Adelphi Hotel, Melbourne by Hachem Studio
In the heart of Melbourne’s CBD sits the famous Adelphi hotel. The building has had a few face lifts over its lifespan, originally built in 1938, it was bought and refurbished by architects Denton Corker Marshall in 1989, breaking the traditional style of a Melbourne hotel, and was considered one of the 90’s boldest buildings with its stark ‘industrial’ interiors with splashes of vibrant colour.…

Day 291 — A Bridge Too High
The Bolte Bridge is a large twin Cantilever bridge in Melbourne, Australia. It spans the Yarra River and Victoria Harbour in the Docklands precinct to the west of the Melbourne CBD. The bridge was designed by architects Denton Corker Marshall and was named for the former Premier of Victoria, Sir Henry Bolte. It is one the largest balanced cantilever cast in situ box girder bridges in Australia. The superstructure is built as two independent bridges of variable depth, prestressed concrete box girders, separated by a 1.15 m clear gap between the structures. Either side of the bridge rise twin 'Gateway Towers' to a height of 140 metres (459.3 ft) midway across the river. It has four spans with two main spans of 173 metres (567.6 ft) and side spans of 72 metres (236.2 ft), giving an overall bridge length of 490 metres (1,607.6 ft). The bridge supports six lanes of automobile traffic. Access is prohibited to cyclists and pedestrians.

South Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. 2019-01-18 16:41:34 by stuart murdoch Via Flickr: The Vault. A sculpture that dominates the forecourt of ACCA, Southbank. With giant exhaust stack in the background that extracts the fumes from the Citylink tunnel. Vault (popularly known as The Yellow Peril) is a public sculpture located in Melbourne, Australia. The work of sculptor Ron Robertson-Swann, Vault is an abstract, minimalist sculpture built of large thick flat polygonal sheets of prefabricated steel, assembled in a way that suggests dynamic movement. It is painted yellow. Presently located outside the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, it is a key work in Melbourne's public art collection, and of considerable historical importance to the city. Vault has weathered much controversy throughout its existence. Commissioned by the Melbourne City Council after winning a competition in May 1978,[2] for the newly built Melbourne City Square, the sculpture was not even built before it began to attract criticism from conservative media and council factions, on the grounds that its modern form was felt to be unsympathetic to the location. The cost of $70,000 was also felt to be excessive. The sculpture had no official name for over two years, and acquired a number of nicknames during this time. Robertson-Swann himself called it The Thing.[2] The steelworkers who constructed it called it Steelhenge.[2] Newspapers gave it the derogatory nickname The Yellow Peril, a name which has stuck. Robertson-Swann eventually officially named the sculpture Vault in September 1980.[2] Installed in the City Square in May 1980, Vault lasted until December of that year, when its dismantling coincided with the State Government's sacking of the City Council. The Builders Labourers Federation consequently placed bans on further City Square work projects. In 1981, the Vault was re-erected at Batman Park, a less prominent part of the city. It remained there until 2002 when it was moved to a position outside the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Southbank.[3] In 2017, the sculpture was recommended for heritage protection, through inclusion in the City of Melbourne Planning Scheme Heritage Overlay, following a heritage study of the Southbank Area.[4] Vault has been inspirational for some built and propositional architectural projects designed in Melbourne. Several of Denton Corker Marshall's works have "adopted peril's yellow almost as a point of pride and solidarity"[5] while its form has been manipulated in some works by ARM Architecture (Ashton Raggatt McDougall).
