Avicii's Coldplay collaboration presents an important person in the popular music from the late noughts on thanks to him being a part of a highly successful sound then. Moreover, he will probably be seen later on as one of the more tragic figures of the period. While he achieved a lot of success before his untimely death, I don't think he was ever really cherished as a fine electronic musician. Then again, the genre he worked in definitely contributed towards that opinion, since the idiom remains one of the most easily dismissed. Nonetheless, I do sort of get the apprehension as EDM became a joke, yet Avicii managed to outdo the latter's problems by making great stuff until his death. Who knows where he could've gone, had he still lived?

A K-Pop Fan’s A*Teens Appreciation Post

I always love K-pop idols with all my heart but there are times that I need to broaden my music preferences. I have some songs of Little Mix, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Boyzone & Westlife (all of them from Europe, specifically in Britain & Ireland) in my phone. 

Enter A*Teens, a Swedish pop group who debuted in 1998 (yes, my birth year). Though I didn’t stan them or heard about them when I was a kid during their heydays. But I take a risk in discovering artists that is unfamiliar to me now that I’m 18 & Spotify & YouTube exists 

Back in the elementary days, my dad will always play Abba’s music & somehow have a LSS though I was born decades after Abba’s heyday. 

A*Teens started as a tribute/cover group of Abba. Their debut album “The Abba Generation” contains covers of the legendary quartet with contemporary beats market the young audience 

To identify A*Teens members is really really easy... there are 2 guys & 2 girls. Plus they have the Blonde line (Dhani & Marie) & the Eurasian line (Amit & Sara)

Let’s learn the members (& their equivalent Abba counterpart & modern day Kpop idols positions based on their live performances) :

Marie Serneholt is the oldest, lead vocalist & “Anni-Frid” (the redhead of Abba). You can identify her with her blonde hair (tho she ditched her signature blonde hair post A*Teens). 

Amit Sebastian Paul is the hyung, main dancer (his dance skills are no joke), sub vocalist, meme king (because of his awkward expressions in their early music videos) & “Benny” (the keyboardist of ABBA, oh, he can play piano also). He is a half-Swedish, half-Indian & identified with his dark hair. During his days as a member of A*Teens, he always have the fewest lines (you’re not the only one Sungyeol)  but not in “I Promised Myself” because the boys got the most lines.

Dhani Lennevald is the sub vocalist, lead dancer, visual & “Bjorn” (the guitarist). He is the tallest & the blonde guy. Just like Amit,he always got the fewest lines but he is the first in line distribution ranking in “Floor Filler” & “I Promised Myself”. He is also the sexy member of the group (post A*Teens, he dabbled in modelling). He can also play guitar. 

Sara Helena Lumholdt is the maknae, main vocalist & “Agnetha” (the blonde... how ironic). She is the smol member but has a big voice. Even at her young age, her charisma is really evident in every performance. All of A*Teens are beagles  

I stan them because THEY ARE TALENTED... Despite of the hate comments they received, they still do their best to give their best performance to the fans. Despite they debuted before I was born, I still listen to them without judgement. The fragment of memories of A*Teens is the song “Upside Down” & “Dancing Queen” MV.

Mona Najib – Howlin’

Last December we wrote about the Swedish artist’s debut single Limbo, a firm favourite at New and Brave.

On her new single Howlin’, Najib (based in LA) has again teamed up with her ‘brother from another mother’ Sandro Cavazza (Swedish singer/songwriter who featured on the Lost Frequencies “Beautiful Life” last year) and Dhani Lennevald (notably, a former member of chart-topping band A-Teens, known for their debut album of electronic ABBA covers in the late 90s).

Q: Congratulations on the new single – I’m loving it. It’s quite cinematic and melancholy in feel – how did this song come about?

A: Thank you so much! I wrote "Howlin'" with my good friend Sandro Cavazza last year when I was visiting Sweden. We actually wrote it at his Grandmother’s house where there was an upright piano. I played a progression that we both liked and so we started messing around with some melody and lyric ideas. Earlier that day, we’d had a conversation about our childhood and how we've become the people we are today. That conversation kind of made its way into the lyrics and that's really how the song was created. As for the sound, we took the song to Dhani Lennevald who also did some production on my previous single "Limbo". I always enjoy working with Dhani, he's incredibly talented.

Q: In many ways this feels like a continuation of themes from “Limbo” – the lyrics again touching on your nomadic spirit, and whether the need to keep moving is welcome or unwanted, once you start that compulsion always stays with you – is it a case of damned if you do and damned if you don’t?

A: For me it was about acceptance. It took me a very long time to embrace the part of me that always wants to ”keep moving”. There’s nothing wrong with being restless, you just have to learn how to utilize it. I believe my restlessness was result of not being fully comfortable with my identity. I just didn’t know where I belonged so I was always on some sort of journey trying to ”find myself”. I know a lot of it is just what you go through as a young adult and as a woman. For me, my insecurities just led to a lot of bad decisions. I can easily point out things in my past I know I didn’t do for the right reasons. Although that is part of life, making mistakes and learning from them, "Howlin’" is speaking to that young woman that continuously makes those same mistakes over and over again.

Q: I’ve heard on the grapevine that you had some music featured in a TV show. Tell us about that, it sounds very exciting.

A: It was a great experience! My friends John Rausch, Brian Brundage and I wrote a song for Freeform last year. They had heard "Limbo" and wanted something similar so the three of us wrote "Run Me”. I actually don’t know if it’s been used in any of their shows yet, but they have featured the song on social media for ”Pretty Little Liars" and a new show called "Famous in Love”.

Q: What’s next – maybe an EP or album? (pretty please!)

A: Yes, hopefully soon! For the past few months I've been writing and recording with a really talented songwriter and producer Jason Goldman. We’ll most likely release a few singles later this year, perhaps an EP as well. Besides that I've been working on putting together live shows where I'll play some of these new songs. I'm really looking forward to it!
