here's what I've learned to never pay full price for, because people are giving these items away for free or almost free on Craigslist, Nextdoor, Facebook, at Goodwill, and on eBay (which has a local pickup section) in every sufficiently populated location in the USA.
cost of acquiring these items ranges from "carrying it home from the sidewalk" to "getting a friend with a car to help you pick it up" which is the same amount of effort as going to IKEA for worse quality that costs more, with the notable exception of it being a pain in the ass to coordinate with craigslist sellers, and you often have to wait and watch for what you want to actually show up. it took me about a year to find an acceptable gamer chair left out on the sidewalk, for example. but they cost $100+ new, so I chose to wait.
a lot of this stuff is the kind of thing you don't necessarily intend to keep, just to use in transitional housing or until you can afford a better one.
1. printers of any kind. basic office inkjets are free. ink is easily refillable or has generic ink cartridges way cheaper than brand name for any inkjet up to about 2015, not sure how difficult the newer smart printers are to hack but there's no reason to own a newer one because printing technology has not improved since about 2005. you want a color laser for making zines and wheatpastes? it's on Craigslist RN and someone's mom is desperate to get rid of it
2. bedframes
3. desks
4. tables
5. chairs
6. bookshelves, nice oak bookshelves that don't bend like al dente spaghetti when you put books on them, are rotting on sidewalks rn because they didn't fit in someone's house. go get them
7. scanners. I find a working scanner by a dumpster at least once a quarter, and I don't pick them up because I already have one that I picked up from a dumpster years ago
8. hot tubs. everyone thinks they want a hot tub and that the maintenance and upkeep will be worth it, and they are wrong. Craigslist.
9. sofas, with the caveat that if you are in a bedbug region like New York State you need to be very confident in your bedbug screening skills
10. quality leather shoes. these last forever and are expensive new. eBay is best for these
11. plates, glassware, silverware. all of these are able to be sterilized to whatever standard you feel comfortable with but if you eat in restaurants you've already put a fork in your mouth that hundreds of people have drooled on so try not to fool yourself
12. televisions and computer monitors
13. houseplants. similar to the bedbug warning above, you need to screen these for pests like fungus gnats and mealybugs
14. dressers, wardrobes, china hutches, cabinets, chests of drawers, etc
15. mirrors
16. clothes hangers
17. moving boxes
18. mattresses to a certain extent. I don't like secondhand used mattresses but unstained, unused mattresses are surprisingly common, especially since the foam mail order mattress boom started and people keep getting told by the mattress companies to just get rid of/keep any mattresses they want to return for flaws or wrong sizes or whatever. bedbug warning on this obviously
19. sheets and towels. you gotta launder them obviously
20. basic clothing, especially for kids. normie type clothing is so numerous people often just throw them away because they can't get anyone to take them
21. kitchenware like cooking utensils and pots n pans. don't use chipped or scratched Teflon/nonstick if you can help it. everyone needs one basic steel chef knife, which can be sharpened and maintained indefinitely. people throw these away CONSTANTLY
22. household consumables like laundry soap and dish soap. people often accidentally buy the wrong brand, scent, or develop allergies and want to get rid of extra
23. pet supplies like collars, leashes, dog crates, litter boxes, litter itself, dog beds, toys, carriers, etc
24. medical equipment of all kinds. people who take care of all kinds of patients end up with tons of leftover, sealed, miscellaneous stuff when that person recovers or dies, and they often give it away. adult diapers, hospital beds, IV stands, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, fracture boots and splints, knee braces, canes, catheter packs, ice packs, heat packs, sterile paper sheeting, gauze, slings, over-the-door stretching and rehab pulleys, mattress protectors, etc
25. washers and dryers, both the basic household cube type and the small twin tub or rock tumbler type. people upgrade these when the old ones are still working, just squeaky or a little weird or sometimes just old
26. vacuum cleaners. secondhand ones are sort of icky but you can get rid of the ickiness by wiping them down with a rag and isopropyl alcohol inside and out. use an exacto or utility knife to slice off the hair and string wrapped around the roller. buy a new filter on Amazon. people throw away vacuums that work perfectly all the time because they don't actually know how to clean them out or do maintenance. bedbug and pet hair warning obviously
27. microwaves
28. refrigerators
30. lamps
31. any kind of exercise equipment including stationary bikes, ellipticals and weights/weight benches
32. any kind of piano. there's a grand on my local Craigslist for free rn
33. scrap wood and lumber
34. pallets
35. wood shipping crates
36. newborn, toddler and baby equipment like breast milk pumps and storage, bottles, bottle racks, diapers, etc. anything a little guy will grow out of fast will end up being given away
37. air conditioners, humidifiers and dehumidifiers. these will be most numerous during their respective off seasons
list updated 2/13/24 based on recent Craigslist trawling
38. jars, both canning type jars and clean food jars like from pickled or jelly bought at the store
39. rugs. most of my rugs are sidewalk finds. rugs will almost always be dirty. a decent consumer grade rug cleaner costs under $100, it's cheaper to just buy one if you have the space to store it. flushing the scavenged rug with soap, hot water, vinegar, alcohol, etc will clean almost anything but huge bedbug and allergen warning on this item

Mia Bella - CC
Tumblr media
Pairing: Caitlin Clark x Reader
Summary: You and Caitlin meet at the dog park :)
Warnings: fluff
Word Count: 1.9k
Sweetbans Masterlist
AN: Here's a cute one for you - I honestly just love the thought of meeting outside of basketball and then having mutual support of one another. Ugh - I digress.
