Repost from @kriolamommyscholar using @RepostRegramApp - 💖👩🏽‍🏫🌍 During the screening of #WomenLikeUs at #JCSU for #InternationalWomensMonth I offered my thoughts on distinguishing between economic and mental poverty. Some of us often see economic poverty and automatically start feeling bad for “those” people in those “poor” countries. We must understand that just because people don’t have all the economic resources doesn’t mean that they lack happiness or a moral compass. #TheDangerOfASingleStory #AfricaIsNotACountry #poverty #developingworld #changethenarrative #happiness #stereotypes #shareyourstory #reality #storiesmatter #africa #africanscholars #blackwomenphds #mommyscholar #fbf #educatedblackwomen #thinkcritically

We Need Diverse Books.org
We recently placed an image on our front page that will lead you to WeNeedDiverseBooks.org. IthacaLit believes children who are immersed in worlds they do not live in will be happy, well balanced children. These children will grow into adults who connect with others in a meaningful way. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie says it best in her TedTalk The Danger of a Single Story. The strength of our humanity is in our ability to connect as a community. When I’ve encountered racism in it’s most “subtle” form, it’s usually a complete lack of exposure to folks different from the person making the grave error of discounting a whole group of people based upon a single encounter or no encounter at all.
It is summer in the year 2017, and many of us are looking for a respite from world events. Just a day, a week, a month without the adversity our diversity creates. A moment to sing together, a day to celebrate our goodness, a month filled with the music of our diverse beliefs, the kind gesture, the trill of laughter, whether our melanin levels, gender roles, or politics match or not, whether our gods are on speaking terms or not. You know the moments. They're the music that makes poetry.
The clash of symbols has its place in this orchestra as much as the harmonies underlying the melody of our shared experience. IthacaLit brings voice to the music of living, and, in those voices, we find hope. We encourage you to find that respite at IthacaLit, connect with IthacaLit's poetry and art. Take a look at the Art page as our collection grows. It is with great joy that we design these pages to share with you, the musicians who are this world's symphony. Please visit We Need Diverse Books  and guide the children in your world to visit the stories that add to our symphony.
Enjoy this summer's bounty, [email protected]

#SatiationSaturday #TheDangerOfASingleStory #AfricansOwningOurOwnNarrative Ironically Africans seem to be measured at home and abroad by our achievements in the West to our own detriment in erasing our own historical greatness. The great writer of our generation, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie spoke of the danger of a single story in saying "Show a people as 1 thing, as only 1 thing over & over again & that is what they become. Power is the ability not just to tell the story of another person, but to make it the definitive story. Stories have been used to dispossess & to malign, but stories can also be used to empower & to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity" - "Before Beyoncé used a snippet of a TED Talk from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for her hot song '***Flawless' in 2013, Adichie was an acclaimed author. She'd already published 'Half of a Yellow Sun' and 'Americanah', which won the National Book Critics' Circle Award. But, somehow, her accomplishments are always linked to the popstar. 'In the first place: of course Beyoncé asked my permission to use my texts, and I did give her permission. I think she's lovely and I am convinced that she had nothing but the best intentions. In addition, Beyoncé is a celebrity of the first order and with this song she has reached many people who would otherwise probably never have heard the word feminism, let alone gone out and buy my essay... But, I was shocked about how many requests for an interview I received when that song was released. Literally every major newspaper in the world wanted to speak with me about Beyoncé. I felt such a resentment(laughs loudly), I thought: are books really that unimportant to you? Another thing I hate was that I read everywhere: now people finally know her, thanks to Beyoncé, or: she must be grateful. I found that disappointing. I thought: I am a writer and I have been for some time and I refuse to perform in this charade that is now apparently expected of me: Thanks Beyoncé, my life will never be the same again. That's why I didn't speak about it much."

Cultural Knowledge
We watched a Ted Talk video today, and saw how much difference it can make to be aware of other cultures, as well as your own. This means don’t just look at the stereotypes and generalizations. Ms. Chimamanda explains it better in her video linked below.

Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.
"the single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes in not that they are untrue, but they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story."

My Professor shared this with us in class on Friday. I was so moved and inspired by this story that it got me thinking about how I too, have been guilty of having single stories about certain places and people.
I also got to thinking about how much I could relate to Adichie’s own experiences on how people view her county. I feel I can relate because I have had tons of conversations and experiences in which people only had single stories about Mexico and it’s people. It’s shame that so many individuals have these predetermined ideas of this country, which does have its problems, but then again what country doesn’t. What one hears about or reads about is only a single story it does not reflect an entire country. These single stories will never fully express the beauty, warmth and spirit of Mexico and it’s people.
