U.S. Businesses Brace for Potential Trump Tariffs, Opt for Diverse Strategies Amid Uncertainty

With President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs looming, U.S. businesses are strategizing ways to protect their operations from the potential economic ripple effects. Trump’s proposal includes a 10% tariff on all imports and a substantial 60% tariff on goods made in China, a significant trading partner for the U.S. There is also a suggested 25% levy on imports from Mexico. If enacted, these measures could elevate consumer prices and provoke retaliatory tariffs from affected countries, leading to a cascade of economic consequences. Economists warn that Trump’s tariff plan, which may be his most impactful economic policy, could drive inflation, disrupt U.S.-China trade, and revert import duty rates to levels not seen since the 1930s.
Businesses Respond by Front-Loading Inventories
Many U.S. businesses are taking proactive steps to mitigate risks. For example, M.A.D. Furniture Design, based in Hong Kong, is accelerating shipments of its Chinese-manufactured furniture to a warehouse in Minneapolis, anticipating a smoother transition if the tariffs come into effect. Similarly, Joe & Bella, an online clothing retailer based in Chicago, has significantly increased orders for popular Chinese-made items, such as shirts and pants, to ensure supplies last through the upcoming Chinese New Year when factory operations pause for several weeks. “We wanted our merchandise delivered before Chinese New Year to avoid potential delays and tariff impacts,” said co-founder Jimmy Zollo.
Front-loading, or preemptively increasing inventory, has been a common strategy among importers to avoid trump’s tariff costs. However, with the breadth of products that could be affected by Trump’s proposed tariffs, experts speculate that U.S. ports might become congested if many companies employ similar tactics. This strategy requires businesses to invest heavily in storage and logistics, a costly endeavor that some, particularly small businesses, may not be able to afford.
Smaller Businesses Weigh Options Amidst Uncertainty
While larger companies with sufficient resources might lean toward front-loading, some small business owners are adopting a cautious approach, prioritizing cash flow over large, preemptive stockpiling. Hilla Hascalovici, CEO of New York-based Periodally, a company that sells Chinese-made heating patches for menstrual relief, has decided against early orders, citing the high costs of storage and expedited shipping as deterrents. Similarly, Max Lemper-Tabatsky of Denver-based Oaktree Memorials, which imports cremation urns from Asia and Europe, has chosen a “wait-and-see” approach rather than committing significant capital based on potential trump’s tariffs that may not materialize.
Freight companies, too, are preparing for the potential changes. Alan Baer, president of OL USA, a freight handling company, anticipates a slowdown in shipments if the tariffs are enacted, potentially leading to reduced demand for his firm’s services. “Tariffs in shipping are challenging no matter the scenario,” Baer remarked, highlighting the potential for workforce reductions if tariffs lead to decreased import volumes.
In light of Trump’s tariff policies during his presidency from 2017 to 2021, many in the business community remain skeptical but cautious, acknowledging that campaign promises do not always result in implemented policies. However, with the possibility of substantial tariffs, U.S. businesses are adopting a mix of preemptive and conservative strategies to navigate the uncertainty ahead.

Vote, Baby. Vote.: Here’s How I Voted in the 2017 Denver Elections
Denver! Ballots are due by Tuesday, November 7th at 7pm. So far, voter turnout has been abysmal. Can we really allow a small percentage of our population to make the decisions as to how $937 million of our future money as a city is spent? I don't think so. We can do better!
Since many of you asked (and I'm so happy that you did!) what I think about the 2017 ballot, I wanted to share my reasoning for how/why I'm voting -- still, I encourage you to seek out sources for additional information so YOU can make the informed decisions that best represent your own views. Below my voting information, I’ve included some resources to guide you! ***I'm also not interested in debating:) This is how I voted and I encourage you to make your own decisions*** (p.s. I dunno if it needs to be said but these are MY views, not the views of any organization, group or business I may do work with or represent outside of social media, etc.) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE VOTE. These elections are important and will have an impact on your life in Denver for generations to come. We are always talking about what is happening to this city and you actually have a chance to do something about it!
On twitter? let me know you voted and I will retweet you! @cocodavies
HOW TO VOTE:
You should have gotten a ballot in the mail. After you fill it out, go to
the Secretary of State’s website to find out where the nearest ballot drop-off is located.
It's super easy! Just put your address into the box marked "Where do I vote or drop off my ballot?" and it will tell you where the closest location is.
Please drop your ballot ON OR BEFORE 7p.m. on Tuesday, November 7th!
Here goes, in order of how issues appear on the ballot:
Denver Public Schools Director At-Large:
Maybe you're like me and don't have kids in DPS. Maybe you have kids but they go to private schools. Neither of these things matter -- YOU NEED TO HAVE A SAY IN WHO LEADS DPS.
Why? DPS is one of the largest employers in the state. The health of our public schools is often a good indicator of the health of our neighborhoods. Also, hi. Children are the literal future. We need them to have equitable access to all of the tools, resources and experiences they need to become great humans.
My vote is for: Julie Bañuelos
I'll let Julie say why:
"During my 15+ years with DPS, I’ve worked mostly with communities of color with large constituents of immigrants, students and families of English Language Learners – groups to whom I am still tied and who are most impacted by passionate teachers that invest not just their time, but also their souls to these academic and personal relationships."
Enough said. I was sold. Julie’s career has been equity-focused and she’s been on the ground working with the populations she will be serving. We need more people like Julie in office.
(NOTE: If you have an open seat in your district for school board, please see A+ Colorado's breakdown of each candidate on their website! I have a link below.)
Ok, so- The GO Bond:
Here's the "nobody reads paragraphs just gimme the votes" version:
2A- No
2B- No
2C- No
2D- No
2E- Yes
2F- Yes
2G- No
2H- Yes
I-300- Yes
::::::::::::::::And here's the blowhard version of my votes:::::::::::::::::
GO Bond: some thoughts
This was tough. I am beyond disappointed that not a drop of money could have been set aside for affordable housing. That, and I was also inundated with materials from the city pushing me to vote yes on all measures; in fact, the city spent $2.4 MILLION on the campaign to push this through, a campaign that was unopposed, by the way, so they technically could have spent nothing. (I'm also including a link below to all of the donors who contributed to this campaign, because they will no doubt be donating to Hancock's re-election campaign, so get ready for that nightmare.)
My burning question with the GO Bond as a whole: With all of these "improvements" promised to be made with almost a billion of our future tax dollars, will we be subsidizing our own displacement? Will these improvements only accelerate gentrification? I don't have a crystal ball. I can't tell. But I am skeptical.
I also straight up do not trust the current administration or city council with $937 million. We have multiple multi-billion dollar "shiny object" projects in the works already- the I-70 environmentally racist nightmare, the National Western
None of these projects have the most vulnerable people they will be negatively impacting in mind. I am scared for my city and our people. Money is seemingly everywhere, but we are losing our foundational folks because they cannot afford the basic necessities anymore.
2A- Denver Transportation & Mobility System Bonds - No.
I have no doubt this will pass. It doesn't need my vote to pass. But the refusal to consider housing as a part of the $431 million transit alone is unbelievable to me. I also don't trust that these projects will necessarily be fulfilled and I worry that those neighborhoods that need basics like sidewalks and safe crossings may never see them. I love you, transit lobby, and know you mean well. I wish you the best. You’ll be fine.
2B- Denver Cultural Facilities Bonds - No.
I know, you're thinking, like, what? Bree, you love arts & culture! You're an advocate for artists and the institutions that make our arts scene great! I'm all for supporting any entity that creates opportunities for folks to see/participate/experience/make art. But guess what?
We already passed the SCFD tax - that tax FUNDS THESE INSTITUTIONS. The large organizations (think the Denver Zoo, the DMNS, Botanic Gardens, the DAM, DCPA) get their own dang tax. They also have large donor bases. They also have marketing departments and funding streams small non-profits on the ground doing the hard work do not.
