TWIN RUNES - FAQ

What exactly is this AU about? Twin Runes is essentially a comedic crossover AU between the universes of Deltarune and Undertale. No fancy nicnacs. Just the characters being their chaotic selves. But there might be some darkness lurking up ahead... ____________________

When is the next comic? The comic updates most Sundays at 6:30 PM Central European Time. ____________________

Why is this AU called Twin Runes? The name is more or less a play on the typical naming format of most AU's by featuring the "Runes" part. There are no literal Twin Runes. The whole name is more of a stand in for Undertale and Deltarune as parallel worlds. Hence the "Twin" part. ____________________

When does Twin Runes take place? This AU takes place between a hypothetical Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of Deltarune. On the Undertale side of things, it takes place post neutral route just as Frisk was about to deliver Undyne's letter to Alphys.

How many pages are there going to be? The script for this comic estimates that the comic is going to be 137 pages long (if I don't make any major changes). ____________________

What software do you use to make your art/the comic? I use Clip Studio Paint. ____________________

Is the Player a thing in this AU? The Player(s) lost control over both human children as soon as Frisk entered the world of Deltarune. Essentially, the reader takes on the role of the Player. You have no influence on the outcome of the story anymore. All you can do is watch. Both Kris and Frisk refer to the Player as "It" and "the THING". ____________________

Is there going to be a Weird Route? Due to the lack of Player, all choices made by Kris are now their own. How to engage in battle all depends on Kris, and not the Player. Because of that, there are NO DIFFERENT ROUTES. There is only one route and that one is based on Kris' choices. Because of the lack of save points, there is no "what-if" scenario. ____________________

When Chapter 3 and 4 are released, will it affect the story? Any chapters after Chapter 3 won't affect the story in the grand scheme of things. Twin Runes created a new timeline so to speak. UPDATE: We are nearing the final arc of the story. The script has been long completed and is set in stone. Even with Chapter 3 and 4's release there is no way for me to incorporate anything from Chapter 3 (read the rest of the FAQ) into the story without making a mess of things. Yes, that also includes your favorite character Pluey. UPDATE OF THE UPDATE: Since Twin Runes was created before Chapters 3 and 4, there are bound to be inconsistencies going forward!Luckily, this is an AU, and I designed it to be purposefully off in some parts because I knew I would inevitably be wrong!!!! So no. There won't be any references to Chapter 3 in the comic going forward (since the story takes place between a hypothetical Chapter 3 and 4 [so not the canon ones]) And it won't be moved downwards the timeline. ____________________

How old are the characters in this story? Frisk appears to be around 9 years old. Kris thinks they're 14. (Both Frisk and Kris don't know their actual age.) Chara died when they were around 10-11. Susie is around 15-16 (she was held back once) Ralsei appears to be the same age as Kris. ____________________

What's up with Kris' and Frisk's hair? The red bits of their hair is more or less a representation of their souls. That in turn is also why Chara doesn't have that feature. They are soulless. It's a stylistic choice. ____________________

What's that thing on Kris' chest? It's a scar they got from tearing out their soul.

And why do they have weird lines all over their body? Both Kris and Frisk's anatomy resemble that of ball-jointed dolls. They appear just as markings across their bodies. Think of them as elaborate birthmarks. Kris and Frisk are still made of flesh and blood, but are in fact hypermobile. The reason as to why they do is still a little secret :) People here like to refer to these markings as "puppet limbs". You can get a better look at them and the scar in this artwork

Are old art, comics and asks from your blog part of Twin Runes? Unless stated otherwise, all art that was made prior to the start of the comic are not canon to Twin Runes. That mainly includes the old asks. __________________

Why is Dark World Frisk green? Frisk changes their main sweater colors with Kris when they enter the Dark World.

Could other ghosts see Chara? (pre Darkner transformation) No, only Frisk and Kris were able to see Chara. ____________________

IS KRIS NOW FRISK'S COUNTERPART OR CHARA'S???? :) ____________________

Where are Jevil and Spamton? Are they in Castle Town? The Fun Gang have already fought these two in the previous chapters and added them into their inventory. Outside of that little dream sequence, neither will be making an appearance. ____________________

Is anyone from Undertale Yellow gonna make an apperance? Outside of a tiny cameo from Clover (that has no greater bearing on the story) no one from Undertale Yellow is going to make an appearance. ____________________

How would the characters from Deltarune react if they met their Undertale counterpart? The universe would implode if that happens. ____________________

How did you come up with the idea of Twin Runes? Twin Runes is an offshoot of a separate script I started in 2023. The concept of this script is similar to Twin Runes, but turned on its head. The funny moments in that script made me continue what now is the start of Twin Runes. I pretty much just wanted to see if I am actually capable of drawing a comic to begin with. So... in a way Twin Runes is my first attempt at a comic ever. If I ever finish Twin Runes, then I know I can tackle turning that mammoth project of a script into a comic too. In the grand scheme of things these two projects are sister series. They have A LOT in common and even share similar plot elements. When Twin Runes is over you will automatically also know certain mysteries of The Other Script. ____________________

What is The Other Script? As of this moment I call The Other Script: "Lost in the In-Between". At its core it's an inverse of Twin Runes. I.e. Kris falling into the underground and being aided by Frisk on their quest to return home. The story is considerably more grounded than Twin Runes and so are the characters. Though they do have their silly moments from time to time. The overall mood of that script is a lot darker in nature and it's a 200+ page passion project of mine. The script OF The Other Script is not open to the public. Only a select few people have access to it for proof reading. ____________________

Is there x ship in Twin Runes? The focus of this story is not on shipping. If it's in the game it will very likely be mentioned or brought up, but that's about it. ____________________

What pronouns do the human children use in this story? THEY/THEM FOR ALL OF THEM WITHOUT ANY EXCEPTIONS. That is what they are in this story. This is not open to interpretation. Please respect that. If this is a dealbreaker for you, then unfortunately this story is not for you.

Don't threaten me with a good explode, I'm John Explosion over here, love me a good explosive. Also, wouldn't half of them be DEAD AGAIN ALREADY? You want like, old people? I can make old people! /lh /j But, joking aside, to get serious: My main concern with doing so is that if I do make them appear over HERE, how people are going to handle it over at Twin Runes? The last thing I want to do is open the flood gates for people to ask Akane what CLOVER or RILEY (I think that's the name of the Wildfire child?) are up to. I can answer that for all of you! They're still dead. 😅 Akane has made it ABUNDANTLY clear they're not showing up in the main comic proper beyond, say, the cameo of Clover during Chara's explanation of soul colors, y'know? I think it'd be fun to do so, but also... I'd probably design all of them from scratch, too, so if you were hoping to see your favorite scrimblo from "Undertale Green" or "Undertale Kindered Spirits" (both of which look lovely, this is not a slight against them, they're just what I saw first when consulting Underevent 2024 for relevant examples), that's not gonna happen because: 1. I don't know which games are even going to get done. 2. I don't know enough about UTDR AU's in-general to write them faithfully. 3. To be honest I'm not interested in adapting these characters JUST for the sake of them being there. It's style without substance. Furthermore, I don't want this to become the "Deltarune Fallen Human AU Power Hour" comic, if I implement them, they're not gonna be main characters, or probably even side characters.

To be clear, anon, this isn't a direct response to you, I know you're just being silly and this isn't me going in on you for a good joke! This is me explaining overall the situation with that area of questioning (which I've been getting here and there since this started) in a long-form post to anyone who might ask in general. You've done nothing wrong, I did this with a post the other day and I got a lot of people going "Oh, I don't think they meant anything too seriously by that!", which was a fair criticism in the way it showed me I haven't done enough on my end to reassure everyone that this isn't about the person that's asking as much as it is me using the post as a platform to give general information. We all clear now? Okay, if you excuse me, I have to go, I hear something in my walls...

From Eldest to youngest!

Amon

Starting with Amon, the first son! The God of war and keeper of the eternal flame!

His sword, Annihilation, is a cursed weapon with an insatiable thirst for blood! Very few can lift her!

Amon is canonically Autistic and loves running in his dragon form.

Anemo

The second son, God of freedom and keeper of the north wind Anemo!

He and Amon are actually twins, but Amon's egg hatched a month earlier while Anemo's hatched a month later than it should.

Anemo struggles with emotions and can be pretty monotone. He floats 100% of the time

Autumn

The middle son! Autumn! God of love, inspiration and Harvest!

He tends to be a bit more reserved and only allows children into his temple and hopes to have children of his own someday.

He loves tending to his garden and is extremely responsible and reliable.

Amore

Amore, the youngest! God of love, music and Patron of pleasure!

His followers often hold orgies in his name and I'm not even kidding.

He isn't related to the other 3 by blood, their mother adopted Amore as he was a stillborn and his mother begged the goddess to save his life.

Some fun facts about the siblings!

Amon's body is covered in scars from head to toe, as well for the draconic runes that seal the eternal flame on his soul.

Anemo NEVER touches the ground ever since he learned how to float, touching grass is beneath him (XD)

Autumn can be extremely conservative when it comes to sex, believing you must choose one mate for life and often looking down on people who have multiple (Specially Amore)

Amore has a hunger for knowledge like no other, even going as far as dwelling with chaos magic, which is forbidden

Marionette Moon: An advanced Moon/Puppet Model that is a being that likes to create things and has a messed up past

Wonder! Eclipse/Penumbra: A version of Eclipse that technically won. They are fusion of what used to be Sun and Moon, now formally known as Helios and Lunaris.

Titan Moon: My DCA OC who was unfortunately discarded by Fazbear and now has trust issues and is incredibly envious of Sun and Moon (but his luck may change after meeting the individuals @stardusttheaters )

My iteration of Eclipse: FNAF SB DCA OC who is my take on Canon Eclipse. He’s a real sweetheart who simply loves his job and wants to help whoever he can (He’s in a relationship with his Sun and Moon)

Burning Eclipse: My version of Black Hole/Total Eclipse, who is a living code of the old Daycare Attendant. He isn’t evil just really eccentric due to being alone for a very long time

Eviscerate and The Terror Twins: Transformers OCs inspired by Killcode and Bloodmoon. Eviscerate is just a tired parent trying find his kids again and Butcher and Scythe are chaotic Energon siphoning urchins

DCA! Spring Bonnie: She assists Sun & Moon in the daycare, doing all she can to help them out. But she’s unfortunately got a little secret.

Volatile Sans: He’s a variant of Dust who’s pretty unpredictable at times and kills just for EXP. Only problem is that he can’t kill Papyrus’s…he’s tried many times and can’t do it

Callisto: Callisto is a version of Sun who lost her Moon to Vanny because their Moon was digging too much and got caught. So Callisto enacts her revenge for her partner but ends up getting trapped in a pit full of Disassemble Bots and had fought her way out.

Camomile the Medic Sun: As the name implies Camomile is a repurposed Sun model who programmed to tend to humans and sometimes animatronics. She’s very grumpy but she cares.

Rune: Rune is another Transformers OC inspired off of a TSAMS character, they happen to be inspired off Ruin.

Glad to see you here! I started planning this comic in July of 2023 due to not wanting my dream comic to be my first comic. This was supposed to be a short story, but... it's not going to be that anymore. I planned too much. I had too many ideas. I got too invested in the characters. Womp womp.

This comic was originally hand-drawn. This was because OK KO did this too and it looked funny. However, it didn't look that good when I did it, so the pages are done digitally now. Excuse the first 39 pages alphygoers.

There's no schedule. Back when I was pumping out four pages a week, I experienced The Horrors. My comics teacher said that indie studios can expect to publish one page a month. How did I do it

MAIN CHARACTERS THAT HAVE APPEARED SO FAR

Alphys

Did you know she's in this comic? I sure didn't. This came to me as a surprise. Alphys is a teacher at Toriel's school on the surface (this takes place around a year after Undertale's pacifist route). However, she got hit by a bus and ended up in the setting of Mew Mew Kissy Cutie! Uh oh! How tragic! Isn't that tragic?

