Hrithik opens up about his film Fighter, calls mixed reviews as the conviction of director Siddhartha Anand
Hrithik Roshan’s latest release Fighter is making great records on the box office. The film is directed by Siddharth Anand in which Hrithik plays the role of Squadron Leader Shamsher Pathania lovingly called Patty. Hrithik is very happy to see his film garner such great response and in a recent interview, talked about the mixed reviews that the film is getting. He also said that he does not mind the criticism as it is his director Siddharth Anand’s “conviction”.
Quoting that as an actor he does not cross lines, Hrithik said, “I would like to believe that my fans and my audience who come to watch my films are a bit more evolved and they would not need lines like these. That is a weight that I bear. As an actor, I do not cross any lines. At the same time, I admire that Sid (Siddharth Anand) is a very, very headstrong filmmaker. It is his conviction. Sometimes you see somebody that convinced and it kind of breaks your heart to power down and say no. I also bear the weight of that because finally, it is my face. But I am very, very happy that it has landed as entertainment and nothing more than that. I am really relieved about that. Having said that, I still bear the weight."
He also opened up about his practice of choosing roles and said, "If your mission is stardom, and your mission is running that business, and you have that shop that people are liking and you keep selling what they like... That's also okay. I don't enjoy that, I feel suffocated. I think it comes down to why you are doing what you are doing. Why are you doing movies? What are you getting out of it? Is it for money? Then, go ahead man. There are no rules. You are earning the bread for yourself and your family. You go out and you sell yourself and do what it takes. I respect that. But once that need is satisfied... did you still want more? It has got to stop. You have to know what kind of life do you want to live and what is the cost of living that life. I always had that desire in me to find depth, because if you are not finding that what are you doing?"
Other than Hrithik, Fighter features Deepika Padukone, Anil Kapoor, Karan Singh Grover, and Akshay Oberoi.

Covid takes charm out of Eid, drives faithful indoors | Ranchi News - Net4News
Tumblr media
Ranchi: Muslims across Jharkhand will offer their prayers indoors on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha on Wednesday, Doranda Jama Masjid’s imam Maulana Syed Shah Alcama Sibli said on Monday. “We have sat down with all the stakeholders, including religious leaders, heads of different mosques and some prominent people from our community, and we have decided that everyone, barring those who stay in mosques and the heads, will offer namaz within the confines of their homes as congregations during a pandemic are not recommended,” Sibli said. He added, “We have communicated the decision to all our mosques across the state to make sure that Eid-ul-Adha celebrations do not become a threat to public health.” The chief of Imarat-e-shariah (Ranchi chapter), Mufti Mohhamed Anwar Qasmi, said, “We had issued a directive to all the mosques in Hindi as well as in Urdu during Eid, asking the devotees to refrain from offering namaz in groups, avoid hugs and handshakes because of the pandemic. A similar protocol will be followed for Bakrid.” He added, “The festival commemorates the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim who was ready to sacrifice his first born on God’s command and later, sacrificed a sheep as per the almighty’s instructions. So people should also try to sacrifice congregations amid such tough times.” Even the usual hustle and bustle was missing from the Bakrid market in Ranchi on Monday with traders complaining of sales being down this year. Manish Singh, who sells goats, said, “I have been feeding Kallu Dada (a goat which is priced at Rs 1,10,000) for more than four months to fetch a good amount this Bakrid but no buyer has approached me yet. Earlier, there used to be an auction for such goats. Today, only a few have approached me for cattle.” Source link Read the full article

India's All-Female News Outlet Battles Sexism, Caste — And Hits The Silver Screen
In a mud-walled house in rural northern India, Meera Devi sits across from a woman who recounts how four men broke into her house and raped her. หวย บอล เกมส์ กีฬา คาสิโนออนไลน์
"They [people in positions of political power or of a higher caste] can do anything. They can even kill us," the victim tells Meera, who's recording the interview on her smartphone. The woman's husband sits on the floor on the side, listening to the interview with a pained expression. He later says, "We don't trust anyone except Lahariya."
This is a scene from a new documentary called Writing With Fire which profiles Khabar Lahariya (Waves of News), India's only major news outlet run by women from marginalized communities. It focuses on rural reporting through a feminist lens and is led by chief reporter Meera Devi.
The film won the audience award in the World Cinema Documentary category at this year's Sundance Festival. It's directed by Indian filmmakers Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh.
Khabar Lahariya began as a small Hindi language newspaper in 2002 in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Many of its reporters are Dalits, formally called "untouchables" — people at the very bottom of India's ancient 4-level caste system, that are considered by higher castes to be so impure, they should not be touched.
Article continues after sponsor message
The Indian constitution bans discrimination on the basis of caste but it still persists. Two-thirds of rural women and about half of rural men practice untouchability themselves or had a family member who did, according to a 2016 survey of non-Dalit Hindu adults in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and the Indian nonprofit Research Institute for Compassionate Economics. That could mean they refuse to eat with lower caste people or don't let them enter their kitchen, which is considered a sacred place in Hindu households. Untouchability is more common in rural India, where Meera and her colleagues live and report.
Lower caste Indians are routinely beaten up and even killed by members of dominant castes for marrying outside their caste. And 10 Dalit women or girls are raped every day across India, according to a 2020 report by the international rights group Equality Now and Dalit rights organization Swabhiman Society.
Attacks against Muslims and other minorities, including Dalits, have been rising since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist party came to power in 2014, Human Rights Watch said in a 2019 report. In March, the research group Freedom House downgraded India's global freedom status to "partly free" citing increased attacks on minorities and a "crackdown on expressions of dissent by the media, academics, civil society groups, and protesters."
This is the environment in which Khabar Lahariya's journalists report on the brutal murder of a woman, profile a young Hindu nationalist leader and interview fellow Dalits about discrimination.
The documentary charts the print to digital transformation of the semi-literate newsroom — most of the reporters have had some, but not a great deal of education — and documents their struggles with the basics of the English language (which they need to know to operate the smartphones they use when reporting). It follows Meera and two other colleagues as they find workarounds to challenges like power outages while reporting, interviewing unyielding, patronizing elected officials. And all the while, many of the reporters' families are pressuring them to marry because that is what is expected for many women in India.
So what keeps them going? The answer might lie in the ending scene of the documentary in which Meera says, "When future generations ask us, 'What were you doing when the country was changing and the media was being silenced?' Khabar Lahariya will be able to say proudly that we were holding the powerful to account."
NPR's Sushmita Pathak interviewed Meera Devi over email in Hindi and translated her responses to English. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
What is the biggest challenge for you as a female Dalit reporter in India?
The biggest challenge is being a female journalist in a place where journalism is not considered a woman's job. It's hard to be a Dalit woman and a less educated woman in a rural area. It's also challenging to have to question those who consider themselves upper caste, who are audacious and have powerful political connections and who may live in the same neighborhood as I.
You report about caste-based and gender-based violence and at the same time also face discrimination yourself. How do you tackle interviewees that try to patronize you or try to make you feel inferior?
I face discrimination every day, and not just because of my work. Sometimes it presents itself in formal situations and other times informally but overall, I have won this fight. A lot of times I feel like people try to humiliate me. For instance, when I go to interview government officials they don't answer my questions or don't answer what's being asked. They say,"go write what you want, we're not going to give you any answers."
Being a female journalist and a Dalit, Meera Devi is no stranger to discrimination and threats of violence. "I have got threats against my life. There have been threats against shutting down our newspaper. They raise doubts about my reporting and investigate if I'm really a journalist."
Black Ticket Films
I also face discrimination from male journalists especially while covering a news event like a politician's rally. All the media is huddled in one place and male journalists who consider themselves and their channels very important plant themselves at the front with their huge equipment and try to boss me around. Many times I have had to fight my way and jostle to get a good view. Sometimes I have to do my reporting from somewhere else, in the middle of the crowd for instance, to get a good scene. But being a woman is very helpful while reporting on women's issues.
[While reporting on caste-based atrocities] I am reminded of my own caste but I don't express it while reporting. Most interviewees don't know my caste. Sometimes they ask about it or try to guess if I'm Hindu or Muslim based on my dress.
What kind of harassment/backlash do you face because of your work? Have you ever felt fearful for your life or for your family?
There have been a lot of instances of intimidation. One time I interviewed a woman who'd filed a legal complaint against her brother-in-law. She says he stole her house. After talking to her, I had to get the other side, so I went to visit the brother-in-law. He wasn't home but an elderly woman who was there called him. In less than 10 minutes, two men riding a bike arrived. Soon there were several people on bikes, and they blocked the road. They started verbally abusing me and threatening to call the police. They accused me of trying to steal something and said, "if you are interested in photography, why don't you take photos of my bedroom?" They snatched my camera and deleted all the images. They stomped on my press card and copies of the newspaper. With great difficulty, I managed to leave the scene. I went to the local police station but they advised me not to file any complaint. Even today, I see the man in my neighborhood from time to time.
I have got threats against my life. There have been threats against shutting down our newspaper. They raise doubts about my reporting and investigate if I'm really a journalist. They intimidate and threaten because they are powerful. A lot of my colleagues have had mobs turn up at their homes and intimidate their families. They've caused our vehicles to be involved in crashes [by tampering or other means].
Now that we are totally dependent on technology, [because we publish online] this intimidation is out in the open for everyone to see, in the form of trolling. If we post a story critical of someone, the trolls start piling up. Technology has provided them with a platform. I am always fearful for my life and for my family.
The film charts Khabar Lahariya's transition from print to digital. What were the reasons for that shift? How do you feel about it? What are the technical challenges?
The transition from print to digital was essential for us. Not just because everyone else was moving toward digital, there were other reasons too. Printing a newspaper is a costly affair and selling the newspaper was challenging.
When we went digital, there were women in our team who were seeing a smartphone, touching a smartphone for the first time. It was surprising and amazing. They had to learn to operate the phones because their work [such as recording the interview and other videos] was done on the phone. There were a lot of challenges but we made it a success together. There were different challenges every day and with each one we learned to come up with new solutions. No electricity? We had a solution for that too.
There are many challenges that your all-female newsroom faces. But what is your biggest strength?
The challenges are our biggest strength. The values and objectives of our organization are our strengths. As women, we are each other's strength. We are an amazing group of friends who share all our joys and sorrows with each other, and not just work-related ones. Our rural reporting through a feminist lens and our unity as a team is our strength.
This film won an award at the Sundance Film Festival in the USA. Do you think viewers in the USA understand what caste is? How would you describe it to them?
I cannot say if viewers in the US understand what caste is but I know that there are Indian-Americans there. It is important to talk about caste-based discrimination, about the abuses of the rights that the Indian constitution has granted to us. It doesn't matter if it's American viewers or viewers from any part of the world. As a citizen of India, how can my life be separate from this?
You can watch Writing With Fire at the upcoming Hot Docs Film Festival, starting on April 29.
NPR correspondent Lauren Frayer contributed to this report.

Triumph of caste politics : The Tribune India
Tumblr media
Rajesh Ramachandran
The surprising takeaway from the Bihar election is that the distress of thousands and thousands of migrant staff who had been force-marched again dwelling empty-handed from cities throughout the nation lastly mattered little. The financial disruption prompted in a single day by the Central Authorities’s resolution to lock down the nation — with no discover or sufficient time to arrange or repatriate staff or to assist them survive wherever they had been caught — was speculated to have develop into an inflection level in electoral politics. The lack of 2.1 crore salaried jobs and extra avenues of informal incomes should have prompted a dramatic, long-lasting turnaround. However all those that fell on their method dwelling or those that walked and pedalled 1000’s of kilometres or those that travelled hiding within the bowels of concrete mixers, spending all their financial savings, appear to have taken the Covid lockdown too of their sore stride as simply one other episode within the basic drama of ache.
For none of this appears to have had an influence on the voters’ perspective in the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the BJP. The BJP, which swept the Uttar Pradesh Meeting elections in 2017 quickly after the devastating blow of demonetisation, is rising because the second largest celebration within the second largest Hindi heartland state. What has labored in these elections is one thing far faraway from lives and livelihoods — one thing extra primordial than jobs and prosperity.
To grasp these outcomes, one has to look intently on the vote share of the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Within the current previous, even when it fared the worst, the RJD had secured about 18 per cent votes in Bihar. For these dedicated followers, it didn’t make a distinction whether or not Lalu Prasad Yadav was a horrible administrator, lording over a kidnapping trade, or a person battling corruption costs, or selling his spouse and kids as a substitute of making sturdy second-rung management. All that counted was that Lalu was the supreme chief of a caste group, which had aligned with one other group. The Muslim-Yadav electoral alliance was the defining be-all and end-all of Bihar’s politics from 1990 to 2005. In these 15 years, Lalu had cynically put in his spouse Rabri Devi as Chief Minister thrice to rule by proxy when he was arrested for graft.
Lalu’s was termed the politics of social justice, however in actual phrases it was id politics of caste delight and communal energy. The query over ‘vikas versus izzat’ or ‘growth versus delight’ was a no brainer. However what was handed as a pushback towards the previous feudal order or the assertion of the backward caste lots was really the arrival of a brand new dominant caste and a brand new ruling order. Those that had been being killed weren’t simply Ranvir Sena’s upper-caste ganglords, but additionally idealistic Left leaders like Chandrashekhar Prasad of the CPI (ML), twice elected because the JNU College students’ Union president. The prime accused in Prasad’s homicide was Siwan’s uncrowned king Mohammad Shahabuddin, a detailed affiliate of Lalu and a working committee member of the RJD. Pappu Yadav, one other previous RJD strongman, was convicted by a trial court docket for the homicide of CPI(M) MLA Ajit Sarkar in Purnia. Now, within the run-up to the just-concluded Meeting polls, no CPI (ML) chief remembered Prasad, and clearly no CPI(M) campaigner spoke of Ajit Sarkar as a result of the 2 Communist events had been gaining immensely from the RJD’s id politics and its Muslim-Yadav votes.
These elections but once more proved that Lalu’s caste males and their social allies can consolidate into a powerful vote block, carving up 18-23 per cent of the state’s vote share even in his absence. Such a consolidation of caste and non secular forces clearly lures companions. The Congress, CPI(ML), CPI(M) and CPI have all obsequiously lined as much as be led by Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu’s 31-year-old youthful son — clearly not a brand new daybreak of social justice. All of them had their eyes firmly set on the RJD’s vote share that’s transferrable to even minor allies in a given constituency. Such a block of votes and a powerful consolidation of caste and non secular forces should set off in time a counter consolidation, nevertheless feeble and fractured it might be. And that’s the phenomenon that’s getting unleashed in Bihar. The worry of the dominance of the Yadav center caste and peasantry has been prompting the coalescing of the higher castes, non-Yadav OBCs and Mahadalits. It’s merely id politics versus id politics, during which the one largest caste or communal group will get defeated by all the opposite castes and teams coming collectively as one block. The BJP, clearly, has not achieved this defeat of the RJD by itself. With out Nitish Kumar’s management and his JDU’s legitimacy, the non-Yadav OBCs don’t see a lot within the BJP, which is essentially an upper-caste entity in Bihar.
So, sadly, an election during which jobs, migration, flood reduction, Covid, public well being, training and the dignity of labour at dwelling and in host states ought to have been mentioned has obtained diminished to the arithmetic of caste and communities neatly stacked for and towards Prime Minister Modi. Unbeknownst to his detractors, on this course of Modi is gaining a block of voters throughout the nation. When Modi refers back to the ‘Yuvraj of Jungle Raj’, he’s blowing a canine whistle that units off a political course of, and so it’s when he talks of the temple at Ayodhya in the identical breath. And the numbers are steadily accruing for Modi to create a consolidated block of voters who provoke a course of throughout the nation, simply as Lalu, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mayawati and others had common a vote block utilizing a coalition of communities. After each election, Modi increasingly resembles the previous satraps who sit on a pile of dedicated communal votes, firmly safe in caste or spiritual silos.

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who was sacked from office over allegations that he misappropriated funds, Babachir Lawal, tells HINDI LIVINUS that the party risks losing the next presidential election if some things are not done
Some members of the All Progressives Congress, including Mamman Daura, a nephew of the President, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), have said competence and not zoning should be the key determinant for the President’s successor in 2023. What do you think about it?
You said some senior members of our party, but I am not aware that Mamman Daura is a card-carrying member of our party. Ideally, Daura is supposed to be considered as an elder in the North on account of his age and achievements in public service. On that basis, we accord him a level of respect to the extent that his comments will carry weight.
But since he has never contested any position, either in the party or in government, we will not take his comments on zoning very seriously. My own inclination is to take it as a personal opinion. The issue of zoning is a very critical component of the Nigerian entity. Zoning is not entrenched in the APC constitution nor is it in our (Nigerian) constitution but a political party is in the business of politics to win elections.
And for any political party to be successful, it has to take into consideration the diverse demography and political structure of its constituents. Don’t forget that our politics is built on some fundamental understanding, though not legal. First, there is the issue of religious balance. We want a country in which every Nigeria feels secure to live their life in a peaceful and prosperous manner in an environment created by the government. Any political party that ignores this is obviously digging its grave. Nigerians like to count the numbers of Muslims and Christians in the Federal Executive Council to see if there is balance.
And one of the things Nigerians have criticised about the security architecture is the fact that they see the top echelons of the security service as being predominantly dominated by Muslims. To that extent, Christians find faults in whatever they do. I suspect that most of the calls that the leadership of the security agencies should be rejigged is because Christians don’t feel comfortable with the dominance of one religion, especially as cases of insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and so on, have soared and Nigerians have factored in the religious orientation of the perpetrators.
Two, politically, Nigerians want zoning in the polity. In states where the people are homogenous on the basis of religion and tribe, they tend to rotate power across the zones or blocs within the state. At the national level, it translates into North and South; that is the understanding and every Nigerian has come to accept it. That, however, does not mean that Nigerians do not believe that merits should count. But people who have merits are available in all parts of the country and are not localised to any geopolitical zone.
There are fears that the Peoples Democratic Party may field a northerner in 2023 and that it may give them an advantage if your party picks a southerner…
No! The PDP introduced the principle of zoning. Even the All Nigerian Peoples Party, the Congress for Progressive Change, and the Action Congress of Nigeria, which existed then but now defunct, never discussed zoning. The concept was largely successful because the party had elder statesmen like Adamu Ciroma, Alex Ekwueme, and Solomon Lar who could come up with a workable political structure acceptable to the generality of their party members when things got hot. Now, the APC has found itself in the same situation and has to toe that path, or else it will not win the next presidential election. To win the next election, the APC must apply the principle of zoning, though not clearly stated in the APC constitution. We believe by 2023, after the North has produced the President for eight years, the South should have a go at it.
Do you think that will be practical if the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, is again put forward by the PDP as its candidate? Don’t you think he will win by securing the majority of the votes from the North?
I am not thinking like that. Atiku Abubakar is from Adamawa State and is a northerner like me, but I will like to contest the basis of your statistics. The conclusion that the North produces the largest bloc vote is not true. The North-West geopolitical zone in the North tends to go in one direction all the time. The North-East tends to go in another direction. They have never voted along the same lines and we are not even talking about the Middle Belt.
If the South-West, South-East and South-South agree to vote for one party as they do in the North-West, the chances are that our so-called (northern) numerical strength may be challenged, and we may come off worst.
With Adams Oshiomhole and the APC’s National Working Committee’s removal and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s alleged presidential ambitions, do you think there could be divisions in the APC?
First of all, I want to declare that I am a Tinubu man. There’s no denying that there’s a Tinubu factor in the APC. Just like I was a Buharist and every time Buhari’s name was mentioned, I stood by it. But the crisis that started in the APC has nothing to do with 2023. It just had to do with the mismanagement of the party by those entrusted with that responsibility – namely the NWC.
We had a chairman that had deficiencies in management skills in a political system where everybody needed to be carried along. As much as possible, he was like Alexander the Great. In almost every state, because of his approach to politics and conflict resolution, there was crisis, even in states where the APC had no governors. So it got to a stage where everybody was fed up with having Oshiomhole as the chairman. However, there were some people who wanted Oshiomhole out more than the rest and members of the APC knew they had ulterior motives that were not altruistic, but majorly selfish.
Does the selfishness have anything to do with 2023?
Yes, like some governors who wanted to go back to the old days when they would sit down and decide what would happen and who got what in the party. Many within the party felt that as a former governor and labour leader, he would be able to stand up to the governors. We also felt that coming to that position with some affluence; he would not sell our party for pecuniary considerations. But Oshiomhole, to some certain extent, did not give the governors one inch because he was autocratic or a dictator. And the governors who wanted to go back to running the party created a crisis. It got to a point when even those of us who ordinarily supported Oshiomhole later became disappointed because he so messed us up. But because those who wanted to throw him out were worse than him, we stood by him. They deployed all kinds of arsenal and Machiavellian tactics that no one after something good would be inclined to do. Some of us advocated for a ‘soft landing’ for him. Like every other human being, Oshiomhole had his weaknesses. He, however, started to change towards the end of his reign but it came too late. Those who wanted him out were more desperate. From my own observation, there is very little the national chairman of a party can do to impose a presidential candidate on their party.
Do you see Buhari supporting zoning ahead of 2023?
Buhari believes firmly and strictly in what is legal. Once you point out to the President that this is what the law says, he goes with it and other considerations won’t matter. I don’t know what he will do but it is only necessary that any leader, whose tenure is running out, ought to show interest in who their successor will be. Not for personal reasons but for the continuity of their policies and programmes. To that extent, even if Buhari is not inclined towards it. I will urge him to.
Do you think the President would support that power should move to the South?
When we were in the CPC, we got many votes but didn’t win. But there were other challenges; there was an unhealthy perception that Buhari was a religious bigot. He was also seen as someone who would be hard on corrupt persons and many groups didn’t feel they would be safe if he became the President, especially the Christian community. So we sat down as a strategic group and thought of what we could do. Which bloc could give us the votes that could make Buhari to become the President? There was no other bloc other than the South-West bloc, which had the defunct ACN in control of states in the South-West as a regional party. This was done as far back as 2010, so we planned to have a merger before the 2011 general elections. But time ran out on us. The merger didn’t work. After the loss, we were encouraged to start the merger process again. I remember a letter from the chairman of the CPC Board of Trustees directing our committee to work with the ACN, only towards having a merger. It was when we read his letter for discussion that we decided that we should not restrict it to the ACN. We moved to include the ANPP. One of our specific goals was to make Buhari the President. Tinubu was a colossus of South-West politics. If he had said there would be no merger, there wouldn’t have been any merger. By the time we went to the APC national convention, the North-West was not with Buhari. The North-West people were either for Atiku or Rabiu Kwankwaso; most of them, at least. The late Inuwa Abdulkadir and I continued to pile pressure on Tinubu, giving him the statistics. There was no point supporting a candidate that would not win the election. We told Tinubu that this man had 12 million votes, and that there could be two million votes for Atiku and four or five million votes for Kwankwaso at best, and that it would not translate to any electoral victory. It became very clear that Buhari was going to win that primary election once Tinubu declared publicly his support for him and accepted that the South-West would vote for Buhari.
Between Wednesday and Thursday (before the convention), it was clear Tinubu and Bisi Akande were going to support Buhari and the North-West had no choice but to support Buhari, otherwise they were going to lose out. So if Tinubu had not conceded at that point, I think probably Kwakwanso would have won the presidential nomination of the APC. For that reason alone, you can see Tinubu’s contributions to the emergence of Buhari as President and his role in building the party.
Everybody knows Buhari had no money and he doesn’t play money politics. So he won his presidential primary election without spending money. Also, Buharists didn’t have money; they only had ideas, zeal and fanaticism. And politics requires money. Tinubu, who had his tentacles spread across the corporate world, was the only man who knew where and how to raise the funds needed. He was the one that reached out to all the ‘big men’ who were at the time scared of the then President Goodluck Jonathan. These were all rich men that depended on government’s patronage. But somehow, Tinubu was able to persuade some of them to support Buhari. We had so many experiences, Timipre Sylva (now Minister of State for Petroleum Resources) and I thought we could do it but found out we couldn’t until Tinubu came in and we won the election.
How did you manage to turn around the negative perceptions the public had of Buhari?
At the time, Nigerians saw Buhari as just a wood. He had no emotions. People weren’t seeing him as a loving husband and father, and doubted if he could be humane. It was Tinubu who brought in consultants from the US – the firm behind the successful execution of President Barrack Obama’s campaign. It helped to repackage Buhari to Nigerians. They came and started from the scratch; they did some research work for us. They told us where Buhari was weak and the messages needed to change the long held perception, using billboards and other campaign methods.
That was when you started seeing Buhari wearing a suit, and in Igbo, Yoruba and Kanuri attire. It was then people started to see Buhari as a family man with his beautiful daughters.
The strategy was to transform his image and show a humane, loving and trustworthy person. It helped us. At some point during our strategy sessions, the consultants asked us: why don’t you allow Buhari’s wife to come out so that she can be contrasted with Dame Patience Jonathan? When you do that, you would have won the election already, they said. She provided a contrast to the former First Lady. Rallies don’t win elections. It is the underground work that wins elections. Almost the same thing repeated itself in 2019. Tinubu doesn’t like to take credit for what he does; he lives for politics, gets his money from politics and spends it on politics. He has no other interest except politics. The monies he spent out of his pocket that are unaccounted for outside of the party’s campaign finances, are quite enormous. I know this because he’s my friend and because I am also involved in the Buhari government. So when there is a crisis, I am the one whose duty is to run to the South-West.
Therefore, except we want to bring the wrath of God on our heads, which we don’t want, the party must create an environment that is free and fair for anybody who wants to contest, including Tinubu, to do so. Allow the delegates, who must have emerged through a similarly free and fair process, decide who they want to vote for. It will be our duty as ‘Tinubu’s boys’ that time to say, ‘Let us vote for Bola’.
By the way, what did we get from several years that the Presidency has resided in the North? Along that line, we have also had vice presidents who were northerners. We have had presidents who were northerners but for some reason, the system is not improving. Presidency from the North is like an albatross around our neck. We northerners can do with power going elsewhere so that at least, we can now complain. But you cannot be holding on to power while things are not working fine. Let us also be able to complain, especially those of us who play active roles in the country.
There have been problems between the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, people that should be working together to promote the President’s anti-corruption war. How bad do you think this is for the country?
Like the Bible says, the heart of man is desperately wicked: who can phantom it? The conducts of certain people, whether in government or not, is incomprehensible to a normal person with a decent character. Both of them are like my younger brothers. I have known Malami since I was in the CPC and only got to know Magu when I was in government. And I like his sense of duty and commitment to his job. That’s all I know about him. I don’t know however if there had been attempts to address these issues in another way before the options were exhausted and the issues resulted in the escalation of those differences. What I consider painful in all this is that this government has fought corruption and committed all its energies and resources to fighting corruption irrespective of the parties the people they go after belong to. Some are politically motivated; some are not right. I would not be self-serving if I say take my own case, for instance. This issue has given the international community the impression that we are not serious about our anti-corruption campaign. When I was removed as SGF, the general outcry was that because of my closeness to Buhari, they wanted to weaken my flanks so that they could come after me.
But now in the case of Magu, the narrative is that corruption is fighting back. These are the impressions and the consequences of such conducts. Initially I had the feeling that the system would come after Magu, especially the press and the social media. If you are very discerning, you will know they are with him. The preponderance of opinions is in support of Magu’s position. The views being laid out are as if it is a witch-hunt. There are better ways to end Magu’s reign because no matter what anybody tells you, Magu tried. I used to joke that if you are a thief and you are caught by Magu, nobody can release you unless you cut off his hands.

Fresh support of only 60% in PM's economic stimulus package: Report
Of the Rs 20-lakh-crore package that Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to defend the economy against coronavirus disruptions, fresh support may be only around 60 percent of the offer as it counts the first financial stimulus and liquidity support that Reserve Bank has given already, and will overburden bond market, says a report.
Modi outlined a Rs 20-lakh-crore which is 9.7 percent of GDP support package, of which new allocations could only be 50-60 percent of the offer. But until more details are known, financing burden will fall on the bond markets, Radhika Rao, the economist at Singaporean lender DBS Bank said in a note on Wednesday.
She further noted that "the new fiscal package is upsized and its scale lends a positive surprise, at a bigger-than-anticipated size with emphasis on making the economy more self-reliant via local manufacturing and improved supply chains.
In a big push to revive the COVID-hit economy, Modi on Tuesday announced massive new financial incentives on top of the previously announced packages for a combined stimulus of Rs 20 lakh crore.

1st 'Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita' in Central Luzon launched in Bataan
#PHnews: 1st 'Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita' in Central Luzon launched in Bataan
DAINALUPIHAN, Bataan -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) launched here on Wednesday the first “Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita” in Central Luzon.
With its theme “Katuwang sa Diwa at Gawa Para sa Masagang Ani at Mataas na Kita,” the project serves as direct linkage between farmers and the consuming public with an assurance of safe and affordable products.
Undersecretary Ernesto Gonzales of DA Consumers Affairs, DA Regional Director Custodio Bautista, and Dinalupihan Mayor Maria Angela Garcia led the cutting of the ceremonial ribbon for the formal launching of the project.
A memorandum of understanding between the DA and the municipal government of Dinalupihan was likewise signed for the implementation and monitoring of the project.
Kadiwa was introduced during the Marcos administration and shortly by former President Joseph Estrada and re-launched under the leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte. It is aimed at helping the farmers earn more and bringing down the prices of agricultural commodities.
Through Kadiwa, Bautista said farmers will have the chance to engage in direct selling of their produce and be not under the mercy of unscrupulous traders.