Until our smaller organizations get the funding they deserve, these cultural behemoths can take care of themselves.
2C - Denver Health and Hospital Authority Bonds- No.
It comes down to a total lack of trust in the finds actually being spent on these things promised. Shout out to Candi CdeBaca for her research on this one. I've linked her own voter guide below. Please read her POV on all of these issues.
2D- Denver Public Safety System Bonds - No.
It sucks that they lump fire stations in with police stations because I would have voted yes on this otherwise. But- fuck the police. Fuck the police state. Dismantle the system. No money to support a racist, classist unjust "justice" system.
2E- Denver Library System Bonds - Yes.
The library takes better care of our people than our government does (just see how they are taking an empathetic approach to the opioid crisis and our folks experiencing homelessness.) Libraries are *thankfully* hotbeds of radical liberalism and I love everything they do for our world. Knowledge is power. Librarians save lives.
2F- Denver Parks & Recreation System Bonds - Yes.
This was a toughie, ONLY because this is one of those instances where I am concerned we will be subsidizing displacement. When we make improvements to long neglected areas of the city, they often become flags for land-owners to wave to attract gentrification.
If Westwood finally gets its long-deserved rec center, will the folks/families who live there now get to see it come to fruition in five years? My friends working in land trust operations and food access say yes, our people will get to stay. I trust they are right because they work directly with the people.
I do not want to see what happened to the Northside happen to the Westside.
2G- Denver Public Facilities System Bonds - No.
I again referred to Candi on this one. She says the allotment of money is too vague and that's enough for me. Again, a lack of trust in our current administration is having a huge impact on how I'm voting -- which is a bummer, because they have so many tools at their disposal to make this city a more equitable place for all. Money just isn't the only tool.
Beyond the Bond:
Referred Question 2H- Yes.
I can only assume (hope?) adding more board members to an entity of this size will bring more voices to the table.
I-300- The Green Roof Initiative- Yes.
This requires builders to put money into investing in our future. It is a step toward an actually greener city. It was opposed by our mayor, which is disheartening. I believe that he is ok with spending our money as a city, but when builders are asked to put more money toward a better Denver, he's not interested in asking for that. Who he stands with says a lot about who he cares about.
Also, this was a citizen-led campaign. This is how much people care about a healthy future for Denver. (A link to the Green Roof Initiative is below, if you want a detailed explanation of what, exactly, the initiative will do, if passed.)
Resources:
Please, take a few minutes to read about each ballot issue so you can feel confident in the choices you make for the city of Denver. I’ve compiled a list of places I found good information to help me make my choices: In Denver’s at-large school board race, a familiar face and two challengers who want change via Melanie Asmar at Chalkbeat A+ Colorado's 2017 Denver Public Schools – School Board Candidate Survey GO? Or No GO?: A 2017 Denver Election Guide by Candi CdeBaca via Project VOYCE Your Denver 2017 Election Guide: What you need to know about ballot measures and school board candidates - via Erica Meltzer at Denverite Denver 2017 election guide: A $937 million bond package and the Green Roof Initiative are on the ballot via Jon Murray at The Denver Post A line-by-line look at the Mayor's recommended investments (where the GO Bond money is supposed to go if it all passes) Green Roof Initiative's breakdown of their proposal Ballotpedia’s breakdown of each measure And if you’re interested, here’s the campaign finance report for the entities/companies/people donated (to an unopposed campaign) Denver, please. Please vote.

Alan Simpson Born: September 2, 1931, Denver, CO Physique: Average Build Height: 6′ 7″ (2.01 m)
Alan Kooi Simpson is an American politician and member of the Republican Party, who represented Wyoming in the United States Senate. After serving three terms in the Senate, Simpson declined to seek re-election in 1996. Since leaving office, Simpson has practiced law and taught at different universities. In 2010, President Barack Obama appointed him to co-chair the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which made several recommendations on ways to reduce the national debt.
I was infatuated with him back in the 90s, mainly for being the tallest Senator in the United States history at the time (6'7"), until being overtaken by 6'9" (206 cm) Luther Strange in 2017. Personally I think he was a handsome man and if he had wanted to experience man on man sex, I would have been more than willing to help make that possible for him. That's the type of guy I am.

Lula’s Back
He went from being the “world’s most popular politician” to jail. Now he’s back to take on Brazil’s far-right president.
On Wednesday morning, two days after a Supreme Court justice annulled his criminal convictions and restored his political rights, Brazil’s former president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, returned to where his career began: the ABC metalworkers union headquarters. It was there, in greater São Paulo’s industrial belt in the late 1970s, that Lula led a series of general strikes demanding higher wages and the right to freely unionize in defiance of the military dictatorship that later imprisoned him. It was also in that stronghold that 40 years later, in 2018, a mass of Lula’s supporters surrounded the building and pushed against gates, trying in vain to prevent the founder of the democratic socialist Workers’ Party, who ruled Brazil from 2003 through 2010, from turning himself in to the police. “There’s no point in trying to end my ideas,” he told a mournful crowd before surrendering. “They’re lingering in the air and you can’t arrest them.”
The unexpected decision by Justice Edson Fachin, which cleared the path for Lula to make a comeback and potentially challenge a weakened President Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 election, instantly sent the country into a frenzy. In his ruling, Fachin found that the court in the southern city of Curitiba that convicted Lula in 2017 lacked jurisdiction to judge cases involving alleged corruption and money laundering as part of a now-disbanded corruption probe known as Operation Car Wash. The judge also ordered a retrial by a federal court in the country’s capital.
Lula, who ended his second term with an 87 percent approval rating and was once called “the most popular politician on earth” by Barack Obama, served 580 days in prison before his release under a November 2019 Supreme Court order determining that prison sentences should only be served after all chances of appeal were exhausted. Because of a law known as “Clean Slate” that prohibits candidates from running for office if they have criminal convictions upheld on appeal, he was disqualified from the 2018 race that elected Bolsonaro. The former president and his defense team’s claims that the convictions were politically motivated were bolstered after leaked conversations published by the Intercept raised questions about the integrity of former Judge Sérgio Moro—later appointed Bolsonaro’s minister of justice—and the anti-corruption crusade he led.
The dominant narrative of coverage in the past few days, both within Brazil and abroad, has been centered on the country’s potentially cataclysmic polarization. The mere possibility of Lula as a candidate—and a popular one at that—was enough to set off headlines highlighting investor woes, warning against a diversion from the public health crisis and the potential that his longtime nemesis’s return could further radicalize Bolsonaro (it’s hard to imagine how).
It felt like a reenactment of the 2018 election—when newspaper editorials and political pundits perpetuated a false equivalence between the Workers’ Party candidate, Lula’s former minister of education and former mayor of São Paulo Fernando Haddad, and Bolsonaro, a far-right demagogue who’s openly nostalgic about the dictatorship. Despite the ever-worsening tragedy engulfing Brazil, the self-serving economic elite and segments of the media insist on falsely painting Lula and Bolsonaro as two equally dreadful sides of the same coin. Brazilians, they either imply or inexcusably affirm, are stuck with an impossible choice: two forms of extremism.
“From a descriptive point of view, there is a polarization,” Rafael R. Ioris, associate professor of Latin American history at the University of Denver, told me, adding that one candidate stands for the rule of law and can restore normality, while the other is an anti-system authoritarian who militarizes politics and erodes institutions. “That does not mean that they are two equidistant poles, unless it’s in the sense of civilization versus barbarism.”

The Medusas - Part 6
Pairing : Mayans MC x Plus Size Reader
Warnings : Language
Word Count : 1.9k
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters, nor the universe where they were created and interact in. This series/fiction is only for entertainment purposes.
