Unfortunately, bad news for all comic book fans, the genius artist for Disney comics, Maximino Tortajada Aguilar, passed away last week. He is from Spain and is the brother of the equally brilliant artist José Miguel Tortajada Aguilar who is also an artist working for Disney and Egmont editing Disney comics. While José Miguel worked more on Mickey Mouse comics, Maximino Tortajada Aguilar worked more on Donald Duck comics combining various styles depending on the publisher and given outcomes. He was born on 24-X-1961 in Barcelona, ​​and he started his career back in 1980 and continued his career until this year. He also drew on the OG Ducktales comics, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Talespin and other Disney cartoons that made it into the comics, as he also drew for Egmont drawing for Dutch and Scandinavian comics. He is certainly one of my favorite artists and it is a great shame that he left us on August 20th of this year. lso bad news for all fans of Disney (Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck) comics. Yesterday, the genius artist for Disney comics, who did commission art, Sergio Asteriti, died. He was born on February 13, 1930 in Venice, and began his career in 1952. "Sergio Asteriti was born in Venice, and studied at the Scuola di Magistero d'Arte, section Publicity. In 1952, he moved to Milan, where he was employed by the advertising agency S.P.I.N.T.A. The agency folded two years later, and Asteriti turned to comics. He made his comics debut with the 'Bingo Bongo' series at the publishing house Alpe in 1955. He soon expanded his activities and did illustration work for various publishers and magazines. Asteriti joined the art studios of Roy d'Ami in the late 1950s. There, he drew for the British Fleetway agency ('Fun in Toyland', 'Freddie Frog', etc.) and for Il Corriere dei Piccoli, where he took over the 'Formichino' series from Roberto Sgrilli.

Asteriti has been an artist of Disney comics for Topolino since 1963. From 1974, he also took on the writing of Disney stories. He has mainly done stories with 'Mickey Mouse', but also other characters, such as 'Uncle Scrooge', 'Super Goof', 'Gilbert', 'Tanti Auguri', 'The Prince and the Pauper', 'Indiana Pips'." Taken from the Lambiek encyclopedia. He certainly contributed a lot to the Mickey Mouse universe. He died on August 27, 2024. Kudos to him for his truly outstanding work! Rest in peace! Amen.

Disney Comics (2022-?)

Yes, we must publish those Disney Global stories too and, after publishing some of those on Topolino, Panini decided to make a spin-off just for them (a bit like LTB Young in Germany). Its fate is unclear, because recent issues have been reprisals of older volumes, so it's probably dead.

Disney Hero (2019-)

Yes, it's a collection of random stories linked by the character on the cover. In 2024 it was dedicated all year to Donald Duck, for his 90th birthday, covering his interaction with other characters. It seems that this Donald-centric format will continue in the forst months of 2025 too.

Disney Love (2019-)

This is part of an effort from Panini to have more thematic comics to be published during the summer. Disney Love, in fact, it's published monthly only on July and August every year (except for 2019, when it had a Valentine's day issue and a June issue too). It collects mostly stories from the old female-centered publications of the past (Minni, Minni & co., Minni amica del cuore), plus a minority of stories from Topolino.

Topolino in Giallo (2021-)

This is part of an effort from Panini to have more thematic comics to be published during the summer. Topolino in Giallo, in fact, it's published monthly only on June, July and August every year. It collects Mickey detective stories, plus one Egmont Mickey story never published before, per issue. Contrary to most of these titles the covers are new and all done by Davide Cesarello.

Disney Team (2021-)

Yes, it's a collection of random stories linked by the theme on the cover. It is supposed to alternate between duck stories and mice stories, in fact the name changes every volume between Paperino in team and Topolino in team, but the divide may not be so clear.

Disneyssimo (2019-)

Yes, it's a collection of random stories linked by the theme on the cover. It has 7 issues per year: Invernissimo (for winter), Primaverissima (for spring), Risatissima (for April's Fool time), Estatissima (for summer), Vacanzissima (for the summer holiday season), Scuolissima (for back to school time), Natalissimo (for Christmas time).

Paper Mitologia (2024-)

This was supposed to be a miniseries, collecting that mythology Disney Global series and other mythology stories. The selection has been soon precarious, collecting early on stories with a weak connection to mythology, but appearently it has prove itself to be successfull, because they are extending it, making Le dodici fatiche e 1/2 di Pippercole the main series of the future issues.

Disney Play/Topolino Junior (2020-)

This is a title for younger readers, so featuring games, articles and shorter stories, some of those made for this magazine, others are reprints of older Topolino stories, others are foreign tales.

Disney Special Events (2019-)

I don't know how to describe it. This is the randomest of random titles, as much that I would say it's not a title per se, but a collection of different initiatives that did not meet the criteria to embark in a burocratic hustle to register a new publication. We need to publish those thematic hardcover small books attached to Topolino (i Topolibri)? Let's publish them here! We need to publish the new Darkwing Duck volume, but we don't want to revive the older Disney Premiere title where it was featured? No problem, toss it here! We need to publish a reprint of Epic Mickey? Say no more! We need to continue publishing the Definitive Collection edition of Fantomius because there are so many people who still collect it, but the Definitive Collection closed? Let's do volumes which are aestehically identical to those and publish them under this label! We need a volume of Area 15 because there is a fair event in Milan, but Topolino Extra had been paused at the time? Let's do a volume ina completely different format and publish it here! We need some books to exploit the UEFA European Championship, without naming it? We have some space here! A calendar? Here! A cover collection volume? HERE! A Snowhite book for the anniversary? Dont worry! A cheap edition of Life and Times? Again, we hare room! And I've not covered every random book this series features. The one thing about it it's that these are, generally more curated books, not really some cheap random ones, but still there is no coherent lineup.

a sketch i just made of new ocs, Allium Löwenzahn and Troia Chrysalis + the imp twins in their girl form! Allium and Troia go to RSA, and Troia might or might not be one of the main reasons RSA is known for their flashy and cocky students.

