Talk about robust and sturdy pickups, and you cannot omit Ram. The large, muscular, and powerful off-road vehicle with a Ram badge on its nose is ready for any wild call. The 2500 Crew Cab is one of the most popular offers from popular American truck dealers.
Since 2011, the current 2021 Ram 2500 Crew Cab is the 5th generation launched in 2021. Being a large crew cab, it has seats for four and has plenty of muscle and power, but there's something more that separates the 2021 Ram 2500 range from its clout. 2021 Ram 2500 Engine and Performance
The standard engine of the 2021 Ram 2500 range is 6.4-liter V8 petrol with 410 horsepower. It has a cylinder deactivation function to help you save a little more fuel at a lower cost. It is compatible with the automatic transmission of an 8-speed rear-wheel drive by default, with optional Four-wheel drive. The Ram 2500 has 19,370 lbs of towing capacity and a maximum payload of 4,520 lbs. It's still exceptional and more than enough for most buyers' needs.
The larger 6.4-liter V8 has all the power you need for daily activities and all that power is delivered to the wheel quickly. The 8-speed automatic transmission feels good in your business and never feels in the wrong gear. Shifts are smooth and quick, with no sign of interruption.
2021 Ram 2500 Interior
The cabin of the Ram 2500 truck is desirable spacious. All vehicles in the heavy-duty pickup segment have comfortable cabins and space for 5 to 6 people. Each trim level of the 2021 Ram 2500 has its own elements. However, to keep the cabins quiet, they all have some standard features like active sound cancellation and acoustic glass.
The material used inside is of good quality, such as real wood and metal. It is also clear that many ideas are stuck. The massive center console can be configured in 12 ways, with a double glove compartment and extra storage space attached to the rear seat bench. The two Ram bins on the floor of the Crew Cab models are closed and not visible.
2021 Ram 2500 Infotainment and Connectivity
The 2021 model will feature an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen and a 12.0-inch customizable touchscreen. However, Ram is expected to release the two 12.0-inch displays by 2021. Wireless charging is also available, as well as up to five USB ports in the center console, including a new Type-C port. There are also three 3-pin / 115-volt outlets: one in the front, one in the back, and one in the RamBox.
For a pickup, the display is sharp and bright and responds very well to touch input too. There's no shortage of connectivity features, and the Ram 2500 Crew Cab comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 9-speaker Alpine premium audio system is also available for audiophile enjoyment.
2021 Ram 2500 Safety Features
In terms of safety features, the 2021 Ram 2500 Crew Cab should be similar to its 2020 counterpart. Best New Overland Vehicles: Factory-Backed Off-Roaders Ready for the Trail
For many overlanders and off-roaders, modifying their SUV or truck is half the fun—I know this full well, as I’ve watched my wife turn her Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid into a light-duty overland expedition rig. But modifying any vehicle (not to mention assuming you know better than a team of highly skilled automotive engineers) can be risky, especially if you plan on heading off the beaten path.
At worst, a poorly chosen part could break, leaving you stranded a long hike from the nearest pavement. At best, you might destroy the way your vehicle drives. With that in mind, here’s a list of MotorTrend’s picks of the best new overland vehicles.
All 10 of these trucks and SUVs are ready for overland travels right off the lot, and they’ve also been tried and tested by us off-road on the trail. We’ve also kept in mind prices, factory options, and payload capacities. After all, a vehicle that’s good off-road but can’t haul your rooftop tent and gear is of little use. Here’s what we came up with:
2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2
Price: $44,490 Pros: Tremendously versatile—equally at home on the highway, running the Baja, and rock crawling. AEV Bison package is appealing for overlanding, too. Cons: Cabin is spacious but feels cheap; diesel fuel economy should be better.
The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 has proven itself to be a capable overlander multiple times, including on our journey across the Trans-Labrador Highway and on the infamous Mojave Road. We love its standard MultiMatic DSSV dampers, which give the ZR2 exceptional manners both on the road and off it, and its electronic full-locking front and rear differentials for low-traction situations, which is becoming increasingly rare from factory vehicles.