6 weeks. 6 weeks was all your summer at home consisted of before having to head back to school to start pre-season training. You play volleyball for UCLA which had you back in SoCal starting in the middle of July. Your love for playing outweighed your disgust for such a short summer but 6 weeks felt like nothing.
Your favorite part of being home was getting to spend all the time in the world with your baby, Mia. Mia is a six-year-old, beautiful aussie who has been your best friend ever since she was a puppy. She is your favorite reason to come home for the summer. She provided the rest you needed from training while keeping you out in the sun. And this summer you were extra excited.
The city had just put in a new dog park right down the street from your house that had triple the space than any of the parks within a 10-mile radius from you. The only plan you had was to take her there daily. You knew she wasn’t going to complain about that - it was a long-standing summer tradition for the two of you.
You got home on a Friday night and first thing Saturday morning was taking Mia to the park. You grab you both water, her ball, and a blanket and put it in a bag with some snacks (some for you and some for her). You grab Mia’s leash and next thing you know you are off to the park.
It’s a beautiful day. Mia makes a b-line to the park as your dad had been taking her since it opened. You get to the park right around 9 and find a nice place to set up your blanket. You set everything down and take Mia off her leash, she immediately gets the zoomies and you run around with her. You grab her ball and begin to play fetch.
If there is anything Mia loves more in this world than you, it is playing fetch. She would play all day if someone was willing to throw the ball to her. As you are throwing the ball with her you see another pup come and join Mia. A beautiful golden joins in with Mia - never stealing the ball but just happy to have someone to run around with. Mia drops her ball and the two dogs begin introducing themselves. The golden comes your way to get some pets and seems so excited to find another friend, even if you aren't four-legged.
Out of the corner of your eye, you see another 2-legged friend come jogging your way. You get up from the squat you were in to give the pups some love and give a little wave to the girl coming up.
"I am so sorry," she begins but you immediately wave her off.
"Please don't apologize, your pup is a sweetheart," you say as you continue to love on her pup. "What is their name?"
"Bella," the girl says. "My sweet Bella."
"It's so nice to meet you, Bella!" You say as you give her ear scratches. Your dog then goes up and looks for pets from the Bella's owner. "That is Mia," you say signaling to your baby.
Once a moment passes, you realize you haven't introduced yourself and extend your hand to do so. She shakes your hand with a smile and tells you her name is Caitlin.
"Well it is certainly a pleasure to meet you, Caitlin," you say with a smile. “I’ve caught a few of your games last season - your game is strong.” It’s her turn to smile after you give the compliment.
You invite her to sit while your pups run around. The two of you begin to get to know one another. You learn that she’s played basketball her whole life and that she had to play on the boys' team while she was in elementary. Following that - she was chosen to play for Team USA when she was in high school. As she was talking about playing, it was really neat to hear how much she loves the sport but is still able to separate her game from who she knows she is. Sitting there listening to her, it feels like she has opened a door to her soul- her genuine self. Your heart was instantly hooked.
As she kept talking, it felt like everything in the world melted away - she could talk you into circles and you would follow her anywhere. She talked about how she wanted to go to UConn but they never reached out to her. The coach never came to any of her games and the school never contacted her family. She ended up going to Iowa which meant she was close to home and her family could come and watch her play whenever. She talked about how that affected her in a way she wouldn’t have expected at the time but was for the better. You don’t know what it was but it felt like she was telling you things she hasn’t told anyone.
