Racing and riding is in full swing in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Many of our elite racers, team sponsors, and club members chose to ride one of our regions most ambitious early season events, the 2019 Kermesse Sports Hell of the Hunterdon. 82 miles of climbing and 19 sections of gravel, dirt and hardscrabble roads through western New Jersey. Pictured above are team sponsors (front to back) Stefan Richter (Clemons, Richter & Reiss, PC), Mike McCarthy (Pharosity Consulting), Kirk Palermo (Doylestown Bike Works), and Geoffrey Prudhomme (Geoffrey Prudhomme, ART). [Photo: Mike Maney]. Not pictured is team sponsor, Dr. Rob Riesenberger (Dentist 4 Kids) who also completed this pain-fest.
Junior racer Sam Smith of Lenape Middle School finished 19th in the Men Pro 1-2-3 race at the Blueberry Biciciletta Road Race in Hammonton, NJ supported by teammates Jason Wood of Lansdale, PA. [Photo: Ron Short]. Team sponsor Rob Beighley (Glazing Concepts) competed in the Men’s Master’s age 50-54 category but suffered an ill-timed flat tire.
Alisa Vinogradova (Newtown, PA) finished 4th in the CAT 3 Women’s Open Race at the Mayhew Mountain Bike Race in Medford, NJ. Mike Bowe finished 4th in the 45+ Men’s Endurance category. We know Tom Repkoe competed in the Endurance category as well, but don’t have a result at press time.

gToday was a day for our veteran riders. Huge congratulations to Captain Mike Bowe (20/48) and Rob Beighley (17/48) for their efforts in the 55+ race in today’s 2019 Cherry Blossom Challenge in Newark, NJ. Then Rob woke up and did it all over again on Sunday at the Ronde van Mullica (Mullica Hill, NJ) finishing 27/58 in the Master’s 50+ race.
Meanwhile, in Belgium, Fast Pat McLaughlin rode the prestigious 85 mile Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) ahead of one of the most famous UCI road races in the world. First raced in 1913, the race is one of cycling’s thirteen “monument races” and one of two raced on cobbled roads. Pat was joined by shop-friend Rick Shoff and shared these pictures of an epic cycling trip including taking in race (won by Italian Albert Bettiol of EF Education First Pro Cycling) which starts in Antwerp and ends in Oudenaarde.
A little closer to home, junior racer Alden Weinhold (Lenape Middle School) ventured up to New York City to race in the Century Road Club Association (CRCA) Category 5 training race in Central Park. At thirteen years old, Alden was the youngest racer in the race by about seven years and got quite an introduction to life in the Big Apple Congratulations to Alden for jumping into the deep end of the pool.
Four of our elite racers: Colin Kelly (Ottsville), Sam Smith (Doylestown), Jason Wood (Lansdale), and Chris Baccash (Doylestown) participated in the Pro 1-2-3 race at the Ronde van Mullica in New Jersey. The team worked hard for Colin and Sam today and reported that it was our best team effort of the season thus far. Colin won the field sprint and finished 8th overall. Congratulations to Sam for working hard in the break today and making trouble for everyone. [Photo by Ron Short: Colin Kelly at right].
Happy Birthday to Zach Shearon, our team’s most ferocious mountain biker.
Finally, we have some difficult news to share. Our teammate Jon Hoyle lost his brother, David Nathaniel Hoyle who passed while participating in the activity we all love. I have included a link to his obituary here. David was residing in Connecticut where he was the executive director of the Connecticut Cycling Advancement Program which is a developmental program devoted to giving youth access to the sport of cycling. We will be making a donation to the program in the name of our team out of love for Jon. If you would like to contribute, we’ll have a donation envelope in the shop.

We sent a bunch of racers to the 2019 Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference Philly Phlyer on Saturday, March 16th. In the Pro 1-2-3 race, Colin Kelly (Upper Black Eddy) finished sixth in strong company supported by his teammate’s Chris Baccash (Doylestown) and Sam Smith (Doylestown). Zak Andrews (Glenside) returned from injury for his first race of the season finishing 24th in the CAT 3/4 race. Senior statesman, Rob Beighley raced his new 2019 Cannondale SystemSix Hi-Mod Di2 bike to 32nd in the Master’s Race. Appropriately, Colin Kelly started St. Patrick’s Day with a 9th place finish (and first in the field sprint) at the Pinecone Circuit Race in Hammonton, NJ. Great weekend guys.

We’d like to take the opportunity to acknowledge Dr. Robert Riesenberger of Dentist 4 Kids for his sponsorship of the Doylestown Bike Works p/b Fred Beans Cycling Team. Dr. Rob isn’t just a sponsor, he’s a competitor, with multiple finishes of the Leadville Trail 100 MTB Race, the highest elevation mountain bike race in the world (10,200 ft above sea level). But most folks here in Doylestown know him as the children’s dentist to so many kids and families in our community. Thank you Dr. Rob for your support of the #NextGen of smiles and bicycle riders in Central Bucks County.

Colin Kelly and Chris Baccash got our racing season off to a great start, finishing 5th and 10th respectively in the CAT 2/3 Race at the Century Road Club Association (CRCA) Grant’s Tomb Criterium. Both showed great early season fitness, and also competed in the Pro 1/2 race as well. Founded in 1898, CRCA is America’s oldest surviving cycling association. The Grant’s Tomb Criterium is one of two races that still happen on the streets of New York City. Morningside Heights is an amazing venue for a race with great views of the General Grant National Memorial, the East River, the George Washington Bridge, Columbia University, Barnard College, and Riverside Church. Here’s a recap from the event organizers. Big thanks to the organizers and race sponsors, and to Mother Nature for giving us a mild day in the sun.
Addition: Here’s a race report from Vegan Cyclist including race footage.

