11 Dead After Jumping Off Train Over Fire Rumour, Getting Hit By Another
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis mourned the loss of lives, adding that he is in touch with the district administration and all assistance is being provided.
Tumblr media
Eleven people were killed after a fire rumour on a train crossing Maharashtra's Jalgaon triggered panic among passengers, with several of them jumping off the train and getting hit by another, said the police. The death count was confirmed to NDTV by Jalgaon's Superintendent of Police.
The accident took place between Maheji and Pardhade stations near Pachora, 400 km away from Mumbai, where the Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express, a Daily Superfast Express train that runs between Lucknow to Mumbai, had halted after someone pulled the chain due to a rumour of fire around 5 pm, Central Railway officials said.
Some passengers of the Pushpak Express stepped down, and were hit by the oncoming Karnataka Express, heading from Bengaluru to Delhi, said Central Railway's chief spokesperson Swapnil Nila.
"Our preliminary information is that there were sparks inside one of the coaches of Pushpak Express due to either 'hot axle' or 'brake-binding' (jamming), and some passengers panicked. They pulled the chain, and some of them jumped down on the tracks. At the same time, Karnataka Express was passing on the adjoining track," a senior railway official told news agency PTI.
An accident relief train has been dispatched from Bhusaval, said the Central Railway, adding that all efforts are being made to provide medical aid to the injured passengers.
Harrowing images showed bodies lying on tracks and some people wandering around with blood all over them.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis mourned the loss of lives, adding that he is in touch with the district administration and all assistance is being provided.
"The loss of lives in the unfortunate incident near Pachora in Jalgaon district is deeply distressing. I express my condolences to the families of those killed. My colleague, minister Girish Mahajan, and the Superintendent of Police have reached the spot, and the District Collector will reach there shortly," Mr Fadnavis posted on X in Marathi.
"The entire district administration is working in coordination with the railway administration, and immediate arrangements are being made for the treatment of the injured. Eight ambulances have been dispatched. The general hospital as well as other nearby private hospitals have been kept ready for the treatment of the injured. Emergency equipment like glass cutters, floodlights etc. have also been kept ready. We are monitoring the entire situation and all necessary assistance is being provided immediately. I am in touch with the district administration," the Chief Minister added.
Maharashtra minister Gulabrao Patil, who is also the guardian minister of Jalgaon, said senior officials are reaching the spot.

Maharashtra Unfiltered: Raw Politics, Daily Delivered – 21 November 2024
The political scene in Maharashtra is very exciting right now because everyone is waiting for the results of the November 20, 2024, assembly elections. With an average turnout of about 65.11 percent, this election is a big deal in Maharashtra’s political history because it shows that people are more interested in politics than in the past [1, 2, 7].
Important political figures and groups
Mahayuti, which is made up of the ruling BJP, the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar), and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which is made up of Congress, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), and NCP (Sharad Pawar), fought hard in the elections. Key people like Uddhav Thackeray, who leads the MVA, and Devendra Fadnavis, who represents the BJP in Maharashtra, have a lot at stake. Both leaders have played a big role in shaping their parties’ strategies and attempts to reach out to voters [3, 4].
Predictions for the election and controversies
- Advertisement -
As exit polls came out after the election, they showed that the Mahayuti alliance might have won. Several polls showed that the Mahayuti could win between 125 and 140 seats, and that the MVA could come in close behind with between 135 and 150 seats. This close election makes it more likely that there will be a hung assembly, which could mean tough talks and power struggles between parties[2, 6].
An important member of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Sanjay Raut, was sure that the MVA would win between 160 and 165 seats and that their alliance would make the government stable. This bold statement has caused a lot of discussion in the political world, especially since different exit polls show that Mahayuti won [7].
Public Participation and Public Opinion
People are becoming more interested in politics, as shown by the high voter turnout—the best since the 1995 assembly elections. There are many reasons for this rise in participation, such as important issues like unemployment, inflation, and social justice groups that have touched voters of all ages and backgrounds [5, 6].
There are also signs that Maharashtra’s diverse population is shifting its allegiances, with many voters putting individual candidates ahead of traditional party memberships. Maharashtra’s political landscape may need to change because of this trend. Parties may need to change their methods to appeal to voters who are becoming more picky.
How this affects the future of politics in Maharashtra
The election results will be made public on November 23, 2024. They will not only decide who runs Maharashtra, but they will also affect future political ties and plans. If there is a hung assembly, it could lead to alliances or even re-alignments between parties that have never happened before. This would have a big effect on how the state is governed and policies are made.
How each party handles this election cycle will also set the tone for future elections, especially the important Lok Sabha elections in 2024. As both alliances try to gain more power and meet the urgent needs of their people, their work will be closely watched.
In short, Maharashtra’s assembly elections have shown how political goals, voter opinion, and strategic moves by important players all affect each other in complicated ways. While we wait for the final results, one thing is clear: the state’s politics are changing quickly. This is typical of Indian politics as a whole, where individual candidates and important social and economic problems are making traditional loyalties less important.