After she finishes talking about basketball, she starts to talk about how she was born and raised here. She talks about her two brothers and how competitive she was and still is. She talks about how there wasn’t much time for anything outside of basketball. Not that she regretted missing out on things like prom and dating.
When it was your turn, you talked about how you had a very similar background but instead of basketball, it was volleyball. You grew up playing from a young age and are now playing D1 volleyball at UCLA which is a little further from home than you hoped. You talked about how your family travels to come see you as often as they can but it never feels like enough. You talk about how you don't really know what you want to do after playing in college - you have thought about coaching but haven't figured it out yet.
Continuing, you talk about your family and how you are an only child but always wanted siblings growing up. You talk about how nice it was to go to college away but how much you missed the Midwest and look forward to coming back after you graduate. You relate to her in how time outside of sports had you missing things that felt like a right of passage but never really minded it. You were lucky to always have friends on the teams that you played on - they kept you going.
Before the two of you know, it is already mid-afternoon. Both of your pups are napping next to one another like they have known each other their whole lives.
"How long are you home for?" Caitlin asks.
"I have about 6 weeks before having to head back for training. It's not much but it is better than nothing," you say, giving a half smile to your new friend.
"Dang, that feels like nothing," she says with a little laugh. "Do you have any plans?" She asks, hoping that this is just the start of a new friendship rather than a one-and-done thing. She had shared more with you in the last few hours than she had with most people in the first month.
"The only set plan I have is to bring Mia here as much as possible," you say with a smile. "If you aren't super busy, you should join! You and Bella of course," you follow up.
"It's a date," she says giving you a smile. Your cheeks start to heat up, smiling back.
The next few weeks were some of the best you have ever had while being home for the summer. Caitlin and you had spent every day at the park, bringing your dogs of course. Some days you would both bring a book and read, others you would end up talking the whole time. It was really nice to have someone to spend time with while you were home.
Getting to know each other at the park is what brought you to her house today. As you get out of your car, you see her come around the house and wave. You give her a wave back as you grab your things. You don't know how it happened but one day at the park you brought up how her shooting from the logo and how you couldn't shoot a basketball to save your life. She promised she would teach you before the summer was over.
So here you are, about to make a fool of yourself in front of one of the best women college players and there was nothing you could do. You walk over to her and give her a little hug.
"Are you ready to learn how to shoot?" Caitlin says with excitement. Her excitement is contagious.
"As ready as I will ever be!" You say with a chuckle, Caitlin's cute when she is excited.
The two of you stretch and she goes on about how she knows you will be a natural...or so she hoped.
You always love to prove people wrong, usually, it is those who are telling you that you can't do something. This time around, you wish you could prove her right because it was quite embarrassing.
"Well that was terrible," she says with a laugh. Both of you are lying on the ground in her home gym as you have just spent the last two hours trying to do anything that resembled basketball.
"I feel like that doesn't do justice to what I am capable of athletically. If you really want to see what I can do, you would come to one of my games," you say with a laugh.
"I would love to see you play," she says, turning her head to look at you. "Maybe someday we can make that happen."
Looking back at her you reply, "I would love that Cait."
"Then I'll come watch you play," you say with a smile. She smiles in response and scoots a little closer.
"Can I tell you something?" She asks. You nod, turning to face her. The ground wasn't the most comfortable thing, but you wanted to provide her your full attention.
"I am really glad our dogs met that day in the park," she begins, not really making eye contact with you. "I wasn't super excited about coming home for the summer but meeting and getting to know you has changed that. I am really glad we met. talking to you and laughing with you has brought me joy and I want to continue talking even when you go back to California. I don't want to not talk to you...or see you because well, I like you. I like you a lot. And I don't really know what to do with how much I like you because this is all new to me and..." You grab her hand and give it a squeeze. She finally looks up at you.
Her hand comes up to your face, her fingers brushing against your cheek. Her eyes look at your lips as she begins to lean in.
"Tell me if you want me to stop," she says just above a whisper, as her face inches closer to yours. You shake your head no as you close your eyes, waiting to feel her lips.
The kiss is simple. It is slow, just getting to know what the other feels like. Once she breaks away, you place your forehead against hers.
"I like you too," you say with a smile.
