Stories about AI-generated political content are like stories about people drunkenly setting off fireworks: There’s a good chance they’ll end in disaster. WIRED is tracking AI usage in political campaigns across the world, and so far examples include pornographic deepfakes and misinformation-spewing chatbots. It’s gotten to the point where the US Federal Communications Commission has proposed mandatory disclosures for AI use in television and radio ads.
Despite concerns, some US political campaigns are embracing generative AI tools. There’s a growing category of AI-generated political content flying under the radar this election cycle, developed by startups including Denver-based BattlegroundAI, which uses generative AI to come up with digital advertising copy at a rapid clip. “Hundreds of ads in minutes,” its website proclaims.
BattlegroundAI positions itself as a tool specifically for progressive campaigns—no MAGA types allowed. And it is moving fast: It launched a private beta only six weeks ago and a public beta just last week. Cofounder and CEO Maya Hutchinson is currently at the Democratic National Convention trying to attract more clients. So far, the company has around 60, she says. (The service has a freemium model, with an upgraded option for $19 a month.)
“It’s kind of like having an extra intern on your team,” Hutchinson, a marketer who got her start on the digital team for President Obama’s reelection campaign, tells WIRED. We’re sitting at a picnic table inside the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, and she’s raising her voice to be heard over music blasting from a nearby speaker. “If you’re running ads on Facebook or Google, or developing YouTube scripts, we help you do that in a very structured fashion.”
BattlegroundAI’s interface asks users to select from five different popular large language models—including ChatGPT, Claude, and Anthropic—to generate answers; it then asks users to further customize their results by selecting for tone and “creativity level,” as well as how many variations on a single prompt they might want. It also offers guidance on whom to target and helps craft messages geared toward specialized audiences for a variety of preselected issues, including infrastructure, women’s health, and public safety.
BattlegroundAI declined to provide any examples of actual political ads created using its services. However, WIRED tested the product by creating a campaign aimed at extremely left-leaning adults aged 88 to 99 on the issue of media freedom. “Don't let fake news pull the wool over your bifocals!” one of the suggested ads began.
BattlegroundAI offers only text generation—no AI images or audio. The company adheres to various regulations around the use of AI in political ads.
“What makes Battleground so well suited for politics is it’s very much built with those rules in mind,” says Andy Barr, managing director for Uplift, a Democratic digital ad agency. Barr says Uplift has been testing the BattlegroundAI beta for a few weeks. “It’s helpful with idea generation,” he says. The agency hasn’t yet released any ads using Battleground copy yet, but it has already used it to develop concepts, Barr adds.
I confess to Hutchinson that if I were a politician, I would be scared to use BattlegroundAI. Generative AI tools are known to “hallucinate,” a polite way of saying that they sometimes make things up out of whole cloth. (They bullshit, to use academic parlance.) I ask how she’s ensuring that the political content BattlegroundAI generates is accurate.
“Nothing is automated,” she replies. Hutchinson notes that BattlegroundAI’s copy is a starting-off point, and that humans from campaigns are meant to review and approve it before it goes out. “You might not have a lot of time, or a huge team, but you’re definitely reviewing it.”
Of course, there’s a rising movement opposing how AI companies train their products on art, writing, and other creative work without asking for permission. I ask Hutchinson what she’d say to people who might oppose how tools like ChatGPT are trained. “Those are incredibly valid concerns,” she says. “We need to talk to Congress. We need to talk to our elected officials.”
I ask whether BattlegroundAI is looking at offering language models that train on only public domain or licensed data. “Always open to that,” she says. “We also need to give folks, especially those who are under time constraints, in resource-constrained environments, the best tools that are available to them, too. We want to have consistent results for users and high-quality information—so the more models that are available, I think the better for everybody.”
And how would Hutchinson respond to people in the progressive movement—who generally align themselves with the labor movement—objecting to automating ad copywriting? “Obviously valid concerns,” she says. “Fears that come with the advent of any new technology—we’re afraid of the computer, of the light bulb.”
Hutchinson lays out her stance: She doesn’t see this as a replacement for human labor so much as a way to reduce grunt work. “I worked in advertising for a very long time, and there's so many elements of it that are repetitive, that are honestly draining of creativity,” she says. “AI takes away the boring elements.” She sees BattlegroundAI as a helpmeet for overstretched and underfunded teams.
