SEATTLE COMPUTER TOUCHERS PLEASE READ
my computer guy disappeared and i have a PILE of laptops and phones that need physical repairs or diagnostics. if you are a computer toucher and can help me out please reach out. primary issues currently are a Dell tablet-top that needs a screen replacement (boots, working), and more worryingly a 2018 macbook pro that had a drink spilled in it which an alcohol rinse did not save (wont boot), and then some various phone battery replacements and weirder, less important problems

I'm suffering technological oppression
(do not take this at all seriously, this is absolutely a minor problem)
Okay, so in my earlier time in my PhD program, I saved up and replaced my shitty old HP laptop with a Dell G3 3590. The relevant information about it for this whining session is that it has two main drives: the OS (C:) drive, an SSD with 220 GB, and then an HDD with 930 GB.
This was a pretty good gaming/academia laptop for a couple of years, but at that point, developed some wonky problems including erratic communication with my mouse, very slow processing times, and emitting a terrifying scream from the depths of hell whenever it started up (an alarm to tell me that a fan wasn't working, it turned out). This all developed post-warranty and for various reasons I ended up deciding on replacing it rather than having it fixed, so I saved up again and got an MSI laptop I refer to as "Pherenike" or "the Beast" for reasons I won't get into.
Pherenike only has one (SSD) drive with 800 GB or whatever and is incredibly fast and powerful for everything I've wanted to do, awesome. I wrote basically my entire dissertation on Pherenike, saved every file even remotely related to my research on it, and it was absolutely fantastic for a year. But riiiight after the warranty expired, the laptop's monitor started coming off and it could no longer close, which made it useless as a laptop. Worse still, the hinge situation got progressively worse until the screen was just sort of flopping around unless I set it up in exactly the right position and nobody moved it. It's gotten bad enough that I sent my dad a video about this known MSI issue and sadly left Pherenike with him after backing up its data.
Meanwhile, my university job really needs me to have a working computer of some kind. So I resuscitated the Dell, updated everything, and tried to figure out the old problems. The mouse has been fine thus far (/fingers crossed), the single dysfunctional fan is still causing the alarm but I can get past it with ESC for now, and I realized that part of the reason it had slowed down so badly was that the OS/C: drive, the SSD, was holding basically everything that mattered and was way too full. So I moved documents, pictures, and low-requirement programs over to the HDD/D: drive, and several updates later it's more or less functioning, even if it couldn't keep up with Pherenike (...if Pherenike could stay upright, anyway).
ANYWAY I saw that the cool new BG3 patch had released, but... even after moving every possible non-essential file over to the HDD/D: drive, the Dell's OS/C: SSD only has 53 GB (out of 220) free and I can't download BG3 onto my main drive (the SSD is a basic requirement for it to run properly). Everything else still on my SSD is either trivially tiny or something that came with the system and seems rather important to keeping it running. It seems absurd that this would amount to over 150 GB of the most valuable real estate on the machine (a lot of this seems to be "Alienware Command Center" or something like that, which is spread across a zillion different folders in different parts of C:) but so it is.
So I own the game and I have two computers that meet the specifications and one is the computer I am writing this post on, but I can't actually play it on either of them :(
#/flops dramatically#OH NO i have two laptops sounds stupid but i wanted to get back to bg3 now that i'm free only for pherenike to BETRAY me... :( :(#we'll see if my dad can figure out the hinge/monitor situation#but otherwise i'm stuck with the dell. which is fine. even gw2 sorta runs okay on it. but waaaaah#anghraine babbles#anghraine whines#anghraine's gaming#pretty sure i sold my soul to larian studios#long post

what was your first computer?
Oh I love this question - thank you for asking!! I hope that I see more questions like this around our beautiful old-techie tumblr corner!! Just for reference - I'm 24 so my computers aren't too "vintage!"
The first computer I remember looks a little like this one: I remember the huge chunky monitor and the way the button pushed in on it, and the stackable IBM pc underneath. I remember the speakers' feel and how they were always just a little dusty. And y'all KNOW I was taking out that mouse ball and gently touching and playing with it!
In fact, just another aside - sitting at this computer and playing a Blue's Clues game was my very first memory. I must have been 3 or 4.
The next guy shown is what looks like the tower of my first pc - one that my dad built for me on the dining room table (which might be one of my biggest regrets - to not have had him teach and show me what he was doing at the time!). It got put into my room at the age of... 10-12? Pretty young! And boy, did I see many things on the Internet I shouldn't have lol.
Sorry I don't have too much more information about these!
The next guy shown is the Lenovo g780 and it was my first laptop! I got it in the 8th grade. It was a weird brown color and it never left my bedroom, or my lap for that matter lol. It was the machine that I started obsessively using tumblr on as well!! It was almost 18 inches, so it was hard to lug around lol. I got to help revive it a couple times - replacing the fan and the screen at one point or another.
Just for funzies! This is my current battlestation: the Dell G15. I personally think that Dell is super underrated in the computer market - they're known more for officeware of course, but they own Alienware! My laptop has the same hardware as the newest gaming rigs (Don't wanna brag, but I've got a G3800! in this baby!) and it wasn't nearly as expensive thankfully. I use it to program and play lots of games on the daily (although I've been using my PS5 a lot lately!!). I haven't seen seen a game that runs poorly on it... yet.
And also!! Under my desk currently lies a 2002 iMac G4 - known colloquially as the Sunflower computer! It's my BFF's childhood computer - she and her family lovingly gave it to me to revive! It's one of those many ongoing projects in my life that I wish I had more time for... I need to replace the hard drive and give it a super full cleanout. The neck on the monitor is also broken and could use a repair. One interesting thing about this computer is that Apple was getting real creative with their designs around this time (which... I wish desktop design was still super innovative :'( ) and the hardware is all jammed in this weird semi-globe container? So it's unlike any other computer interior and... how exciting is that to dig around in and restore?!
Thank you to anyone that's read through all of this!