Allium is a trans boy, he goes strictly by he/him pronouns and female pronouns make him very uncomfortable. Troia is a demiboy and prefers either he/him or they/them.

(RSA in my mind is the GAYEST school ever, the rainbow is very real there)

ITALY - Part 2

Disney De Luxe (2014-)

Disney De Luxe (originally Topolino Limited De Luxe Edition) was the first prestige reprint title in the Panini era. And one of the more flawed ones, in my opinion, because it reprints Topolino stories in a format that has nothing to do with Topolino. The diagonal of the page doesn't match the one of the weekly magazine, so a lot of blank space is needed on top and on the bottom. There wasn't a clear definition about what kind of stories the title was supposed to collect, probably the most relevant recent ones, the ones with a sophisticated artwork, but recently the devide has been set and now it showcases only parodies (both modern and old) and Pk stories.

Disney Collection (2021-)

This is pretty easy to present: it's the title dedicated to the Glenat volumes. Thanks to the success of this series, we have been able to be on par with the french issues, after that the previous publisher, Giunti (yes, in Italy there are two Disney publishers, it's complicated) had given up.

Humour Collection (2022-)

Humour Collection is a prestige title dedicated to collecting the corpus of stories of reknown Disney authors specialized in comedy and nonsense. The two authors covered since its inception have been Silvia Ziche and Enrico Faccini. Nearly every story written by Ziche has been collected (with the notable exception of Topokolossal, but Disney has a problem with Star Wars parodies nowadays) and now the baton passed to Faccini, whose works, contrary to Ziche, are being collected chronologically. The books offer a lot of extra material, behind the scenes and interviews with the authors. The curators have been Davide Del Gusto for the Ziche volumes and Valerio Paccagnella for the Faccini ones.

Thriller Collection (2022-)

This is the twin series of the Humour Collection. The format is basically the same and the curator was initially the same person, Davide Del Gusto (who then left the role to Marco Travaglini). The author to whom the books are dedicated is Casty and yes, this is effectively a Casty Library. No end is in sight, as his corpus is big and he is still in the business.

Topolino Extra (2020-)

Another set of twins here. Topolino Extra is the title dedicated to reprinting the major stories and series published during the Bertani tenure on Topolino. Its purpose has become weaker overtime, as other series of books have started to publish these stories, but the identity is still strong. Like all the books in this post, it is a HC series with some behind the scenes of the stories. It appearantely isn't faring so well and its cancellation was announced, but it has recently been revived.

Topolino Gold (2020-)

This title serves similar purpose to Topolino Extra, but it is dedicated to pre-Bertani stories, some very old, others more recent. There isn't a clear definition of what can fit this series or not, but definitely its goal is to attract readers who want a prestinge edition of a reknown story, providing some nice cash with limited investments. But, unlike many, I don't complain about it, I like pretty volumes.

Le serie Imperdibili (2022-)

When Definitive Edition ended we all were left hanging with one question: where will the series we like end up being published? And Serie Imperdibili was the answer. The title's goal is to collect the most important Disney series in a prestige edition with lots of behind the scenes and in depth analysis. It started with the Tops Stories by Pezzin and the Tales around the Fireplace by Cimino, moving on later to Fantomius by Gervasio and the Chronicles from the Frontier by Pezzin.

Grandi Autori (~2014-)

Grandi Autori has a long story, despite the fact that I chose to state that its inseptions roots back to only 2014. originally it was called Speciale Disney, and it featured random books dedicated to random themes, what we in Italy call Vattelapesca. But something changed in 2014: among these Vattelapesca issues, a book dedicated to Tito Faraci was published. It was not the first time that a volume collecting Faraci stories was poublished with his name on the cover and this title wanted to go back to those earlier one-shot collections (which in the past were distributed in the book-shop market); as previously we had Topolino Noir and La nera di Topolino, this time Panini chose the name of Topolino Black Edition. Due to its success, they continued to publish similar books dedicated to important authors in what was informally known as the Color Editions. The iedea that came to be was to have multiple 4 books seasons: we had for the first slate Back (Faraci), Platinum (Casty), Gold (Artibani), Diamond (Marconi). Then we had a Fluo slate, featuring Fluo proper (Faccini), Pink (Bosco/Ziche), Evergreen (Pezzin/Cavazzano), Sunny (Enna). Subsequently we had the series Classic Edition, Extra Edition, Flash Edition, Writers Edition, Metal Edition and Neon Edition. These series had a similar format, collecting stories throughout am author's carreer, with some articles written by editors or colleagues, but with minimal insight on the works and more a personal outlook of the guy or gal the book was dedicated to (let's be frank: the only woman featured has been Silvia Ziche). Finally, in 2023, the format was revamped again: the name was changed to Grandi Autori, avoiding the renaming for every 4 authors slate of books, the graphics were made more sober and less kitch and the approach was more focused on the study of these people's accomplishments, their style and biography. It was clear that the idea was to do a remake of Maestri Disney, the famous and celebrated sult series that was published between the 1990s and the 2000s, for modern audiences. Initially curated by Davide Del Gusto, now the articles are written by Alberto Brambilla.

I think we will need a 4 part series, because next one will be about the current Vattelapesca titles, while the 4th one will cover the book-shop editions.