"It will halt ang hindi makatarungang pagtaas ng presyo dahil ilalapit ang magsasaka sa mamimili (the unjust price increase because the farmers will be brought closer to the consumers),” he said.
Garcia thanked the DA for choosing Dinalupihan as the pilot area of Kadiwa.
“Ang ating vision sa ating bayan ay maging isang modernong agropolis ng buong Central Luzon at ang ating mga magsasaka, kayo po ang aming bayani (Our vision for our town is to become modern agropolis of the whole Central Luzon and to the farmers, you are our heroes),” the lady mayor said.
She said she will seek help from the national, regional, provincial and municipal governments for the farmers.
Gonzales said dole-outs to farmers like cash and animal dispersal will be stopped by the DA and instead, beneficial and long-lasting projects will be given to them.
“Bibigyan ko kayo ng proyekto na after one o two years hindi na kayo lalapit sa akin para humingi ng pera kasi mayaman na kayo. Iyan ang kailangan natin sa isang farmer hindi ba? Hindi iyong maya-maya, hingi dito, hingi doon (I will give you a project that after one or two years, you will no longer approach me to ask money because you are already rich then. That is what we want for a farmer, right? Not always asking here and there),” he said.
He said he will come back inDinalupihan to talk with the leaders of the farmers about the project.
“May gagawin tayong project dito, ang free range chicken na gagawin nating industriya. Hindi small time lang, mapapalaki natin iyan kung magkakaisa kayo (We will start a project here, the free-range chicken that we will make as an industry. Not small time, we can expand it if we unite),” he said.
Gonzales said he will make Dinalupihan an example and model of a successful program.
During the event, some 50 sellers occupied stalls at the Dinalupihan municipal ground offering different agricultural products like fried "itik" (duck), fried "pugo" (quail), various vegetables, root crops like big "ube" (purple yam), "kamoteng kahoy" (cassava), fruits, rice, carabao milk and assorted delicacies.
The agri-trade fair will be held for three days. (PNA)

Spyware Maker NSO Promises Reform but Keeps Snooping
MUMBAI, India — Bela Bhatia, a human rights lawyer in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, is accustomed to surveillance. She works in a region prone to both guerrilla violence and government reprisals, and the authorities do not like many of her clients.
Still, Ms. Bhatia said she was shocked to learn her phone had been infected with invasive spyware delivered through missed video calls on WhatsApp, a messaging service that is used by about 400 million people in India, WhatsApp’s biggest market.
“You are carrying the spy in the pocket with you everywhere you go,” she said. “It is much more than one had imagined that the Indian state could do.”
Ms. Bhatia is one of more than a hundred Indians who learned in recent months that every keystroke, call and GPS location on their phones had probably been recorded by the surveillance software, which is sold by the NSO Group, an Israeli firm.
NSO says its technology is licensed only to governments for combating terrorism and fighting crime. It also promises it won’t sell to governments with records of human rights abuses.
But the revelations from India over the last two weeks show that even countries with decent scores on global human rights indexes will use NSO technology to track journalists, critics and dissidents, digital rights activists said.
“This attack is a window into what happens when you give governments extralegal access to people’s communications,” said John Scott-Railton, a security researcher at the Citizen Lab, which worked closely with WhatsApp to uncover the attacks and notify the targets. “These tools will be used for all kinds of unaccountable espionage. The temptation for abuse is just too great.”
WhatsApp and its parent company, Facebook, filed a federal lawsuit against NSO last week seeking to block the Israeli firm from using their services. The suit says NSO abused WhatsApp by piggybacking on it to hack into the phones of 1,400 of its users around the world. More than 100 of the targets were human rights activists, journalists, religious leaders and dissidents.
The case is the latest in an avalanche of claims of abuse to emerge in recent years from the multibillion-dollar commercial spyware market, where governments — instead of protecting the privacy of consumers — are the paying clients.
At the center of these claims is NSO, which had pledged to move past its record of abetting human rights abuses and be in full compliance with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights by October. That month, WhatsApp informed the 1,400 victims, which also included diplomats and senior government officials, that NSO had used its service to attack their phones.
The recent revelations offer a counternarrative to NSO’s stated support for transparency and human rights. The WhatsApp lawsuit contends that NSO’s spyware was used against dissidents and journalists in the United Arab Emirates and Mexico, two governments previously caught abusing NSO spyware. It also cites NSO’s use in Bahrain, a country where the human rights situation was deemed “dire” by Human Rights Watch.
In India, 121 WhatsApp users were targeted with NSO spyware, the messaging service said in a recent letter to the government. Of those, at least 22 were human rights activists, journalists and civil rights lawyers, according to a tally by the news site Scroll.in. A spokesman for the Indian National Congress, a leading opposition party, told reporters last weekend that WhatsApp had informed one of its top leaders, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, that she was among the targets.
It’s not clear which government agencies in India purchased NSO’s spyware. The central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has repeatedly criticized WhatsApp — not NSO or its clients — for the breach, but has declined to support calls by opposition parties for a full investigation into who bought and used the spyware.
Two clusters of Indians stood out on the target list. One group is active in working for human rights in Chhattisgarh, where the government has battled a Maoist insurgency for decades. The other has connections to left-leaning activists whom the government has accused of plotting to kill the prime minister and of inciting violence in Bhima Koregaon, near Mumbai, in 2017.
Ankit Grewal, a lawyer for Sudha Bharadwaj, who was arrested in the Bhima Koregaon case, said he started missing calls on WhatsApp last fall. In October, he learned that calls had infected his phone with NSO’s spyware even though he never picked them up.
“Now I see a pattern,” he said. “Other lawyers who were defending activists related to Bhima Koregaon and Chhattisgarh were being targeted. Who else but the government would do it, as we were targeted after the arrests of the activists?”
Santosh Bhartiya, a former member of Parliament and the editor in chief of the Hindi-language news site Chauthi Duniya, was more mystified as to why he was targeted. Although his news site is critical of the government, Mr. Bhartiya said, he is also well known to top government officials. “I am a journalist, but I am not that kind of journalist that people will do surveillance on,” he said.