2014
“Motherfucker”, mumbled Tig under his breath. The Mayan in front of him, licked his lips, a smug smile on his face, reaching out for his prize. “Another one”, Tragger shook his head and looked at his poker opponent. “I already have all your cash, what else do you want to trade?”, stated Tranq with humor. The Son looked around and his eyes landed on Chucky. “Let’s put Chucky on the table”, he pointed at the man in question. The other Sons manifested their disagreement but Tig cut short to their chatting, “Shut up, I won’t lose this time. I can feel it”, he blew on his fingertips, his eyes trained on Tranq. “If you insist”, smirked the Mayan. The Son lost in the following minutes, getting pushed by his brothers because of his defeat. The crew patted Tranq’s shoulder in victory. “Chuckyy”, yelled the SOA’s President. “Yes Chibs”, replied the other. “I’m sorry but I’m afraid your time here with us is done. You’re with the Mayans now.” Chucky looked at the concerned before exclaiming “I accept that”. The Sons said their goodbyes to the man and saw him leave with the Mayans.
A few months later
Chucky heard the roaring of the motorcycles diminish the second they penetrated the yard. Walking out from his small office, he received at the clubhouse’s steps. He greeted Tranq and Taza before turning to Bishop and explaining him the tasks he did so far. “I also prepared my specialty for tonight’s dinner”, he happily stated. Bishop graced him with a smile and thanked him. He was making his way inside the clubhouse when Chucky interpellated him, “Oh and you received a postcard. I didn’t know you had a daughter.” Bishop quickly shared a look with Tranq and Taza, the three men approaching Chucky.
“What did you just say?”, asked Bishop not sure if he heard him correctly the first time. “There is a card from a Y/N Losa. Isn’t it your daughter, since it’s the same last name?” “Where?”, Bishop asked him, his hands grabbing Chucky’s arms. “I put it on the table next to the Templo’s entry”, his anxiety kicking in. As soon as he replied, Bishop sprinted the stairs up, making his way as soon as possible to the table. “Did I do something bad?”, mumbled Chucky under his breath, overwhelmed. Taza calmed him down, informing he did nothing and explained Chucky the importance of the card in question. “Keep an eye if there are more postcards and if so, call us immediately.” “I will”, replied Chucky, relieved.
Hey Dad
I hope I still can refer to you as such. I would understand if it wasn’t the case. I hope you and the others are alright. I just wanted to let you know that I’m ok. I’m finally figuring myself out.
I miss you deeply.
Love Y/N
Taza and Tranq stood by the entry, looking down at their freshly elected President, the postcard in his hands. Feeling their eyes on him, he stood up and made his way inside the Templo making sure to close the door behind them. A million different emotions crossed him like a typhon: sadness, anger, hope, relieve. You were alive and apparently alright. He cleaned his tears and took a deep breath before placing the card on his heart, “Of course, you will always be my little girl, querida.” Taking another look, he focused on the address where it was shipped from and exited the Templo. He got his brothers attention by pointing at the address. “Call the others. We’re going on a road trip.”
Memphis
Three days later, the Mayans were seen walking on the animated Beale Street. Bishop turned towards Taza, “Is everything arranged?” “Yeah the sorority knows we’re here. They invited us to stay at their clubhouse for a couple of nights”, he responded. “Good. Alvarez wasn’t joking when he said that the Medusa MC was everywhere”, declared the President. “Hey, I found it”, exclaimed Gilly and pointed at the Tattoo shop. They make their way inside and are greeted a minute later by the owner. “Hello, how can I help you?”, they asked. Bishop took the postcard out of his kutte and showed it to them. “Do you have any information regarding this card? The woman who send it?” They chuckled before nodding at their kutte. “The father I suppose. I figured, your jackets and all. Yeah, she was here a few days ago. She told me you would come.”
“Did she say where she would go next?”, inquired Taza. The owner shook his head and told them they had no idea. “She left something for you, though”, they said and gave him a note. Bishop immediately recognized your handwriting, giving him the confirmation, you were there. ‘Chose a design and get yourself a threat. It’s on me.’ “What’s this?”, he turned to the owner and tattoo artist. “Seems to me that she paid for your next tattoo”, they shrugged. “I’ll leave you a few minutes to choose what you’ll be having.” He sighed, his hands going on his head, unable to contain his frustration. “What are you gonna do?”, asked Coco. A minute later, Bishop stood up and declared, “I’m getting a fucking tattoo”, and joined the tattoo artist preparing the colors and machine behind the curtains.
2015 - 2016
Each time Chucky would call one of the Mayans and inform them about a new postcard of yours, Bishop decided to travel to the location indicated in the card. The second time they rode their bikes guided by you was to El Paso’s Municipal Rose Garden in Texas. Once there, they infiltrated a tourist guide tour, looking around for any clues. At the end of the tour, the guide walked towards the Mayans. “Did you enjoy the tour?”, he asked. “Sure”, smiled Taza. “I’m glad. Now you may pay for the actual visit”, the guide stated and pointed at them to the counter at the end of the way. Angel started to lit a cigarette when the guide’s hand took it from his lips, “No smoking in here!”. Angel’s looked at him surprised at his audacity to publicly correct him in front of his brothers. Bishop gave the Mayan a deadly glare before apologizing on his behalf to the guide. Once arrived at the counter, the men paid for their visit, the cashier’s eyes lingering on their kuttes. “Excuse me, I’ll be right back”, the employee told them. She came back with two garnished rose bouquets and made sure Bishop got the clue. Depositing the bouquets to the men’s arms, she smiled and added an envelope to the bouquets.
“We did all this way just for a bunch of flowers?”, commented Angel with irritation while Bishop went over the note left by you on inside the envelope. He shook his head, a small smile gracing his features. “Shut up”, Bish told Angel before passing him one of the bouquets. He frowned at his President’s motion and fixed his attention to the little card attached to the bouquet, ‘Marisol’, written on it. He opened the card and read the words marked on it, his breath getting stuck on his pipeline for a second.
‘Thank you for everything. You were the mother everyone deserves to have. Always in my heart, Y/N Losa.’
After cleaning his tears off, Angel and the others made their way back to Santo Padre. Bishop stopped at Martha’s and offered him the bouquet you left for her. The two ex-lovers spend the rest of the night catching on their respective lives while Angel stopped at his father’s, setting the other bouquet in a vase next to his mother’s urn. From that day, the Mayans noticed Bishop spending more and more time with Martha, the old flame slowly awake again.
Your third card came a year later, in 2016. The adventure led the Mayans to Denver this time, where they found out you offered them a visit at the Museo De Las Americas. At first hesitant, the crew became fond of these little trips, a way to not only hit the roads but also come closer as a group. It was that moment in the year where they could just let go and not focus on the shit going on back home.
2017
The fourth card came from Utah. This time, El Padrino decided to tag along. They ended up at the Outlaw Distillery, where they discovered the processes on how whiskey and other alcohols are produced. “This is what I’m talking about. This my jam”, declared Neron ‘Creeper’ when seeing where they landed, making the others laugh. There was a collective holler once the owner of the distillery offered each Mayan a bottle, saying it was paid for in advance. Bishop distanced himself from his man and followed the owner. “Excuse me but how could she pay for all of this?”, he asked him. The owner lifted his hands up in defense, stating that he didn’t know and didn’t ask. “I just accepted the payment.” Bishop nodded, “Was it the first time she came by?” He saw the uneasiness on the man’s features. “No, she’s been here some times.”
“Can I ask you for a favor?”, Bishop turned to the other who nodded. “Next time she comes here, could you give her this and tell her to come home?”, he said and furnished him a small velvet box. “I have a daughter myself. I can’t imagine what it is like to lose her. … If Y/N stops by I’ll let her know. You have my word”, stated the owner.
A week later
Cooper’s head lifts up from the papers in front of him once hearing the door’s bell ring. “Hey Coop”, you greet him at the counter, making him smile. “Hey Y/N, hey Ruby, how are you ladies?” “Not bad, not bad. You got our order?”, nodded Ruby. “Sure thing”, replied Cooper, the Outlaw Distillery’s owner, calling out for his employee. Ruby followed the employee while you waited for them at the counter, feeling Cooper’s gaze burning a hole on you. Your eyes locked with his, “How was, you know?”, you asked him. He took a deep breath before telling you how it went with your father. “By the way he left this for you”, he added to which your eyes widened. He set the box in front of you, seeing your face decompose, a hurricane of emotions crossing your features. You reached out to the box and opened it, revealing a gold necklace ornamented with an engraved coin, your father’s initials on it. You quickly cleaned the tear sliding on your face, trying to conceal your emotions. “He also told me to tell you to come back home”, commented Cooper. You nodded processing his words before looking up at him again. “Thanks Coop”, you simply replied. Ruby came back with the order, her attitude switching once seeing your glossy eyes. Her hand landed on her gun but you stopped her, your fingers reaching hers, shaking your head. “We have road to do”, you tell her and assure her that everything was alright.
You and Ruby stop at the gas station after a couple hours to stretch your body and get some coffee. That’s the moment where you tell and show her the necklace. “Are you going to see him?”, she inquired hesitantly. “Yeah…someday.” She hummed, reaching to her helmet. “Life is short. You could lose the ones you love any second. Don’t wait up too long. It’s hurting you as much as it must hurt him”, she affirmed. Your smile gracing your face turned into a chuckle before exclaiming, “So wise.” “Oh fuck you”, she joked. “That’s the plan”, you winked at her and saw her shake her head, laughing. You made your way to your next stop, Charming.

Political Engagement
What is politics?
What does politics mean by that? What is the first question on your mind when someone asks? Well, politics is defined as government policy, politicians, individuals and organizations who seek to reform how a country is governed.
What is political engagement?
Political behavior refers to people 's acts to share their views in politics. It is possible to hold elections, finance elections, give the candidate money, approach lawmakers or write a signing petition, marches, boycotts and alliances.
What happens when social media meets politics?
According to The Manifesto (2019), 80 per cent of any generation, including Generation Zers (aged 13-17), Millennials (aged 11-34 years), Generation Xers (aged 35-54 years) and baby boomers (aged 55 and older) use social media at least once a day, as social media is part of their daily lives.
Social media also played a major part in this evolution of the changing political landscape. Applicants on Facebook and Twitter and their certified groups actively express their views and opinions. Any party has its own pages on which it can propagate disinformation and call for donations and reports, the results of the survey and the rumours are shared without waiting for newspaper or television attention, as was the case in the pre-internet days. Vote polls are known to be an important part of the process. The Internet has raised the number of polls that we see every day. For example , Facebook polls are open to the public and the results of the polls are no longer only shared via social media sites. The findings of the polls have a tremendous impact, even though they are defective and are seen as a self-fulfilling prophecy. For eg, if voters were to believe that a low-voting candidate would be immoral to vote for them. The latest result of the vote would advise lawmakers to step their opponents forward as well. It also acts as a forum for civic interaction, as lawmakers can hold streams alive through an activity to connect directly with the candidates.
Urbain (2018) also looks at how social media can act as a campaign weapon to collect information from political enemies. The data collection programme Cambridge Analytica is used to gather data from users to sell to other political rivals. This is ethical behaviour, as the data obtained are intended to discredit other competitors in order to ensure that their efforts were successful.
Political officials often use social media for online communication for their thoughts and perspectives on subjects. Citizens ask questions, and lawmakers respond to the public's numerous queries. People use social media to support awareness-raising campaigns for global topics around the world. This creates reform for people from all parts of the world and people will register for demonstrations online and attend demonstrations whether they participate in any cause or if protests lead to changes for the population of a country (Jericho 2012).
Welcome to the Social Media War
After each of the shock election results of the past four years, pundits have pointed to social media strategy as a reason for the upset. Online political advertising has been said to have played a major part in David Cameron’s unexpected majority in 2015, Vote Leave’s Brexit surprise, Donald Trump’s triumph in 2016 and Jeremy Corbyn’s comeback in 2017.
Political parties clearly believe it will be a decisive factor this time, too, as they have all invested record amounts of human and financial resource to support their social media efforts.
Despite expert opinion and the willingness of parties to invest in social media advertising, there is a common perspective that questions the impact that Facebook advertising can have on changing the way significant numbers of people vote.
It’s a reasonable opinion and it isn’t an easy one to robustly rebut.
Yes, there are soft metrics for effectiveness that campaigns can point to; reach, engagements, shares and email sign-ups, to name a few.
But such is the pervasive nature of social media in today’s campaigns that the only way to categorically prove its effect on the end result would be to get one of the mainstream parties to agree to abstain from campaigning on social networks completely; a comparison of the polls at the beginning and end of the election would enable an understanding of the impact.
Such an experiment was conducted by social scientists in a local council election in the pre-digital era in order to prove the efficacy of the "ground war", which in the 1970s meant door knocks and leaflet drops.
Two researchers, David Denver and John Bochel, chose two identical tower blocks in Dundee. They were equidistant from the polling station in a safe Labour ward and Labour was the only local party that campaigned on the ground. Labour agreed with the researchers that it would only campaign in the "experimental" block and would refrain from campaigning in the "control" block, bar a single leaflet.
The results showed that turnout in the "experimental" tower block was 10% higher than in the "control" block; in addition, in the former, Labour’s share of the vote was 4% higher than in the latter.
At the 2017 general election, there were 97 seats that were won by 5% or less and 51 that were won with less than 2%.
Social media is now used heavily to help achieve the objectives of the "ground war". But the remit of social media advertising extends much further and so the likely effect it has on the overall result is almost certainly significantly higher.
A detailed look at the thousands of social media ads over the past month shows that online political advertising is now employed to help achieve all of a campaign’s political marketing objectives.

Steve Bannon Is Charged With Fraud in We Build the Wall Campaign
What would advise to Brian Kolfage, who lost both his legs and one of his arms during his service in Iraq, and created We Build the Wall as a GoFundMe page in December 2018, which was an immediate success, raising nearly $17 million in its first week online, but wanted to raise much more from donors: (1) Promise potential donors that he would not take a penny in salary or compensation and that all of the money he raised would be used “in the execution of our mission and purpose,” and then pay Kolfage $350,000 secretly from the donations for his personal expenses (and keep about $1 million for yourself too), or (2) find some other way to pay him? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s former adviser and an architect of his 2016 general election campaign, was charged on Thursday with defrauding donors to a private fund-raising effort called We Build the Wall, which was intended to bolster the president’s signature initiative along the Mexican border.
Mr. Bannon, working with a wounded Air Force veteran and a Florida venture capitalist, conspired to cheat hundreds of thousands of donors by falsely promising that their money had been set aside for new sections of wall, according to a federal indictment unsealed in Manhattan.
The fund-raising effort collected more than $25 million, and prosecutors said Mr. Bannon used nearly $1 million of it for personal expenses.
Despite the populist aura he tries to project, Mr. Bannon is known to enjoy the high life, and he was arrested at 7:15 a.m. on a $35 million, 150-foot yacht belonging to one of his business associates, the fugitive Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui, law enforcement officials said.
Working with the Coast Guard, special agents from the United States attorney’s office in Manhattan and federal postal inspectors boarded the yacht off Westbrook, Conn., the officials said. Mr. Bannon, 66, was on deck, drinking coffee and reading a book, when the raid occurred.
The criminal charges, filed a week before Mr. Trump was to accept the Republican nomination for a second term, marked a stark turn of fortune for the flamboyant political strategist. Mr. Bannon first came to prominence when he was in charge of the right-wing media outlet Breitbart, where he had aligned himself with the alt-right, a loose network of groups and people who promote white identity.
As chief strategist, Mr. Bannon was one of the most powerful figures in the White House early in the Trump administration, but he stepped down in August 2017 after frequently clashing with other aides.
With the indictment, Mr. Bannon became the seventh Trump associate to have been charged with federal crimes, a list that includes Paul Manafort, Mr. Trump’s former campaign manager; Michael T. Flynn, the former national security adviser; and Michael D. Cohen, Mr. Trump’s onetime lawyer and fixer.
The 24-page indictment, unsealed in Federal District Court in Manhattan, is by far the most politically sensitive case that Audrey Strauss, the acting United States attorney in Manhattan, has handled since she assumed her job after her predecessor, Geoffrey S. Berman, was fired in June by Mr. Trump.
At a brief arraignment on Thursday, Mr. Bannon, sunburned and his hair unbrushed, pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy, each of which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. The government agreed to release him from custody on a $5 million bond.
Walking to his car after being freed, Mr. Bannon said, “This entire fiasco is to stop people who want to build the wall.”
Shortly after the charges were announced, Mr. Trump had sought to distance himself from Mr. Bannon and the fund-raising initiative, though the president also expressed sympathy for his former adviser.
“I feel very badly,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “I haven’t been dealing with him for a very long period of time.”
The president said he knew nothing about the multimillion-dollar We Build the Wall campaign but quickly contradicted himself.
“I don’t like that project,” Mr. Trump said. “I thought it was being done for showboating reasons.” He called paying for the border wall privately “inappropriate.”
One of Mr. Trump’s sons, Donald Jr., publicly promoted the We Build the Wall effort at an event in 2019, calling it “private enterprise at its finest.”
Donald Trump Jr. said in a statement on Thursday that he had no involvement with the effort beyond praising it at that one event.
A White House official said that President Trump did not know Mr. Bannon would be arrested, and that he was told by aides after it happened.
Attorney General William P. Barr was briefed on the investigation several months ago, according to a Justice Department official, and the federal prosecutor’s office in Manhattan gave him notice that the indictment would be unsealed on Thursday.
According to the authorities, Mr. Bannon hatched the plot to defraud the donors with three other men: Brian Kolfage, a 38-year-old Air Force veteran and triple amputee from Miramar Beach, Fla.; Andrew Badolato, 56, a venture capitalist from Sarasota, Fla.; and Timothy Shea, 49, of Castle Rock, Colo.
Mr. Kolfage and Mr. Badolato were arrested in Florida on Thursday, and Mr. Shea, who prosecutors said funneled money for the group through a shell company he owned, was arrested in Denver.
Mr. Kolfage, who lost both his legs and one of his arms during his service in Iraq, created We Build the Wall as a GoFundMe page in December 2018. It was an immediate success, raising nearly $17 million in its first week online, prosecutors said.
To persuade potential donors to contribute to the effort, prosecutors said, Mr. Kolfage promised them that he would “not take a penny in salary or compensation” and that all of the money he raised would be used “in the execution of our mission and purpose.” According to the indictment, Mr. Bannon described We Build the Wall as a “volunteer organization.”
But all of that was false, prosecutors said. Instead, they claimed, Mr. Kolfage secretly took more than $350,000 in donations and spent it on home renovations, boat payments, a luxury S.U.V., a golf cart, jewelry and cosmetic surgery.
Mr. Bannon, working through an unnamed nonprofit organization, received more than $1 million from We Build the Wall, prosecutors said, some of which he used to pay off hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal expenses.
Mr. Bannon and three others are accused in a scheme to use funds raised for construction to pay for personal expenses.
Court papers suggested that prosecutors were in possession of several text messages between the men, including one in which Mr. Kolfage told Mr. Badolato that the payment scheme was “confidential” and should be kept on a “need to know” basis.
Mr. Kolfage initially pitched We Build the Wall as a way to sidestep the considerable legal and political obstacles to erecting Mr. Trump’s long-sought barrier. While the group has drawn approval from some top Homeland Security and Border Patrol officials, it has also prompted a backlash over its connections to Mr. Trump’s associates and its construction methods.
The federal government has built parts of the wall well within the American side of the border on federally owned land. But the sections built with private funds — slightly less than five miles in all, according to We Build the Wall’s website — have been erected along the riverbank of the Rio Grande in New Mexico and Texas.
Environmental groups have challenged those portions, citing potential harm. When experts recently said that sections along the river could fall into the river, even Mr. Trump criticized the project.
It remained unclear precisely when the yearlong investigation into the alleged scheme began. But last year, a bank informed Mr. Bannon that federal prosecutors had subpoenaed records related to We Build the Wall, according to a person briefed on the matter.
Prosecutors said that despite the effort’s early success, there were questions almost instantly “about Mr. Kolfage’s background” and the viability of his promises to use the money he had raised to actually build Mr. Trump’s wall.
Because of these concerns, prosecutors said, GoFundMe warned Mr. Kolfage that if he did not find a “legitimate nonprofit organization” to handle the money, it would return it to the donors. Mr. Kolfage claimed that the group had determined that only $800,000 of the funds needed to be given back.
“No rules were broken,” he said in an interview last year.
As the problems with donors mounted, Mr. Kolfage said he would establish a board of advisers and incorporate the group as We Build the Wall Inc.
Mr. Kolfage enlisted Kris Kobach, the former Kansas secretary of state, to serve on the board. Mr. Kobach, a longtime Trump supporter and a prominent immigration hard-liner, was not named in the indictment.
Mr. Kolfage also brought in Mr. Bannon, who had joined Mr. Trump’s campaign as chief executive in August 2016 and later became the White House’s chief strategist.
Several times, prosecutors said, Mr. Kolfage falsely assured his donors that every dime they gave him would go to the wall.
“It’s not possible to steal the money,” he said at one point, according to the indictment. “We have an advisory committee.”
When special agents from the Manhattan federal prosecutor’s office and postal inspectors boarded Mr. Guo’s yacht, the Lady May, in Long Island Sound, they searched the vessel and seized Mr. Bannon’s cellphone, officials said.
The investigators also conducted other searches in Florida, Colorado, Nevada, Missouri and Virginia, including at the homes of all of the defendants, the officials said.
Mr. Guo, a real-estate magnate, has been in exile since 2014 after fleeing China in anticipation of corruption and rape allegations by its government.
While living abroad — sometimes at a palatial apartment overlooking Central Park in Manhattan — he forged relationships with China hard-liners like Mr. Bannon and bought a membership to Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Fla.
Almost immediately after leaving the White House, Mr. Bannon struck up lucrative financial ties to Mr. Guo that began with a $150,000 loan, according to a memo written in May 2019 and obtained by The New York Times.
The GoFundMe page through which Mr. Bannon and his co-defendants raised money is now inactive. On Wednesday, less than 24 hours before their arrests, Mr. Kolfage made an appearance on Mr. Bannon’s podcast and explained the deactivation as an example of how tech companies censor conservative speech online.
When Mr. Bannon asked how people could continue giving money to the wall campaign, Mr. Kolfage responded by directing potential donors to his personal website, as well as another specifically for wall funding.
“How do people get access to We Build the Wall?” Mr. Bannon said.
“Don’t go to GoFundMe anymore,” Mr. Kolfage replied. “Screw them. Go straight to our website.”

Broncos Regular Season Week 12
Hawk Valley
During the week
I have moved this segment to the top of the page because some very important news dropped on Saturday the 28th. Driskel, a Denver Bronco quarterback tested positive for Covid on Thursday. Before Saturday's practice, the NFL notified the Broncos that due to contact tracing, Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles are to be identified as high risk Covid contacts and that they are ineligible to participate in the game against the New Orleans Saints. The NFL requires that they enter a five day quarantine period. All three have tested negative for Covid, but Driskel could be a super spreader.
