Sega Saturn - Langrisser Dramatic Edition
Title: Langrisser Dramatic Edition / ラングリッサー ドラマティックエディション
Developer/Publisher: NCS Masaya
Release date: 26 February 1998
Catalogue No.: T-2507G
Genre: Tactical RPG / Strategy
Langrisser is one of many game series nobody ever talks about these days but is still highly regarded as a cult classic among us. If you like Fire Emblem for GBA, you'll likely love this disc, especially if you love a challenge. This disc contains remakes of the first two Langrisser games. The first is Langrisser 1 which was originally on the Mega Drive, and also saw an American release by American Treco under the name 'Warsong'. Langrisser 1 also saw a release on the PC Engine Super CD. The second is Der Langrisser which is basically a Super Famicom update of Langrisser 2 which again originally was on the Mega Drive, and saw a CD-based port on the NEC PC-FX as 'Der Langrisser FX'. Instead of rambling about the two games I'll just cover the differences.
D.E. Langrisser vs. Langrisser 1
The graphics are now taken from Der Langrisser. Characters are larger and more detailed.
The soundtrack is completely different, and voice acting has been added to various story sequences.
The dialog has been modified, making the simple plot of the previous game a bit more complex.
Anime cutscenes are spread throughout the game.
All the rebalances and battle engine modifications that were done with Der Langrisser also apply.
In comparison with the original Langrisser, permanent character death is absent.
D.E. Der Langrisser vs. Langrisser 2
Most of the features in Der Langrisser are carried over from the PC-FX version:
Nearly everything from the previous comparison applies, except the permadeath (which wasn't in Langrisser II, to begin with) and the musical score (a few tracks are different, but most are familiar.)
The plot was rewritten to be far more open-ended. The protagonist now has the option to switch his allegiance at various points in the game, each switch having drastic consequences and changes in the playable character roster that follow through to the end. Battle maps, character appearances, and important story events have been revamped and shuffled to accommodate this.
Langrisser Dramatic Edition comes with a little bonus mini audio CD, titled Langrisser Gaiden "Kalxath Hishi" (ラングリッサー外伝 「カルザス秘史」).

Bard and adventures – lost music instrument and onion (bow)
Pixel art for today based on videogame Der Langrisser for game console Super Nintendo. It is rather colorful game. Genre of RPG. I heard that it is a tactics. Mainly, personally me, I only heard about this game. But for myself, I have never played it. It looks so colorful and bright! As a lots of other Super Nintendo games! Bright colors 16 bit age!
And this is my drawing about the same theme. When it is summer – it is good! And the place where is summer – there is you there! You are living in forests. And you are a singer, bard. Adventurer. In a land of forests and plains. In a search of dragons and dungeons. You have left one more city behind. And you go by the road. Excellent day. And nice birds are singing. You can sing with them. But you have lost your music instrument. You have lost it someplace in local dungeons. When you awake after the free time, sleep, - there were no music instrument near you. It is hard to say where do you lost it.
So, in search of music instruments, you are going on! And in other case, you are ready to go to a shoreline, coast, to find a glorious dragons. And you dream for a long time to see who are these big flying eyes demons. It is beholders, they have a name. And yes, why everyone has a fear, when you say beholder. Just think about it. You are rather good with a bow. And you grow onion near your house, also good.
And, also, people speaks, that at the coast, there is a big city, big big. City of all the cities. Interesting to look at it. And how interesting it can be to see other creatures, that you read about in a books. There are daedras, fairies, trolls, skeletons. You have never seen someone like that! But it was interesting to read about. Nice to see them all!
So, it is good, not to forget to check onion. And to search a music instrument. The city you left, you go to this city every week to sell there at the square – onion and mushrooms. Also you pick mushrooms from a forest. It is also interesting things. And you have a permission to go to a castle tower to read amazing stories there!

Langrisser I & II (PS4/NSW)
Langrisser was one of the standout SRPGs of the 16-bit era, a combination of epic tactical battles, outstanding music, and colorful character designs by Satoshi Urushihara. While it stuck around during the 32-bit era, it never quite had the same popularity, and eventually the team transitioned to the Growlanser series, then later worked on the DS/3DS Devil Survivor titles. Nevertheless, the current license holder, Extreme, tried desperately to keep the series alive – it was resurrected for an awful 3DS game, Langrisser Re:Incarnation Tensei in 2015, likely due to the resurgence of Nintendo’s similar Fire Emblem series. While that was a flop, it hasn’t stopped the publisher from trying, first with a smartphone mobile games released in 2018, and then finally a complete remake of the first two games, released in Japan in 2019. This was developed by City Connection, a company with a reputation for updating and re-releasing retro games, like Penguin Wars and Psyvariar. The first Langrisser was localized for the Genesis under the title Warsong, but none of the other core games were published outside of Japan. The sequel, Langrisser II (Mega Drive) and its upgraded version, Der Langrisser (Super Famicom), have been fan translated, but this is the first time it’s been officially localized.