AN: Finally a shorter one, we are working on it. I hope you enjoyed it! And as always, thank you for your love and support 🤍

I (metaphorically) ran into this baby while out walking this weekend. The little dude was pretty chill but right in the walking path, and I couldn't trust the families with small children or (even thankfully) leashed dogs to spot it and/or leave it alone, so I snapped a pic and then gently (and very cautiously) stomped my feet at a careful distance to help convince it to leave the path and slither back into the woods nearby.

"Outdoor cats are safer in the UK than in the USA"
The UK: Apparently has no laws about keeping dogs on leashes and dog attacks on horses are apparently extremely common, often resulting in deadly injuries for the horses and riders.

on your twitter how do you cope with a phobia of dogs? Why do I have to show them dog I'm not afraid instead of the owner controlling their dogs
*everything I say is based on what my grandmother (used to breed dogs for shows) and my dad (was a professionally certified dog trainer for many years and does it on request now) have told me and the idea that you live in the USA where there are almost no stray dogs around
so if a dog is on leash the dog is controlled. you should be communicating with the owner if it's safe to go up to it. If you're afraid of dogs don't go near it. if a dog is off leash it should be trained enough to return when called. my dads service dog will make a circle around him to give him the space he needs. my mom's giant ass newfie doesn't like getting more than a few feet away from everyone else it stresses him out. so when you see a dog off leash it's probably very well trained.
a dog is rarely aggressive enough to attack you just cause. that's a severe personality defect and hopefully, that dog is neutered because that aggressiveness is genetic. say a dog gets out right bolts out the door. That dog is probably very poorly trained as it's run off and is refusing to return. You don't turn and run. Don't look below it's eyes. If it for some reason runs at you lift a knee up. A dog slamming it's chest into something solid as a human knee will make it back off.
If you do get bit go to the doctor and tell animal control cause again something wrong with that dog. Normal dogs with even basic obedience training do not attack people.
We used to have this nasty little mini Australian shepherd and she was impossible. Always trying to run away and fast as hell. Really aggressive she bit me once while attempting to kill our aunt who came to visit. And she was like 15 pounds and easily fit in my arms. There was like four people (my grandparents, my brother and I) who could pick her up. Just a nasty creature. My grandmother said bad litter no training could save her. Sometimes that happens. But we never took her to dog parks or out in public because we knew she was a nightmare.
on occasion, people will bring mean dogs out but I'd bet money in a park you'd think the rottweiler who loves ear scratches is more aggressive than the tiny little aussie shepherd who's being held. which gets into dangerous vs aggressive. because the rottie is more Dangerous but in all likelihood less aggressive than a smaller dog.

kind of just sounds like you hate dogs. leash laws don't apply to beaches either btw
Not getting into the dregs of this argument again for real but
A) i love dogs they are very cute and funny and sweet creatures. i don't love when their owners think it's a Me problem when i don't want their 100 pound hunting dog jumping on me on sight.
B) you're right, leash laws don't apply to beaches! Because (in the USA at least) most beaches have laws banning pets from being brought entirely. So your dog shouldn't even be there let alone unleashed

Since no one seems to know: in the usa you can ask too questions of someone who brings a dog into a store (because the ada ONLY covers dogs. Some STATES cover more and they legally can because the ada rules UNLESS a state law provides MORE protection for disabled people). 1) it is a service dog? and 2) what tasks is it trained to do?
If they say "yes" to number one but can't answer the second then congrats! By legal definition it is NOT a service dog! Throw them out! Service dogs are REQUIRED to have a task they are trained to do that directly mitigates a person's disability. It is the ONLY thing that makes them a service dog. Some states cover service dogs in training. Be sure that you know whether your state does or does not.
Now. If it's IS a service dog and it's misbehaved (barking inappropriately, touching food, getting on furniture, not responding to cues (service dogs are REQUIRED to be under control of the handler), etc.) OR unclean, you can LEGALLY, as per the ADA, tell the handler that they MUST remove the dog BUT that they can come back without it.
Also keep in mind: the ada makes it legal to have multiple service dogs that you work concurrently. Having two dogs doesn't automatically mean they AREN'T service dogs. It's less likely because that's a lot of work but it's not impossible.
Also also keep in mind: there is no federal registry. Requiring registration of a service dog is illegal. Requiring documentation for a service dog is illegal. Requiring a vest is ILLEGAL. Requiring a leash for a service dog that is under control is ILLEGAL
AND if your boss tries to dock hours/fired you over any of this: GET A LAWYER! you are following the law. Fuck them
Have fun kids!
