Pani Review: Joju George Writes an Extremely Engaging Revenge Drama Despite Minor Flaws of Underwriting

Actor-turned Director Joju George’s debut as a director plays to the strengths of contemporary Malayalam dialogue-heave dramas of revenge fused with the fad of gore on screen. 

The slowburner of character introductions starts with Don Sebastian and Sijottan murdering in daylight on a crowded street. That murder could have been the easiest way to weave a revenge drama, especially after IPS of Thrissur announcing the arrival of newbies into the established God-Father-like-world of Thrissurites: Giri and his associates, who are also a family. But, Joju George doesn’t choose the convenient way. He walks the path of Malayalam cinema that it is known for, for all the right reasons. The protective husband’s ego is clashed with highly egoistic  duo, Don and Siju, who thinks less and act more, who fear less and courage more. 

“Fear is a reaction; Courage is a decision” declares Joju George as the film starts. That is the same psyche of all major characters in the movie, excluding the police. The police system has the least influence in the power hierarchy among the Gangs of Thrissur. Yet, even the almighty have to succumb to the bravest of stupidity. The acts of intruding into the home of Giriyetta and exploiting his is the stupidest act ever. However, the two newbie amateurs had made it possible. Thus the saga begins. 

Pani is a regular ego-driven intense drama. The world of Thrissur, where the classical-music loving family– the one that calls the shots of Thrissur’s real estate, makes it a more compelling and interesting world. However, Pani falls flat where it tries to make a move in the story to elevate the brave idiocy of Don and Siju. When it becomes evident that the unknown newbies and wanna-be dons of Thrissur are attempting, as well as successfully killing, one by one in the family, why doesn’t the family stay united and protect each other? Rather, they isolate each other, giving space for the killings of Don and Siju. Of course, the story might progress as intended. But, the established legacy of calling the shots in Thrissur and their expected level of tactfulness is compromised in the pursuit of running the story.

Sam CS’s music deserves the attention, but it also doesn’t push the punches that the intense drama deserves. However, it was compensated for through Ajayan Adat’s sound design. Dinesh Subbarayan’s stunt choreography and Jinto George & Venu Isc’s cinematography of racing in the streets of Thrissur are interesting to watch. A little bit of focused characterisation would have saved Pani by a lot. Despite its minor flaws of underwriting, Panu successfully engages through its intense drama throughout the film.

'June' is a 2019 Malayalam language feature film directed by Debutant Film Director Ahammed Khabeer, starring Rajisha Vijayan.....

...in the title role June. It was released on Feb 15 2019. The Screenplay was organised by Ahammed Khabeer, Libin Varghese and Jeevan Baby Mathew. It is a heartwarming story of an ordinary and very relatable girl named June and her love-life, her dreams, and her journey to discover herself. It's a Coming of age film which pretty much fills your heart with as warmth as a cup of coffee on an open terrace at 4:30 A.M. Rajisha Vijayan is convincing as 'June' and is memorable enough. Joju George (June's Father aka Panama Joy) was not acting, he was living the character and I would say if 'Inspiring' had a face then it is him. ❤

Aswathy Menon (June's Mom aka Mini Joy) pretty much will remind you of your own Mom and she proves her talent really well. Sarjano Khalid ( June's first love aka Noel) is pretty much above of what you would expect of a newcomer in the film industry. All the other newcomers too did a commendable job. Arjun Ashokan (aka June's 'stalker' or rather Anand who is madly in love with June) did an incredible job). ❤

All the Songs featured are guaranteed to make you love the film even more. The whole team of 'June' did justice to the genre of the film unlike some other films which were released along with it belonging to the same genre I.e 'Oru Adaar love' directed by Omar Lulu. To be honest, I tried watching 'Oru adaar love' but couldn't sit through even the first half an hour of the film let alone the first half. ❤

Anyways, But I guarantee that 'June' will certainly make it to your list of favorites, if you like School Romances and Aesthetic Sceneries.❤

Dream Big, Work Big & you earn big - a prologue - " Jojuettan "

You would have felt strange seeing the title a prologue. For "Jojuettan" its just a beginning. it has all started a few months back only. Cinema lets everyone reign who is ready to stand and fight. To wait for our time is the most exciting part of cinema. It can count two or three years or can even take upto decades.  

Powerful men Come from Powerful Places. JoJu George, A Thrissur Native debuted in cinema in mid 90s. Since then he has been part of several movies where his roles were not even recognized. From a Junior Artist who doesnt even hold an identity for his characters to Jojuettan, it took almost 20 years. Even though his role inPattalam as a witty soldier was recognised the portrial of a new gen director in " The Best Actor" got him to talks. But Minimon in Action Hero Biju &  Rafeek in Lukka Chuppi brought out the natural perfomer in him. Directors of this generation has been really keen on filtering fresh talents for their charactersrather than casting usual actors. Joju was such a brillaint found by the directors. The kind of easeness he brings into his characters is what movie goers of thisgeneration prefer and that worked in favour of him. In Lukka Chuppi he is seen as a henpecked husband who is fed up with his annoying wife still loves her a lot. The three cop roles in Action Hero Biju, Njan Marykutty and Highly acclaimed Joseph itself shows his versatality. While the first one is a witty police officer, the one in Njan Marykutty is a crook, but when it comes to Joseph he is a brilliant police officer who is a complete hero material. He was brillaint especially in the instant hit Pumuthole song visuals as a family man, caring husband and a loving father. So we got an actor here !!!  

There are many Joju's up there waiting to prove or rather waiting for their time. We would have been seeing them on big screen for quiet a while. Hope they gets their breakthrough soon.. Cinema lets everyone reign who is ready to stand and fight.