Rouxls Kaard

Rouxls was hit by a bus, so he's here too. He suddenly showed up with hopes of teaming up with our nerd emoji of a protagonist. Cool.

Mew Mew Clowder

The leader of the Kissy Cuties. Overly cutesy and outgoing. Reminiscent of Raku-chan from Nyan Neko Sugar Girls.

Natsuko Mischief-Scurry

15-year-old magical squirrel of the Kissy Cuties. They fly around and weild an energy spear. They seem really bitter.

Youmu Mischief-Scurry

Purple-haired rat magical girl with a giant hammer. She's a lot quieter than the other Kissy Cuties and does things of her own accord.

Midori Ostentation

Peacock magical girl with robot limbs and brass knuckles. Outgoing and overall glamorous.

Count Electric

Evil robot guy and Rouxls' boss. He is terrorizing Alphys for reasons unknown.

Morianon knocked on Xulic's door, a muffled "come in!" answered him. He walked into the small apartment, just big enough for one person to live comfortably and host a guest or two. The front room was unoccupied, but the door to Xulic's room was cracked open and Morianon could hear his friend shuffling around in there, so he dropped his bag and sat on the couch, making Sitla lay at his feet, and waited. He sat sideways, tail propped on the armrest, one wing awkwardly angled over the back of the couch.

Xulic's apartment was decorated from top to bottom with shelves of books and rocks. Every rune light was covered in drow silk cords, woven and knotted in intricate ways with long ropes between each light to create a whole web of light across the ceiling. Lace doilies adorned every shelf as well as the round table in the middle of the front room, likely also made of drow silk that had been processed differently from the sort hanging on the lights.

On the opposite side of the room, there was an elvish-style kitchen with a low wall, where Morianon could see a steaming kettle on the stove. He briefly removed the plug in his nasal cavity and sniffed, humming delightedly at the scent of pine needle tea and boiled cave snails. He rarely had the opportunity to eat the meaty snails raised as livestock by the drow; his sister Raisha bought them once a week and didn't share; but the few times he had that chance, he had enjoyed the unique flavor. They almost tasted like the bottom-dwelling fish that lived in the muddy depths of lakes and slow rivers. Though, if he ate them as frequently as Raisha did, it was possible they'd turn his skin purple too.

"Sorry to keep you waiting." Xulic emerged from vir bedroom, adjusting and rebuttoning a loose, lacy shirt. Vir twin, Cori, followed after with a bundle of waxed cloth tucked in lir arms. Cori had darker purple skin compared to Xulic, and much shorter hair, but they were nearly identical otherwise, even wearing the same style of obsidian glasses.

"Don't mind me," Cori said, gently setting lir bundle on a shelf by the door. "I'll be heading home soon, so we won't be crowding in with each other."

"Oh, you could stay, Cori." Xulic waved a hand and walked to the kitchen to pour a few cups of tea. "Come on, you always visit for the silk harvest and then hurry right back out. Relax! You'll make all my friends think we hate each other." Vi returned to the front room with a cheeky grin and a tray of food with three cups of tea. Cori sighed and sat in the armchair opposite the couch, giving Xulic a flash of lir teeth when vi looked annoyed at losing the best seat. Vi sat lazily beside Mori, propping vir feet up in the middle of the couch.

"Thanks for hosting me, Xulic," Morianon took a cup of tea and a handful of what looked like fried grasshoppers or some similar insect. They crunched between his teeth and tasted spicy-sweet.

"You're always welcome here. Excited for work this week?" Xulic chuckled and took a bite of a small fruit tart. Morianon grunted and sipped his tea.

"Oh, sure, I love staring at small broken things and categorizing them all day."

"It's the best part of the job!" Xulic laughed in reply. Cori shook lir head in amusement.

"Aren't you two going on a really important work trip soon?" li asked, picking at a handful of nuts. Morianon nodded eagerly.