Available with a 308-hp 3.6-liter V-6 or a 186-hp 2.8-liter turbodiesel I-4 and with a payload capacity of up to 1,100 pounds, the Colorado ZR2 is also available with the AEV Bison package. That adds boron steel skidplates and bumpers for extra peace of mind off-road.
2020 Ford F-150 Raptor
Price: $55,150 Pros: Powerful, fast, and fun to drive. Ford’s Trail Control and off-road drive modes help make things easy. Cons: The Raptor’s payload is unimpressive for its size, and its dimensions might give you trouble on narrow trails.
Arguably the vehicle responsible for starting the warranty-backed desert-running truck craze, the Raptor is unsurprisingly quite capable as an overland platform, too. Although its large size might make life trickier on narrow trails (its tires and fender flares make it wide enough to require clearance lights), the Raptor’s cushy Baja-ready electronically adjustable Fox shock absorbers, meaty tires, and powerful 450-hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 help make it one of the most fun-to-drive overlanders on this list. Don’t forget to tick the box for the bead-lock wheels (allowing you to run super low tire pressures without the tires falling off the rim) and the limited-slip front differential. The Raptor has payload capacity of up to 1,000-1,200-pounds.
2020/2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon/Mojave
Price: $45,370 Pros: Like a billy goat, a stock Gladiator can take you almost anywhere, thanks to its long list of standard off-road features. Good payload capacity for its size, too. Cons: The manual is geared too tall, cabin can be noisy, sub-par breakover angle, and Gladiators get pricey quickly.
Despite just losing to the Colorado Bison in a recent comparison, the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and the newly released Gladiator Mojave are easy adds to this list. If the Gladiator’s segment-best four-wheel drive payload of up to 1,200 pounds doesn’t pique your interest, the tremendous capability brought forth by its off-road hardware should.
The Rubicon model, the more rock-focused of the two, sports locking front and rear differentials, an electronic anti-roll bar disconnect for increased articulation, and a low range with a 4:1 crawl ratio. We haven’t driven the desert-focused Gladiator Mojave yet, but we have no reason to believe it would be less capable than the Rubicon. It gets a beefed-up frame and shocks to handle high speeds across the desert, plus a wider front track for better stability.
It also gets a locking rear differential, but it lacks a front locker or anti-roll bar disconnect. Both models get 33-inch tires, steel bumpers, skidplates, rock rails, and a standard 3.6-liter V-6 with 285 hp. One knock: Its long wheelbase means the Gladiator drags its well-armored belly on nearly everything.
2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
Price: $43,620 Pros: See Jeep Gladiator: There aren’t many places a stock Wrangler won’t go. Tremendously capable and well-thought-out package from the factory. Cons: Low payload capacity, cabin can be noisy, and the Jeep’s suspension setup favors a steady pace, unlike some of the desert runners on this list.
An off-road comparison test winner and 2019 SUV of the Year, the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is an easy add to this list. Few vehicles are as tremendously capable from the factory floor as the Wrangler Rubicon. Sporting the exact same hardware as the Gladiator Rubicon but in a more compact, maneuverable package, the Wrangler can directly trace its lineage back to the World War II Willys MB, the vehicle that created the SUV and this segment.
A 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 is standard on the Wrangler, and both a 270-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 (our favorite) and a 260-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 are optional. The Wrangler’s payload capacity is 892 pounds, though, so pack light.
2020 Land Rover Defender 110
Price: $50,925 Pros: A thoroughly modern 21st century overlander; supremely comfortable and capable with a high payload capacity. Seats up to eight. Cons: The mild hybrid engine is an expensive option; brakes can be a bit touchy.
It’s easy to dismiss the new Defender 110 for its unibody chassis and fully independent air suspension, but despite its modernity it’s a tremendously capable (and comfortable) overlander. With full-time four-wheel drive, automatic locking center and rear differentials, and Land Rover’s latest Terrain Response software, the Defender drastically reduces the learning curve for budding overland enthusiasts.
Land Rover also offers an Explorer package from the factory, complete with a heavy-duty expedition-style roof rack and snorkel, a winch, an onboard air compressor, a shower (say what?), and more. We’ve yet to drive the base 296-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, but the optional 395-hp 3.0-liter electrically supercharged and turbocharged I-6 is more than sufficiently powerful. Payload ratings of as much as 2,100 pounds are truly impressive.