(1) Hey Chris, hope the training is going well down in North Carolina. Tell us a little about your studies at Appalachian State University and what post-graduation might bring? Hey! I am studying psychology and will be working for team sponsor, ARCCA Experts in Penns Park, PA as a human factors psychologist after I graduate. I am very excited to come back home and get settled in PA once again.
(2) I know your only 22, but you've already had a pretty long career in cycling. Tell us a little about how you got involved and some of the highlights so far? I’ve had a very enjoyable cycling career so far. I’ve raced the whole NRC calendar as a pro for multiple years. I had the opportunity to train/race/live with Chris Horner which was very helpful for developing a well rounded opinion in the sport of cycling. Horner’s attitude on the sport really made me confident for my long term career.
(4) I also know that a couple of years ago you had a pretty bad break (literally) while training in NC. Tell us a little about that experience and how you overcame it? April of 2016 I got hit by a car and broke both my back and neck. I was in the hospital for a week or so and was released with strict instructions not to workout until I passed certain tests/scans. But I was on the trainer two days after I got home and luckily held onto my fitness until i was clearer to ride/race on the road. A month or so following my being medically cleared I lapped the field at the NCC Criterium in Rochester NY. I was shocked and very motivated to slay the rest of the season with some new results post-injury.
(5) Remember when you got the chance to do the hard miles with me in Germany last year? What was that experience like? Germany was awesome! Thomas Hoffman and Brian Boger were gracious enough to let me ruin their trip to Germany. We rode up a volcano a bunch of times and luckily found some liquid libations to quench our thirsts (Bembel With Care Apple Cola)
(6) Heard you parlayed our sponsorship with Fred Beans into a new whip? Watcha rockin? I bought 2018 Subaru WRX from Fred Beans Subaru in November. I love it!
(7) What's your thoughts on new team, and what do you think the goals for the team will be? I am very excited to be racing for a solid team based out of Doylestown, finally. I find there is a lot more passion in the sport when it is so close to home. I am really excited to see what the season has to teach us so we can be a more successful/cohesive squad. We’re also looking to build the roster up!

Lets get to know Jason Wood from the Doylestown Bike Works p/b Fred Beans Cycling Team in seven questions from our Director Sportif!
1. Hey Jason, you are perhaps the most "local" member of the team in that you are permanently in the Doylestown area. Tell us your thoughts on the new team and the program? The new elite team is an exciting addition to our club program. As a long time supporter of the shop it is fun to finally race in the DBW colors. You guys have been a great supporter of the local cycling scene for years, I am happy to be able to support your mission of community involvement through healthy lifestyles.
2. You’re also the elder statesman of the team at age 35. Tell us a little about your cycling career and how you keep yourself fit for racing? I think this is my 12th year racing. I have gained a lot of experience racing against the top talent in the region. These days I try to maintain my fitness with fun/hard group rides and mountain biking. I used to focus a lot on intervals and power, while that kind of focus will make you fit, I found I wasn't enjoying the sport like I used to. I think transitioning my training helped me rediscover my love for the sport. I am aware my training style is not very regimented, and not for everyone, but it has worked for me.
3. Your also the family man of the team. Tell us how you balance work, family and racing? How do I balance work, family and training? Trying to get the best of each is like trying to find the lightest, stiffest bike with the best aerodynamics, you can't have everything, there will always be compromises. My primary focus is my family, luckily my wife has been very supporting of my bicycle racing, which is important since it takes up as much time as a part time job. Work is important since that is how I support my family. The priority shift over the last few years is a big reason why I try to make all of my training fun these days, by doing that, I can maximize my fitness while still enjoying my time on the bicycle.
4. What are your thoughts on some of your teammates and your expectations for the seasons? I am very excited about the composition of the team. We have a couple of younger guys that have had experience in the domestic professional peloton and some other up and comers with great potential. I would like to think I can offer racing/tactical advice to some of the newer guys, and life advice on balancing bicycle racing with personal/professional lives. I expect to have a lot of fun hanging out, traveling and racing with the guys. I think we all mesh really well and I look forward to the season. I think we will find a lot of success by working together.
5. What are some of your goals for the season? I have satisfied a lot of my personal ambitions over the years, at this point I would like to shift my focus to some of the newer guys, I think my experience could be beneficial, both from a tactical perspective and how to prepare for a race, mentally and physically.
6. You've been riding on the team Giant TCR, what's the ride been like? The 2018 Giant TCR Advanced Pro 1 has been great, the bike is very stiff and corners really well. I would expect everyone on a team bike to praise it's engineering, but before I started riding this bike I had my own Giant Propel. I have been a fan of Giant bicycles for a long time so I was really happy when the team chose Giant to be the team bicycles.
7. Any tips for us weekend warriors trying to stay fit on the bike? My advice for weekend warriors looking for fitness is volume and group riding. Slowly building to longer rides will make you more efficient on the bicycle and group rides will teach you how to ride safely with other. My other recommendation is if cyclists expect respect on the road, they need to follow the rules of the road as well. There will always be conflict on the road, but every cyclist can use his or her interaction with a motorist as a chance positively represent the sport we all love so much.