Taylor Coots, a Kentucky-based political strategist who recently began using the service, describes it as “very sophisticated,” and says it helps identify groups of target voters and ways to tailor messaging to reach them in a way that would otherwise be difficult for small campaigns. In battleground races in gerrymandered districts, where progressive candidates are major underdogs, budgets are tight. “We don’t have millions of dollars,” he says. “Any opportunities we have for efficiencies, we’re looking for those.”
Will voters care if the writing in digital political ads they see is generated with the help of AI? “I'm not sure there is anything more unethical about having AI generate content than there is having unnamed staff or interns generate content,” says Peter Loge, an associate professor and program director at George Washington University who founded a project on ethics in political communication.
“If one could mandate that all political writing done with the help of AI be disclosed, then logically you would have to mandate that all political writing”—such as emails, ads, and op-eds—“not done by the candidate be disclosed,” he adds.
Still, Loge has concerns about what AI does to public trust on a macro level, and how it might impact the way people respond to political messaging going forward. “One risk of AI is less what the technology does, and more how people feel about what it does,” he says. “People have been faking images and making stuff up for as long as we've had politics. The recent attention on generative AI has increased peoples' already incredibly high levels of cynicism and distrust. If everything can be fake, then maybe nothing is true.”
Hutchinson, meanwhile, is focused on her company’s shorter-term impact. “We really want to help people now,” she says. “We’re trying to move as fast as we can.”

Hi. Here’s the “company vs. Tae” in the LGBT context anon. Thanks for your reply. Just to clarify, I'm neither a hater nor a JKKr. I'm interested in understanding the relationship between the company and Tae. Thinking the company is either covering for him or being malicious is too simplistic. The dynamics are likely more complex.
Bang Si-hyuk’s personality remains a mystery. He keeps his personal life as private as BTS’s. We only know he’s 50+ years old, unmarried, with no children. His Instagram mostly features photos with his artists. His only revealed personal connection is J.Y. Park, whom he calls his teacher, brother, and best friend.
The concepts of freedom and self-acceptance appeared early in BTS songs, probably when they had little influence over song choices or concepts. The LGBT themes could be Si-hyuk’s personal agenda or his attempt to resonate with the younger generation. Additionally, Si-hyuk aimed for the Western market early on, and aligning with the LGBT agenda might have influenced his decisions for BTS.
I don’t doubt Tae’s personal choices are genuine, but it’s hard to believe he had much say in early BTS topics before 2018. Si-hyuk is listed as the first author of "Stigma." It's hard to imagine Tae confiding his real story to him for the song’s basis.
Thanks to those noting that the "Denver Nuggets" rainbow jersey is not specifically related to LGBT, though Tae could still wear it as an LGBT symbol. There are many factors to consider to understand the full picture.
Hi anon!
Ooooo, this is interesting! I always say that most things are complex and nuanced and I definitely agree that this applies to this situation as well. I’ll probably expand it a bit to all members and not just Tae.. since I think there are possibly more queer members than just him… Jk and Jm being the most obvious ones imo.
So.. my thoughts on Bang Pd and his relationship with the members is that it’s mostly performative. I think he possibly has a good relationship with some, and a lesser one with others. I do not buy that he is a father figure to them for one bit. I think that’s something SK’s love to buy into (parents of idols as well) because very often really young children are left to the care of the company the go to. A prime example is Min Heejin and Nj’s.. no matter what that bond actually is.. she’s not a mother to them.. and I dislike that portrayal. Ceo’s are in a position of power.. they place business first. Bang Pd in my eyes definitely always places business first. Him not having known Tae’s name for a ling time to me definitely shows that there was no strong bond between them. Tae has said other things that to me make it seem that bond never developed much.
Whether Bang Pd has personal motives for encouraging themes of freedom and Lgbt themes I find hard to decide on.. we just know nothing about the man. For all I know he could be queer himself and also closeted.. who knows. I think he bases his decisions on money. I think the reason why members aren’t able to be out is because it will lose them fans and money and status. It’s neither protection or malice in my opinion… I think it’s a business decision. I do think a queerfriendly approach is decided on.. in favor of a more western approach probably, but also because I think the members themselves want this and support this. I do not think they are without power these days. They seem to have power over their music, I suspect there’s limits to what they can do though.