As my laptop starts to get too old to run new games and has started making a worrying clicking noise I was remembering past computers and the games that pushed me to upgrade them:
family computer I had as a kid: it couldn’t run Halo 2 since it was Windows XP, it just died due to age and the usb and display ports becoming nonfunctional.
Dell First laptop: it had Windows 7 (which tragically also could not run Halo 2 for pc) and it died due to the graphics card burning out. It wasn’t able to run Witcher 2 and conveniently died around the same time the game came out.
Big Dell 17 inch laptop: I went big for better gaming but also to better split programs across a screen. This computer lasted through both Witcher 2 and Witcher 3. RIP it died to accidental fall damage when my bag was knocked off a desk.
Republic of Gamers even bigger 17 inch laptop: it’s lasted almost 6 years since a small business repair shop was able to get replacing the graphics card and motherboard covered under a “known defect”. I will salute it when it dies. However there are a bunch of games like Total War: Warhammer or No Man's Sky that it just can't run at a playable level due to old graphics card with low Vram and SSD space.
I was able to take advantage of August sales and get a new computer before mine fails at the worst moment as has happened 3 times before. Since handheld consoles have gotten so advanced I decided to build a desktop pc since it will be way cheaper to maintain and upgrade going forward. I'll mark the inaugurating game as Baldur's Gate 3, but also playing Destiny 2 it feels almost like a different game with how much nicer and more detailed the graphics are.

Before I flew out to Japan I lost the pen for my tablet PC. This absolutely sucked. So hard. It was maybe three days before my flight. I was planning on doing some (not a lot but some) digital art during my down time just to get back into the swing of things. So I did some research and found that Yes, I can buy just about any Windows Ink compatible stylus and have it work for my Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, No, it doesn't have to be the Dell Premium Active XP Pen I'd been using since I got this laptop. This is the story of my quest to replace my tablet pen.
So I had my dad drive me to Best Buy to get my hands on a Wacom Bamboo Ink stylus. Tried it out in the car, worked fine, thought that would be enough for me.
I was wrong. About me, at least. Since I'm kind of a picky bastard.
The thing that I liked and got used to with the Dell Premium Active XP Pen was the rubber tipped nib. Pen pressure? That's variable and I can work around fewer levels or whatever. The nib though? I loved the slight drag and resistance of it. It helped make my lines smooth and I developed most of my current art style around the way I could make waves and curves work in my lines.
The Wacom Bamboo Ink stylus has a plastic tipped nib. It feels too slippery for me. I could mitigate this by getting a screen protector for my laptop, but that's a whole other story and not even the biggest problem I have with this. The biggest problem is consistent functionality. I often have to press buttons just to get it to stay working in the correct mode. Considering how it only draws on my tablet in one single mode, this gets kind of inconvenient. That on top of not feeling *juuuust right*? Guess it's getting relegated to a backup.
During my research on replacement pens, however, I learned that there's a rechargeable version of the Wacom Bamboo Ink called the Ink Plus. The Wacom Bamboo Ink Plus was not available anywhere that wasn't online prior to my trip. When I was in Japan, I decided "Hey, you're here, in Wacom's home country, during a time where the currency is weaker than the currency of your own country. Let's go to an electronics store!"
Big mistake. Because Japanese electronics stores are very different from American ones. They are terrifying.
Yodobashi Camera is a Japanese electronics chain store that is several stories tall and has many floors to get lost in. The walls are stark white and the lights are blinding as the speakers sing of the best deals possible while everything beeps around you. It probably didn't help that I went to the one in Akihabara but y'know. I went in, got help from like three separate employees trying to buy it, and spent 2/3 of what I would've to get it shipped to me in the states. Showing my passport off to get it tax-free probably helped too. Either way, it was twice the price of what I paid for the non-rechargable cousin of this stylus and the few Reddit posts I found about comparable alternatives to the Dell Premium Active XP Pen said that this one with the blue pen nib was the better alternative.
There's a very frustrating quirk about this one. Similar to its non-rechargable cousin, it also struggles with consistent functionality in a way that is even more unique. Specifically in that it wiggles. It makes my straight lines wavy. On top of how it will sometimes forget that I'm trying to draw with pen pressure and automatically pretend like I'm not pushing hard at all, which compels me to push harder on my screen. Which tends to put undue stress on a glass surface and can lead to cracking. I tried all three nibs and they all have the same issue. I even figured out how to connect it to Bluetooth which supposedly helps and it still did it.
Absolute pain in the ass. I miss my old pen. Yeah, the exterior was peeling and I had to tape it up just to keep the body of it protected, but at least it only stopped working once a year when I needed to change the AAAA battery.
