The Perfect Marriage - Real Simple, Aug 10
Is there such a thing as the perfect marriage? Sure there is, or rather there is such a thing as the appearance of a perfect marriage. You know them-the couple that never fights, always perfectly put together, kids always perfectly put together, and then the kids leave and they get divorced. Why? Because their marriage was built on nothing more than looking the part. Looking like a perfectly married couple was more important than putting together a solid marriage.
My marriage isn't perfect-far from it. Roy can drive me batty with his sarcastic remarks, and I know he wants to pull out his hair when I start in with my nagging. We have fought some ugly battles in the past, but we're still here! Still married, still happy, still loving one another. I don't love him because he's a good father, or a good provider, I love him because he looks at me sometimes and what I see in his eyes is the same unbridled lust I saw 12 years ago. He makes me feel beautiful, whether I have on a cocktail dress or running shorts and a t-shirt. We laugh at the same things and he rarely ridicules me when I cry during a sappy movie. He appreciates the fact that I have a mind of my own, and has never chastised me for speaking it (ok, rarely has he chastised me for speaking it). Marriage isn't easy, it takes work. My first marriage failed because I was young, and assumed that IF it was meant to be everything would be fine. That isn't the case, and for those of you that are married you know that. You get married to one person, and if you are lucky that person changes..no, I don't mean they start drinking or using drugs, visiting prostitutes (though some do), what I mean is they grow. The mature, they continue to learn new things and develop new interests. And IF you don't work at keeping your marriage strong and interesting, you grow apart.
Roy has developed a passion for saltwater fish tanks, it isn't something I am particularly interested in, though I love looking at our 75 gallon one. I tease him about it, but the fact is why shouldn't I encourage this? He enjoys it, and the one in our family room truly is beautiful. So, we go to the stores together, and though I complain, I do appreciate him taking into account my opinion on a particular coral or fish. Occasionally, he lets me pick out a new piece for our tank, and he always lets me name the fish we do buy. In return, he has done what he can to encourage my interests. He rarely says anything when I buy a new book or magazine, he has driven me to a store that sells cross stitch supplies over 60 miles away from our house, and he willingly edits all my writing. We take turns picking which movie to go see (although since it is sometimes a year between our last theater visit we often forget who picked the last one!), he helps with dinner, and I stay out of his way when he works on the yard.in short, he is perfect… for me. He isn't a perfect person, but he is the perfect husband for me.
One of my hobbies is buying any magazine that interests me, though in my defense I do read them all, and I ran across an interesting article in the August 2010 issue of "Real Simple." It's entitled "10 Ways to Make Your Marriage Divorce-Proof." This article was actually written by Samantha Bee and Jason Jones, a husband and wife team that work together as correspondents for "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." So what are their ten tips?
Realize that if you can agree on what constitutes a clean room, you can agree on anything-I agree with this! Luckily Roy isn't that picky, as I am not the best housekeeper in the world, and I have found that although we don't always agree we can usually come to SOME sort of compromise.
If you're irritated by your partner, imagine him/her as a small child-I can't do this while we are arguing, as I am too busy wondering why we are arguing, but occasionally when Roy is sleeping I look at him and see the little boy he probably once was, and my heart melts all over again. So while I don't do this while I am annoyed, remembering why we love our spouse/SO at any point in time is still a good thing!
No Fisticuffs in public-ok, now we all know you should NEVER hit someone right? Violence is bad.but seriously, they are simply saying don't fight in public. I will say this, I don't care if people know I am mad at my husband, IF we do fight in public I usually say something that IF people hear me embarrasses myself, and I don't like embarrassing myself, so this is a tip I will try to remember in the future.
Marry someone with a backbone who appreciates that you have one of your own-DUH! Who wants a lapdog? Who wants someone with no opinion, no courage, no mind of their own? And why would ANYONE want to be with someone that didn't encourage them to speak their own mind? Defend themselves or those that needed defending?
Procrastinate-In other words, don't put everything before your marriage. Sure sometimes the kids need to come first, sometimes there is a huge project at work that must get done, but not every weekend. Not every moment of the every day. Your marriage has to come first occasionally.
Have Sex with Each other- Kind of a no brainer, ya know?
Accept that everybody needs alone time- this is why parents read in the bathroom! Come on, is a toilet really that comfortable? No! But a bathroom is one place where it is always acceptable to lock the door.
If you have to fight, walk and fight-Hey! We are all supposed to get at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day, if you have to fight why not kill two birds with one stone?
Let your spouse in on 90% of your day to day routine-No, they aren't saying spend 90% of your day with your spouse. The idea is that you should be willing to share 90% of your day with your spouse, and your spouse should realize that the other 10% is just for you.
When you buy gifts for each other, give them at least a full minute of thought-this is tough for us. Roy doesn't mind surprises, on the other hand, he never expects anything, so he is always appreciative of any little thing the kids and I do for him. I do not like surprises, but I expect Roy to get me something, and am then annoyed when he does not, so this is kind of a tough one for him to win.
These are all good tips, and the article was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek, or rather that is how I read it, but the bottom line is marriage isn't easy, but then if it was would it really be worth having?
