#Artist: Delita Martin @blackboxpress
#Artwork: “Follow Me Little Bird,” 2021
Tumblr media
Image and caption reposted from @theamoncarter To kick off Black History Month, we are spotlighting the work of artist Delita Martin, who explores the identity of Black women throughout history. Her work incorporates symbols and materials reflective of her subjects’ physical reality, while expressing the inherent divinity of her subjects. Bringing together the physical and spiritual, Martin, depicts her subjects using a traditional portraiture technique that dissolves at points, blending the figure with the symbols and space around her so it is difficult to disentangle the individual from the elements in her environment.
Martin’s “Follow Me Little Bird,” part of the Carter’s collection, was one of two works by the artist that were included in the 2022 Venice Bienniale, as part of The Afro-Futurist Manifesto: Blackness Reimagined at the Palazzo Bembo.

Delita Martin, a printmaker from Texas, inspired me with her rich patterns and deep colored paintings.  Martin uses reference photos from models and creates what she calls “spirit women” that are artistic composites in her work.
In a recent article by Lyric Prince (https://bmoreart.com)  she explains that her figures have identities and attitudes that could be anyone’s. “They are us, they are all of us.”, she states.
Martin’s solo exhibition is at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, “Calling down the Spirits”, located in Washington, D.C.  (https://nmwa.org/)  through April 19, 2020.   To read her artist statement or watch a short video interview, click here: https://vimeo.com or obsidianlit project  Her website: blackboxpressstudio.com
Her techniques were very interesting to me, particularly with how she combined gelatin prints, acrylic, fabric and hand stitching heavyweight papers, layering them upon each other.  The pieces have the feel of a quilt and also of a print at the same time.  The dark blues are present throughout several of her pieces which I like very much, along with circular patterns and stitching that helps unify the pieces.  Her use of gold leaf reminds me a little of Gustav Klimt yet it’s not overwhelming and feels just right.
She makes connections of spiritual and social movements from the past and into today’s world with her distinctive art providing a sacred connection.  When I look at the patterns, shapes and figures, I contemplate the influences, attitudes, and thoughts of these people.  I think of the colorful layers to a person’s life, and consider what influences have helped to build the patterns of their life.  Then I ponder what kinds of patterns dominate mine…  Have you thought about patterns in your own life and art?  Please share with me your insight.

👏🏿 This week's @time Magazine coverstory "Division and Destiny: How to Build A Truly Equal American Democracy" - written by Pulitzer prize-winning #author @isabelwilkerson - features #artwork by @lavettballardarts 🖤
#BlackHistoryMonth
Tumblr media
Reposted from @time TIME's new cover: @isabelwilkerson on how to build a truly equal American democracy.
How is it that politicians are banning books in a country whose founding First Amendment protects the right to free speech?
How is it that the United States, despite its wealth and technology, leads the world with more than one million deaths from COVID-19—more than any other nation on earth?
How is it that #insurrectionists could storm the citadel of American democracy in a crusade to overturn a presidential election?
Wilkerson dives into the question we're all wondering: "How did we get here?"

"A Contemporary Black Matriarchal Lineage in Printmaking" group exhibition is on view at @claireolivergallery in Harlem through March 19. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Ca9_VjhNQj1/?utm_medium=copy_link
Reposted from @claireolivergallery Come experience the incredible works of @blackwomenofprint @revisionaryprints @blackboxpress @creativehunt @solesisterart @samevernon @latoyahobbs @stephmsantana @tanekeyaword @thehaplessprintmaker
“Like our foremothers, Black women printmakers have used the tools in our hands to create visual languages that tell the stories of our past, present, future and the in-between spaces within fractal time. A Contemporary Black Matriarchal Lineage in Printmaking explores the narratives of 9 contemporary Black women printmakers, living in the United States of America, who have shaped a place for themselves. Utilizing the elements of art, in an improvisational style, each printmaker shares matriarchal perspectives on Black interiority." — @tanekeyaword

#Artist Delita Martin @blackboxpress "Trinity," 2019. Acrylic, Charcoal, Decorative Papers, Hand stitching, Liquid gold leaf, Relief printing. 8.6 feet wide x 6 feet height.
Reposted from @theunionomaha "Throughout history, the marginalization of Black women has led to problematic representations of their roles within community and family structures, as well as problematic visual and textual representations; thus making it difficult to document their positive contributions within collective systems.
[Delita] Martin’s current work deals with reconstructing the identity of Black women by piecing together the signs, symbols, and language found in what could be called everyday life from slavery through modern times. Martin’s goal is to create images as a visual language to tell the story of women that have often been marginalized, offering a different perspective of the lives of Black women." - Delita Martin Artist Statement
Delita Martin's "Conjure" - a collection of large, mixed-media figurative prints, is now on view in our Wanda D. Ewing Gallery. Learn more at the link in our bio.
Gallery Hours:
Wed + Thurs // 1 - 8PM
Fri + Sat // 10AM - 5PM
ID: The work pictured is predominantly made of dark blues with some hues nearly black. Figures of three Black women fill the frame. One has her head turned completely away, while two look more directly forward. Behind and overlaying the figures are abstract patterns and floral prints. The face of the woman in the center is overlaid with decorative paper, hand-stitched to the frame of her face. She holds a bird against her raised knee. The woman on the right’s face is nearly obscured in shadow; only the bright white of her eyes and the outline of an earring can be clearly seen.
