Thursday 9th Nov.
8 - 10.30pm
Quasar
A---Z at Iklectik
Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/o0856a0ca324
A—Z comes back to Iklectik to present Quasar – Expect a night of live sets including immersive ambient sounds, from mystic, dark noise to electronic pulsar chaos. The event presents three acts that explore sensory/textural sounds, syncretism, displacement, cathartic tremors.
8.30 - 9pm Gisou Golshani (live)
9.15 - 9.45pm GAKKO (live)
10 - 10.30pm Manuka Honey (live)
Manuka Honey
Marissa Malik, best known by her stage name Manuka Honey, is a multi-disciplinary artist, DJ and producer at the forefront of Latinx-infused club music coming out of the UK. US-born and London-based, Manuka’s adoration of the Latinx diaspora’s sounds is exuded by her beautifully chaotic DJ sets that have pummeled the sound systems of clubs and festivals internationally.
GAKKO
Carolin Schnurrer is a London and Berlin-based artist, DJ (alias GAKKO), designer, and instrument builder, producing sensory experiences with a variety of media, from sound performance and installation art to moving images. In her artistic research, she creates electronic instruments that incorporate human skin into her music-making process: Providing a platform for the audience to actively shape and manipulate the sounds she produces in real time by engaging in tactile interactions with one another on a transformative odyssey through synthetic, sensual, and otherworldly sonic landscapes.
Delving into the depths of profound vulnerability and resilience, this approach allows her not only to investigate the potential of healing through the powers of human touch and sound, but also challenge traditional notions of music creation and club experiences – inviting listeners to embrace the symbiotic fusions between the organic and the synthetic, to forge a path towards a speculative and fictional future where these connections transcend the confines of borders, culture, language, and other categories of exclusion that we construct.
Operating under the name GAKKO, she has cultivated an unwavering passion for seamlessly blending genres spanning from 130 to 160 BPM, weaving together sets that pulsate with the raw energy of bass-heavy music, unexpected club edits, and thunderous drum breaks. Through radio shows on Foundation FM, Refuge Worldwide, and [sic]nal, she aims to showcase forward-thinking and marginalized electronic producers within the experimental and DIY realm. Carolin Schnurrer’s artistic journey is characterized by collaborative ventures with musicians, artists, writers, and dancers like KLEIN, AUDINT (Kode9, Eleni Ikon, Toby Heyes), Julie Cunningham, and Haroon Mirza; she has performed at events such as Tate Lates, Oram Awards at Kings Place, Hyperdub’s Night Ø at Corsica Studios, intonal in Malmö, the YARD theater, 925 in Colombo and the MIRA Festival in Barcelona.
Gisou Golshani
Gisou Golshani is a London-based Iranian artist. Their work depicts abstract narratives from seemingly disparate elements. Through multilayered editing and playful uses of sampling, they investigate the intimacy of the voice, the effects of sound on the body and their mother tongue Farsi’s complexities in translation. Looking into archival found material, Gisou creates multi-sensory, immersive installations and performances. Previous work has been shown at Disturbance (Ugly Duck), London, Studio/Chapple for Deptford X, London, Nottingham’s New Art Exchange, Mimosa House, London and internationally including their home country.

Research: One In, One Out: Queering Space with Lucy Hayhoe
Tumblr media
(Lucy Hayhoe’s One in, One out Leeds Smallet Gay Bar, 2021, presented at Compass Festival)
What makes a space queer? Lucy Hayhoe is a live artist who’s installation based experiences and performances explore queering space. I discover Hayhoe’s work while researching Depford X’s 2019 events program, and I came across her piece Depford’s Smallest Gay Bar, 2019.
youtube
Hayhoe has since restaged this piece, now exhibiting in Leeds as Leed’s Smallest Gay Bar, 2020. This piece considers what it means for a place to be gay- while also refelcting on the transitory nature of queer spaces in the uk.
Dealing with simliar themes to Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hasting’s work, Hayho considers reflects on the loss of UK queer spaces. The UK has experienced a rapid loss to queer spaces in the last ten years. With 60% of London’s LGBTQI+ spaces estimated to have closed in the last decade, and huge losses in Manchester with venues such as KiKi’s closing in 2020, queer safe spaces which have served as a lifeline, a place to find and build community, and a place to feel free to many LGBTQI+ people, are being lost.
As people grapple with the reasons why these spaces are struggling to survive- Hayhoe considers what it is that makes these places uniquely queer.
“Are we queer in relation to other people, or can we be queer by ourselves and on our own?” These are questions i’ve been asking myself when thinking about my own work. I think queerness is something which stems from within- queer euphoria is something I feel with other people, but it is also something quite private and individual- something I find from within. In many ways I think Hayhoes space- giving people a space that exists for them to be alone and queer within proves this.

