Happy second anniversary to The Chara Timeline by @lilybug-02! I've been wanting to do some slightly Looking Glasses style fanart of these goobers for a while, and an anniversary seems like the perfect occasion.

Working on any project for two years, let alone a comic, is a huge achievement. I think sometimes it's tough to realize just how much work goes into creating a comic on your own, especially when you have other obligations. So congratulations on two years, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the comic goes from here!

TWIN RUNES - FAQ

What exactly is this AU about? Twin Runes is essentially a comedic crossover AU between the universes of Deltarune and Undertale. No fancy nicnacs. Just the characters being their chaotic selves. But there might be some darkness lurking up ahead... ____________________

When is the next comic? The comic updates most Sundays at 6:30 PM Central European Time. ____________________

Why is this AU called Twin Runes? The name is more or less a play on the typical naming format of most AU's by featuring the "Runes" part. There are no literal Twin Runes. The whole name is more of a stand in for Undertale and Deltarune as parallel worlds. Hence the "Twin" part. ____________________

When does Twin Runes take place? This AU takes place between a hypothetical Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of Deltarune. On the Undertale side of things, it takes place post neutral route just as Frisk was about to deliver Undyne's letter to Alphys.

How many pages are there going to be? The script for this comic estimates that the comic is going to be 137 pages long (if I don't make any major changes). ____________________

Is the Player a thing in this AU? The Player(s) lost control over both human children as soon as Frisk entered the world of Deltarune. Essentially, the reader takes on the role of the Player. You have no influence on the outcome of the story anymore. All you can do is watch. Both Kris and Frisk refer to the Player as "It" and "the THING". ____________________

Is there going to be a Weird Route? Due to the lack of Player, all choices made by Kris are now their own. How to engage in battle all depends on Kris, and not the Player. Because of that, there are NO DIFFERENT ROUTES. There is only one route and that one is based on Kris' choices. Because of the lack of save points, there is no "what-if" scenario. ____________________

When Chapter 3 and 4 are released, will it affect the story? Any chapters after Chapter 3 won't affect the story in the grand scheme of things. Twin Runes created a new timeline so to speak. ____________________

How old are the characters in this story? Frisk appears to be around 9 years old. Kris thinks they're 14. (Both Frisk and Kris don't know their actual age.) Chara died when they were around 10-11. Susie is around 15-16 (she was held back once) Ralsei appears to be the same age as Kris. ____________________

What's up with Kris' and Frisk's hair? The red bits of their hair is more or less a representation of their souls. That in turn is also why Chara doesn't have that feature. They are soulless. It's a stylistic choice. ____________________

What's that thing on Kris' chest? It's a scar they got from tearing out their soul.

And why do they have weird lines all over their body? Both Kris and Frisk's anatomy resemble that of ball-jointed dolls. They appear just as markings across their bodies. Think of them as elaborate birthmarks. Kris and Frisk are still made of flesh and blood, but are in fact hypermobile. The reason as to why they do is still a little secret :) People here like to refer to these markings as "puppet limbs". You can get a better look at them and the scar in this artwork

Is old art from your blog part of Twin Runes? Unless stated otherwise, all art that was made priotr to Twin Runes is not canon to Twin Runes. That mainly includes the old asks. __________________

Why is Dark World Frisk green? Frisk changes their main sweater colors with Kris when they enter the Dark World.

Can other ghosts see Chara? (pre Darkner transformation) No, only Frisk and Kris are able to see Chara. ____________________

IS KRIS NOW FRISK'S COUNTERPART OR CHARA'S???? :) ____________________

So, was Chara in the locket all along? No, Chara possessed the locket to become a Darkner. ____________________

Where are Jevil and Spamton? Are they in Castle Town? The Fun Gang have already fought these two in the previous chapters and added them into their inventory. Outside of that little dream sequence, neither will be making an appearance. ____________________

Is anyone from Undertale Yellow gonna make an apperance? Outside of a tiny cameo from Clover (that has no greater bearing on the story) no one from Undertale Yellow is going to make an appearance. ____________________

Is (insert character here) gonna go to the Dark World/underground? With the way the story is going to play out, only the main group will be heading to this new Dark World. The rest of the story will be taking place there. ____________________

How did you come up with the idea of Twin Runes? Twin Runes is an offshoot of a separate script I wrote. It's a similar concept but turned on its head. The funny moments in that script made me just continue what now is the start of Twin Runes. I pretty much just wanted to see if I am actually capable of drawing a comic to begin with. So... in a way Twin Runes is my first attempt at a comic ever. If I ever finish Twin Runes, then I know I can tackle turning that mammoth project of a script into a comic too. In the grand scheme of things these two projects are sister series. They have A LOT in common and even share similar plot elements. When Twin Runes is over you will automatically also know certain mysteries of The Other Script. ____________________

What is The Other Script? As of this moment I call The Other Script: "Lost in the In-Between". At its core it's an inverse of Twin Runes. I.e. Kris falling into the underground and being aided by Frisk on their quest to return home. The story and jokes are a considerably more grounded than in Twin Runes and so are the characters. Though they do have their moments from time to time. The overall mood of that script is a lot darker in nature and it's a 200+ page passion project of mine. ____________________

Is there x ship in this comic? The focus of the story is not on shipping. If it's in the game it will very likely be mentioned or brought up, but that's about it. ____________________

What pronouns do you go with for the human children? I try to stick as close as possible to the games so I use THEY/THEM FOR ALL OF THEM WITHOUT ANY EXCEPTIONS.

Yes the audio sounds low quality, it could've been a bit better if I had better stuff

Transcript: maybe its cause im a comic head so sliding timescales and inconsistent timelines are something im used to rationalizing but i feel like the fandom gets too hung up on the whens of undertale and trying to make its timeline match deltarunes.

like no deltarunes timeline is more squished hence why DR! asriel is the same age as burgerpants and catty, this does not mean asriel & charas would be the same age as them in undertale and even more so the 6 fallen humans all falling over the course of only 10 years or so makes alot of story beats less interesting and flatter in execution. people use the doggos nose nuzzeling champions ship as a proof that not much time has passed but who knows the dogs are both blind as hell they could be as ancient as gerson is! Toriel & asgores stories are especially hurt by making the timeline in undertale shorter as their immortality is a big part of their complexity and grieving. chara would have been very well known by monsters before they passed but in frisks time most monsters cant even recognize that they are human! which means alot of time must have passed from when chara fell in 201x. It just makes the story that much more cohesive if between chara's death and frisk fall that hundreds of years have passed. I do like au's where chara & asriel grow up but i hate when people use deltarunes timeline as proof that undertales specifically is more squished than it is.

basically deltarune is a agedup modern no powers au of undertale or depending on what its ending is Undertale is a future magic au of deltarune.

Ever become frustrated at how many sanses you see in our fandom? Well you won't find any here! The purpose for this blog is to bring well deserved attention to undertale art + AUs that AREN'T skeletons!

(On the rare occasion that a skeleton IS featured, it will only be because they are not the main focus of the art.)

(Secondary note that if a character is drawn as a skeleton when they aren’t in canon (ex. Grillby, Frisk, Chara, etc), they will still be reblogged as long as it isn’t just Sans/Papyrus/Gaster replacing those characters/Sans cosplaying other characters.)

If you want YOUR non-skeleton art to be featured, just link it in an ask (or @ me in the comments or post itself)! I'll reblog it as soon as I can! (if sent via ask then the ask itself won’t actually be answered. Only asks that contain actual questions will be answered).

I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED!

Hmmm. Well, Deltarune is very peculiar. Especially as someone making a comic WHILE it’s still in development, it’s been…odd?

I made my comic for fun and to be more active within the Deltarune Community. If it is to be less read after the game ends, I’ll definitely be sad, but I’ll be proud either way. This whole process has been a great learning experience that I will take for the rest of my life. It's something I’ll ever forget.

I’m sure I’m not the only Deltarune fan to feel discontent with how slow the process of the game is coming along... I do wonder if I will still be as involved in the community when I finish my comic. And how close I will be with my comic when the game is complete... But what happens, happens.

I’m content with my project, no matter what conspires in the future. The amount of support and love I’ve gotten in the present has been enough to make it very worth it :) ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜

I’m interested to see what other Deltarune artists, theorizers, and game makers think about this too.

Does anyone else feel a strange sort of dread waiting for new deltarune chapters?

It sounds crazy right? I admit it's a weird feeling for sure, and I'm not even 100% sure if dread is the right way to describe it. But as more info is revealed and the next chapter inevitably gets closer and closer to releasing I can't help but feel a strange sort of, melancholy? Longing? The only way I can describe it is "when you know the goodbye is coming". The strange somber feeling when you know you’re going to have to leave stuff behind, but aren't quite ready for it yet.

In 3 months Chapter 1 will be 6 years old, and in 2 months Chapter 2 will be 3 years old. Deltarune is ostensibly in Early Access but this release schedule puts new chapters closer in time scale to whole sequals if anything, which they most assuredly are not trying to be. This has created a strange situation in the fanbase that I don't think I've ever truly seen anywhere else. One where, In the time between chapters It feels like everyone has had their own chance to decide what Deltarune is to them. To create their own version of this story, to write their own themes that they want to see explored, to imagine their own events and plot twists they want to see play out.

And that's kinda the thing isn't it? Once more deltarune comes out, a ton of these projects will just become outdated, it's an inevitability. So what will happen to them? will they become forgotten? maybe, maybe not, it's impossible to tell. but either way it feels kinda sad to think about yknow? that one day all the time and effort spent and all the memories made might one day just cease to exist.

There's a lot more I could say on this topic if given the chance but to keep this tumblr post from morphing into a 2 hour long video essay in text form let me leave off with this.

In the age of the internet and social media there will always be a fan of something. Nothing truly dies quite like it used to anymore, regardless of whatever influencers want you to believe. But that doesn't mean things stop changing, that there wasn't a past that has since been left behind. I'm a Homestuck fan. more specifically I'm a Late Homestuck fan, one who came in after the comic had already ended and it's peak in popularity was long behind it. The fandom's still around all these years later. But it'd be foolish to admit that, 8 years after the comics controversial end, the inescapable trend of new fans replacing old fans has left the fandom wholly disconnected from the monolith that it once was. the only remnants of which lie in decades old discourse and fanfiction. Like old relics of a long forgotten city, waiting to be excavated under a fine layer of dirt.

Before I close out here I just want to make it clear: I'm not saying that we should be trying to return to some nebulous "glorious past" that never really existed. I'm not trying to deride Toby Fox for not working in the sweatshop hard enough to produce more content™, or whatever you wanna try and spin-doctor this post into. It's just a thought that creeps into my head every now that I wanted to share, see if anyone feels the same, yknow?

Besides it's not all doom and gloom. For those of you OG Homestucks who read till the end. You remember Heinoustuck? Guidestuck? Nightfall? Fucking Ke$haStuck? yeah those are still going by the way! after years of inactivity they've now started back up again. some under new authors and some by the same author but still!

You could say a lot about that but to me at least, it makes me feels hopeful in a way. That, even if not everything will survive. we'll at least have some mementos to remember what came before.
