I just watched the documentary called One Child Nation and I want to get my thoughts down before I forget them. Wow-- so this film is basically about China’s one child policy and how STRICTLY they enforced that people are not allowed to have more than one child. Family’s had to abandon their kids in markets and leave them to die. Mothers were FORCED-- literally forced-- to become sterilized or have abortions. They had to be drug, tied up, and brought into hospitals. Some of these aborted fetuses were 8 to 9 months developed. I honestly don’t know how you would abort a baby that developed. Could you imagine? Could you imagine carrying a baby in your body for 9 months giving birth and then being forced to put that baby in the trash? There was a man who said that when he was 18 years old he would drive around his town and see about four or five abandoned babies a day. I can’t even wrap my mind around that. Millions and millions of babies were being killed. Around 30 million I think were either aborted or left to die in garbage dumps while this law was in place. This aforementioned man started collecting these babies with his family and selling them to orphanages where they were later given for international adoption. They are heroes. They are angels. Literally saving the lives of more than 10,000 children. They were labelled as human traffickers by the Chinese government and given 10 years in jail. Their lives were ruined. I cannot imagine the kind of human suffering people went through. The Chinese government forcibly removed and kidnapped children from families. Some had twins. But their kid was kidnapped and taken away, never to be seen again. This makes my heart stir. It makes me remember my humanness. It makes my stupid problems feel small. It makes me realize how privileged i am. How LUCKY i am. I am an indian baby born in America given the absolutely best life possible. I am lucky. I am one in a million lucky for even being BORN. and then I am again one in a million lucky for having a comfortable easy life and sleeping with a full happy tummy every night. It wasn’t just this one child policy that struck me. It was the very difficult lives that many of these village people had. Going hungry. Barely surviving. Being poor. These struggles of other people-- it hurts me to see. Living shouldn’t be so difficult but for so many people in this world, simply surviving is a struggle. It’s these movies that make me want to give back. To recognize my privilege and to ultimately connect with other humans around the world. Asian people--they live a simple life but their hearts are huge. I love the people there. I want to go back. I want to connect again with these people.   

In the back of my mind while this move was playing I was thinking how this is contrast to the American law where we are forced not to have adoptions. But the narrator said something very important. Even though these policies opposite externally, they are essentially the same thing-- which is that the women do not have a CHOICE as to what happens to that baby inside their beautiful life giving body.