Hayhoe embraced a camp aesthetic within the work with Compass Fest describing it’s ‘glitz, glamour and dodgy disco lighting’, it welcomes visitors in through it’s tinsley tassels to a space only a little larger than a telephone box, allowing one at a time to get a drink, check their coat, and have a dance.
Hayhoe describes her work as allowing for a sense of queer potential; something that is critical in my own work.
“It’s the sense of potential, the break from the heteronormative gaze, a rejection of the domestic.”
She argues that this is what queer spaces provide queer people- a place where non-normative identities are given freedom from societal preasures, and given a space where they are placed at the centre. This is something I too have been trying to achieve within my work; centering queerness and queer people, giving us a space to feel seen and exist outside of the systems of oppression and pressures at work within society.
Another project of Hayhoe’s that I am drawn to is her Home Sweet Home collaboration with Abigail Conway. This piece is a spectator lead installation, driven from the desire for adult play.

The work is a durational, cardboard flat pack town, in which participants can buy plots, build and decorate a house, contributing to the community that is constructed there. The participants take ownership of their community, making plans, naming streets, organising elections etc. The piece culminates in a ‘street party’ before each member is allowed to take their house away; “and so carry with them a trace of the community that was, and their role within it.”
I think this is a really interesting and engaging project, the audience becoming the creators, and mediating on collective identity, community building, and individual contribution. Particularly as we shift digitally in our socialisation and community location, this artwork highlights the power in community through creative play.
I find Hayhoes work very inspiring in that way, her use of ambitious installation to provide that sense of freedom and play within her work. While allowing for engaging and playful interactions between the art and its audience, the work also reflects critically on what we are lacking in society and provides creative solutions to engage the audience in ways of reflecting on these gaps.

CV Victoria Kaldan
Victoria Kaldan (b. 1986) lives and works in Copenhagen (DK).
Victoria is an interdisciplinary artist working across performance, moving image, installation and sound. Her practice deals with the perceived ontological shift from “who am I” to “where am I” – the body as a field for dual experience of physical and virtual. Her work frequently adopts a lo-fi aesthetic, incorporating everyday objects and found materials alongside digital innovations. She foregrounds and subverts visual and aural strategies exploited in commercial environments in order to manipulate clichéd notions of how gender is performed.