"Yes, to the centaur territory up north. Probably the most historically significant dig of our lives."

"Not that you'll be able to tell based on whatever little artifacts we bring back," Xulic added, "but Morianon's right, this dig is the biggest one I'll probably ever go on. Or at least the biggest one this century." Vi licked a little fruit juice off vir fingers. Cori hummed and leaned back in the armchair, waving lir tail. Li stared at Morianon curiously, squinting at his wings. They'd only met a few times before, rarely long enough to talk.

The conversation fell silent for a few minutes, replaced by the sound of crunching food and sips of tea. Xulic scarfed down snacks like a starving person, even returning to the kitchen to retrieve half a cave snail from vir icebox. Cori watched lir twin with an amused sparkle in lir eyes.

"I keep telling you to eat more before we start the harvest," li teased. Xulic grunted dismissively and gnawed on the soft snail meat. Cori tutted. "You should keep a better supply of snails too, your skin's going pale."

"Quit picking on me," Xulic grumbled, "I eat plenty of snails, I just enjoy a good variety of surface foods too." The twins gave each other a look, competitively staring each other down and baring their teeth until Xulic dropped vir gaze and flicked vir tail in defeat. "Whatever. Hey, Morianon, distraction time. You were at old He-esh's funeral, yeah?"

"Of course I was."

"Even around here, I've heard rumors it got a little, ah, violent?" Xulic chuckled and Cori's ears perked up. Li shifted and leaned forward with interest. Xulic grinned at Morianon. "Well, toss your log on the fire and tell us all about it, huh?"

"Well, it sure was— " Morianon began, but Cori glared at Xulic and scoffed suddenly, nose crinkled and teeth bared.

"Toss your log on the fire?" Li repeated incredulously. "Ugh, you have been away from the caverns too long; you're picking up minstrel slang."

"As if you never pick up slang from your dwarvish girlfriend." Xulic rolled vir eyes.

"That's different and you know it," Cori growled. Morianon waited in the awkward silence while the twins had a more serious stare-down, this time ending with Cori looking quite disgruntled and more tightly curled up in the armchair. Li waved a hand for Morianon to continue.

"Ah, well, it was a funeral to remember, that's for sure." Morianon laughed nervously and reached down to pet Sitla with his toes. "Ikar, He-esh's eldest son, got drunk and he just would not shut up. He said terrible things about He-esh and the rest of the family." He shook his head and raised his brows. Xulic nodded and smiled wickedly, and Cori's eyes were locked on Morianon. "I think his sister Th'elir finally snapped when he wouldn't stop insulting K'arik for being deaf."

"He what?" Xulic yelped. "By the rot, I'd snap too if I heard anyone go after K'arik that way. One of the nicest fellas I've ever met."

"I thought we were watching a fratricide," Morianon continued, "Th'elir went right for his throat." He flared his wings and thrust his head forward with a dramatic snap of his teeth, to the delighted gasps of Xulic and Cori. "But she let him live and banished him instead."

"Shoulda killed him." Xulic shook vir head. "I mean, I know it would have been pretty terrible if she did, but still."

"I only know what Xulic's told me," Cori mused, "our funerals are never so exciting. Is that common for orcs?"

"The attempted fratricide isn't," Morianon laughed, "but they do throw a good party." He went into greater detail as the twins demanded it, explaining more to Cori in particular, who had never met K'arik and was far less familiar with orcish culture.

Funeral gossip, work talk, and general conversation carried the trio for at least a couple of hours, before Cori glanced at the clock and got up.

"Sorry, I really do have somewhere else to be," li said, "and yes, I'm talking about my girlfriend," li sighed sarcastically and rolled lir eyes at Xulic. "Take care, alright? And Morianon, it was nice to talk with you."

"Same to you." Morianon nodded and smiled. Xulic got up and walked vir twin to the door, where li picked up the waxed cloth bundle Morianon guessed was full of raw silk.

"Don't be so distant," Xulic said, hugging Cori before li walked out the door, "you can visit me anytime."