Maharashtra’s Next CM: BJP Set to End Suspense, Rules Out Power-Sharing
The suspense over Maharashtra's next Chief Minister may finally end today as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership gears up to make an official announcement. The party, which emerged as the single largest in the recent assembly elections, is reportedly adamant about reinstating Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister. Sources within the BJP have dismissed speculation about a “Bihar formula,” where power-sharing involves rotational chief ministership.
The “Bihar formula” gained attention after similar arrangements were seen in the BJP-JD(U) coalition government in Bihar. However, senior BJP leaders have clarified that Maharashtra’s political dynamics are different and do not warrant such a compromise. “We have a clear mandate, and Devendra Fadnavis’s leadership is non-negotiable,” said a senior BJP official.
BJP Allies and Strategy
While the BJP is steadfast on Fadnavis's candidacy, discussions have been ongoing with potential alliance partners to form a stable government. The party is reportedly reaching out to independents and smaller regional outfits to secure the majority needed to govern.
The delay in announcing the Chief Minister’s name has fueled speculation and political maneuvering among rival parties. The opposition has criticized the BJP for the prolonged stalemate, accusing it of prioritizing internal governance disputes.
Fadnavis's Track Record
Devendra Fadnavis, who served as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister from 2014 to 2019, has been a key figure in state politics. Known for his developmental initiatives and administrative capabilities, Fadnavis enjoys strong support within the BJP and among a significant section of the electorate.
His leadership is credited with steering the BJP to a dominant position in Maharashtra, although the party fell short of an outright majority in the latest elections. Fadnavis’s supporters argue that his return to the CM’s office would ensure continuity and stability.
Opposition's Response
Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT), have criticized the BJP for its inability to announce a government quickly. NCP leader Sharad Pawar remarked, “The people of Maharashtra deserve clarity and governance, not endless suspense.”
As the day unfolds, all eyes are on the BJP’s decision. Will the party stick to its guns and back Fadnavis, or will political compulsions push them toward a compromise? The outcome will undoubtedly shape Maharashtra’s political landscape for the foreseeable future.

How Can the Juvenile Board Issue Such an Order?" Fadnavis on Pune Porsche Crash
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has vowed stringent action against the teenager responsible for a fatal car crash in Pune. The 17-year-old, driving a high-end Porsche, collided with a motorbike, resulting in the immediate deaths of two IT professionals. Fadnavis criticized the “lenient” punishment imposed by the Juvenile Justice Board, which required the teen to write a 300-word essay on accidents, work with the traffic police for 15 days, and undergo counselling for alcohol consumption. “How can the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Board give such an order?” he questioned.
Tumblr media
The incident occurred early Sunday in the Kalyani Nagar area when the allegedly intoxicated teenager, driving his father’s Porsche, struck and killed Ashwini and Aneesh. Witnesses reported that Ashwini was thrown 20 feet into the air, while Aneesh was propelled into a parked car.
Fadnavis stated, “We have appealed to the district court against the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Board’s order. There is significant public outrage. I have reviewed the latest investigation updates.”
The teen, son of a well-known Pune realtor, was reportedly seen drinking with friends at a bar hours before the crash. Police have arrested the bar owners for serving alcohol to minors, as the legal drinking age in Maharashtra is 25. According to police, the boy visited two restaurants with a group of 10–12 friends on Saturday night, where they were served alcohol.
Fadnavis highlighted that the teen, being 17 years and 8 months old, should be considered an adult for heinous crimes, referencing the Nirbhaya case provisions.
The teen was apprehended but released on bail within 15 hours, igniting public outrage. His father has since been arrested under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act for willful neglect and supplying intoxicating liquor to a minor.
Fadnavis outlined government measures to prevent similar incidents, stating, “We have alerted the administration to take strict action against pubs violating the law and to increase police checks for drink driving at key locations.”
The crash has also stirred political controversy, with Uddhav Thackeray camp leader Sanjay Raut criticizing the Pune Police for the perceived delay in acting against the teen.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar asserted that he had requested permission from the board to try the minor as an adult and place him in an observation home due to the heinous nature of the crime, but this request was denied. The police have since approached the District Court.
Kumar challenged critics to substantiate claims that the police acted under pressure or leniency towards the accused, noting the teen’s father is a prominent real estate developer in Pune.
Additionally, the owner of Cosie Bar has been arrested for allegedly serving alcohol to the minor and his friends. Kumar assured that the police are building a “watertight case to prosecute the teen, emphasizing, “Despite the blood report outcome, we aim to establish this as a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.”