Tumblr media
'Del' (THE PATCHWORK PIGGIE!) and I are doing a 9 MILE WALK together in just two weeks time, on Sunday 14TH May, to raise much needed Funds for an EXTRAORDINARY SMALL CHARITY by the name of "HEART 'n' SOUL"! If YOU would like to help by SPONSORING US then please click on this Link:~ http://www.justgiving.com/tilley-milburn , and give whatever you possibly can, EVERY PENNY WILL HELP US SMASH OUR £600 TARGET (we're almost there!)! I'll let my knowledgeable Swine Friend tell you more.......................... Me and my Owner ave been at “HEART 'n’ SOUL” quite some time, since 2010, I’ve been living wiver even longer, since 2004, it’s not been easy, I can tell you! I never new I’d end up in London, in Malta, Glasgow, Edinburgh, IT’s CRAZY REALLY! Now I think I’m so much betta than 'Peppa’ an 'Miss Piggy’, I mean, look at my Eyelashes and Patches, I sing much betta too! I used to ave a curly tail an then it went floppy an straight, wiv bells on thee end! EVERYONE LOVES ME! I MAKE PEOPLE FEEL GOOD! I’ve helped my Owner overcome so much! They’ve got nothin on me! 'Del' the Piggie’s gonna tell you a lil bout “Heart 'n’ Soul”, bout da “BIG 30”, wiv an EXTRA SPECIAL ARCHIVE FEATURING ME of course! First of all, if you’ve not heard of “Heart 'n’ Soul” den poor you, where’ve you been all this time, d'you know dat they’ve been goin for over 30 YEARS?!?! Honestly, it’s been DAT LONG! They don’t see what’s wrong in people, they don’t think it’s strange dat my Owner needs me an carries me around everywhere! I LOVE MY OWNER (although she drives me mad!) AN I LOVE THEM, THEY LOVE ME, THEY LOVE MY OWNER! THEY’VE GIVEN HER DA CONFIDENCE TO TRY NEW TINGS AN SOMETIMES I GET A DAY OFF AS SHE DOES NOT NEED ME QUITE SO MUCH! My Owner’s ASPERGERS is understood as an ACCESS NEED, nuttin more or less, it’s NEVER BEEN A BARRIER TO PERFORMING! SHE CAN GET EVER SO ANXIOUS, USUALLY, BUT WIV PERFORMING SHE’s DOING WHAT SHE LOVES, an what SHE’s BEST AT! FORGET TRUFFLING, PERFORMING IS MY FIRST LOVE TOO, END OF! Gettin back to “BIG 30”, we ave been planning, in an out of Meetings, Training, Interviewing (an we ave been Interviewed!), Recording, posing for Photographs on an old Red 'RT’ Bus in Purfleet, “PUFFING & WOOLING”, playing wiv Bubbles an Dancing wiv Maracas, so many things we’ve done since before Christmas ~ ALL FOR DA “BIG 30”! AND DA “ROYAL VARIETY” SHOW ~ YOU NEED TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT, TRUST ME I’M A PIG TELLER! "Right, that’s quite enough from you now 'Del’, THANK YOU FOR THAT er BRIEF INTRODUCTION, that’s not really told anyone anything! Ah Yes!” You see, the “BIG 30” incorporates, amongst other things, A "BIG 30 ARCHIVE” (“HEART 'n’ SOUL’s” VERY OWN!) which will not be too dissimilar to what I have been doing with my dear old 'NANNY HIPPO’ (I shall talk about this next time!), but on a very much larger scale. A Team of six Trained Interviewers (including 'Del’ & I!) have been making (mainly) Audio Recordings of over thirty individuals/groups (with/without Disabilities!) who have been involved with the Charity in some capacity, since it first began in 1986. From Artists to Volunteers and Trustees to Parent/Carers, EVERYONE’s EXPRESSED THEMSELVES IN THEIR OWN UNIQUE WAYS, sharing stories of annoying “Eastenders” Stars and Filming “ROAD TRIP”, to feeling safe and included at “DYOT” (an accessible place for 10-25yr olds to come and explore their creativity!). To say that this has been a fascinating, humbling and memorable experience is the understatement of the millennium, being on both sides we could really understand what it meant to be given THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A VOICE AND BE TRUE TO ONESELF! Coupled with STUNNING PROFESSIONAL PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHS, this Archive will eventually have a PERMANENT RESIDENCE AT THE 'LONDON METROPOLITAN ARCHIVES’, but not before parts of it have been displayed at 'GOLDSMITHS UNIVERSITY OF LONDON’, 'LEWISHAM LIBRARY’ and various places around DEPTFORD (including 'THE ALBANY’, where "Heart 'n’ Soul” are based!)! The “BIG 30 SUMMER TAKEOVER (FESTIVAL)” will kick-off with “THE SQUIDZ CLUB” (a vibrant and inclusive Club Night for young people aged 10-25yrs & their Parents/Carers!) on Friday 16TH June and close with the “HEART 'n’ SOUL DJ’s” spinning (& mixing!) their Tracks at the 'SOUTH BANK CENTRE’ on Sunday 6TH, 13TH & 20TH August!