"Maybe you ought to visit me for once," Cori tutted, rubbing lir cheek against Xulic's. "See you around."

"See you." Xulic waved Cori off and closed the door, then whirled around and hurried to the armchair, claiming it with glee. "Ha! Mine again. Hey, Morianon, don't let me keep you up all night, yeah? You know where the guest bed is, so you can just sleep whenever."

"Thanks." Morianon stayed where he was, still picking at the tray of snacks. He watched Xulic lean back in the armchair and rub circles over vir chest.

"Cori's got a lot of nerve, going after me for using minstrel slang," Xulic muttered, "like li didn't use minstrel terms as much as I did when we left the caverns."

"I do remember you going by minstrel terms when we first met," Morianon mused.

"Every cavern drow does it, at least for a couple of years." Xulic waved a hand dismissively. "That's just how we address drow who live outside and travel around. It used to be a more strict group, you know, but now it's just any drow who travels. I've heard of some drow that like to tack on a prefix to acknowledge that they're a baronet or spinneret by birth, but living like a minstrel by choice."

"Really?" Morianon leaned forward, tossing a couple more grasshoppers into his mouth and humming thoughtfully. "Do any drow ever go through medical treatments to change their body? If they feel like the one they're born with isn't right anymore?"

"None I've met," Xulic laughed, "but we don't really do things the way our cousins do. Or, you're probably thinking of Evarin, aren't you? I'll never understand gendered cultures. Our terms of address are very practical in comparison."

"In your opinion," Morianon teased, and Xulic rolled vir eyes.

"I am what I am," vi aid, "and what I am is a spinneret, no matter how I choose to style myself. If I had to use elvish gender terms, I don't even know what I'd use. They're too vague." Vi frowned, scrunching vir nose and looking suddenly apologetic. "Sorry, I don't mean to say anything about you or anyone else who uses those terms. It's just something I wouldn't do for myself."

"No, you've got a point," Morianon laughed, "if the doctors who helped me after the hurricane had just guessed differently or not had any help from the quetzalin, my family might have raised me as a girl. And I don't think I would have cared, if it was all I knew. I don't mind being referred to with elvish terms; I am half elf."

"Are you going to use quetzalin terms when you and Evarin go on your vacation?" Xulic tilted vir head curiously. Morianon shrugged.

"It will probably be easier." He grinned. "Of course, it will also be easier for Evarin to go by quetzalin terms, so that will be fun."

"Ha! Hope it doesn't bother her too much."

"She's fine with the idea so far, but we'll see how she feels when we get there." He yawned, squinting and shaking his head. "Oh, I haven't been watching the clock at all." He stole a glance at it and grimaced.

"I told you not to let me keep you up," Xulic joked. Morianon stretched his wings and picked up his bag, heading to the little curtained nook that held the guest bed.

"Yeah, well. Let's pick up this conversation tomorrow, it will make the tedious work more interesting." He waved goodnight to Xulic and closed the curtain behind himself, settling in to sleep.

A rumoured treasure fuels adventure when Aiko presses her comrades into investigating a piece of a map she found.

“Are you sure this is the right spot?” Logan groaned, leaning over his shovel.

Multiple holes and piles of dirt lay scattered about the Dravanian Forelands, and sweat flowed freely down his neck. Cherise sat heavily nearby, dropping her own shovel.

“Yes, I’m sure!” Aiko held up her scrap of map again, turning it back and forth in her hands.

“Are you sure you weren’t just lied to?” Cherise questioned bitterly.

Aiko rolled her eyes and turned the map again.

“Can you please have Jen look at it?” Logan asked, finally slipping to the ground himself.

“Ugh, fine.”

Jen had been hovering near Aiko the entire time, and a shine came to her eyes as she was handed the parchment. She wrapped her fingers gingerly around the edges, holding the map reverently.

“I can’t believe we’re actually holding a piece of map from the legendary treasure hunter,” she whispered under her breath.

“Yeah okay okay, but are we in the right spot?” Cherise shouted.

