Today, I found out that my brother's partner is too young to remember the events mentioned in this song.*
Today, I listened to this song again and felt torn in half that Hello, Birmingham is 25 years old, and I'm still feeling oh so powerless in this stupid booth with this useless little lever in my hand.**
Today, I am thinking about how the part that the Sages didn't explain to us when they said that we are not obligated to finish the work is that you can't actually finish the work. They didn't explain that it's impossible to finish the work, and that's why we are not free to desist from it. Tomorrow, we will still have to root out the weeds and feed our neighbors.
Today, I'm listening to the detuned piano discomfiting my nerves and understanding that there will always be people who only understand the world in terms of boots on necks, and some of the people standing next to me just hope to be the ones with their feet in the next set of boots. Today, I can't ignore that, either, and tomorrow someone's going to think I don't mean them when I say that, but I do. I do.
But today, I also know that I am still here on this Earth because I was also once escorted through the doors of a clinic by a man in a bulletproof vest, and no bombs went off that day, either, so I am still here to say to you, if you are too young to remember, all of the things we have been through, and the things we will go through together as we face down this election day and the days after.
Today, it's hard to deal with the fact that these things are worse twenty-five years later, but tomorrow, we'll keep working on making them better again. Some days, that's not enough, but it's going to have to be. It's all we have.
* This and this. [cw murder & anti-choice violence]
** Yes, we vote by mail in OR. That's not the fucking point.
#abortion#history#choice#do not fucking bother me about the dumbass choices ani difranco has made#the song is still intensely important to my personal history#Youtube

Things that I want but know will never happen is a euridyce that sings in a style closer to the concept and nytw
#im not a music guy so I don’t have the terminology for this so bear with me.#that style of singing is so much more interesting to me#and it fits with the aspects of hadestown that I enjoy more#the folkiness…briefly we had it when ani difranco was playing Persephone#I want to hear anäis Mitchell sing the euridyce verse in wait for me ii#like don’t get me wrong. eva and those after her are good and set a specific tone#but got. the I guess? wail? of concept/nytw tickles my brain so well#like chant i when euridyce sings shelter us and it gets really high pitch#it’s so frantic sounding#OR. the way they sing kinda wonder how it feels in way down i#like it may not be pretty? necessarily especially the moment in chant i pointed out#but idk i feel it’s atypical to the usual sounds you hear on bway#feel free to lambast me if I’m wrong#hadestown

i just finished reading Working on a Song which is anais Mitchell going through Hadestown song by song and telling about the writing process and changes that were made from version to version and now I'm listening to every hadestown recording from the original concept album through broadway and it's so fun. i still miss persephone chant ii verse but i understand the choice to remove it now
#also having seen ani difranco's broadway persephone it's fun hearing her sing these older versions#hadestown

In the back room there's a lamp That hangs over the pool table And the fan that's on it swings Gently side to side There's a changing constellation Of balls as we are playing I see Orion and say nothing The only thing I can think of saying is
Fuck you And your untouchable face Fuck you For existing in the first place And who am I? That I should be vying for your touch I said who am I? I bet you can't even tell me that much

Your last post about Laudna finally not compartmentalizing so much is exactly why I love that Orym nodded to her and neither he nor Ashton stopped her, Ashton only coming to hold her after the deed was done. Some people are making this exclusively about Laudna not having her tether, and the parallel of Imogen stopping her before with FCG, but I don't think a repeat of that that would've been nearly as interesting. This was about Laudna, and Laudna alone, and I think she needed that.
Thank you! Yeah, this was a truly stellar Laudna episode. I think something interesting about Laudna is really how both she and others have always forced her to swallow betrayal. She's had to repeatedly listen to people praise her murderers - she's even had to listen to one of those murderers in her head, and indeed she's trapped between the two, in a way, when she kills Bor'Dor.
I would note: Imogen cast Calm Emotions on everyone - that wasn't directed at Laudna, but was rather an "everyone stop and let's talk through this", which Ashton and Orym also helped with. You're right! A repeat wouldn't be interesting, and it also wouldn't really make sense, because FCG clearly having some kind of episode is very different from a calculated betrayal. I just don't think it's comparable, even though she happened to cast the same spell.
The aftermath felt so much more centered on Laudna than the last time she used Hunger of the Shadow. When she spoke with Imogen after FCG in 3x31, the crux of the conversation was "this wasn't you, this was Delilah." In this episode it was Orym, Ashton, and Prism validating her feelings: Orym agreeing that Bor'Dor deserved death, Ashton telling Laudna it was okay that she felt hurt (and that even if it was Delilah, she's not lesser for giving in during a difficult moment), and Prism echoing both of them.
For Laudna (and Orym) it really feels like she finally had an opportunity to realize how justified her hurt and anger is and how much she had been pushing it down to become more palatable to others who would just keep taking and taking, and really, this episode allowed her to feel both incredibly powerful and triumphant, and incredible weak and in pain, and I was delighted to watch her have that range.