Because the service worker at my local grocery store isn't allowed to tell you and I'm angry right now:
If the makeup product is sealed then it's not a fucking tester sample, you dumb fucking idiot
Get. Your. Fuck. OFF. SKATEBOARD??? HEELIES? Fuckin. RoLLER. SKATES. BICYCLE???? Riding. .In the GROCERY STORE??????? Shut the FUCK your FUCK. BASTARD
(Tears in my eyes) I'm fucking begging you to leave your non-service animal outside. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Surprise inspections happen and they will shut the entire building down for the love of God
Your kid rolling on the floor and making potions out of the shampoo and filming tiktoks in the clinic is the reason you're going to hell and I'm going to take you there myself
If you make a staff member cry on purpose then you're the biggest ugliest bitch in the whole wide world and nobody loves you
DO NOT LOCK YOUR BIKE TO THE SIGNAGE/GARDEN DISPLAY/TABLE THRY NEED TO BE ABLE TO *MOVE* THOSE THERES A FUCKING BIKE RACK RIFHT FUCKING THERE WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU ISE THE BIKE RACK
YES YOU *DO* NEED TO WEAR SHOES AND A SHIRT IN THE CAFE WE LIFE IN A GOD DAMNED SOCIETY
If you bring an untrained dog with anxiety out in public on purpose and leave it tied next to tge front door to lose its fucking mind for an hour and a half while you stand around the lotto booth when you just as easily could have not then I will kill you with a rock

Did you know? Service dogs in the USA
Did you know: Service dogs do Not have to wear service dog vests, or have papers/ special SD registration. While they may wear a vest, this is completely optional. Often, SD handlers feel pressured by society to have them because so many people think service dogs must have vests. This needs to change. They do not have to go through a professional training program. An individual can train their own dog to be a service dog. Service Dogs do not have to be a special breed. While labs, golden retrievers, and poodles are the most common, any breed or mix can be an SD. Service dogs must be potty trained. If they potty indoors in a public space, management can ask them to leave but must still offer service to the disabled person without the service dog's presence. Service dogs must always be under control. If the owner is failing to control them, management can also ask that the service dog leave as long as they offer service to the owner without the dog's presence. Did you know if a service dog approaches you without their owner and barks at you, it may be a trained behavior? This is a task a service dog may do to get help for their owner. Follow the dog. Once you find the owner, if they are unconscious or unable to speak, look for medical alert IDs on a bracelet, necklace, or keychain. There may be instructions on how to help the person. Service dogs are still dogs, and they can have off days! Please do not take it on yourself to gatekeep service dogs if you notice one acting in a way you think it should not. Some tasks may also be mistaken for misbehaving. For example, a SD may be trained to jump up as an alert, or grabbing a bag of food off a low shelf for their handler, who can't bend over to reach. You are legally allowed to ask 2 questions: is this a service dog, and what tasks is it trained to perform? You can not ask the person to make the dog demonstrate its tasks. You can not ask for registration papers or ask what disability the person has. Service dogs are not emotional support animals. Service dogs are trained to perform a task, while emotional support animals, or ESAs do not need special training. ESAs are allowed in apartments where pets are not allowed. They also do not have to be a dog. They can be a cat, rabbit, or other species. Service dogs must be potty trained, under control, and trained to perform tasks to help the disabled handler. ESAs are not allowed public access, while service dogs are legally allowed in public spaces. Another note on gatekeeping: just because someone does not look disabled does not mean they are not. Invisible disabilities are more common than you might expect, and you are not doing anyone a favor by calling someone out because they do not look disabled to you. A handler with invisible disabilities may still need a service dog. Please be kind. Do not pet or distract a service dog. Do not grab at its leash. Do not touch its vest if it has one. You can ask the handler if it is okay to pet the dog, but do not be offended if they say no. The dog is working, and its key priority is paying attention to and taking care of its handler. Service dogs may be dyed fun colors! Handlers use pet friendly dye on their dogs for various reasons, including preventing theft, making their dog more visible (and less likely to be tripped over!), and just to have fun! This is completely okay, and not a sign of a fake SD. Pet friendly dye does not hurt the dog. I'm intentionally going to tag unrelated subjects to attempt to break out of the general circles who may already know this information. This is an attempt to educate the general population instead of people who know about service dogs already.
