Doctor Who: Big Finish, Alex Kingston Team for New River Song Stories
Alex Kingston will return as River Song for a new round of Big Finish's Doctor Who audio dramas set AFTER "Silence in the Library."
Now that Steven Moffat is back writing for Doctor Who, fans are speculating about whether River Song will be back. Alex Kingston certainly hasn't made it a secret that she would love to play the character again. But River Song never really went away. She's been headlining a River Song series in audio dramas from Big Finish for years since she had her final story on Doctor Who. Now she will star in The Death and Life of River Song, a brand-new series of full-cast audio dramas coming soon from Big Finish Productions. It's like a whole new season of River Song adventures – and the latest.
In case you didn't know, River Song is an archaeologist from the 52nd century, born and raised to be an assassin, destined to marry her intended target, and to have many of her own adventures too – Professor River Song's very messy timeline began (or maybe ended) when she first appeared in the 2008 Doctor Who TV episode Silence in the Library. Since then, Kingston has reprised the role in her own series of Doctor Who audio spinoffs, including The Diary of River Song, which ran from 2015 to 2023. Now, in August 2024, she will return in a brand-new series, The Death and Life of River Song.
The first box set in the series, Last Words, is written by Robert Valentine. It begins with River, after settling down to an afterlife in the Library's computer core, finding herself waking up in Earth's future, her consciousness having been temporarily transferred to a new body.
Alex Kingston said that River's stories at Big Finish have moved beyond her death in Doctor Who: "We have gone post-Library! We've done another episode in the past where I was within the database, which I loved, and I thought that's the only way you could go forward with River, given her situation. So, I was actually really surprised when this box set came my way and that we are now so far advanced in the history of Earth that she is able to be brought out as data and put into a cloned body. So very, very clever!"
Producer David Richardson added: "When every single day during the recording, your leading actress says "This script is brilliant," you know you're onto a good thing. Even better, at the end of the last day, Alex popped the script in her bag and announced that she loved Last Words so much she was taking it home to keep and treasure."
The Death and Life of River Song: Last Words is now available for pre-order exclusively here, either as a collector's edition four-CD box set for £29.99 or as a digital download for £22.99 per volume. Big Finish listeners can also pre-order a bundle with Last Words as well as Volumes 2 and 3 of The Death and Life of River Song, which are both due for release in 2025, for just £80 (collector's edition CDs + downloads) or £66 (downloads only). Hey everyone!
I’ve decided to use this space as a bit of a diary to track my journey and (hopefully) stay motivated to follow through! Starting Monday, 10/7/2024, I’m kicking off the 3-day military diet, aiming to stick with it for at least four weeks. That means by 10/31, I’ll have completed four rounds of the diet. I’m doing the classic 3-day plan, followed by four days of healthy eating, and repeating the cycle.
In addition to that, I’ll be committing to working out five days a week and getting back on track with my vitamins, which I’ve totally slacked on lately.
This is all part of my bigger plan to level up my life before 2025 hits. I want to kickstart a whole life reset and be completely unrecognizable by my birthday on 5/30/2025. My short-term goal is to lose 15-20 lbs by November 1, and if things are going well, I’ll continue with this plan through New Year’s. Ideally, I’d love to be down 30-40 lbs by then. Since I’m starting as someone who doesn’t work out much (I sit a lot and snack even more), I feel like this is a realistic goal.
Today was all about prepping! I did my grocery shopping, sorted out my vitamins, and dug up some of the workout gear I’ve bought over the years. I also took my starting photos, measurements, and weight, and put together a workout playlist to help get me pumped.
I’ve thought about vlogging the whole experience on YouTube as a way to stay accountable and motivated. Has anyone else done that? Did it help? I like the idea of sharing my progress, goals, and wins with someone besides my husband, but I’m still unsure. Let me know what you think!
Here’s to the start of something new!