With the place and status BTS members now have in Sk, and them having grown into men.. with voices of their own.. who probably no longer blindly follow what the company wants from them… I feel hopeful that maybe a new direction will be taken in the future (though perhaps that is wishful thinking). From both Jm and Tae’s projects I feel there is more freedom for them to enter queer spaces. Bang Pd’s focus will perhaps also shift to younger groups at one point.. which isn’t weird.. it’s business. And personally I don’t really mind that, since I think it will mean more freedom for the boys. Talking as a Tkkr, it’s not just them possibly being queer that is a problem… it’s them being together that’s a problem as well. Even if at one point they get more individual freedom, I think the freedom to come out as a couple isn’t anywhere on the horizon at this point. That isn’t just because of homophobia imo, but also a privacy and safety issue.
As for Stigma.. I agree, I hardly think Tae would have shared his story with BangPd… though perhaps Bang knew of Tae’s sexuality early on. It would kinda depend on which portion of the song was written by whom.. and who made which alterations. The changing of a few words can change the whole meaning of a song.. so I find it hard to say much about this without knowing the songwriting process. It’s a highly metaphorical song though.. it’s able to mean different things to different people.
In a nutshell.. I think Tae is queer, which is why we see queer related things from him. I think Bang Pd is well aware that having an out queer person (or several) in an idol band would not have led them to the succes they wanted. Aside from that.. being queer positive would make them seen progressive and speak to a younger and wider audience, which Bang Pd probably also realized.

I'm thinking of posting this on medium but I'm genuinely scared. I'd welcome thoughts.
I’m So Terrified To Tell These Stories But Something Needs To Be Said
The concept of victim blame always seemed to be presented as a phenomenon exclusively found in the arena of sexualized violence. As a survivor of several episodes of sexualized violence, I’ve found the experience repeated as the daughter of a deadbeat billionaire father and suffered exploitation by unscrupulous landlords.
Victim blame has undeniably been experienced by many victims of sexual violence but rather than being a phenomenon of sexual violence, victim blame is a feature of any situation in which the perpetrator has a more political, economic, and/or social power than the victim. No one blames you if you buy a huge TV that’s stolen because you have demonstrated you are of the owning class. However, if you want your landlord to fix a leaky roof, you must justify why you don’t just move somewhere else without a leaky roof.
My father says on one of his own website bios his and assets are worth in excess of two billion dollars. He used addresses in South Africa and the Channel Islands. That my single mom in Denver, Colorado could not begin to navigate international family law is my father’s proof that he was not responsible for child support. So insulated by privilege provided by wealth, I am forced to defend that a father should pay child support. A father who has made hundred of millions in housing while I experienced a decade of housing insecurity and intermittent homelessness.
Over the years I’ve received variously skeptical and accusatory questions about why my mom didn’t do this or I didn’t do that. The truth is neither of us could find an advocate. Would you want to enrage a billionaire? Would you go out on that limb? No one ever asks how he could live knowing his daughter was unhoused? My half siblings ask why my mom didn’t do something. They don’t confront our father and demand he do something, despite having 700 units in my city.
The experience of being blamed in a situation I seemed to be powerless in was replicated again in my relationship with my landlord. In September of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, eviction ban in effect, rent paid through October 5th, my landlord have my utilities cut at the street. I was given nothing in writing but was forced to vacate on the 18th of September. The inspector from the energy company never asked if I lived there. I tried to talk to the police, I was told it was a civil matter and I needed an attorney. I was unable to obtain a call back. No one wants to represent a tenant.
I was “allowed” to say in a windowless room with a back breaking sectional in half a duplex shared by their adult son, the yard was also shared with another person so I had to coordinate for my dog’s pee breaks. I had been renting a two bed, two bath, single family with a yard, so the accommodations were not equal.
They moved me into another property without any maintenance between tenants. I couldn’t move in until 6pm because the guy was still in the house. There was a period of 18 hours during which I was renting two houses and not allowed to occupy either and had current leases for neither.
