Austrian security officials say a 19-year-old was planning to kill "a large crowd of people" in a suicide attack at a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna.

Officials say the teen - who had previously pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group (IS) - confessed that he "intended to carry out an attack using explosives and knives".

He is one of two suspects arrested on Wednesday. A third, aged 18 and an acquaintance of the main suspect, was arrested on Thursday.

Swift's three sold-out shows at the Ernst Happel Stadium have been cancelled. More than 195,000 people had been expected to attend.

Local media have also reported that the 19-year-old had stolen chemicals from his former workplace.

The Kurier newspaper, citing sources, reported that he used to work at a metal processing company in his home town of Ternitz, and that he had made progress in building a bomb.

The outlet also reported that he had planned to drive a car into the crowd expected to gather outside the stadium.

Security officials at a news conference on Thursday did not comment on where he got the chemicals, but public security chief Franz Ruf told reporters that chemical substances and technical devices found at the main suspect's house showed "concrete preparatory actions".

The head of Austria's Directorate for Protection of the State and Intelligence (DSN) Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, said weapons were seized from the main suspect's house, and that "his aim was to kill himself and a large crowd of people either today or tomorrow at the concert".

Mr Ruf added the teen had posted a video online confessing to the plot, quit his job at the end of last month and told people that he had "big plans".

They also revealed that the main suspect - an Austrian citizen who was born there but who had North Macedonian parents - had recently changed his appearance and "adapted it to Islamic State propaganda", and had been consuming and sharing Islamist propaganda online.

A second suspect - a 17-year-old Austrian of Turkish or Croatian heritage - was employed at a company which would have "provided services" at the stadium where Swift was to perform.

The 19- and 17-year-olds have been remanded in custody.

A 15-year-old, who was "in the area" of the stadium at the time, is being questioned.

Despite officials saying that they were not looking for any more suspects, a third - an 18-year-old Iraqi citizen - was arrested in Vienna on Thursday evening, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said.

The man is also believed to have sworn an oath of allegiance to IS.

Speaking at the briefing on Thursday, Mr Karner said "a tragedy was averted", and the attack was foiled with the help of international intelligence as Austrian law does not allow censorship of messenger applications.

"The terrorist threat has intensified throughout Europe and Austria was and is no exception," he said, adding that major concerts are "often a favourite target of Islamist attackers".

Coldplay are due to perform seven concerts in Vienna from 21 August as part of their Spheres World Tour.

Mr Haijawi-Pirchner said there was no information suggesting a specific threat to upcoming events in Austria, but security measures remain high.

Swift's Vienna concerts were part of the European leg of her Eras Tour, which began in Paris in May.

The tour has made stops in a number of countries including Sweden, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Poland.

Swift is set to head to London to perform five shows at Wembley Stadium next week.

UK policing minister Diana Johnson said Scotland Yard would look at intelligence ahead of the Wembley Stadium dates.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has told Sky News that the city will "carry on" and that the police will work with City Hall and councils to ensure the concerts take place safely.

Giant Pictures shared the trailer for Luther: Never Too Much today. Marvin Gaye referred to Vandross as our "greatest balladeer" when someone tried to give Gaye that accolade. Dawn Porter directed the film and conducted interviews with Dionne Warwick, Jamie Foxx, Mariah Carey, Roberta Flack, Richard Marx, and Fonzi Thornton. Decades of archived footage of Vandross is in the film that debuted at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Vandross started his career as a teenager singing with the dance music group Shades of Jade. In the 1970s, he sang backup for Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Barbara Streisand, and David Bowie.  His voice was also heard in several jingles for Kentucky Fried Chicken, NBC, Juicy Fruit, Burger King, and Mountain Dew.

In the '80s, he was a featured vocalist with the group Change, and they had a hit with "The Glow of Love." He went solo, and in 1981, Never Too Much was released, and the title track went to number one. His first four albums went platinum, and he lit up the R&B scene with several classic songs like "Don't You Know That," "Bad Boy/Having A Party," "Since I Lost My Baby," "Give Me The Reason," "Wait For Love," his duet with Cheryl Lynn, "If This World Were Mine," and many more. Whitney Houston once compared Vandross's voice to "silver because it cannot break." The singer died in 2005 at the age of 54 after experiencing complications from a stroke. In the 19 years since his passing, music fans, critics, and artists have agreed that his voice is the standard for the male R&B singer. Luther: Never Too Much will have preview showings at AMC theaters on October 30th and open nationwide on November 1st.

