Wasp Farewell
I went about six weeks without a computer, and I've been slowly getting my new machine set up. My 2017 iMac had a hardware failure at the end of October. I think six years is a good run for a computer, so, although it was a disruption to go over a month without a personal machine, I'm pleased that the machine met my needs for at least five of those six years. Even before I got into audio, I threw some heavy loads at my machines with Photoshop and Lightroom.
With the new machine, I thought I would try using Da Vinci Resolve instead of Adobe Premiere. The free version of Resolve is a complete video editing system, but it lacks features like lens correction (note the barrel distortion above) that Premiere has. I don't think I'll want to pay for a Premiere license once my current license ends, so I'm exploring other options.
I made this video because I was about to pull the Doepfer A-119 external input and the Doepfer A-124 Wasp filter to make room for new modules. In the video, I'm messing around with using a cheap microphone run through the A-119 to frequency modulate the Befaco Pony VCO. I'm saying the name of Texas baseball player Nolan Ryan at a variety of registers. I later start Pamela's New Workout to trigger pings from the Wasp filter. I don't think this is good, but it's bad in a goofy way.

Oddly enough, today my wife told me that my mother in law was asking her if I had anything I wanted for Christmas, and after talking things over a little, I ended up giving them both a wish list I have at a major music retailer — one I'd curated a bit to keep modules and accessories within reasonable costs, and have a range of not-too-expensive items — so I might actually be given a module I want. I mean, they're probably not gonna spring for a Wogglebug, let alone a Morphagene or a Spectraphon, but I might get something on the scale of a Press Point or Doepfer's A-119 Envelope Follower.
Weird. I think it's just disorienting and a little embarrassing for family members to have that much insight into what I'm actually doing with the Eurorack stuff beyond by usual self-effacing description of "making beepy noises".
I'm having one of those nights where I'm intensely wanting a dozen or so different Eurorack modules, and don't have the resources for any of them. The system I have is a lot of fun, but I keep thinking that I could do so much more if I just had — and that's where the list starts piling up. More VCAs, obviously; some complex audio sources like a Plaits clone and a sampler; a quantizer and a Turing Machine, or some multitool like the Ornament and Crime that does such things. A multimode filter.
Some things I have in the DIY planning or building stages, like the Baby10 sequencer I've been sort of working on for years, or the pseudorandom sequence generator I have breadboarded, or the Wasp filter on stripboard that's sitting semi-abandoned in a box here. And there are two modules based around Electric Druid chips that I just need to tweak slightly before they're ready to send to a PCB manufacturer.
(See, their STOMPLFO and ONESHOT chips use the same underlying PIC and very similar I/O, so I think I can make the circuit I designed for one also work with the other — and if I can make the layout symmetrical, I can have the panels made flippable, so the minimum order of five pieces would mean I had two different working modules. Just need to get back to kicad to make those tweaks.)
Anyway. I don't mean to feel sorry for myself — or worse yet, to convince readers to — for picking an expensive hobby, even if I've mostly managed to cheap out on it pretty well so far. Too much envy directed at other people's rigs isn't good for me. But there's so much available that would be such fun!

From Monotrail on YouTube, via matrixsynth.
“And we go on!!! I bought two guitar pedals, mainly for live use. They are sturdy, look good, and are cheap. I thought I would do a Live Jam with some knob tweaking before I place them out sight. PS: Sorry for the wobly[sic] camera, I don’t have a tripod, but use a bongo instead…
If you are still interested in obtaining one of the 50 tape’s, or a digital version of the 100th Live Jam release, please visit my bandcamp: https://monotrail.bandcamp.com”
Nice integration of Korg Volca Sample and TC Electronics with the Eurorack modular. And we like the trick of running the Volca Sample through the Doepfer A-119. Spot the kitty 😺
