Beretta M9A4…Spicy Italian
Tumblr media
Having served in the U.S. Navy for almost 9 and a half years as well as on the ship’s security force, I was fortunate enough to get a chance to handle a number of small arms. We still had the 1911 pistols when I first arrived onboard, but then switched over to the Beretta M9. The Navy is always behind the front line services like the army and Marine Corps when it comes to small arms, so there we were in the mid 90’s still using an 80 year old pistol. They were beat up and loose from many years of service and rebuilds, so the change over to the new Beretta was a breath of fresh air. For a couple of decades I wanted to get a Beretta M9 for my personal collection, but never did so. Then Beretta came out with their modernized M9, the M9A3 which was supposed to compete in the new military handgun trials to replace the outgoing original M9. Unfortunately, that contest was lost to Sig Sauer and their P320 M17/M18.
Tumblr media
Fast forward a few years after that defeat, I still longed for a Beretta M9 pistol. I was close to picking up the M9A3, but then the M9A4 came out. This was very similar to the M9A3 with it’s slender grip that had grip panels for those with larger hands, a threaded barrel and that oh so nice looking coyote or FDE finish. The biggest difference between the Beretta M9A3 and the M9A4 was the addition of an optic plate setup on the new M9A4. I knew at this point that the one that I wanted was the M9A4 variant. Both of these newer Beretta models look so spicy between their awesome desert inspired finish and the ammo box type of case they come in as well as coming with a total of 3 magazines. Many will point to these pistols as an outdated design overall, but with some more modern changes, but until you handle and shoot one, you won’t know what you’re missing.
Tumblr media
When I picked up my new Beretta M9A4 pistol I decided upon an RS-10 red dot for the optic but I might switch it over to an RMR at some point down the road. The RS-10 works perfectly fine on the M9A4. The one thing about the Beretta is that the optic does sit rather high, so co-witness of the iron sights isn’t possible. The other change I made to my M9A4 was a trigger kit from Langdon Tactical. They make a customized trigger kit in a bag with your preferred weight and hammer style. The Beretta isn’t terribly difficult to work on with the right tools, but it isn’t a Glock that’s for sure.
Tumblr media
The Beretta M9A4 is an absolute pleasure to shoot whether suppressed or unsuppressed. I will run my Rugged Suppressors Obsidian 9 on the M9A4 from time to time, but mostly I shoot it unsuppressed. The trigger is super smooth in both single and double action. These and other Beretta pistols come in and out of stock over at Brownells from time to time. If you’re in the market for a modernized classic like these Beretta M9A4 pistols, definitely keep an eye out and sign up for in stock notifications. The 92X is also strikingly similar in features without the tan finish.

F7: Assess population needs, asset and capacities that affect community’s health
When working with rural communities it is important to focus not only on what resources they lack, but also what assets they already have. When it comes to food insecurity, members of rural communities are at high risk due to many factors including decreased food access, decreased food literacy and low overall socioeconomic status. When working with FDE for the data collection portion of our practicum project, we were encouraged from the very beginning to seek help from Feast Down East’s extensive list of community partners that were already invested in decreasing food insecurity in Pender county. We utilized community based participatory research to gain a firsthand understanding of the food needs of Pender county. Many community partners agreed to assist our project in distributing the needs assessment, so it was important to our group that we included their feedback in the need assessment we created.
In order to gain an understanding of what food resources were already in place in Pender County, from week one our practicum group did research on existing food resources in Pender county for the general public and specialized communities such as children or seniors. Feast Down East had an extensive list of community partners already, and this was a huge help in distributing both the initial community partner needs assessment, as well as the larger community food needs assessment. We distributed a 10 question survey to community partners in order to gain knowledge of the services they provide in the community, what information they would be looking to gain for a needs assessment, as well as what events they had planned and if they would be willing to participate in a community event, should our practicum have the ability to host them.
This data collection was such an eye-opening experience for me. Getting to read first-hand accounts of food insecurity and what that reality looks like for rural Pender County residents is a truly humbling experience. I learned that so many survey participants need more money to meet the food needs of their family. I also learned a lot about how natural disasters are especially detrimental to South Eastern North Carolina. It was suggested by multiple organizations that we should include questions about how hurricanes affect their food supply, and I am so glad we did. I was saddened by the many responses of people who went without power for weeks, or who lost their homes due to a recent hurricane. Through our trip through Pender County, Jordyn explained to us that hurricanes are especially detrimental to Pender because of how flat the land, which is why agricultural industries are so harshly affected there. I also learned what a food desert can look like not only in distance, but also in the types of foods that are available in stores. Many survey participants noted that they wish they had an increased access to fruits and vegetables. This survey was yet another example of how the areas where fresh food is grown do not have access to the fruits and vegetables they produce.