Taking a moment to actually consider the map’s contents, Jen looked around the area, then back at the map, then one more time at a landmark in the distance, then back at the map.

“No,” she said simply, pointing in a direction in the distance. “We should be digging over there.”

The twins let out a loud groan while Aiko shrugged. “Win some, lose some, come on let’s get going!”

With a spring in her step the Miqo’te casually headed in the direction Jen had pointed, with the Elezen following closely behind, eyes glued to the map.

“I guess we’ll just fill in all these holes…” Cherise muttered, getting back to her feet begrudgingly.

“Told you we’d find it!” Aiko exclaimed, placing a foot on the top of the revealed chest.

Logan and Cherise both cheered softly and with little emotion from their positions on the ground, staring up into the sky.

“Can you imagine if this chest contains a path to the aquapolis treasure hoard? We could find treasures from across Hydaelyn revealing all kinds of historic secrets!” Jen fanwed over the chest.

“Yeah or it could be full of money and we could be rich!” Aiko exclaimed, beginning to work on the latch.

There was a click, then a puff, and Aiko coughed, waving at the cloud of smoke expelled from the mechanism. Moments later, the sounds of rapid footsteps sounded nearby as a horde of beasts came trampling forward, straight for Aiko. 

“Or it could be trapped,” Logan sighed, quickly dragging himself to his feet and drawing his sword and shield.

After a few moments of intense combat and defending Aiko, who determined the smoke was in fact some kind of lure for local beasts, the area was clear and the chest available for opening. All four of them crowded around it as it opened. Inside was a small pile of gil, a few tomestones, and a single roll of fine silk.

“Well this stinks,” Aiko grumped, standing up from the chest.

Jen lifted the silk from the chest and unrolled it to take a closer look. “It’s certainly going to be worth something, but no, it’s no treasure hoard. Disappointing…”

As Logan and Cherise collected the rest of the items in the chest, Logan noticed a rune of some kind carved into the underside of the chest’s lid. Curious, he touched it, and as he did so it lit up, with a large magical portal appearing behind the chest moments later.

With a shared gasp, both he and Cherise fell backwards in surprise.

“What did you do!?” She yelled at her brother.

“I just touched a carving!” He shouted back.

“Adventure!” Aiko shouted, waiting for no one and leaping through the portal.

Logan ineffectually reached out towards her. “Aiko no- godsdammit.”

The three remaining adventurers quickly followed her in, Logan muttering a silent prayer to the Twelve that they weren’t about to be locked away gods knew where.

As the world reappeared, they saw a dank, dimly lit tunnel that led to a much larger cavern just ahead. Aiko was already halfway there, and heard them appear behind her.

“Come on, let’s check it out!” She called over her shoulder.

Logan was about to protest but Jen was already running ahead, tome out, inspecting the walls and anything that looked interesting, making notes.

“I cannot believe we actually found the aquapolis!” She gave a small squeal of happiness before going back to her notes.

Trading a look, Logan and Cherise both sighed and shrugged in unison before marching forward. Aiko was already inspecting another chest in the middle of the room, and Jen was slowly making her way down the tunnel. Logan spotted a pair of doors on either side of the back wall, through the bars of which he could see further tunnels.

“Wonder how far down it goes,” he questioned out loud as he walked up beside Aiko.

After telling Aiko not to open the chest until they had searched the room - to which she replied with a huff and sitting atop the chest instead - Logan and Cherise did a loop of the cavern. Between their search and Jen darting about looking for anything interesting, nothing notable came up. The only thing they could see of note was the chest, and the two doors.

Aiko looked up at Logan with large pleading eyes as they convened around the chest once more. “Yes, okay, you can open it now,” he said with a smile.

Her ears and tail both perked up immediately, and she spun around, leaned down and popped the latch on the chest. As soon as she did, three large slabs of rock on the front, left, and right sides of the room each opened up, revealing a variety of monsters.

“Trapped again,” Cherise sighed, before dropping into a combat stance.

“I get the feeling it’s going to be a trend,” Logan agreed, readying his shield.

It didn’t take long for the party to dispatch the beasts, and were greeted with a similar set of spoils as the chest outside had been. As the last of the goods were removed, the two doors began to glow.

“Which one do we pick?” Cherise asked, looking between the two.

“We could split up?” Aiko offered.

“No,” Logan disagreed.

“Absolutely not,” Cherise chimed in.

“A terrible idea,” Jen admitted.

Aiko rolled her eyes and headed off towards the left door. “This one then, my map, my choice.”

The other three had no argument against this and no other indication as to which way would be best, so silently agreed and followed after her. Approaching the door seemed to show no obvious mechanism for opening it, but Aiko was already trying an alternate method of focusing her aether towards it. Sure enough, it seemed to respond. A loud clunk echoed through the cave, and even Aiko took a cautious step backwards. The door shifted, sliding about, and lights who’s source were unseen flashed about the room. An outer layer dropped, almost seeming to block further progress even further, and the party waited with bated breath. A moment later the lights all turned bright yellow, and the door fell away entirely into the floor.

“Well that was… elaborate,” Jen commented, shading her eyes from the flashing lights.

No one disagreed, and Aiko was happy to rush forward again, leaving the other three to chase after her once more. A similar chamber awaited them, again with two doors in the same placement, with a chest sitting in the middle.

“Here we go again,” Logan muttered.

Sure enough, the same thing repeated with only slight variation on the doors opening, this time sliding open immediately. The same room layout lay below, and the same below that. This continued until they had cleared out the sixth such floor. Their sacks grew heavy with the variety of objects they had pulled out of the chests, including a fair sum of gil. The rooms had begun to take on a much more gilded appearance the deeper they had gone, with loose gil scattered about. They hadn’t bothered to pick it up since they were already becoming burdened with loot as it was.

“Look, these tunnels are glowing!” Aiko exclaimed, pointing towards the two doors that still stood on either end of the wall.

“The true treasure must be beyond!” Jen agreed, eyes sparkling.

The two of them rushed towards a door, Aiko quickly using her aether to open the door. Once more the lights flashed dramatically, the door began to slide and clunk about. It stopped suddenly, and the lights ceased their dance. Similar to the times before, the party assumed this was a temporary halting of activity before the door would slide open.

They were wrong.

The lights suddenly turned red, and the door fell to reveal a full sheet of metal that covered the bars entirely. They heard the same thing happen to the door on the other side of the room, and something that sounded like an alarum rang out, echoing painfully through the cavern. All four of them quickly shoved their hands over their ears an an attempt to reduce the sound.

“What’s happening!?” Cherise tried to shout over the noise.

“We must have done something wrong!” Jen shouted back. “Maybe we picked the wrong door?”

“They both locked though! So what do we do-” Logan began to ask.

At that exact moment he felt himself being picked up by an aetheric energy trail, similar to when teleporting, but this time it was not done voluntarily. His vision went white, and a moment later he was standing back outside, in the Dravanian Forelands. The other three were standing nearby, all with their hands over their ears, looks of confusion, and slowly realized the sound had passed as well.

“Now?” Logan finished.

“I guess it’s designed to remove trespassers who don’t choose the right door,” Jen commented, making another note in her tome.

“Well that’s ridiculous,” Aiko complained. “How are we supposed to reach the treasure then? Let’s just try it again.”

She looked around for the chest that had been in the area before they teleported, but found no evidence of it. It had disappeared.

“Maybe the chest also teleports away? Or disintegrates?” Jen surmised.

“Well I want to go back!” Aiko complained, crossing her arms.

“I guess you’ll need another piece of treasure map,” Cherise joked.

Unfortunately for her, Aiko’s eyes sparkled. “That’s right! Time to find another piece of map! There’s got to be another way in!”

With that, the Miqo’te rushed off back towards Tailfeather, not waiting to see if anyone was going to follow.

“I was kidding!” Cherise shouted after her. “Great.”

Logan shrugged. “We are adventurers, wouldn’t do to leave a puzzle unsolved.”