What had been an agreement to allow an elderly parent to sleep on my couch over the holidays became me providing 24/7 home healthcare because he had just had a “mild stroke” and he had been checked out of the hospital so he spend the holidays at home. Not only did I care for the stroke patient with dementia, I ended up coordinating the in home care professionals and entertaining the family.
Around that time I fell in love for the first time. Being verbally abused by a man grappling with his own mortality in the company of relative strangers, at Christmas no less, was not ideal as a backdrop to our budding romance. He is a coffee guy and so I learned to make it but I don’t drink it. I made it for everyone. My landlord would visit with her father have an espresso, sometimes and then some breakfast that I made, and then do other things like prep another property.
Why would anyone allow this? Was she paid? Did she get free rent? No.
After Christmas, my beloved having vastly misjudged the power dynamics involved, gently informed my landlord that I wasn’t able to get any of my own work done and was too nice to say so. He also asked if she had a steam cleaner, this was because I was not comfortable laying down the law vis a vis use and changing of urinary and fecal incontinence products. He was able to do it but would belligerently insist it wasn’t necessary. Within 24 hours she was threatening housing. She was offended that I suggest my dog couch was soiled by her father, even though it’s why he was ostensibly not in her 5 bedroom home across the street.
I have talked that all through with a number of attorney’s intake people I’m asked again and again why didn’t I? Get help. I tried. I was unhoused from March 2019 to October 2019. My housing is everything to me. I am not being dramatic when I say I would rather die than lose my housing. That’s the answer. Why did I allow that and all the other horrifying things? Because of existential extortion.
Power assures your destruction if you try to fight it. If you’re a victim of sexual violence you face further violation and there’s a like 90% chance the perpetrator won’t even be charged. Nor have people stopped blaming the victims of office harassment for the consequences suffered by their harassers. If you have a legitimate grievance against the billionaire class, you may not be a daughter but you could be a caterer that didn’t get paid for a society wedding or a gardener or a tenant, that you simply can’t afford justice. Maybe someone wields power like housing or income to get more.
We as a society need to broaden our recognition of when victims of power abuses are demanded to justify how they’ve coped with their situation. The demand for explanations always seems to look down. Power does not expect questions and they rarely seem to come.
Again I see parallels between my sets of experiences. When I had a particularly brutal encounter, I played nice all the way until he was in a lyft and via text for months after. I didn’t want him to come back. I also feared his confidence. I was sure that, despite him needing to hold me in place, his assuredness I wanted what happened would convince a third party. My mom she feared him taking me in spite, she convinced herself I was her choice so solely her responsibility and his marriage needed protecting. With my father, well the fact that he hasn’t treated me like one of his children has made people assume I’m lying. I’m something he has gotten away. The housing is an undecided struggle but terrifying none the less.
I’ll leave you with image…Coffee guy left and never came back. He knew something was up and bailed before he had to know and pretend to care. I’d had a miscarriage and didn’t know how to talk about it because I hadn’t known prior to miscarrying I was pregnant. I couldn’t do anything for months. I missed that had once again conceived in our last days and then miscarried a second time. In one brief moment outside my landlord saw me and told me she missed the coffee in a way that made it clear she had wanted me to go on making her espressos. I’ll remind you I don’t drink coffee, the coffee stuff was his and I was grieving a pregnancy, my first love and a future that seemed so real to me I could see it when I closed my eyes.

Imaginations Fly Over North Carolina’s “Fairy Circles” of Hydrogen. (Sierra Club)
Tumblr media
Excerpt from this story from Sierra Club:
Many people are drawn to eastern North Carolina by the aroma of its legendary vinegar-based barbecue. Geoffrey Ellis admits that pulled pork was a big perk of his February trip to the region. But officially, the research geologist with the US Geological Survey had traveled south of Fayetteville in pursuit of a target with no smell at all: hydrogen gas.
While hydrogen is the most common element in the universe, it’s also 14 times lighter than air and easily escapes into space. That makes it extremely rare in Earth’s atmosphere, present at an average of just .5 parts per million. Nearly all the hydrogen used for fuel and industrial processes is made artificially, either by reacting methane gas with steam or breaking down water through electrolysis.