Ashok Chavan Latest To Quit Congress After Milind Deora, Baba Siddique
In a big blow to the Congress in Maharashtra months ahead of the general election and state polls, former chief minister and former MP Ashok Chavan resigned from the party's primary membership amid reports that he was in talks with the BJP. The senior leader may get a ticket to the Rajya Sabha, according to sources.
Tumblr media
Mr Chavan, who represents Bhokar in the Assembly, met Speaker Rahul Narvekar and handed in his resignation. If he joins the BJP, it will be the second big switchover in Maharashtra after Congress leader Milind Deora quit the party last month and joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
Earlier, BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had been asked if Mr Chavan is joining the party. "I heard about Ashok Chavan from media. But only thing I can say now is that several good leaders from Congress are in touch of BJP. Those leaders who are connected with the masses are feeling suffocated in Congress. I am confident that some big faces will join Congress," he had then said.
According to Congress sources, Mr Chavan's differences with state party chief Nana Patole on selection of candidates may have played a major role in his decision to switch sides.
Son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan, Ashok Chavan wields significant influence in the Nanded region and this switch may hurt the Congress in the upcoming polls. This also plays out against the backdrop of the tall poll challenge facing the Maha Vikas Aghadi -- comprising the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, the Sharad Pawar camp of NCP and the Congress.
Ashok Chavan has had an eventful political journey so far. Starting out as a student leader during his college days, he went on to hold key posts in the Congress, including Maharashtra Congress chief and a member of the Congress Working Committee. He has served as an MP from Nanded on two occasions and been a member of both Houses of the state legislature.
After serving as state minister, he was chosen for the Chief Minister post after Vilasrao Deshmukh stepped down in the aftermath of the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai. The Congress retained him on the top post after the 2009 state polls. The stint was, however, short as Mr Chavan was forced to step down amid corruption allegations related to the Adarsh Housing Society scam.
Responding to Mr Chavan's decision, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took a "washing machine" jab -- washing machine is an oft-repeated reference the Congress uses to accuse the BJP of stalling criminal investigations against Opposition leaders who switch to their side.
When friends and colleagues leave a political party that has given them much — perhaps much more they deserved—it is always a matter of anguish. But to those who are vulnerable THAT Washing Machine will always prove more attractive than ideological commitment or personal loyalties," Mr Ramesh said. "These betrayers don't realise that their exit opens up vast new opportunities to those whose growth they have always stunted," he added.

First Session of Maharashtra Assembly Begins Amid Changed Political Dynamics
The three-week Monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly, which holds significant value, commenced after the recent political developments following Ajit Pawar's rebellion within Sharad Pawar's NCP. The session, scheduled from July 17 to August 4, presents a unique scenario with former opposition members now serving as Cabinet Ministers.
The political dynamics within the Assembly have shifted as Ajit Pawar parted ways with Sharad Pawar and aligned himself with the ruling Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance, with the support of a majority of NCP MLAs. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that the combined strength of the Shiv Sena-BJP-NCP alliance is over 210 MLAs in the 288-seat assembly.
Speaker Rahul Narwekar recently commented on the power dynamics within the NCP following the split, highlighting the blurred distinction between those in power and those outside of it. Extensive discussions and debates are expected to determine the authentic representation of the NCP.
On the eve of the Assembly session, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, addressed a joint press conference. Shinde urged the opposition parties, including Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and the Sharad Pawar faction of NCP, to hold the government accountable for the welfare of the people. He acknowledged the importance of constructive criticism but remarked that the opposition seemed to have lost hope and appeared confused.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that despite the increased numbers of the alliance, the government would not misuse its position in the Assembly. He emphasized that all issues raised by the opposition regarding the welfare of the people would be addressed.
The Monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly will witness discussions on 24 proposed bills, with 10 already approved by the Cabinet. The remaining 14 bills will be tabled subsequently after Cabinet approval. Additionally, a bill passed by the Legislative Council will be presented, and a bill pending with the joint committee of both houses is expected to be tabled.
Furthermore, six ordinances currently in effect will be presented for approval by the legislature during the Monsoon session. These legislative actions demonstrate the government's commitment to addressing the pressing issues faced by the state and its people.
As the first session of the Maharashtra Assembly unfolds amidst the changed political landscape, all eyes are on the discussions, debates, and decisions that will shape the future course of governance in the state.

Devendra Fadnavis questions VBA chief Prakash Ambedkar for his latest visit to Aurangzeb's tomb
On Sunday, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that no Muslim in India is a descendant of Aurangzeb. He also added that Muslims with a nationalist mindset do not consider the Mughal emperor as their leader.
He also called out Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar for his latest visit to Aurangzeb's tomb in Aurangabad district as well as questioned Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray for how he can approve such an act.
The visit of the VBA leader to the tomb on Saturday was associated with the latest controversy after some social media posts glorifying Aurangzeb were circulated.
"What happened in Akola, Sambhajinagar, and Kolhapur was not a coincidence, but it is an experiment. How come so many sympathizers of Aurangzeb surface in the state?" Mr. Fadnavis asked while addressing a public rally.
"How can Aurangzeb be our leader? Our king is only one and that is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj...The Muslims in India, even though they are not descendants of Aurangzeb. Tell me who is the descendant of Aurangzeb? Aurangzeb and his forefathers came from outside," he said.
"The nationalist Muslims in this country do not endorse him and they recognize only Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as their leader," he added.
He targeted Mr Ambedkar for his visit to the tomb saying "Ambedkar says Aurangzeb ruled our country for a long period. So Hitler also ruled Germany. Many people used to revere Hitler like a God...It was not expected from you. Uddhav Thackeray has allied with Ambedkar. So do you (Thackeray) accept Ambedkar's act?"