Our group definitely learned a lot about the “behind the scenes” work that goes into data collection. While we were pleased with the amount of responses we received with both surveys, we definitely wish we could have received more feedback from the general community and the community partners as well. We also found that time constraints can look different in the real world- and keeping in mind that many of these food pantries and smaller organizations may only be open one day per week, and distributing a food needs assessment during that time would not be the greatest use of their time. During these times of COVID-19 it is also much more difficult to hand things out in person, and meet community partners face-to-face. I definitely feel that there was a disconnect between community partners and our group, for no other reason that we unfortunately were never able to put a name to a face, and vice-versa. This being said, I learned so much about Pender County and rural communities through this data collection. It is especially important in rural communities to use the infrastructure already in place. So many organizations such as Pender County Christian Services and 4-H were doing such great things for this community already, and Feast Down East Continues to connect these groups and fill in gaps where they are needed.

An Introduction to Inteliel
Tumblr media
Inteliel is an archipelago closed off on all sides by what is known as the Intelican Veil. For centuries, it had been thought that Inteliel comprised the entire planet--however, recent discoveries revealed that Inteliel is but a small section of a larger world, the rest of which is frozen in time supposedly due to Himina’s Great Freeze.
Inteliel is ruled by the Cloudheartian Empire, the Farowlian Empire, and the Republic of Calderby. The Kingdom of Heronrose exists in a dimensional pocket accessible only through a massive waterfall in northern Farowle. Despite this, Heronrose is still heavily involved with affairs in Inteliel, and vice versa.
Cloudheart
Cloudheart is composed of three islands: Lamitae, which houses the imperial capital; Makura, which is divided into the lush kingdom of Puredark to the north and the desert kingdom of Kain to the south; and Yamishima, a tiny island in the Umigaku Sea used as both an emergency safehouse and a confidential development center.
The empire is headed by Emperor Sakana Cloudheart, only the second to rule after his father, Emperor Risune, first established the country. Other members of the ruling class include:
The Most Reverend Bertrand Etienne Davet Levesque, Angura’s Blessed One, Bishop of Cloudheart, and Lord of Lamitae
Prince Rusano Cloudheart
King Ikebau Aizuma of Puredark
Queen Hypatia Idoneus of Kain
Cloudheart doesn’t have much of a reputation on its own yet, as it is still a very young state. However, its provinces do have very distinct and notable functions: Puredark is known for its prevalent trade, and Kain is known for its wealth of knowledge. Kain in particular is quite famous throughout Inteliel, as after it had been acquired by Cloudheart and dissolved its isolation policy, it began to plant research facilities--branches of the Kain Institute--worldwide.
Farowle
The empire of Farowle is one large, amusingly F-shaped island divided into several city-states by a wide river known as The Scythe. Each city-state is ruled not by a single person but by a bureaucratic department of the empire. As such, each city-state works to serve a single purpose.
The departments are:
The Farowle Department of Imperial Administration (FDIA)
The Farowle Department of Economics (FDE)
The Farowle Department of Correspondences (FDC)
The Farowle Department of Upkeep (FDU)
The Farowle Department of the Military (FDM)
The Farowle Department of History (FDH)
All departments report to the Empress of Farowle, whom most believe to be Demena, the goddess of Black Magic. She, her three children (Crown Prince Kenway, Princess Moire, and Prince Lysander), and her husband (due to the Oath of Anonymity, his identity is publicly unknown) all oversee one department each in addition to the FDIA. Because of this, it is often questioned whether the departments serve their function in balancing the power of the imperial family.
Farowle is quite a beautiful place, built around and focused on the water. The majority of its citizens live in comfort; however, minorities such as homosexuals, worshipers of Angura, and foreigners are often ostracized and harassed, making it a dangerous place for anyone not considered a “Child of Demena” or “ideal citizen”.
Calderby
The Republic of Calderby is perhaps the most technologically advanced society outside of Kain, in particular because most of it is a testing ground for Kain. Even when Kain’s isolation policy was in effect, Calderby’s proximity to the kingdom led to the expansion of quite a few developments.