I think you might like Der Langrisser. It has a knight named Leon who's incredibly devoted to his emperor. Highlights include picking the emperor over the girl who likes him and choosing to die with the emperor because he finds a life without him meaningless He even has a second in command with the same level of devotion towards him. Der is also one of the first SRPGs to have branching story paths including an Imperial path that has genuine moral complexity and consequences for your actions.
I’d never heard of it, but that does sound interesting.
#Looks pretty dated though and mostly Japan-only#And those are barriers to entry enough for a series I already know

About Me (Byuu)
Hi! I am a C++ programmer with over twenty years of experience. My programming philosophy is to focus on accuracy, simplicity, and performance; in that order. By accuracy, I refer to correctness, stability, and the absence of bugs. By simplicity, I refer to code size, consistency and readability. By performance, I refer to using statically-typed, compiled languages, and appropriate algorithms that scale well. I reprogram software for English-speaking audiences. My most notable completed projects are Dragon Quest V and Der Langrisser for the Super Famicom. I work to preserve digital media, so that it might be available for future generations. I have collected, scanned, and imaged every Super Nintendo game released in North America. I am currently working on the European Super Nintendo and Japanese Super Famicom collections. I am the author of the bsnes and higan video game console emulators. Some things I am known for ... The NEC uPD7725 chip emulator from higan was successfully used to help emulate the text-to-speech computer system used by the late Professor Stephen Hawking. My library libco is used to provide cooperative threading support for the Fluent Bit log processor and forwarding system. An enhancement API that adds full-motion video and CD-quality audio to the Super Nintendo. Now supported in dozens of games through the use of patches, MSU1 gives us an idealized glimpse of what could have been if the ill-fated Nintendo-Sony partnership had been fruitful in producing a commercial CD-ROM add-on unit for the SNES hardware. ... [https://byuu.net/about] Hi, I'm byuu. I am a computer programmer with 20 years of experience, and I have been employed as a software engineer for the past 13 years. My primary focus is on systems programming. I am most well-known for my work as the sole developer and project lead of the bsnes and higan emulators, which I have worked on for the past 15 years. I have written complete (if not perfect) emulators for 24 unique hardware devices spanning 12 very different architectures during this time. I have also spent the past 8 years working to preserve the complete international library of games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or Super Famicom in Japan. A project that to date has set me back by more than $30,000 US dollars. I learned my trade through reprogramming Japanese games that were never released outside of Japan. I have contributed to the English fan translations of Dragon Quest V, Der Langrisser, and Mother 3, to name a few. I have worked on many other projects over the years. Most famously, I contributed my emulation of the relatively obscure NEC uPD7720 processor to an effort that successfully preserved the voice machine used by the late professor Stephen Hawking. Throughout my life, video games have always been a passion of mine. While none of us can live forever, I aspire to at least preserve this slice of my youth for future generations through my efforts. And it is in that same spirit that I've created byuu.net, with the aim of helping other emulator developers, both veteran and aspiring, to further this cause. Working as a developer in emulation has proved a constant challenge that has helped me grow both professionally and as a person, and I feel privileged to be able to be a small part of this scene. I hope you'll find the content here useful and engaging. Thank you for reading!

(1995) Der Langrisser
an enhanced version of Langrisser II.
unsurprisingly, my favorite song from the Genesis version (Imelda) is much weaker with samples.
still, this is mostly orchestral, so there’s a net benefit from using samples.

. . .
Way wayyy back in May 1996, VIZ Media ran a short 7-issue Publication Magazine called "Game On! USA" calling themselves the 'Magazine of Electronic Manga Gaming'.
Like Animerica, NewType, and other Anime-based magazines of the time, Game On focused primarily on the Japanese Game Industry.
I was visiting an old antique Comic book shop today, and came across Issue 3 of this Magazine in exceptional condition. I bought it for a Dollar.
In it, is a MASSIVE set of Interviews on SNK both in the states and in their old headquarters in Osaka and discusses SNK's history at the height of their popularity back in the day.
It even mentions a funky Art of Fighting gimmick where characters are actually 'Stronger' on their Birthdays! Imagine if modern fighting games did stuff like that!?
Not only this, but there's even an Interview with Namco on the history of Tekken and Tekken 2, and mentions a button code that let you play Tekken in First Person! I wonder how many 3D fighting games did that?
The Magazine features Manga adapted shorts of Super Street Fighter II: Cammy and Samurai Showdown, as well as a one-shot retro ad of Battle Arena Toshinden!
To top it ALL off they discuss several 'upcoming games' that MIGHT get imported: A Samurai Showdown RPG, Shin Ou Ken, Tobal No.1, Zero Divide 2, Albert Odyssey Gaiden, Arc the Lad II, Enemy Zero, Over Blood, Der Langrisser 3, Dragon Force, Sengoku Blade, Lunar Silver Star Story, Speed Racer Mach GoGoGo, Fist of the North Star, Tenchi Muyo No Need for School, Funky Gatsuman (a Ninja game still in development at the time), and Ultraman Battle.
Oh, but, there is one more game in that list that they mentioned in passing... the blurb they wrote on it was short but quick to compare the game to SNK Titles the likes of which they focused on in the very Magazine! They were pretty quick to compare it to Shin Ou Ken and Killer Instinct as well...
The blurb was so hastily made, they only managed to get a screenshot of the PROTOTYPE for Guilty Gear: The Missing Link back when it was still a Polygon 3D build demo. They said to 'expect it this fall' (October 1998).
Talk about a Time Capsule! It's too bad such a unique Magazine was discontinued. A magazine specific to Anime Videogames would be interesting in this day and age!
Funniest bit of all: when the EDITOR of the Magazine says the PlayStation would only be marketed to an older audience less familiar with Videogames! Even saying Sony pushing Sega back in the market was a 'minor setback'. Hah!
