BEFORE THE PARTY;

In a town like Rosewood where people’s dirty laundry was passed around like the morning newspaper, Dion Dempsey was one of the few who managed to keep his business out of people’s mouths. Occasionally it came down to brute force and intimidation, but for the most part it was simply because he did what others seemed incapable of and kept to himself. Marlo and Polo talked enough for all of them anyway.

There were only two things most people know about Dion: his motorbike was his baby, and he worked as a bouncer at Coyote Ugly, which conveniently meant he could simultaneously work as a dealer as well, though both jobs barely scraped up enough cash to cover the rent in the tiny apartment he had been left in after his father’s arrest a few years prior. Surviving was hard enough, then SoWood’s impact drove the cost of living in the area through the roof. From the moment the project broke ground he'd never stood a chance.

Evicted and essentially orphaned, Dion felt forgotten by the world, by the gang that was supposed to be his family. If Ace hadn’t stepped up and offered up his own home, Dion didn’t know what he’d have done to survive the winter.

Accepting help was probably the most difficult thing for him to come to terms with. Ace wasn’t the kind of guy that dished out charity though, he took his obligations as a member of the gang seriously, and in turn Dion owed him his allegiance. It was that simple. Even if he’d ended up crammed into a shoebox of a house with three other guys and a storm in a teacup, the roof over his head was more than anyone else had offered him. That they’d been friends before didn’t matter, not when so many of the people they’d all called friends had already left them to choke on their dust. They ran on loyalty alone. Show it, and get it in return.

It didn’t take long for word about the destruction of the South Side to find its way back to his father, or someone who knew something about the man— he assumed, because he sure as hell wasn’t going to willingly walk into a prison to ask the man himself. The note slipped into his pocket while he was distracted and dealing with rowdy frat boys trying to climb the bar at Coyote Ugly gave no instructions, just a name: Bunny Chadwell.

Rumors were rampant in Rosewood, and despite his general disconnect from society, being a bouncer at the bar meant his presence went unnoticed on the outskirts most of the time. More than once he’d heard a few entertaining local legends, stuff like some nerd losing his virginity to an apple pie, those weird PA kids trying to take each other out to get a part in a musical, and the one that mattered most to him now: that Bunny Chadwell had never been a Chadwell at all.

It made sense if he thought about it, but what in the hell was his dad doing knocking up a Chadwell’s wife? And why hadn’t he cashed in on it sooner? Dion had been living in near poverty his entire life, while he presumably had a sister at the very top of the food chain with the (now former) Governor of Illinois for a father who would have paid anything to keep a secret like that quiet?

Now, he had to decide what to do with the information. He’d never crawl to a richie for a handout, but family was family, right? Or, if Ace’s influence had anything to do with it, he could blackmail them until he was swimming in enough cash to set himself up for life.

DURING THE PARTY;

When Ace had finally given the go ahead for them to hand out the ass kicking Sodapop had earned himself, Dion couldn't have been happier to oblige. Sure, he was following orders because he basically owed Ace his life, but he agreed with the punishment as well. Too many greasers had gone soft, had sold out and turned tail as soon as they'd had the chance. Only Two-Bit still held some clout in his opinion, despite him snitching on his old man. At least the guy wasn't afraid of a fight, and was proud of where he'd come from.

Like the rest of the boys he'd taken his turns making sure Scott remembered what he'd signed up for when he'd come running to the gang with his chest puffed out and all those rebellious ideals fluttering around in his head. If it had been one on one the middle Cruz would have stood a chance, the guy could fight better than most of them, which was exactly why the four of them were on him. By the time they were done he was a mess, yet Ace still had to put the cherry on top. It all seemed too flamboyant to Dion, but that was Ace's way so as long as it stayed directed at anyone that wasn't him, he had nothing to say about it.

If he'd had his way they would have at least dropped Scott closer to the hospital - they were only sending a message, not trying to have him freeze to death in a snowdrift - but none of them had a car and the snow had been too treacherous for their bikes, so they didn't have much of a choice but to leave him to find his own way home.

