elsewhere on the internet: Indian social movements
'Women Don’t Give Up.' Why Female Protesters Are at the Forefront of India's Resistance Movement
Nilanjana Bhowmick (Jan 2020, Time) @nilanjanab
Bhowmick situates the current protests within the histories of women-led movements in India such as the Narmada dam protests, which began in 1985 and continue to this day
The Narmada Bachao Andolan (Save Narmada Movement) is perhaps the longest non-violent movement in the history of the world driven primarily by women. Issues that affect habitat, livelihood or right to shelter, Patkar says, can mobilize women faster. It was launched in 1985 by Patkar, to protest against a series of large dam projects across the Narmada River that flows through three Indian states (Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra) and demand just compensation for around 32,000 people who were displaced as a result of the project.
The movement managed to pressure the World Bank—one of the sponsors of the project—to withdraw funding in 1993. In 2017, India’s top court awarded 681 displaced people in Madhya Pradesh—a major beneficiary of the Narmada project—compensation of $90,000 each.
A few months after the court order, the women, led by Patkar, stood neck-deep in the cold water of the Narmada River on a chilly September morning, in what they called a “water protest,” an essential feature of the protest movement. They were in a village in Madhya Pradesh to demand justice for 40,000 families who were at risk of flood because of the Sardar Sarovar Dam, a centerpiece of the Narmada project. For five hours, they stood there.
Bhomwick recommended watching the documentary Saffron War: Radicalization of Hinduism.
Hindu Nationalism with Achin Vanaik (Oct 2019, DigRadio)
Vanaik wrote in the New Left Review in 2018: BJP is no ordinary party: its nervous system is supplied by a 1930s-style, uniformed, hard-line Hindu-nationalist cadre force, the rss, which also controls a wide array of civil-society organizations, known collectively as the Sangh.

DigRadio on Andy Sanborn: 'What a [bleeping] [bleep]'
DigRadio Boston hosts Goddamn Glenn and Anngelle Wood had a few choice words for state Sen. Andy Sanborn after the threatening email he wrote to a constituent became public:
I want my fans to get on the phone, call Mr. Sanborn relentlessly and [ask him to] issue an apology to this kid who basically wrote a letter about the decriminalization of marijuana. Mr. Sanborn decided to take it upon himself to write back and say, 'I am going to contact your prospective college, the places you're applying to for college.'
What a [bleeping] [bleep]. What kind of bullshit is that? What a [bleeping] fascist. These guys, these [bleeps]. They're always about freedom, individual rights, small government... Oh yeah, Big Brother's going to come down and call your [bleeping] mom and your college to rat you out.