Yet Ellis knew that in 2012, an international research team led by the geochemist Viacheslav Zgonnik had visited North Carolina and found much higher levels of hydrogen, hundreds or thousands of parts per million, around the unusual geological features known locally as Carolina bays. These shallow, oval, often swampy depressions, the largest up to five miles across, have long intrigued geologists and the general public alike. In the US, they stretch in a sporadic band along the East Coast from the Florida-Georgia border up to New Jersey. Similar features are present all over the world, including Russia, Brazil, and Australia.
Scientists aren’t entirely sure how the bays form, Ellis says. Hypotheses include the warming of permafrost after the last ice age, the action of strong winds over many centuries, and the melting of icy fragments from exploded comets. Popular names for the features, like “fairy circles” and “witch rings,” often ascribe more supernatural origins. The elevated hydrogen readings added to the mystery, and Ellis wanted to see if North Carolina’s bays still harbored the gas a decade after Zgonnik’s measurements.
The concentrations Ellis detected were the same or even higher than before—the first evidence of long-term, naturally occurring hydrogen seepage in the United States. “The trends were very consistent,” Ellis says. “I was surprised; I expected that we would see more variability over time. To be honest, I don’t really know what that means.”
Zgonnik is less cautious in his interpretation. He sees the bays as markers of potentially massive resources trapped below the surface, just waiting to transform the world’s energy economy.
“We’re dealing with a long-lasting flow of hydrogen,” Zgonnik asserts. “If it is long lasting, it means that we can, by installing the right system, capture this flow, harvest this hydrogen, and open the pathway for a new source of energy.”
Even a decade ago, the idea that Earth held commercially meaningful quantities of hydrogen was considered scientifically dubious at best. Those who touted hydrogen as a clean fuel—it produces only water when burned—regarded it as a secondary energy source that would have to be produced using renewable or nuclear power to avoid carbon emissions.
But proof of concept for harvesting the gas has existed since 2012, when a village in Mali began tapping a hydrogen well to power its electricity generation. Subsequent findings in North Carolina and elsewhere have stirred a new wave of excitement about what’s now called geologic, “white,” or “gold” hydrogen. The Denver-based company Koloma recently raised $245 million in venture capital to search for geologic hydrogen, while the US Department of Energy awarded $20 million in grants toward research on the topic in February.
The technology used to extract hydrogen looks similar to that used for fossil fuels like methane gas and oil, says Zgonnik, whose company Natural Hydrogen Energy LLC drilled America’s first exploratory well in Nebraska. Unlike the limited deposits of those resources, however, he believes that geologic hydrogen represents a continuous flow. “Solar energy is the flux of photons from the sun. Wind energy is the flux of the air,” he says. “In our case, we are dealing with the flux of hydrogen from the depths, which I believe will be a significant contributor to the renewable energy mix.”

The Road Less Traveled: Surprising Insights About Auto Transport You Need to Know
Tumblr media
It was a crisp morning in Denver when Lisa realized she couldn’t drive her prized vintage Mustang across the country for her big move to Miami. Between juggling packing boxes, managing her kids, and tying up loose ends at work, the thought of embarking on a cross-country drive felt overwhelming. That’s when she stumbled upon the world of auto transport—an industry she had never considered but that promised a stress-free solution. Little did she know, behind the seemingly straightforward concept of shipping a car lies a fascinating world of logistics, technology, and strategy that few people truly understand.
Why Auto Transport Is Growing Rapidly
The auto transport industry in the United States is booming, with the market size expected to reach over $17 billion by 2026, growing at an annual rate of 6.7%. (Source: Allied Market Research). Rising relocations, online vehicle purchases, and even seasonal travelers are fueling this demand.
What many don’t realize is that it’s not just individuals like Lisa who rely on these services. Auto dealerships, auction houses, and even movie production companies lean heavily on vehicle transport companies to move cars across states and continents.
What Sets the Best Car Transport Companies Apart?
While most websites focus on pricing or delivery times, savvy customers dig deeper. Here are some less-discussed aspects that differentiate a quality car shipping company:
Insurance Transparency Many people assume their car is fully covered during transport. However, coverage varies widely between companies. The best providers will detail their insurance policy upfront and allow you to purchase additional coverage if needed.
Real-Time Tracking Advanced GPS technology now allows customers to track their vehicle’s journey in real time. Surprisingly, not all car transport companies offer this feature. This level of visibility adds peace of mind during the process.