The NHS has done it again, the absolute champions of arsing people about. Got the chirpiest little text today - you know the type, probably written by some bot that's been programmed to sound like your nan after three sherries. "Sorry sweetie, your appointment's cancelled! Teehee! We'll get back to you sometime between now and the heat death of the universe! XOXO"
Friday's appointment - the one I'd practically performed bloody circus acrobatics to arrange my life around - gone. Poof. Vanished like my will to live. I'd already cancelled two meetings, rearranged a dentist appointment, and told my mother-in-law I couldn't go to the shops with her. But no worries! I'll just sit here marinating in my own histamines while the medical establishment plays calendar Tetris with my life.
It's not like I've spent the last year feeling like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards, is it? Not as if I've been walking around looking like I've gone ten rounds with a particularly vindictive bunch of pollen, oh no. My face only swells up like a baboon's arse every other day - totally manageable! The constant itching? Character building! The random episodes of looking like I've been pepper-sprayed? Adds drama to my otherwise boring life!
But here's the best bit - they expect me to just... wait. Like I'm some sort of patient patient. Ha! Get it? Because I'm neither patient nor a proper patient yet, am I? Just another name on their ever-growing list of poor sods waiting to find out why their body's decided to declare war on bloody everything.
The real kicker is trying to maintain that perfect balance of being just annoying enough to stay on their radar without getting labeled as one of "those" patients. You know the type - the ones whose files probably have "HIGH MAINTENANCE" stamped across them in big red letters. Can't be too pushy, might hurt the receptionist's feelings. Can't be too passive, might die. It's like playing medical Goldilocks, trying to find the exact right amount of desperation to display.
So here I am, writing in my diary like some Victorian lady with the vapors, while my immune system continues its crusade against my existence. Maybe I should start a blog: "Adventures in Medical Limbo: Day 394 of Being Allergic to Life Itself." At least then my suffering would serve some sort of purpose, even if it's just entertainment for other poor bastards stuck in the same boat.
But don't worry! I'll soldier on, maintaining that perfect British stiff upper lip, even though said lip is currently doing its best impression of a balloon animal. Perhaps I'll develop some sort of superpower from all this waiting - like the ability to telepathically communicate with antihistamines or the power to sense when appointments are about to be cancelled.
In the meantime, I'll just keep documenting my slow descent into becoming one with Benadryl. Maybe by the time they finally see me, I'll have evolved beyond the need for medical intervention. Wouldn't that be a laugh?
P.S. If anyone needs me, I'll be in my room, practicing my "I'm fine, really" face for when I eventually do get an appointment. In 2025. Probably.

I, the oddball that I am, ordered a diary/planner for next year that was an on sale 2020 planner that I intended to go through manually and write in the date changes. Which when I told that to my housemate last week, he looked at me funny and I realised that it was indeed kinda Extra. Also, you know, he has plenty of money and I do not so there’s that lack of understanding; I figured it wouldn’t be too much effort if I did it while watching a film or similar to double up my use of time spent.
Anyhow, I’ve had one of them before and found it good and was excited to get another. They’re normally £15 but the 2020 surplus ones were £5 each and I don’t like the idea they’d go to waste either, assuming they were already printed - so I got 1 to change the dates on and another for a future year because I figured the same day/date combination will come round again in 2025.
They arrived today and bless her, the woman who runs the business - who had emailed me to ask if I definitely meant to order 2 for this year that’s almost finished - had upgraded 1 of them to the 2021 version free of charge, with a cute holly sprig drawing Happy Christmas post-it note on it. <3
So I’m gonna recommend them on here, because a) they are good planners, I came back a 2nd time for repeat custom, and b) I wanna pay the niceness forward too. If you’re interested they are at - https://ultimateplanners.co.uk/product/udp2021/ and she also has a digital pdf version available elsewhere on her shop.

Critic Of Music
Vocal type: Spinto-soprano. Positives: Legendary interpretive wit, thanks to incredible knowledge of musical phrasing and vocal pedagogy. A defining, trademarked voice. Incredible breath support, showing no signs of fatigue and carrying extensive legato passages with ease. Incredible utilization of dynamics, using all volumes from fortissimo to pianissimo and everything in between to craft incredible phrases. Great control of her passagio and incredibly balanced instrument. Powerful, resonant belts that are mixed with head voice, that are well-supported and healthy, projecting massive resonance with ease. A master of breath support. Able to rapid fire mid and upper belts. Her low notes are also well supported, dark and full. The head voice is resonant and piercing, full and fluid. Her vibrato is well developed and rolling, and can be executed with ease. Her timbre is velvety and luscious and makes for a perfect midrange. She is also able to sing complex melisma in all registers, with every register well connected. Her falsetto is light and sweet. She also has unparalleled register transitions, switching from chest to head, head to whistle, and even chest to whistle without as much of a pause. Pitch perfect in 99% of performances. Technically, a brilliant singer. Negatives: Occasionally raises her larynx in upper-belts.
K-Pop Vocal Analysis
Voice type: Soprano. Strengths: The strongest female singer in South Korea and arguably the entire current music scene. Consistent support, very well connected head voice, transitions are flawless, extreme control of dynamics and mixing, runs are precise and well articulated, nasality is almost never present in her singing. Points for improvement: Head voice can show issues with upper-belts, complicated vowels can create tension in her voice. Agility: The top vocalist in terms of agility and precision amongst korean singers, able to keep control of and flexibility in her runs and melismas. Her runs are precise in pitch and generally very well separated, every note is clear and the overall flow is good and natural. Musicianship: Arguably her second strongest virtue, Nina is not one to be labelled as a “karaoke” singer. Taking note from the general idea of self expression and vocal freedom, she always shows creativity and never delivers vocal performances that are exactly the same as another, being generally filled with new vocal melodies, playing with rhythm and vocal runs added by Nina herself, notably being able to always deliver accurate and precise changes to covers and her own original song performances.