Another target, Shu Choudhary, a former BBC journalist who has been active in Chhattisgarh peace talks, said he had become resigned to government surveillance. What disturbed him most was just how invasive and “vicious” NSO’s spyware proved to be.
“This is an illegal attack on our fundamental rights, but it’s nothing new,” Mr. Choudhary said. “It’s just that the scope of surveillance is much higher than anything we’ve experienced before.”
When asked about the targets in India, NSO repeated the statement it made when the WhatsApp lawsuit was announced: Its technology is used to fight crime and terrorism and is not licensed for spying on human rights activists and journalists.
Last June, the United Nations Special Rapporteur David Kaye called for an immediate moratorium on the sale of surveillance technology until rigorous human rights safeguards could be put in place.
But since the U.N. has no power to enforce a moratorium, spyware sales continued unabated. In September, NSO published new human rights and whistleblower policies that included a renewed commitment to due diligence and to contractually obligating its customers to restrict the use of NSO’s products to the investigation of crime and terrorism.
In response to NSO’s new policies, Mr. Kaye wrote a letter in October questioning how exactly the company planned to hold its clients to account when its spyware had been so readily misused and when it had no direct way of monitoring how governments deploy its products.
“The industry is incredibly opaque and the users are opaque,” Mr. Kaye said. “On both sides, the opacity makes it impossible to understand what’s going on in this space.”
Mr. Kaye and others said the WhatsApp lawsuit filed last week could be the beginning of checks in an industry that has had none. The lawsuit is the first case of a technology company holding another to account for exploiting its products for surveillance.
Although the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, which was cited in the suit, does not apply to “lawfully authorized investigative, protective, or intelligence activity” by the government, there is no exception for private actors, like NSO.
“I imagine NSO Group is pretty worried about that,” Mr. Kaye said.
In a demonstration of how seriously it takes the case, Facebook started blocking NSO employees from their personal Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram accounts last week, according to NSO employees’ posts in public web forums.
The people targeted with NSO’s technology said they do not expect the lawsuits to change their reality of being under near-constant government surveillance.
“In an ideal world, everything would be done legally, but we live in dangerous times,” said Mr. Choudhary. “We need to try to protect ourselves as much as we can.”

OZ vs. Real Life: How Our Society Has Become like 'Summer Wars'
Today marks the 10th anniversary of the release of the critically-acclaimed anime film Summer Wars. The 2009 feature won several awards and further solidified the reputation of director Mamoru Hosoda as an up-and-coming anime creator who previously directed The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and would go on to direct films such as Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, and the Oscar-nominated Mirai. To this day, Summer Wars represents a milestone in his illustrious career as a visually-stunning and emotional story about a family whose heart-wrenching drama is at the center of an internet crisis that threatens the world.
One of the more notable aspects of the film is the glamourous and fantastical world of OZ, a VR platform integrated into the very infrastructure of modern society. In the film, OZ functions as an entertainment hub but also allowed people to conduct businesses on every level. The plot even focused on how an evolving virus wreaking havoc on OZ had disastrous effects on the real world! For its time, it was certainly a far more advanced reality than anything we might have seen in real life.
But that was 10 years ago. Now in 2019, our lives have become far more virtual. Much of our daily routines rely on the internet or are otherwise made far more efficient by using the right app. It’s no stretch to say our society operates in the same way as the OZ-reliant world of Summer Wars. But how similar are they? Does real life imitate art? Is OZ still more advanced than our society, or have we taken steps in our computer-consolidated world that Hosoda hadn’t thought of? Let’s see how our modern world stacks up to OZ.
In order to properly examine how advanced our world has become compared to Summer Wars, we should dive into what OZ really does. At its core, it gathered a user’s entire life—from business to entertainment—in one overarching social network. It could be accessed from computers, televisions, flip phones, and even portable game consoles. Using highly-customizable avatars, users could explore a vast online world for both leisure and professional work. Users were able to buy anything from movies to fashion to food to real estate on OZ in its wide selection of online stores.
As a global network, OZ users could communicate in chat rooms with anyone in the world using real-time translations, removing language as a barrier for socializing. People could also participate in online sporting events from soccer to martial arts fighting and beyond.
Surprisingly, large corporations also had branches on OZ, where workers would “cyber-commute” to virtual cubicles and conduct business there. Even local governments around the world had a stake in OZ, opening up service kiosks for users to visit. Traffic managment and emergency services could be accessed through OZ, and you could even use it to pay your taxes. There was truly no limit to how connected the world could be to OZ’s vast online platform. Your entire life was collected on a singular network, and then expanded exponentially. From top to bottom, it functioned as a part of the entire world. As a whole entity, it was certainly much more innovative than anything in our reality at the time.
Speaking of which, let's take a look at where technology was during Summer Wars' initial release. The year is 2009. Flip phones were still in use throughout society, but smartphones were on a meteoric rise in popularity. The iPhone 3GS was the latest iPhone model on the market at the time, with the Samsung Galaxy making its debut on June 29 of that year, mere days before Summer Wars’ theatrical release on August 1.
At the same time, smartphone applications started sharing in the spotlight. CNN reported that the iTunes App Store alone saw over 2 billion downloads across various apps. Some of the most popular apps downloaded that year included document viewers, GPS navigation, games, messengers, radio stations, and more. Other smart devices would start catching up with the trend as well, with Android and Blackberry products launching their own app stores. Google, which launched its Play Store before Apple in 2008, only began supporting priced apps in 2009.
Social networking saw a similar growth in popularity. Facebook would go from its humble beginnings as a site for college students to reach users across all countries and demographics. By the end of 2009, the social networking site gained over 350 million users, with the average user spending an hour a day online. Twitter also became a platform for real-time news updates. People from all over the world contributed to the “micro-blogging” trend with tweets and concise updates on developing news stories almost exactly as they happened. Online messaging was also a developing craze. Apps like AIM and Skype allowed people to connect with each other with video calls and messages, but Facebook Chat was slowly becoming more popular as a means of communication.
