I am so happy that as I type this I am now working with a total of 7 galleries. It was in the start of 2018 that I met Neil M. Jackson from the Whyberd Gallery. He and his wife Sarah Whyberd had seen my metal clay designs and wanted to meet me and see my work first hand.

Galleries: My Guide – Introduction
Tumblr media
This is number one in my a series of art blogs titled “Galleries: My Guide”. I know that this blog is subjective, but I wanted to share my 17+ years of experience and knowledge. I hope these will be a teaching tool of sorts and offer a starting point.
My method has significantly changed since the 2002. At first, I wrote a basic, poorly written artists CV and a…

Artwork Focus: The Seduction & Seclusion of Colour
“It always amazes me how simple colour and form can drive the artwork. The artist Pablo Picasso was the first artist who work I fell in love with aged 15. I have been fascinated by his use of colour and how he created three dimensional within a two dimensional medium. His use of colour was my favourite
Colour and Emotion:
The drawing below was taken from a body of work I created during my 2nd year in my Art and Media Bachelor of Arts. I was exploring the area of self portraiture and female representation within both the practical arts and academic writing. Within this body of work also explored the impact of music in drawing out emotions from my art practice. I always feel that cold colours express a clear emotional message due to the association of negative colours and negative emotions (such as crying or fear). I wanted to see how a warm colour develops the narrative of my work. I feel that the simple drawing techniques and the focus on the eyes with a long tear worked really well. It shows that my then simplistic interpretation of colour was limiting.
The artworks below compare my work and the representations of Pablo Picasso’s work:

• Galleries: My Guide As An Artist
Galleries: My Guide see my own experiences and thoughts...
My motto has been since 2007… what is the worse they can say…no!?!?!?!
There are endless pages by people or even galleries who explain how to approach them. My own method has greatly changed since the year 2002. This change came from experience.
At first, I wrote a basic, poorly written artists CV and a CD of my work. It was sent to over literally 200 galleries and I received a handful of replies…

My Guide: The Worst Kiln Ever Bought and the Perfect Replacement Kiln
Tumblr media
It was back in 2012 that I took a new step in working with metal clay and I bought a kiln. The beauty of having your own kiln is that you can fire multiple pieces at the same time and you can fire larger pieces of work. In addition, you no longer need to fire your metal clay with a blow torch on a firing brick. One of the…

Review: Suffragettes & Art
The Guardian published an article that artist Gillian Wearing will be first woman to create a statue for the public space, with her monument to Millicent Fawcett at Trafalgar Square, London.
The reason for my personal excitment is that it is that it will be a female figure, but also a Suffragette. I feel this is a truly respectful way to honour what sacrifices both the…

“Having seen Laura’s work at an exhibition in London, I commissioned Laura to create 2 pendant pieces of jewellery to include birthstones. She was very happy to help and very professional, producing 2 stunning original pieces. They were packaged well and arrived safely. I would highly recommend Laura’s bespoke metal clay jewellery to anyone looking for a special piece of original artwork”

Customer Feedback and Recomendations:
I have over 10 years working as both an artist and curator and have references, which can be viewed by clicking here.
About the ‘Landscape Gems Collection’:
My love of clay was discovered at the age of 14, exploring the endless possibilities of earthenware clay, enhanced with glazes, textures and glass.
It was in 2012 when I discovered the fresh, up and coming medium of metal clay in: Fine 999 Silver, Copper and bronze. Step by step I began to explore the possibilities of this medium and after 2 years of development it transformed into the body of work I now call the ‘Landscape Gems Collection’.
When fired, an elegant transformation takes place, turning each design from the pliable clay into solid metal designs. Each piece is sculptural and unique, which often include an unusual mix of high quality gemstones along side beautiful elements, such as glass, enamel, vintage watch parts or even bolts and screws.
This series was given new momentum when I exhibited my collection at The Royal College of Art with Flux exhibition in December 2015. Since this date, my designs have adapted into a series of ever changing mini sculptures and I have not looked back since.
Carat weights stated are ‘average total gemstone weights’ (ATGW). All gemstones are ethically sourced from around the world by Laura H Elliott.

Out With The Old, In With The New

Over time, every artist has stock and it can be frustrating that paintings can sit and take up valuable space. We all know artists always have alot of canvases, clay, tools, brushes and I count myself as one of them!
I was reviewing my work, from past and present and found stored canvases. I decided to take the following saying literally:
“Out With the Old, In with the new”
Masters, past and present, have often be known to roll their paintings for them to be stored and then later framed or re-mounted onto canvas stretchers.
I have done exactly that. Clear out the old and welcome in my new work. I have stacked up each painting (as below) and they have been rolled for storage and possible later to be exhibited, framed and/or sold.
#gallery-0-26 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-26 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-26 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-26 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Once the canvas has been un-mounted or freed from, you are left with lots of staples and the stretcher bars.
Tumblr media
#gallery-0-27 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-27 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-27 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-27 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The frame of the canvas are created mainly from wood and are nearly the same design that has been used for decades. Even Van Gough used such stretcher bars. Here are examples of what joined stretcher bars look like up-close:
Once the bars have been carefully seperated, taking care to not damage the joints, they can then be bundled together for storage.
Tumblr media
Above: Stretcher Bars Bundled From Pre-Stretched Old Canvases
This means I have beautiful wooden frames to use for new paintings. They can have any manner of canvas or material streched on them. You can buy raw canvas which are undyed and hold a special pattern within the weave. I have personally sourced the following.  You can also dye the canvas for you to achieve the colour.
I am aiming to dye the raw natural linen material using powdered flourescent colour pigment powders, similar to Brusho pigment powders.
Tumblr media
We will see what the future holds and what transpires in my journey to…..
“Out With the Old, In With the New”
So…what is next????

Interpreting Natural Form Into Clay Sculptures
It was during 2002-2003 that I studied my Acess Art and Design Diploma and this was when I began to explore the term ‘Natural Form’. I developed this concept throught the diploma and explored a great deal of mediums, including:
drawing, photography, ceramics, textiles, lino printing, etching, silk screen, painting
It was from this starting point that my collection of mixed media paintings ‘Landscape Moods’ began, from which I have never looked back.
I wanted to share some of my work in the medium of cermics and how the exploration of different types of construction or techniques on creating each piece looked when finished.
The starting point of Litchen and Bark which was the starting point for this self-directed project in 2003, which is shown below:
