The Limited Edition V10 Challenger
When it comes to engine choices for the Dodge Challenger, we are used to the usual V8, V6 or even, we dare say it, a four-cylinder. But, in 2010 the Mopar side of the business decided to drop a 8.4 liter V10 engine from the Dodge Viper into a Challenger. The end result was the Challenger Drag Pak, aimed at the racing side of the hobby.
This limited edition engine package for the Dodge Challenger provided 630HP, but anecdotal evidence says that this power rating could be far higher. As the vehicle was aimed at NHRA racing, buyers had to sign an agreement stating that they wouldn’t use the vehicle on public highways. Not that you would ever want to, considering all the modern luxuries had been stripped out such as power steering, air conditioning or even rear seats. Plus the addition of racing slicks wouldn’t have given much traction on the average open road.
As the V10 Challenger was aimed at the racing brigade, optional extras such as a roll cage, mesh windows and safety harnesses were available for an extra $7,900. For any other color other than the primer white, the cost would be $6900. Any type of decals would be $700, added to the buy-it-now price of $85,000 at the time.
Only 70 examples were ever produced of the V10 Challenger, making it a definite future rarity.

Mopar y Dodge//SRT presentaron en el Salón de la Asociación del Mercado de Equipamiento Especializado 2019 (SEMA, por sus siglas en inglés) la cuarta generación del Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, un vehículo con un paquete especial incorporado de fábrica (‘Package Car’) para uso exclusivo en pistas de arrancones. El Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak 2020 es un Challenger dirigido a pilotos de arrancones que compiten en la clase Sportsman de los campeonatos NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) y NMCA (National Muscle Car Association). A partir de mejoras realizadas sobre la tercera generación, la nueva versión del Challenger Drag Pak ofrece a estos pilotos la posibilidad de contar con un paquete completo listo para competir o con una variedad de módulos instalables en su Dodge Challenger para pistas de arrancones.
“Mopar y Dodge//SRT han colaborado estrechamente para hacer de este Challenger Drag Pak basado en el modelo de producción no sólo un reconocible competidor en la pista de arrancones, sino también una verdadera pieza de colección para los entusiastas de Mopar,” señaló Mark Bosanac, Responsable de Servicio, Partes y Atención al Cliente de Mopar, FCA Norteamérica. “El legado de Mopar en la pista ha sido posible gracias a mujeres y hombres que pusieron todo para ser los mejores. Al igual que el Dodge Challenger actual el cual llama la atención con un diseño que se remonta a la era original de los muscle car de la década de 1970, el esquema de color rojo, blanco y azul en el Challenger Drag Pak de cuarta generación irradia un aire moderno con un toque de nostalgia. El paquete de gráficos está dominado por el logo azul de Mopar y por el distintivo rojo ‘dragpak’ en los paneles laterales sobre los rines traseros. Una franja roja envuelve la fascia trasera del vehículo conectando ambos distintivos. Una amplia franja de color azul, flanqueada por finas líneas rojas, recorre el vehículo a lo largo desde de la fascia delantera hasta el borde de la tapa de la cajuela, a través del techo. Este detalle estético contribuye a remarcar la notable anchura de este Challenger Drag Pak, completa los diferentes juegos opcionales de franjas que Mopar ofrece en exclusiva para la gama Challenger. Una banda azul, flanqueada en paralelo por una delgada raya roja, recorre los cuartos inferiores de los paneles de la carrocería. “Queremos que luzca tan espectacular que cuando el cliente lo compre desee correr con estos gráficos tan icónicos y llamativos,” aseguró Mark Trostle, Responsable de Rendimiento, Diseño de vehículos de pasajeros y vehículos utilitarios para FCA Norteamérica. “La gente de Mopar está orgullosa de su herencia e imagen y quieren mostrar ambas”. La arquitectura del Challenger Drag Pak se basa en la plataforma del Dodge Challenger de anchura estándar, que se fabrica en la Planta de Ensamble de Brampton, en Ontario. Una jaula de seguridad integrada mediante soldadura y conforme a las especificaciones de la SFI Foundation está homologada para realizar tiempos en el cuarto de milla de 7.50 segundos.
Como novedad en esta cuarta generación del Drag Pak, el conjunto del eje trasero Strange utiliza amortiguadores ajustables tipo coilovers, cuatro brazos con horquilla y barra estabilizadora. Las barras antiwheelie y el soporte para paracaídas forman parte del equipamiento estándar. En la parte delantera, el exclusivo travesaño que protege al motor contribuye a rebajar el centro de gravedad y permite un mejor reparto de pesos. La suspensión delantera también incluye amortiguadores Bilstein ajustables. El Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak 2020, impulsado por un motor HEMI® V-8 supercargado de 354 pulgadas cúbicas, cuenta con una transmisión T400 de tres velocidades con selector manual Kwik-Shift, un eje de transmisión de peso liviano, frenos de competición delanteros y traseros, asientos Racetech, centro de distribución de potencia Smartwire completamente programable, así como un nuevo y exclusivo conjunto de neumáticos y rines de peso liviano. Otra de las novedades para 2020 es su cofre que imita el diseño del Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, con toma de aire y extractores de calor. Las raíces del Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak se remontan a principios de los 60 cuando comenzaron a salir de fábrica los modelos Max Wedge, los primeros vehículos con paquete especial incorporado de fábrica producidos por la compañía. En 1968, los Dodge Dart y Plymouth Barracuda contaron con una versión ‘Package Car’ con motor HEMI 426 para las pistas de arrancones. Estos vehículos continuaron compitiendo en la clase Super Stock /Automatic-HEMI (SS/AH) del campeonato Sportsman de la NHRA y en el Mopar HEMI Challenge, que se celebra todos los años durante los NHRA US Nationals en el Lucas Oil Raceway de Indianapolis, Indiana, desde 2001. En 2008, Mopar anunció el primer vehículo listo para carreras de arrancones con paquete especial, incorporado de fábrica en 40 años: el V-8 Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak. En 2009, las 100 unidades producidas se vendieron en su totalidad. El programa 2010 del Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak ofrecía a los pilotos un opcional motor HEMI de 6.4 litros. En 2011, Mopar introdujo un motor V-10 en el paquete especial y se convirtió así en el primer OEM (fabricante de equipamiento original) en ofrecer un vehículo de este tipo con un motor V-10 de más de 500 pulgadas cúbicas.
La tercera generación del Challenger Drag Pak, lanzada en 2015, significó la introducción del primer HEMI 354 supercargado, así como de la tercera generación del HEMI 426 naturalmente aspirado. Este ‘Package Car’, salido de fábrica y sin necesidad de ajustes, era capaz de recorrer el cuarto de milla en 8 segundos. Leah Pritchett capturó el Campeonato Mundial NHRA Factory Stock Showdown 2018, obtuvo tres victorias y registró la primera carrera oficial de 7 segundos en su clase con el Challenger Drag Pak de tercera generación. Ese mismo año, Geoff Turk logró el Campeonato Mundial NMCA Factory Super Cars 2018 con el Challenger Drag Pak y también registró un tiempo oficial de 7 segundos por primera vez en la clase.

The Ultimate 2020 Dodge Challenger Buying Guide

If you’ve had the slightest inclination to buy into the wonderful world of muscle cars, then the Dodge Challenger should be on your list. The consistency of the platform has been proven, as it’s now over a decade old and due for a near future, design shakeup. However, if you want the purist form of modern-day muscle cars, then the Dodge Challenger has more than enough modern amenities and power to rival other performance vehicles.
Lined up against its nearest competitors, the Mustang and Camaro, the Dodge Challenger has a few ace points. The Hellcat Redeye is the most powerful with a huge 797 horsepower, an all wheel drive version, widebody now as standard and although it’s traditionally optimized for straight-line speed, it’s very capable of blasting round a track and roomy enough to be a daily driver.
What’s new…? Adding extra features every year is a common trait for the Challenger. 2020 brings new wheel designs for all trim levels accept the SXT, with a bunch of exclusive colors. The wide-body look is now standard and the interior has also been given some extra love with stitched door and dash panels, carbon fiber and faux suede trim and Alcantara for R/T and Scat Pak models.
While the interior of the Challenger may not be as distinctive as other makes, the basic modern amenities are plentiful. A 7-inch touchscreen and 8.4-inch available for all trim levels. Easy to use and not available in the Mustang or Camaro. Plus, practicality, which you don’t normally associate with a muscle car.
The Challenger is longer, wider and has more interior space than the Camaro and the Mustang. Plenty of space on the back for full-size adults and an ample trunk of 16.2-cubic-foot. In other words, the Challenger has the performance specs. and the space to be a daily driver. Like the old mantra of muscle cars, a mid-sized sedan, with topline performance.
Power Although the Hellcat variants get the most press, there are plenty of choices in the range to suit all pockets. The SXT and GT have a 3.6-liter V6 providing 305HP, with a 0-60mph time of 6 seconds. All wheel drive versions are available in these models which come with an eight speed automatic. Fuel economy works out at 23 mpg combined and 21 mpg for the AWD model.
The Challenger R/T is a good middle ground choice with a 5.7-liter V8, 372HP and a standard eight speed automatic transmission or optional six speed manual with a few extra horses. Fuel economy for the automatic is 19 mpg combined and the manual 18 mpg combined.
Next up is the R/T Scat Pack with a 6.4-liter V8 and 485HP providing a 0-60mph time of just above four seconds, with fuel economy for the auto being 18 mpg and 17mpg for the manual. The Scat Pack also has a 1320 package, optimized for the drag strip.
At the top of the range comes the Hellcat with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, 717HP, manual or automatic and fuel economy we don’t talk about. Tuning outfits such as Hennessey Performance have been ramping up the power to 1,000HP if that’s the way you want to go.
At the top of the heap is the Hellcat Redeye, which has a lot of the essence of the limited edition Dodge Demon, with 797HP, 0-60 in 3.4 seconds and most importantly a quarter-mile in 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 203 mph. If you want the ultimate in modern muscle car, you need not look any further. The 2.7-liter belt-driven supercharger gives 14.5 psi of boost and comes with a TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic transmission. Available in both the regular widebody versions, with the widebody having 305-width Pirelli P-Zero tires. The irony is that the Redeye can be used for the regular grocery trip, just be aware that the fuel bill will cost more than what you buy, but it will be worth it.
Driving Specs. are one thing, but living with a car on a daily basis is another. The initial thing to bear in mind is all the old cliches of the muscle car are long gone. The ethos is still there, but as for design, power and performance, it’s all modern amenities. As above, the interior may not be as plush as some other medium sized sedans, but the general idea is that you’re getting supercar like power in an affordable package. Therefore, the monies more on the performance.
Having so much power, especially owning the Hellcat means that they always wants to let rip, but it’s equally happy tootling around if you don’t want to put pedal to metal. Which model you go for is usually dependent on budget, but there are also plenty of package options available with each model to find tune your choices. The Performance Handling Package and Dynamics Package tweak things like the brakes, suspension and tires and the widebody option is now a must for the extra beefy look. Options are plentiful and don’t add a heap more onto the initial price.
As for the driving experience, all the Challenger models are comfortable cruisers, which can let you shred the tires at a moments notice. The suspension setup makes for a comfortable ride and there’s no denying the optimise straight-line speed. Because the Challenger is keeping to its roots, it may not be the most track friendly vehicle due to its heavyweight nature, but in reality your gaining more fun down the straights than round the corners, which is the basic template. Dragstrip optimized, rather than track friendly focused.
This means that the Challenger pips the Mustang and the Camaro for better, general usability. If you want an ultra nimble, two seater, which you take to the track every so often, look elsewhere. But, the Challenger gives massive amounts of power and performance which can more readily be used an a daily basis.
Think of it this way, the Dodge Challenger represents a certain way of thinking. At the top end of the range, it’s not as finely fettled as a supercar, but it has similar performance. It may not be as nimble as a performance two seater, but it can sure keep up and be driven home with all the family and the shopping. Plus, especially with the Hellcat, it represents value for money considering the power and performance.
Expect to pay somewhere near $25,690 for the base SXT and $72,745 for the Redeye. All Challengers come with a reasonable amount of standard equipment, such as push-button start and proximity entry, six airbags, rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, Uconnect touchscreen, six-speaker sound system and Apple and Android connectivity. There’s also a good deal of safety features such as blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control.