Mohamed Al Fayed: Former Harrods owner dies at 94

Mohamed Al Fayed, the former Harrods boss whose son Dodi was killed in a car crash alongside Diana, Princess of Wales, has died aged 94.

Born in Egypt, he built a business empire in the Middle East before moving to the UK in the 1970s.

However, he never realised his ambition to gain a passport for his adopted country.

He spent his later years questioning the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Dodi and Diana.

Mr Al Fayed had remained largely out of the public limelight in the past decade, living in his Surrey mansion with his wife Heini.

In a statement released on Friday, his family said: “Mrs Mohamed Al Fayed, her children and grandchildren wish to confirm that her beloved husband, their father and their grandfather, Mohamed, has passed away peacefully of old age on Wednesday August 30, 2023.

“He enjoyed a long and fulfilled retirement surrounded by his loved ones.”

Michael Cole, a former BBC Royal correspondent who later worked for Mr Al Fayed as director for public affairs at Harrods, described him as “an extraordinary character”.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme Mr Al Fayed was a “fascinating and a larger than life” character and someone who was “full of humanity”.

Fulham Football Club, which Mr Al Fayed owned for many years, said that it was “incredibly saddened to learn” of his death.

“We owe Mohamed a debt of gratitude for what he did for our club, and our thoughts now are with his family and friends at this sombre time,” it said in a statement.

His successor at the club, Shahid Khan, expressed his condolences in a tribute on the club’s website.

“The story of Fulham cannot be told without a chapter on the positive impact of Mr Al Fayed as chairman,” he said.

“His legacy will be remembered for our promotion to the Premier League, a Europa League Final, and moments of magic by players and teams alike.”

Journalist Piers Morgan described Al Fayed as an “extraordinary tour de force of a man who never got over the death of his beloved son Dodi in the crash that also killed Diana”, adding that he was a “flawed, complex character” but that he liked him.

Mr Al Fayed rose from selling fizzy drinks on the streets of his native Alexandria in Egypt to become a big name in business with all the right contacts.

His break came after he met his first wife, Samira Khashoggi, the sister of Saudi millionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi – who employed him in his Saudi Arabian import business.

The role helped him forge new connections in Egypt, and although the marriage lasted little more than two years, Mr Al Fayed went on to launch his own shipping business.

In 1966, he became an adviser to one of the world’s richest men, the Sultan of Brunei.

He moved to Britain in 1974 and five years later bought the Ritz hotel in Paris with his brother Ali for £20m.

They went on to take over Harrods in 1985 for £615m, following a vicious bidding war with mining conglomerate the Lonrho group.

Under his ownership, Fulham FC rose from the third tier to the Premier League.

He gave generously to charities including Great Ormond Street Hospital and, as a father of five, showed a particular interest in helping underprivileged or unwell children.

He set up the Al Fayed Charitable Foundation in 1987 to better the lives of impoverished, traumatised and very sick youngsters.

It was from his Ritz hotel in Paris that his son Dodi, a film producer, and his then-partner Diana, Princess of Wales, departed, before the car crash which killed them both in 1997.

Mr Al Fayed never recovered from the shock of the crash, becoming obsessed with the speculation surrounding the deaths.

His evidence at the inquest in February 2008 included claims that the deaths were on the orders of Prince Philip and with the connivance of MI6.

They were deemed a “conspiracy theory” by the coroner and rejected by the jury.

Mr Al Fayed twice failed in his attempt to secure British citizenship.

On the second occasion in 1995, angered by the rejection, he told the press that he had paid two Conservative ministers, Neil Hamilton and Tim Smith, to ask questions in the House of Commons about his interests.

They both left the government, and Mr Hamilton, who denied the allegation, also lost a libel case against Mr Al Fayed.

A third politician, Jonathan Aitken, who was then a cabinet minister, also resigned after Mr Al Fayed revealed that he stayed for free at the Ritz in Paris at the same time as a group of Saudi arms dealers.

In 2010, Mr Al Fayed sold Harrods to the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar. Nearly half of the purchase price was used to clear the company’s debts.

Royal historian Prof Kate Williams said Mr Al Fayed was a man on a mission after his son’s death, but said he would also be remembered as a man who reshaped the iconic Harrods department store.

“It was his dream and his baby,” she said.