The capital of Calderby is the city of Korokash, located on the northeastern coast. Ironically, Korokash is probably the least advanced city in the country, since it is connected to most of the rest of the world. The most advanced city used to be a smaller town by the name of Eledir, but it has since been mostly abandoned for the larger and more secure Kain Institute facility to the south after a security breach led to a major conflict with Farowle.
While Calderby is a democracy, some towns are ruled by influential families usually linked to the pirates that patrol the Calderbian Sea. The town of Selahal, in fact, is ruled by the most prominent pirate clan, the Halcyons, though it is Skatthamn (or “Calderby’s Treasure Coast”) that truly holds a piratical reputation.
Another interesting thing to note about Calderby is its relationship with the other powers of Inteliel. Calderby is on friendly terms with both Cloudheart and Farowle; with Cloudheart because of its long history with Kain, and with Farowle because of its long history of Demena worship. As such, when tensions between Cloudheart and Farowle begin to intensify, Calderby tends to remain neutral (although that doesn’t stop either empire from attempting to gain Calderby’s favor).

The article, written by Justin Opinion, provides an overview of the Springfield Armory Echelon 4.0C, which is now available in Desert FDE (Flat Dark Earth) and Olive-Drab (OD) Green colors. The Echelon 4.0C is a compact version of the full-size 4.5F Echelon, designed for concealed carry and personal protection without compromising features. It includes a polymer grip frame, Cerakote-finished slides, the Central Operating Group, and a Variable Interface System for optics without an adapter plate. The article discusses the practicality and aesthetic appeal of the two new colors, noting that they offer utility in blending with various environments, particularly in different military contexts. The compact size of the Echelon 4.0C makes it a popular choice for personal protection while retaining the same features as the full-size model. Additionally, its compatibility with optics and exceptional ergonomic design add to its appeal. The article suggests that Springfield's introduction of these color options signals its commitment to the Echelon series and its users.

The New Black? FDE or ODG?
Let’s face it… a black AR-15, although a timeless color for Stoner’s rifle or America’s rifle is a bit of yesterday. Most any place you look, you’re going to see AR-15 rifles as well as other AR style rifles in many different colors. Personally, I’ll take them however I can get them BUT if I had a preference, which color would I choose if given the choice?
Tumblr media
Prior to our military spending a bunch of time fighting conflicts in the desert parts of the world, such as Iraq and Afghanistan, we focused mostly on the greener parts of the planet….forests and jungles. OD Green or ODG as it’s commonly called fits that role perfectly. We’ve always tried to color or camo our rifles to our surroundings in military conflicts. During the Vietnam war, ODG uniforms and tiger striped uniforms were the norm and America’s newest rifle was just coming on the scene. I can’t remember any tan or desert toned rifles back in the 1980’s, but rather greens were common. Once we got into the 90’s and had some conflicts over in desert areas, did you start to see the M16 and M4 variants start to get tan colors painted on them. These desert tones have seemed to have stuck around!
Tumblr media
I’ve done a number of camouflage finishes on some of my personal firearms using tan and green colors using Brownells Aluma-Hyde firearm finishes. Aluma Hyde is an easy way for the home user to achieve a Cerekote like finish, but without having to purchase a bunch of special equipment. Brownells offers various shades of tans and earth tones, but only one shade of green and that’s OD Green of course.c
Tumblr media
Today when looking to purchase an AR type firearm or part/accessory…most every manufacturer makes said part or firearm in both FDE and ODG. Take Geissele for example. You can get their version of FDE called DDC(Desert Dirt Color) or OD Green. They even have a Bazooka green. Aero Precision also has similar color choices with their parts and rifles. FDE and Black are the main colors they offer, with their monthly builder sets in some sort of a camouflage finish and the occasional OD Green. Weapons light manufacturers and even optics manufacturers have even gotten into the game. Eotech makes their popular holographic optics in multiple colors and Modlite, a well know weapon light manufacturer also makes their lights in multiple colors. Typically, colors other than black will sell out the quickest.
Tumblr media
So which do I prefer, OD Green or FDE? Which one of these IS the new black? I think that each of them have their following. Some people just have to have that OD Green…they seek out everything they can find in that color while others navigate towards FDE and variations of. Truly it seems to me that either of these have the attention and can be considered the new black, but FDE seems to be the more prevalent out in the open market. Since I have firearms in both of these shades, there is no clear winner in my collection, BUT I have been spotted with more and more FDE as of late.