2020 Ram 2500 Power Wagon
Price: $50,085 Pros: Arguably the most off-road-capable pickup on the market; great payload capacity; and a standard winch, lockers, and electronic anti-roll bar disconnect. Cons: If you thought the Raptor was big, wait until you see this thing. Has a drinking problem.
Like the Wrangler, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon can trace its roots back to World War II, when the Dodge WC (to be named “Power Wagon” when the civilian version went on sale in 1946) helped the Allies in their winning war effort. It’s modern descendant has proven itself time and time again, ably conquering whatever we can throw at it despite its size.
Powered by a thirsty 6.4-liter V-8 with 410 hp, the Power Wagon sports locking front and rear diffs, an electronic anti-roll bar disconnect, steel body armor, and a Warn winch rated for 12,000 pounds. Although the Power Wagon is a stand-alone model, it’s also possible to spec it as a package on the base Tradesman model. It’s rated to haul 1,500-1,620 pounds.
2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro
Price: $50,985 Pros: Impressive payload, great ride quality, and beefy drivetrain. Cons: Dated, cramped cabin—powertrain is even older. Inefficient for its size.
The 4Runner has long been a favorite of off-roaders because of its perceived reliability and large aftermarket support. With the creation of the TRD Pro model in 2017, you no longer need to modify your 4Runner to take a beating, as it’s tremendously capable out of the box.
Long-travel Fox Racing Shox, a locking rear diff, a snorkel, and Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system are all standard on the 4Runner TRD Pro. Despite its capability, the 4Runner is one of the most dated vehicles on this list, with a cramped, cheap-feeling cabin and a 270-hp 4.0-liter V-6 that dates back to 2002. Even with its old powertrain, this old girl can haul up to 1,550 pounds.
2020 Toyota Land Cruiser
Price: $86,740 Pros: Lives up to its legendary reputation; will likely last longer than you will; off-road turn assist makes the Land Cruiser feel far smaller than it is. Cons: She’s a thirsty girl; third row impedes cargo space; transmission’s tall gearing can make life more difficult than it needs to be off-road, especially at higher attitudes.
More than any other vehicle, the Toyota Land Cruiser’s reputation is overlanding. Since they first went into production in 1951, Land Cruisers have been favorites of explorers, farmers, militaries, armed militias, and everything in between because of their capability, durability, and reliability.
The current Land Cruiser is getting on in years and is on the bigger side, but it’s tough to beat this package. Its 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 is backed up by locking center and rear differentials, Multi-Terrain Select, a neat turn assist feature negating its size disadvantage, and the fantastic-riding hydraulic suspension. The functionally identical (though approach angle–challenged) Lexus LX 570 is also available. Skip the third-row package to put its 1,320 pound payload capacity to good use.
Honorable Mentions:
2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty Tremor
Price: $53,390 Pros: Nothing here can haul as much as far as the F-350 Tremor. Cons: Like the Power Wagon and Raptor, the Tremor is massive. It’s thirsty, too.
Although we’ve yet to go overlanding with the new Ford Super Duty Tremor, early impressions off-road are promising. Ford’s answer to the Power Wagon, the Tremor is available in F-250 and F-350 forms and capable of hauling up to 3,890 pounds. Powertrains include a monstrous 7.3-liter V-8 with 430 hp or a 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8 with 475 hp. The Tremor package gives the Super Duty an off-road-oriented suspension with a lift, a locking rear and limited-slip front differential, and massive 35-inch off-road tires.
2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro
Price: $45,055 Pros: Great ride quality, tidy dimensions, and a decent payload. Cons: Poor powertrain calibration and lack of low-end grunt; cramped cabin, especially for taller drivers.
The Tacoma TRD Pro is arguably the most popular overland vehicle in the U.S. There’s a lot we like about the Tacoma—chiefly the bits it shares with the 4Runner, such as its comfy Fox Shox, Multi-Terrain Select system, snorkel, tidy dimensions, and 1,175-pound payload. We’re less fond of the Tacoma’s underpowered 278-hp 3.5-liter V-6, jerky transmission, and cramped cabin; it’s capable stock, but nowhere near as capable as it needs to be. Even so, with those caveats, the Tacoma TRD Pro is certainly worthy of consideration.

Le Salon de Detroit, le dernier en hiver

Il y a presque exactement trente ans de cela, je prenais le train pour me rendre, seul, à Windsor en Ontario. Mon but? Traverser la rivière et passer deux jours à la toute première édition Internationale du Salon de l’auto de Detroit, le tout premier North American International Auto Show. À ma connaissance, il n’y avait que moi du Québec avec mon ami d’alors (le défunt) Jacques Rainville. C’était l’année des grands dévoilements incluant celui du prototype de la Dodge Viper! Le reste, bien entendu, c’est, comme on dit, de l’histoire.
Au moment d’écrire ces lignes, je reviens de la 30e édition du Salon de Detroit, la dernière qui se sera passée en hiver. Le Salon sera de retour en 2020 mais au mois de juin sous la forme d’un grand happening. Et comme si j’avais voulu célébrer l’Évènement, je me suis rendu en train à Windsor (j’ai vécu trop de problèmes avec la neige et la météo hivernale au cours des dernières années que plus jamais je ne voulais y aller en avion et encore moins en voiture). Et pour me remémorer la première fois, j’y ai passé une soirée avec mon grand ami Walter McCall qui, il y a trente ans, m’avait accueilli à la gare de Windsor où il demeurait et où il travaillait en tant que directeur des Relations publiques chez Chrysler Canada. Rendu à 80 ans, ce diable de petit homme est toujours actif car il publie un ou deux livres par année sur les camions de pompier (vous pourriez en vérifier les titres sur Internet). Il est à composer actuellement un volume sur le service des incendies de la ville de Windsor.
J’ai donc participé à cette première journée de presse du Salon de Detroit, la seule où il y aurait des dévoilements de nouvelles voitures. Depuis des années que la qualité de ce Salon décline mais cette fois, ce fut sans contredit la pire. C’est comme si les grands constructeurs locaux avaient décidé de bouder le Salon de leur propre ville au profit de ceux de Los Angeles et peut-être même New York. Toutefois, pour l’amateur de technologie, il fallait être à ce Salon de Detroit pour y voir ce qui s’en vient au cours des prochaines années…presque un voyage dans le futur…presque!
Voici donc un court relevé de ce que j’ai pu voir au Salon de Detroit, le North American International Auto Show (qui fut aussi boudé, comme bien d’autres salons internationaux, par les constructeurs allemands comme Mercedes, BMW et Porsche et par quelques autres grands noms comme Mini, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda et autres!)

Cadillac a profité du Salon de Detroit pour y dévoiler (la veille de la journée de presse) son nouveau grand VUM, le XT6 et pour y annoncer que la marque sera le fer de lance de General Motors en matière de véhicules électriques, (Photo Éric Descarries)

Ford a ouvert le bal de la journée en lançant sa nouvelle génération d’Explorer tant en version Interceptor de police qu’en version hybride ou encore en version de performance ST mue par un V6 de 3,0 litres à double turbocompresseur de quelques 400 chevaux. (Photo Éric Descarries)

Ford a aussi fait le bonheur des amateurs de performance en dévoilant la version 500 GT de sa Mustang Shelby. Son V8 suralimenté de 5,2 litres fait plus de 700 chevaux et il vient avec une boîte à double embrayage. (Photo Éric Descarries)

Les amateurs de camionnettes ont été bien servis par FCA qui a profité de ce Salon pour nous faire connaître la version Heavy Duty de ses nouveaux Ram 2500 et 3500. Si le moteur de base de ces pick-up traditionnels demeure le V8 Hemi à essence de 6,4 litres, le moteur turbodiesel optionnel Cummins de 6,7 litres développe désormais quelque 1000 livres de couple ce qui fait du Ram Heavy Duty le plus puissant pick-up de sa catégorie avec une capacité de remorquage de plus de 35 000 livres! La légendaire Supra de Toyota a été officiellement lancée au Salon de Detroit. Développée conjointement avec BMW, le superbe coupé sportif a aussi été montré aux côtés des versions de compétition et NASCAR (Xfinity). Dans le cas de cette dernière, sa carrosserie ne ressemble pas du tout à celle de la Supra de production, surtout de l’arrière… (Photo Éric Descarries)

Quant au constructeur allemand Volkswagen (probablement le seul de cette origine européenne sur place), c’était à son tour de dévoiler une nouvelle auto, soit la grande Passat redessinée pour 2020. En même temps VW annonçait la construction d’une deuxième usine aux États- Unis juste avant de confirmer son alliance avec Ford. Ce dernier aidera VW dans le développement et la construction de pick-up intermédiaires alors que l’Allemand apportera son support au géant américain pour les plateformes de voitures électriques. On pouvait voir au stand Nissan une étude de style (une denrée très rare au Salon de Detroit de 2019) qui nous indique quelle direction le constructeur japonais compte prendre au cours des prochaines années. Chez Kia, on procédait au lancement du VUS intermédiaire Telluride basé, en grande partie, sur son cousin, le Palisades de Hyundai. Mû par un V6 de 3,8 litres, le Telluride affiche une ligne légèrement plus robuste que le Palisades et le constructeur le démontrait en offrant aux visiteurs une courte ballade en circuit hors-route dans le salon même ! D’autre part, chez Hyundai, c’était au tour de l’excitante Elantra GT de se montrer en version de production de finition N. Ainsi, le constructeur sud-coréen compte se lancer, à son tour, dans des versions de performance de certaines de ses autos aux aptitudes un peu plus sportives. (Photo Éric Descarries)

Enfin, c’était le retour du constructeur chinois GAC avec ses nombreux VUS et sa fourgonnette qui annonçait ses premiers pas en Amérique du Nord. Il était question de ses premiers bureaux en Californie en plus d’une étude de style d’un VUS Voilà une annonce qu’il ne faudra pas prendre à la légère… (Photo Éric Descarries)

Je ne peux passer sous silence la présentation de l’étude de style QX Inspiration d’Infiniti que j’ai malheureusement manqué. Mais ce n’était pas de ma faute! En effet, le véhicule, semble-t-il, n’a pu démarrer et Infiniti a décidé d’annuler sa présentation sur les autos électriques. J’ai dû quitter le Salon pour retourner à mon hôtel. L’auto a finalement été présentée et plus encore, elle a gagné les mérites de Meilleure étude de style et de Plus bel intérieur du Salon. Mais c’était un peu trop tard. La foule n’y était plus! Oh! N’oublions pas de mentionner la présence du constructeur indien Mahindra au Salon de Detroit. Celui-ci y avait un stand intéressant où l’on pouvait voir le fameux Roxor, une sorte de réplique de Jeep des premières générations mue par un petit quatre cylindres diesel. Capable d’une vitesse maximale de 45 m/h, ��ce sympathique petit véhicule ne peut légalement pas rouler sur nos routes. Il s’agit là d’une sorte de petit VTT côte-à-côte amusant. Il y avait aussi au stand Mahindra une petite fourgonnette (?) commercialisée qu’en Inde (mue par un quatre cylindres diesel et reposant sur un châssis-cadre rigide), la Marazzo, qui pouvait y justifier sa présence car elle a été développée aux studios de la compagnie au Michigan! Au cas où cela vous intéresserait, juste avant l’ouverture du Salon, l’association des journalistes nord-américains a dévoilé ses prix pour les Auto, VUS et Camionnette de l’année. Le Grand Prix, celui de l’auto, a été à la Genesis G70, celui du VUS au Hyundai Kona et celui de la camionnette au Ram 1500…J’approuve…