Eco-Friendly Practices With growing awareness about sustainability, some vehicle transport companies are adopting eco-friendly practices, such as using energy-efficient carriers and optimizing routes to reduce emissions.
Hidden Costs to Watch Out For
It’s not just about the upfront quote. Many customers are caught off guard by hidden fees, such as charges for fuel surcharges, door-to-door delivery in remote areas, or expedited shipping. A reputable car transport company will provide a detailed breakdown of all potential costs.
Uncommon Tips for a Smooth Auto Transport Experience
Most websites will advise you to wash your car before shipping or remove personal items. Here’s what they often leave out:
Document Pre-Existing Damage: Take photos of your vehicle from multiple angles. This step is critical in case you need to file a claim for damages.
Understand Seasonal Pricing: Did you know that car shipping costs can fluctuate based on the time of year? Snowbirds heading south in winter drive up demand, leading to higher prices.
Leverage Multi-Car Discounts: If you’re moving more than one vehicle, many car shipping companies offer significant discounts for transporting multiple cars.
Why Auto Transport Is a Game-Changer
For Lisa, opting for a vehicle transport company was more than just a convenience—it was a lifesaver. Her Mustang arrived in pristine condition, and the entire process was far simpler than she had imagined.
Whether you’re relocating, buying a car online, or sending a vehicle to a loved one, auto transport offers a stress-free, cost-effective way to get the job done.
The Bottom Line
Auto transport isn’t just about moving a car; it’s about peace of mind. By choosing the right car transport company and understanding the nuances of the process, you can ensure your vehicle arrives safely and on time—whether it’s a cherished classic or a daily driver.
Embrace the road less traveled and let the experts take the wheel.

Could North Carolina’s “Fairy Circles” Herald the Next Clean Energy Boom? (Sierra Club)

The Circular Economy Approach: How Appliance Recycling in Denver is Leading the Way
In today's world, the concept of the circular economy has gained significant traction, especially in cities like Denver where environmental sustainability is a top priority. At the forefront of this movement is Junk be Gone, a leading appliance recycling company in Denver, championing the cause of responsible waste management and circularity. By implementing innovative strategies and embracing the principles of the circular economy, Junk be Gone is setting a new standard for appliance recycling in Denver.
One of the key aspects of the circular economy is minimizing waste and maximizing the value of resources. Junk be Gone understands this principle well and has designed its appliance recycling process to extract the maximum value from discarded appliances and monitors. Through careful disassembly and separation of materials, the company ensures that components like metals, plastics, and electronics are recycled or reused to their fullest potential. This not only reduces the burden on landfills but also conserves valuable resources.
Furthermore, Junk be Gone actively promotes the concept of extended producer responsibility (EPR), whereby manufacturers are held accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products. By partnering with manufacturers and retailers, Junk be Gone facilitates the return and recycling of old appliances and monitors, ensuring that they are properly disposed of or refurbished for reuse. This collaborative approach not only benefits the environment but also promotes a more sustainable business model for the industry.
In addition to its recycling efforts, Junk be Gone also emphasizes the importance of education and awareness. The company regularly engages with the Denver community through outreach programs, workshops, and educational materials to promote the proper disposal and recycling of appliances and monitors. By raising awareness about the environmental impact of electronic waste and the benefits of recycling, Junk be Gone is empowering Denver residents to make more informed choices.
Monitor recycling in Denver is a significant aspect of Junk be Gone's operations. With the rapid advancement of technology, old monitors are often discarded, contributing to electronic waste. However, Junk be Gone ensures that these monitors are recycled responsibly, preventing harmful substances from leaching into the environment and conserving valuable materials for future use.
Appliance recycling in Denver is also a priority for Junk be Gone. Whether it's refrigerators, washing machines, or ovens, the company ensures that these appliances are recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. By diverting these items from landfills and promoting the circular economy, Junk be Gone is leading the way towards a more sustainable future for Denver.
In conclusion, Junk be Gone exemplifies the circular economy approach to appliance recycling in Denver. Through its innovative practices, commitment to extended producer responsibility, and community engagement efforts, the company is setting a high standard for waste management in the city. By recycling appliances and monitors responsibly, Junk be Gone is not only protecting the environment but also paving the way for a more sustainable and circular economy in Denver.
