ties to the opposition government, leading to criticism from progressives of the paper's coverage. Joanna Hausmann, a comedian who posts highly viewed articles on Venezuela on YouTube, delivered a five minute, thirteen second opinion piece at the Times Monday in which she claims that the country's leader, President Nicolas Maduro, is a dictator and that the American left are his patsies. "This movement is dangerously glorifying a brutal dictator and promoting inaction," Hausmann says in the video as quirky music plays behind her. "That is the worst combination for ordinary Venezuelans." Hausmann also claims that the country's economic problems are the fault of decades of socialist rule and that the path forward is a future without Maduro—it's implied, though never outright stated, that the answer is for opposition leader Juan Guaidó to take power. What the video and the Times did not reveal is that Hausmann's father, Harvard University economics professor Ricardo Hausmann, currently serves as Guaidó's envoy to the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). It's a position that, if Guaidó became president, would wield immense political and economic power. That omission was a focus of criticism from progressives. The elder Hausmann's place in the Venezuelan shadow government is a conflict that should have been made clear in his daughter's opinion video implicitly arguing for American intervention to remove Maduro. "[Very] cool of the NYT to not mention, you know, the fact that Joanna Hausmann's dad is an economic adviser for Guaidó," tweeted Think Progress reporter Rebekah Entralgo Fernández. 16. https://www.foxnews.com/travel/lithuanian-man-gets-rare-experience-of-flying-alone-on-commercial-flight.amp 17. Music is not just something you listen to on your way to work or while you’re cleaning the house. It’s something you put on to transport you to another place and time. It’s an influence that’s so big, marketers incorporated well known musical acts like Cardi B, Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes in their Super Bowl commercials this year.
Latina musicians with a sexy flair for style, catchy hooks and a bad ass jefa kind of attitude are so inspiring to me. As I watch their music videos and scroll through their IG feeds, I fall into a hypnotic state of awe as they flaunt girl power through their lyrics and wardrobes. They work with stylists and design their own clothes, some are flashy and others keep it classy, but what all of these ladies have in common is a goal to achieve their dreams THEIR WAY 👏🏼
Check out the Latina songstresses below and let me know who’s you’re favorite and who we should highlight next!
Kali Uchis
The DMV-raised Colombian songstress gets inspired by reggae, doo-op and her own life when she’s songwriting. Uchis captures my bilingual heart by singing in perfect Spanglish in songs like “Tyrant” and “El Ratico” with Juanes. Her style is like that of a vintage loving mafia queen, and I can’t get enough 😩 👏🏼
Greeicy
This Colombian actress turned singer is basically the Latina Sporty Spice. She’s never too dressed up, preferring denim cut off’s and athleisure wear to create the cutest tomboy next door look! She’s like that super hot friend who plays and coaches soccer on the weekends (I remember seeing a lot of these girls in Miami 😉).
Sabrina Claudio
This sultry voiced chanteuse was raised in Miami, moved to Los Angeles for her music career, and our ears have been blessed ever since. She lives in silks and satins onstage while taking a more artistic approach to her outfits in music videos. This Puerto-Cuban will take you to another world, both musically and fashion-wise!
Amara La Negra
You can catch this gorgeous Dominicana standing up for Afro-Latino’s on Love & Hip Hop Miami , co-hosting The View and being a hard working girl boss on her Instagram. She’s not afraid to flaunt her curves and show some skin, exuding confidence and empowering women with every wardrobe change!
Latina’s, Music & Style |Who You Need To Know This Week! Music is not just something you listen to on your way to work or while you're cleaning the house.

2017 Review !
We did a lovely pick-up for you, 10 songs, in order to remember new releases that inspire us a lot and that we heard it during the year..this is a not ordered list and it does not pretend to be the best music on the world ;) we hope you will love it :