THE DENVER BRONCOS WILL PLAY THE GAME AGAINST THE SAINTS WITHOUT ANY OF THEIR QUARTERBACKS.
Running back Freeman is the emergency quarterback during normal times.
Desperate times
The Denver Broncos actually tried to convince the NFL to let one of their coaches play quarterback for this game. The Broncos offered up Rob Calabrese, who ran the offense during practice on Saturday. He played quarterback at Central Florida back in 2008-2010. He threw 12 touchdown passes and 7 picks. In 2012, he was the "wildcat" quarterback/wide receiver.
The second coach the Broncos offered up is Justin Rascati. He played quarterback for Louisville in 2003 and at James Madison from 2004-2006. He threw 51 touchdown passes with only 6 picks.
The NFL told the Broncos they could not activate any of their coaches for the game today.
The Broncos then promoted undrafted, rookie and practice squad wide receiver Kendall Hinton to the starting quarterback role. He played quarterback for Wake Forest. There are conflicting reports on this, but he hasn't played quarterback since 2015 or 2017. The Broncos waived him on September 5, but resigned him to the practice squad on November 4.
The Broncos also have a quarterback nobody is talking about, Riley Neal from Vanderbilt.
The quarterback coach for the Denver Broncos is Mike Shula. He has 29 years of experience.
The Broncos also announced they signed Garett Bolles to a four year, 69 million dollar contract.
Quick Review
Last week, the Broncos beat the Dolphins 20-13. I know, I'm as shocked as you are. The Broncos played OK on offense, defense and special teams.
A longer review
Miami took the opening kickoff, gained four yards and then punted. The Broncos opening play was a run by Lindsay for no gain. Lock threw an incomplete pass on second down. At the 13:03 mark in the first quarter, Lock threw an interception.
Miami had the ball at the 22 yard line. On first down, they ran for four yards. On second and six, Justin Simmons intercepted a pass from their quarterback, but Denver was called for holding. Miami then ran for 7 yards on first down. After Miami picked up another first down, a wide receiver caught the ball in the end zone for a Dolphin touchdown.
The next two drives by both Denver and Miami ended in punts. When Denver got the ball back, Lock rolled out on first down and threw an incomplete pass. Lock tossed his trademark pass on second down. On third down, he connected with Hamler for a 14 yard gain. Lock completed a pass to Fant on first down, but Fant stepped out of bounds after picking up two yards. On second down, Lindsay ran for twenty yards. After two first down attempts were canceled by penalties, Lindsay lost 2 yards. On second and 22, Lock connected with Jeudy for a 9 yard gain. Lock then scrambled for 15 yards and a first down. Gordon ran for 9 yards on first down. Vannett gained 15 yards through the air on second down. On the next Dolphin drive, their quarterback was sacked for an eight yard loss on second down. They punted on fourth down.
Lindsay ran for two yards as the first quarter ended. The score at the end of the first quarter was 7-7. Lindsay gained three yards to start the second quarter. On third and five, Lock completed a pass to Hamler for a gain of 4 yards and after the catch, Hamler's body was bent in an odd fashion on the tackle. On fourth down and a yard short of the first down, Denver elected to punt.
The next Miami drive consisted of a 3 yard gain, followed by a 3 yard loss, followed by an incomplete pass. They punted with about 12 minutes left in the half.
Lock connected with Patrick for a 30 yard gain on first down. Then Lock found Fant for a 9 yard gain. Gordon came in and lost two yards. On third down, Lock threw an incomplete pass accurately enough to avoid an intentional grounding call. On forth down, the Broncos kicked a 29 yard field goal.
The Dolphins ran for 8 yards on first down. Then they ran up the middle for the first down. Four plays later, the Dolphins had crossed mid-field. The Dolphins picked up 5 yards on the next two plays. On third down they picked up 7 yards. Then on first down, they completed a pass for a 40 yard gain. After two incomplete passes, their quarterback was sacked for a 9 yard loss. Miami kicked a field goal which tied the game at 10 with about three minutes remaining.
On the kickoff, the Broncos were called for a penalty and the ball was placed on the 10 yard line. Lindsay picked up 5 yards right before the two minute warning. On second down, Gordon exploded for a 25 yard gain. Lock then threw two incomplete passes. On third down, Lock connected with Jeudy for a 23 yard gain. On first down, Lock threw his signature incomplete pass. With 1:31 left, Miami called a timeout. On second down, the Broncos picked up one yard. On third and nine, with 51 seconds left, Gordon ran for 7 yards. The Broncos then kicked a field goal as time expired in the first half.
Back on the field, Lindsay picked up five yards on the opening play of the second half. Lindsay ran to the right and picked up 18 yards on second down. Gordon came in and picked up three yards. Lock then connected with Fant for a 15 yard gain, but he might have fumbled. Denver quickly handed the ball off to Gordon for a two yard gain. Then Vannett caught a pass 9 yards. With 11 minutes left in the quarter, the Broncos had moved the ball down to the 20 yard line. On first down, Lindsay ran to the left for a 3 yard gain. Lock followed that up with an incomplete pass. On third and 7, Lock completed a pass to Jeudy for a 6 yard gain. With 9:30 left in the quarter, on fourth and 1, the Broncos decided to go for it. Gordon failed to pick up the yard.
The Denver defense stepped up on the next Dolphin drive. On first down, Miami failed to gain a yard. On second down, their quarterback was sacked for a 5 yard loss. On third down their quarterback completed a pass for a 7 yard gain. With 7:30 left, the Dolphins punted.
Lock completed a pass to Patrick for a gain of 9 yards on first down. On second down, Gordon lost a yard. Lock then connected with Hamler for a 16 yard gain. Gordon ran to the right for a 9 yard gain. On second down, Lindsay picked up the first down. On first down, Lock threw an incomplete pass into the end zone. Lindsay ran to the right and picked up 2 yards. On third down, the Miami defense was flagged for pass interference and roughing the passer. On first down, Lock completed a pass to Patrick for a 7 yard gain. At the 2:38 mark in the third quarter, Gordon ran for 20 yards and a Denver touchdown. Denver led at this point 20-10.
Miami ran down the clock for the next two and a half minutes to end the quarter, but they were flagged for holding right before the quarter ended. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Miami's quarterback rolled out, all the way, for a two yard loss. On second down, they picked up 6 yards. On third and 16, Miami was called for a false start. On third and 21, Chubb sacked their quarterback. The Dolphins punted on fourth down.
The Dolphins defense held the Broncos offense to three plays and a punt. At the 10:44 mark in the fourth quarter, Miami changed quarterbacks. Fitzpatrick came in and the Dolphins gained 7 yards. On second down, Miami gained nothing. On third down, Fitzpatrick completed a pass for a 26 yard gain. The Dolphins were now at mid-field. On first down, they moved the ball through the air for 11 yards. On first down, Fitz threw an incomplete pass. On second down, Fitz threw a pass that should have been intercepted. Fitz scrambled for a one yard gain on third down. At the 7:51 mark in the fourth quarter, Miami kicked a 53 yard field goal.
On the next drive, Lock connected with Fant for a 29 yard gain on first down. Then Lock scrambled for nine yards. Lindsay scampered for 15 yards on second down. Gordon lost 2 yards on first down. On second down, Miami was flagged for holding and unnecessary roughness. On first down, Gordon ran towards the end zone but fumbled on the one yard line and Miami recovered the fumble.
