Just realized that most of you people don't know about "Der Erlkönig" and for some reason it's important to me that you know. It's a poem by Ghoete. And I just want people to experience it, because I really liked it as a kid.
Original German:
Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?
English Translation (by me):
who rides so late through night and wind? it is the father with his child; he has the boy save in his arm, he grips him tight, he keeps him warm. My son, why do you hide your face in fear? - See you father not the erlking? The Erlking with crown and cape? - My son it is a streak of fog. - "You lovely child, come, go with me! such wonderful games I'll play with you; many colourful flowers are on the beach, my mother has many a golden cloth." - My father, my father, and do you not hear, what Erlking quietly promises me? - be calm, stay calm, my child; in arid leaves there whispers the wind. - "Do you want, fine boy, to go with me? My daughters shall wait on you beautifully; my daughters lead the nightly ball and sway and dance and sing you in." my father, my father, and see you not there Erlkings daughters in the grim scene? - my son, my son, I see it exactly: the old willows gleam so grey. - "I love you, your beautiful shape rouses me and if you're not willing, then I will use force." - my father, my father, now he touches me! Erlking has done to me harm - the fathers is dreading; he rides swiftly, he holds in his arms the groaning child, reaches the farm with great difficulty; in his arms the child was dead.
I purposefully translated it very literally. If you want a more poetic translation they're out there too.
So, if you're confused now as to what this poem is actually about, I'll explain it to you like my high school german teacher explained it to me.
The father is trying to save his sick child by bringing it to a doctor. The child has a fever and is basically sorta hallucinating/seeing death represented by the Erlking, who is trying to lure the child with all sorts of sweet things, but then in the end just violently takes him.
I honestly don't know why this poem had such an impact on me as a kid, but it really did. Probably has something to do with the last line being a punch in the face (in a good way).

thanks to my high school music teacher I get to be haunted by “Erlkönig” every few months into adulthood and think a lot about what was going on with teenage Franz Schubert putting music to that. anyway the murder ballad ballot has me thinking about THE murder ballad. in which the elf king comes for the little boy who’s just trying to get back to the farm with his dad late at night. fucked up.