Dion had more important things to worry about anyway, like how he was going to manage to ditch the rest of the guys and find his maybe-sister. If Ace knew what he was up to he'd be labelled a traitor like the rest of them, no questions asked, even if he wasn't looking for a way out, just some answers. If he could help it, he was trying to avoid being laid up in the emergency room next to Scott.

Being of the social status Bunny was, it was near impossible for him to get close to her on a normal day, so a public event felt like the best chance to at least try to get an idea of how she'd respond to his claim. If she was as much of a dragon as people said she was, he wasn't above blackmail, but he wasn't as short-fused as Ace. Violence and intimidation was an answer, but not always the answer. Especially when it came to people who could have his ass thrown into jail to rot with a snap of their fingers. Hopefully things wouldn't go that far though. Hopefully he'd get his foot in the door and somehow find a way to use their shared blood for the good of the gang.

I am a firm believer in a movie tie-in song. It seems like an all but dead thing. Even Ryan Reynolds missed them hence he and DEADPOOL 2 producers bringing in Celine Dion to do the tie-in song/video "Ashes".

Prior to that I can only think of the rarities like Hozier's sweeping "Better Love" from THE LEGEND OF TARZAN and going back a bit further Rihanna's Sia co-penned "Sledgehammer" for STAR TREK BEYOND and Take That's "Get Ready For It". Well it is fka Twigs' turn with her James Bond-ian tie-in song for December's THE KING'S MAN, "Measure of a Man" featuring Central Cee.

-Also in December is SING 2 featuring KINGSMAN vet Taron Egerton and other returnees such as Scarlett Johannson, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey.

The sequel is in line with the original but is more ambitious storywise.

SING 2 -NO SPOILERS

Buster Moon (McConaughey) has made almost all of his dreams come true: his theatre is up and running and garnering sold out crowds, but he is still shooting for the big time.

When Suki (Chelsea Peretti), the talent scout for businessman/hotelier Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale) tells Moon he and his troupe of performers are too small potatoes to qualify for an audition with Mr. Crystal,

Moon and troupe descends on his hotel in hopes for an audition anyway.

Failings to impress Crystal with their talents, Moon snares him with the promise of getting reclusive former singer Clay Calloway (Bono) to perform in his proposed show.

From there the race is on to find Clay and convince him to be in their play and oh, yeah, actually write said play.

If you enjoyed the first one you should enjoy this one although it does, at times, feels as if there are too many characters to fully service properly. As always, the strength is the music and Jennings has amassed some great songs for his cast to take on. Halsey as Crystal's entitled daughter Porsha smashes Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" and The Struts "Could Have Been Me",

Tori Kelly kills every song she sings, Scarlett Johannson gives a beautiful rendition of U2's "Stuck in a Moment" (hearing all these U2 songs covered had me wanting their own musical set to their songs ala "Across the Universe") . Sadly, Taron Egerton only sings a truncated version of Shawn Mendes' "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" (though I have heard a snippet of he and Tori Kelly covering it)

Newbies Eric Andre (as the vain Darius), Leticia Wright (as street dancer Nooshy) and Pharrell Williams (as the sweet Alfonso) are welcomed, albeit underutilized, addtions.

-After the screening was a brief Q&A with writer/director Garth Jennings

He talked about:

-How the idea for the sequel came one year before finishing the first film.

-That while he thinks Seth McFarlane is a fantastic singer he wanted McFarlane character, the smarmy Mike to "go away". But he says if there is another "Sing" film he would like to maybe see the character again.

-Is a huge Prince fan (he still has a towel that Prince threw into the audience at a concert) so was thrilled to be able to use "Let's Go Crazy".