Already, we can draw some interesting parallels in the comparison between Summer Wars and real life. By and large, the cast of Summer Wars were often using flip phones, reflecting Japan’s overall reliance on said devices that persists well into recent years. While something could certainly said about the processing capabilities of flip phones being able to run something as advanced as OZ, instances of smartphone usage were few and far between, with only a handful of tech-savvy characters using them. By then in our world, smartphones were already the new standard of devices essential to your daily life.
As for news and entertainment, users could receive vast amounts of televised news updates on the dot. As soon as a news broadcast began or you wanted to check out a movie, it could be fed right into your OZ interface.
Of course, OZ had its share of fantastical achievements for its time. Millions of OZ’s chatrooms allowed users to converse with several people across different languages. Real time translations almost instantly converted a user's speech and text to other people’s native languages. As an open platform, OZ users could also jump right onto other people’s chatrooms seamlessly to talk with other people. Barring any region-specific message apps or language preferences on your computer, nothing in 2009 could come close to matching the translation efficiency that OZ offered.
For instance, real-time translations on mobile devices was first developed and utilized in Japan in 1999 and featured direct speech translation. Between 2004 and 2006, it was released and implemented for SMS, emails, and instant messaging. Though even then, it would just support conversations between two people in two different languages.
You certainly couldn’t have live conversations with a native Japanese speaker, a native Hindi speaker, a native French speaker, a native Tagalog speaker, and a native English speaker as fluidly as you could on OZ. Technically, OZ chatrooms eschewed the need for translating apps and features in the first place, allowing people to speak freely in their own languages with virtually no lag time. At the time, nothing could connect people on the internet quite like the global phenomenon of OZ. It was the lifeline of Summer Wars’ society. Even world leaders conducted their business on the networking platform. For better or worse, society was largely reliant on OZ to function.
Now, let's fast-forward 10 years, where we begin to see just how much of of our online lives reflects that of OZ. Today’s social media and technological capabilities have become so hard-wired into our everyday lives that our devices are identical to an entire livelihood fitting in the palm of your hand. Flip phones are practically extinct as smartphones became the new standard. Apps have evolved from cute, mindless add-ons that kill time on a commute to essential lifelines that streamline many of our daily responsibilities into a few screen swipes each. Our connectivity is broader than ever with several messaging apps and programs that allow us to communicate with anyone in the world with a semi-decent internet connection. And yes, even our governments and businesses are unabashedly reliant on their smart devices and internet in order to function.
But of course, we need to bring it back to Summer Wars. How much did the movie get right? Have we exceeded Hosoda’s expectations for society? Is OZ still more advanced than our world? Let’s break it down.
As previously mentioned, OZ was a one-stop shop for literally any of your needs. From news to fashion to running a nuclear reactor, there wasn’t much you couldn’t do on OZ. Many of the apps and sites we use now include various functions that do indeed match up with Summer Wars' infamous social network.
Facebook, for one, is possibly the closest example we have to a true-to-life OZ. Aside from keeping in touch with friends, the main page alone allows you to create and visit fundraisers, buy and sell anything from phones to houses in a marketplace, conduct job searches, and even send letters government officials and representatives on various issues. You can even keep track of news updates, emergencies, and ongoing crises around the world depending on who you’re following. Through the Messenger app, people can even request and send money to their friends at their leisure. Many of Facebook’s current functions are well within OZ’s capabilities.
Of course, Facebook can’t do everything OZ can. It certainly doesn’t have a customizable avatar that you can decorate with the hottest fashion, nor can you pay your taxes on it. Not many people exclusively use Facebook for work either (one might argue that it’s still used for the exact opposite). And in terms of 1:1 translations across several different languages, you’re better off downloading different keyboard layouts for your typing purposes. Instead, we have individual apps and sites that serve several different functions from news updates to financial transactions, and most of them can be accessed from our smartphones alone.
For tax-paying purposes, you have plenty of options. PC Magazine keeps an annual list of their preferred apps for keeping up with your bills such as TurboTax and H&R Block. They even boast that the H&R Block app works just as well as its browser version.
Plenty of today’s new and upcoming games have character creators that let you play expressively. Though you certainly can’t explore the entire internet with them or outfit them in the latest Gucci styles, games like the upcoming Code Vein feature several options from which you can choose your appearance. People can also use platforms like VR Chat with custom avatars to interact with online users.
There are also plenty of apps and sites that, instead of using them explicitly for your job, help you organize your business ventures better. Trello and Slack are common sites for employees to keep their assignments organized and stay in touch conveniently. Dropbox is a cloud service that allows you to upload and store your important documents securely. There are even plenty of note-taking apps that you can download or are even pre-loaded in your phone to begin with that can help keep your work thoughts in check.
Translation apps have come a long way since the early days of Google Translate, though even that has seen some considerable upgrades. Apps like iTranslate Voice 3 allow you to speak into your phone and translate your phrases automatically into your language of choice. Other apps like TextGrabber can even help you read signs and menus in foreign languages by taking pictures of the text. There are also plenty of successful and ongoing Kickstarter projects for sleek and portable translation devices that strive to help us get closer to real-time translated conversations between several different languages at once. Even if it’s not common practice yet, the idea has started to take shape in recent years.
The same can be said about anything that OZ came up with back in 2009. In many ways, we’ve gotten closer and closer to the vision that Hosoda had for an internet-reliant society. Though we certainly don’t have nuclear codes or hospital health monitoring available on a whim, our current internet capabilities allow us to streamline both our professional and social lives in many different ways.
OZ in and of itself was integrated into every facet of society, making it essential to a fault to making sure the world still goes round. In reality, a decent internet connection grants you the same kind of accessibility to just about anything you might need. In the 10 years since Summer Wars’ release, our society has become nearly identical that of Kenji Koiso and the Jinnouchi clan's. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how we as a network civilization will advance in another 10 years! As of now, all we can say is that Summer Wars certainly wasn’t far off in predicting where we’d be now.
Do you think our society is anything like Summer Wars? What OZ innovation would you like to see in real life? Leave a comment and let us know!