At this point, there were a little over 5 minutes left in the game. On first down, Fitzpatrick threw an incomplete pass. On second down, Miami picked up 15 yards. On first down, Chubb was flagged for unnecessary roughness. After the penalty, the Dolphins completed a pass for a one yard gain. On second down, with 4:15 left in the game, the Dolphins picked up 8 yards. The ball was now on the 45 yard line. The Dolphins picked up 6 yards through the air on third down. Then Fitzpatrick thew an incomplete pass with 3:31 left. On second down, Miami was called for holding. The Dolphins picked up 9 yards on second and 20. On third down, Fitzpatrick completed a pass for a first down. The ball was now on the 12 yard line. After the two minute warning, Fitzpatrick threw an incomplete pass that was almost intercepted. On second and 10, The Dolphins picked up two yards. On third and 8, with 1:09 left in the game, Fitzpatrick threw a pass into the end zone that was intercepted.
The Broncos then ran out the clock and the final play of the game was a completed pass from Lock to Patrick on fourth down. Denver beat the red hot Miami Dolphins 20-13.

This will be an interesting game. I have no idea what to expect from Denver. 40 running attempts?
For the trends that follow, it should be noted that the starting quarterback for the Saints, Drew Brees, was injured in week 9 and although he was the starting quarterback for game 10, he did not finish the game. The Saints expect him to return in week 15.

Wick/Beumee Wildlife Habitat Management Area, WY (No. 2)
Wyoming is a state in the mountain region of the Western United States. The state is the 10th largest by area, the least populous, and the second most sparsely populated state in the country. Wyoming is bordered on the north by Montana, on the east by South Dakota and Nebraska, on the south by Colorado, on the southwest by Utah, and on the west by Idaho and Montana. The state population was estimated at 577,737 in 2018, which is less than 31 of the most populous U.S. cities including Denver in neighboring Colorado. Cheyenne is the state capital and the most populous city, with an estimated population of 63,624 in 2017.
The western two-thirds of the state is covered mostly by the mountain ranges and rangelands of the Rocky Mountains, while the eastern third of the state is high elevation prairie called the High Plains. Almost half of the land in Wyoming is owned by the U.S. government, leading Wyoming to rank sixth by area and fifth by proportion of a state's land owned by the federal government. Federal lands include two national parks—Grand Teton and Yellowstone—two national recreation areas, two national monuments, several national forests, historic sites, fish hatcheries, and wildlife refuges.
Original inhabitants of the region include the Crow, Arapaho, Lakota, and Shoshone. Southwestern Wyoming was claimed by the Spanish Empire and then Mexican territory until it was ceded to the United States in 1848 at the end of the Mexican–American War. The region acquired the name Wyoming when a bill was introduced to the U.S. Congress in 1865 to provide a "temporary government for the territory of Wyoming". The name was used earlier for the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania, and is derived from the Munsee word xwé:wamənk, meaning "at the big river flat".
The main drivers of Wyoming's economy are mineral extraction—mostly coal, oil, natural gas, and trona—and tourism. Agricultural commodities include livestock (beef), hay, sugar beets, grain (wheat and barley), and wool. The climate is semi-arid and continental, drier and windier than the rest of the U.S., with greater temperature extremes.
Wyoming has been a politically conservative state since the 1950s, with the Republican Party candidate winning every presidential election except that of 1964.

Meet Iman Jodeh: Islamist Candidate for Colorado’s House of Representatives
Note: Jodeh had almost 3x the number of votes as her Republican challenger in their respective primaries.
by Ahnaf Kalam
She seems more interested in Palestine’s politics than Aurora’s.
Residents of Colorado's House District 41 are concerned with several perennial issues that resurface every election year. The Aurora suburbs are experiencing crumbling transportation infrastructure, increasing cost of living expenses, and a massive upsurge in homicide and other violent crime.
Promising to tackle these issues, the district's Democratic Party candidate Iman Jodeh is running on a progressive platform of criminal justice reform and minimum wage increases. Yet, Jodeh's involvement with an Islamist mosque and her history of pro-Palestinian activism reveals an alternative agenda that stands starkly at odds with her constituents' values.
Jodeh, who ran unopposed in the primaries, will face off against Republican Bob Andrews for control of the House district, which includes a large portion of the southeast Denver metroplex. According to the Sentinel, Andrews – who is running on a platform of "small government" and "fiscal responsibility" – faces an "uphill battle" to defeat Jodeh after the previous Republican candidate to run for District 41 lost to the Democratic incumbent by 30 points.
Further complicating Andrews chances has been an inability to raise money for his campaign. By late September, Jodeh had collected $58,000 in campaign contributions, compared to a mere $4,000 raised by her opponent.
Jodeh should credit her fundraising success to a series of high-level endorsements, such as from Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and Planned Parenthood Colorado. In September, she was among the speakers selected for the Biden campaign's "100 Women for Biden" virtual event. But unbeknownst to her progressive supporters, Ms. Jodeh is the spokesperson for the Colorado Muslim Society (CMS), a mosque with a lengthy history of preaching homophobia, misogyny and intolerance.
In early June, CMS published its guidelines for re-opening during the COVID-19 pandemic, including a provision that restricted women from attending the mosque until further notice -- with no explanation given as to why. This prohibition was subsequently amended days later in an updated posting, but only after this author contacted Jodeh to inquire about the discriminatory policy. She has failed to respond as of this printing.
Jodeh has been the CMS spokesperson for many years, where she represented Muslim clerics such as Karim Abuzaid, the mosque's senior imam between 2010 and 2014. Among the gratuitous bigotry and extremism regularly espoused by the Salafist cleric, Abuzaid once notably preached to a Denver congregation that fornicators should be flogged and adulterers stoned. In the same sermon, he told worshippers that the AIDS virus is a punishment from Allah for practicing homosexuality. More recently, Abuzaid blamed the coronavirus on homosexuality during a live webinar.
In February 2020, CMS hosted an event by the Muslim Legal Fund of America featuring Palestinian American activist Linda Sarsour, who used her platform to advocate for convicted Al Qaeda operative Syed Fahad Hashmi and express support for Noor Salman, the wife of slain Pulse Nightclub shooter Omar Mateen. Sarsour is a notorious anti-Semite who was ousted from her position as chairwoman of the National Women's March in 2019 as a result of her inexcusable history of anti-Jewish bigotry.
American Islamists have been quite active in allying with progressive and feminist movements, but below the surface, the beliefs and doctrines to which they adhere are often incompatible.
Still, Jodeh has succeeded in convincing the press that her apparent fundamentalist beliefs have no bearing on her progressive politics. In a recent interview with Arab News, the congressional candidate attempted to clarify her unique brand of feminism by whitewashing Quranic scripture:
"In Islam, there's a chapter in the Qur'an called 'Al-Nisa' or 'The Woman.' There is not a chapter called 'The Man,'" she explained. Yet, Jodeh's interpretation completely neglected to mention the theological reasons why women, unlike men, require a chapter in the Quran prescribing gender-based rules.
Even in the contemporary West, Islamic scripture may yield grotesque abuses of women's rights. For instance, a 2011 study from the Tahirih Justice Center found at least 3,000 cases of forced marriage in the U.S. over the preceding two years, with the majority of cases coming from the Muslim community.
So long as Muslim leaders ignore these regressive practices, which are often legitimized by Islamists, they stand to continue. Such is the case in Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar's district, where the Hennepin County Medical Center reports that 99 percent of Somali women have suffered from the worst category of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Despite its prevalence among her own constituents, Omar shut down a question about FGM during a Muslim political convention, calling it "appalling" and a "waste" of time.
In addition to her willful ignorance of these issues, Jodeh's constituency should also be concerned with her obsessive focus on the Palestinian resistance, which seems to overshadow her commitments towards climate change, health care, and criminal justice reform. In the same Arab News interview, the Denver-born Palestinian-American said that her love for Palestine is ingrained, and that "she was never just American, she was Palestinian American."
"This is my identity, I will never abandon this narrative, because I feel I have an obligation to all Palestinians everywhere to advocate when I can," she said.