-Pitched the role of Clay to Bono who granted use of several U2 songs. When they were wrapping up the call Bono mentioned he had a song idea for the film. Chalking it up to one of those things people say but won't follow through on ("Like saying "Let's meet up for dinner.' The person isn't lying it's just that life gets in the way.") He was surprised when, after his first time laying down his lines, Bono pulled out his phone so Jennings could listen to the song he wrote "Your Song Saved My Life". Jennings was worry that he wouldn't like it and was thinking on how to school his face in case that happened but he loved the song.

-Bono offered to audition for the role because he wanted to be sure it was something he could do.

They advertise on such notable venues as Fox ‘News’, Daily Mail, New York Post, and Mashable, so they must be a straight-up business, right?  Sheesh … have people really got nothing better to do with their money?  Remember that expression … “A fool and his money are soon parted”?  Seems there are companies like this one looking to assist in that parting.

When in Idaho …

Back in 2012, the Idaho Potato Commission commissioned a giant potato sculpture to mark its 75th anniversary.  For the past seven years, the potato has toured the nation promoting … potatoes.  Well, the day came that the commission decided they needed a new potato, but what to do with the old one?  I mean, one doesn’t just throw away a perfectly good potato, right?And so was born the Big Idaho Potato Hotel.  Now, I think that calling it a ‘hotel’ is a bit of a stretch, for it only accommodates one person or couple at a time, but so be it.  The structure is 28 feet long, 12 feet wide and 11-1/2 feet tall, weighs six tons, and the bathroom is in a nearby detached silo.

The Big Idaho Potato Hotel has now been outfitted with insulation, a wood floor, electricity, running water, heating and air conditioning. The room is furnished with a queen-sized bed, two chairs and an antler chandelier. The hotel is listed on Airbnb for $200 per night and reservations begin in late May.

  Here’s one you don’t hear every day …

A man named Dion Calloway is an experienced skydiver and last weekend he and some friends went for a dive out in Sonoma County, California.  As he was falling, a gust of wind caught him in just the wrong way and … his leg flew off!  Did I mention that Dion wears a prosthetic leg?

When he landed, he and his friends went in search of the $15,000 appendage, but with no luck. On Monday morning, employees at the Cloverdale Lumber Yard arrived to work and were scratching their heads, puzzled by the sight of a prosthetic leg in the yard.  They called the Sheriff’s department who did some investigating and found that Mr. Calloway had reported his leg missing to airport staff the previous day.  Happily, the man and his leg were soon reunited.

But the ultimate irony is that Dion lost his natural leg a few years ago in a skydiving accident!  Personally, by now I would have decided to keep my feet … er, foot … on the ground, but Dion says he will fashion a tether to ensure it doesn’t happen again, and will soon be right back up in the air!  My hat is off to him!

Calif. Skydiver’s Prosthetic Leg Survives 10,000-Foot Fall

When skydiver Dion Calloway's prosthetic leg came loose at 10,000 feet then fell to earth in Sonoma County on Sunday, he figured he had lost his left leg for a second time.

Calloway, of Santa Rosa, was laughing on Monday night, amazed that his $15,000 prosthetic leg looks exactly like it did before he and some friends went skydiving in Cloverdale.

Calloway recounted what happened: "Right out the door, I felt it loosen up. It came off about six inches. I reached back and put it back on and thought it would stay. I flew up to the circle, and I watched it take off."

Fortunately, the leg happened to land on top of a somewhat forgiving pile of sawdust at a lumber yard right next door to the airport. An employee on Monday told deputies a man with a prosthetic leg had jumped the day before.

Calloway lost his natural left leg two years ago during a skydiving accident.

"What I tried to do was like a high-speed landing and just messed up," he recalled. "I came in too low, too fast. I exploded the heel."

When asked if he’d ever go skydiving again, Calloway replied: "Yep. Absolutely. Next weekend."

During his next jump, Callaway said he’ll be taking precautions to keep his wits and his leg about him.

"The owner of Norcal Skydiving built a tether that basically goes around my waist, around the leg here and then around the lower leg," he explained.