But what about her obligation to the diverse families living in southwest Aurora and Arapahoe County?
Jodeh's activism on behalf of Palestine spans years. In December 2017, she was interviewed while protesting President Trump's decision to declare Jerusalem the official capital of Israel. As she was speaking to a reporter, the crowd of demonstrators could be heard chanting: "From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free!", a popular slogan of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas and an implicit call for the destruction of Israel.
Moreover, Jodeh founded the nonprofit "Meet the Middle East," purportedly to educate Americans on the region and foster improved relations between two distinct cultures. However, a closer look at Jodeh's curriculum demonstrates that she is truly concerned with a single objective: depicting Palestinians in a positive light, while mostly ignoring other diverse ethnic and religious communities located in the Middle East.
Jodeh should consider that her overwhelming focus on the Arab-Israeli conflict may well be alienating Democrats who do not share her enthusiasm for Palestine. She could learn from the March primaries in Illinois, where U.S. congressional candidate Rashad Darwish's pro-Palestinian activism may have alienated many Arab and Muslim voters – even though portions of his district were situated in the "Little Palestine" of Chicago.
Among other things, residents of Aurora are most concerned with their property taxes, the rising cost of living, and the eternally congested and perpetually under-construction highways in Aurora. While Jodeh has been racking up endorsements from prominent Democratic groups and individuals over the past few months, she doesn't appear to have much experience in addressing any of the larger issues that locals find concerning.
Instead, Jodeh's entire campaign is predicated on her credentials and experience as a pro-Palestinian activist, and as an educator on Islam and the Middle East – issues that most Aurora residents likely consider inconsequential to their personal prosperity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned American society upside down inside of a week. That includes the presidential campaign, which has already taken a backseat to news of quarantines, lockdowns and hospitals preparing to be overrun with sick people. Social distancing means an end to conventional retail politics; kissing a baby or giving a hug to an older supporter could mean spreading an invisible killer. Holding a rally — one shudders to think of the amount of infected spittle that could be sprayed — when public officials are urging the closure of schools, churches, bars and restaurants is nearly unthinkable.
Last week, both Sanders and Joe Biden canceled large public events in Cleveland because of worries over the spread of COVID-19, which last Wednesday the World Health Organization officially called a pandemic. When Biden made a victory speech Tuesday night after his win in several primary states, he did so in the presence of a cheering crowd in Philadelphia that was cordoned off from him. On Wednesday, his campaign said in an email that it was cancelling large in-person events in Illinois and Florida and that it would hold them virtually. They announced tele-town halls for their surrogates and Jill Biden held a virtual debate watch party Sunday — the debate was not held in front of a crowd. Trump canceled a rally in Wisconsin scheduled for March 19, while Sanders live-streamed a fireside chat on Saturday. All three men in the running for the presidency are in their 70s, placing them at high risk for serious repercussions if they contracted the virus.
So will the candidates lose any great value to their campaigns as they lose large in-person gatherings like rallies? What happens when there’s a presidential campaign with no rallies?
American campaigns and campaign coverage are driven by what historian Daniel Boorstin called “pseudo-events” — artificial inflection points meant to “drive the message.” Rallies are the crown jewel pseudo-events in our age of populist politics. In 2016, President Trump calibrated his rallies — earned-media bonanzas — to be uplifting, comedic, dark and cathartically angry all at once. Bernie Sanders has relied on his to prove the passion of his support, even in the face of establishment skepticism. The rally is as intrinsic to the American political fabric as flag pins, sex scandals, and elected officials saying, “folks.”
The content of rallies matter, but as my colleague Nathanial Rakich wrote earlier this primary cycle, one shouldn’t let crowd sizes lead them into a false sense that a candidate will outperform their polls. Biden, who is the front-runner in the Democratic primary and who seems all but a shoo-in for the nomination, hasn’t been known for his crowds at all, while Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who dropped out of the race, both made massive rallies centerpieces of their campaigns.
For Sanders, the rally proved critical in his rise in the 2016 primary. Political scientists John Sides, Michael Tesler and Lynn Vavreck’s book, “Identity Crisis,” pointed to the large rallies that followed Sanders’s May 2015 campaign kickoff as a large part of the reason “Sanders’s share of news coverage far exceeded his share in national polls.” He drew estimated crowds of 4,000 in Minneapolis on May 31, 2015, 5,500 in Denver on June 20, 9,600 in Madison on July 1, 11,000 in Phoenix on July 18, and from August 8 to August 10, 15,000 in Seattle, 28,000 in Portland, Oregon, and 27,500 in Los Angeles.
In an email, Sides said the cancellation of 2020 events seems different and less likely to make an impact on the outcome of the primary campaign. “We’re not in the invisible primary anymore and not even really early in the primary season. So it’s an open question whether a rally or two, and the accompanying news coverage, would do much to change any voters’ mind. I guess since Sanders is currently trailing, he’d prefer to get all the attention he possibly can.”
The question of how to get attention for your campaign — the good kind, not the “yikes, someone at my rally got coronavirus” kind — is likely to dog a rally-less 2020 campaign. It’s unclear how many people will tune into live-streamed fireside chats or digital rally events or watch parties. In-person events are critical to campaigns since they help build lists of supporters and garner local media coverage. (I reached out to the Biden and Sanders campaigns about their plans for events in the foreseeable future but did not hear back.)
In an email, political scientist and FiveThirtyEight contributor Joshua Darr pointed to studies that have shown “positive effects of candidate appearances, and those effects are often tied to media coverage.”
Political scientists Scott L. Althaus, Peter F. Nardulli & Daron R. Shaw noted in 2002 that candidates often make a disproportionate number of campaign appearances in states with Electoral College importance (makes sense!). The point of those events isn’t just to connect with the people at the event, it’s to broadcast their appearance over local news, which campaigns see as friendlier than national media. Plus, the authors write, “candidates know that voters perceive local news media reports to be much more credible than television advertisements.”
But do these rallies really change minds? A 2017 paper by political scientists Joshua Kalla and David Broockman argued that advertising and candidate contact with voters actually has no clear effect in persuading voters in a general election (primaries are a different story). Early on in a general election, campaigns can have persuadable effects, but those dissipate during the closing months of the election. That said, the authors note that “campaigns can sometimes identify pockets of persuadable voters” in some elections with special circumstances. One of the examples of persuadable subgroups in an unusual election came from the 2016 presidential race. There were “statistically significant effects” in an analysis of the presidential race in Ohio. “This was a highly unusual race because (a) a Republican candidate (Donald Trump) taking many positions out of step with the party, and (b) the prevailing campaign messages from the Democratic candidate’s (Hillary Clinton) campaign did not focus on the economic messages one might expect to persuade Ohio voters,” they wrote.
What will undoubtedly change is the way campaigns try to reach voters. “A campaign without rallies would be very different,” Darr said. “Campaigns would need to find ways to earn media and connect their candidate with supporters virtually, attracting earned media coverage of their creative solutions.” He noted that text message outreach and phone banking will become more important as the campaigns continue during the uncertainty of the pandemic.
The 2020 general election race between Trump and whoever comes out of the Democratic contest might well become a precisely tailored endeavor, with campaigns targeting specific communities in specific states with as personalized an outreach as they can muster. At the same time, they’ll have to maintain a national image via novel earned-media strategies.
Though he dropped out of the presidential race, Pete Buttigieg demonstrated a creative solution for earned media coverage recently. Last week, he guest-hosted “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” using the opening monologue to rib Trump, promote an emergency COVID-19 response bill, and generally cultivate his image as a smart, likeable guy. The Buttigieg campaign was ahead of the curve in its earned media strategy — the digital-native fluency of the first millennial presidential candidate can’t be underrated. It remains to be seen whether the septuagenarians still running for president will prove to be as creative. Their political futures may depend on it.
